Best software to use Microsoft applications on the iMac?

Hi!
I'm considering buying an iMac - what in your opinion is the best software to buy, to enable full use of typical software applications from Microsoft, i.e. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.?
Any suggestion, recommendations, etc. would be appreciated!

The Microsoft Office Suite is also available for the Mac.

Older apps which were not written for Intel Macs will no longer work in 10.8 and newer versions of OS X.

The only Programms I worked with are DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. You can burn a Video-DVD with Toast but there is no real option to design your Menu. Just a few themes as far as I discovered.
Do you have a Blue Ray Device to burn* the HD-DVD? Are the Bride and Groom able to watch the Blue Ray?
* which is only possible with DVD Studio Pro and not iMovie as far as I know.

For better quality I would go the Compressor & DVD Studio Pro workflow I just learned.
Export the Movie as is from Final Cut Pro and then use Compressor to encode the File.
Consider delivering the Movie in a different way like a private video on vimeo, a Website or on an SD card which is not really romantic...

What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC (windows 7) for use with FCPX? I've tried Camtasia and camstudio however the avi files cannot be imported by FCPX and the mov files produced by these programs are shown as just black screens in FCPX.

I use to face this issue every now and then (as a freelancer) when I use to cut on FCP7.
if the material is DV and was captured using Sony VEGAS, Premiere or Edius, the footage generally worked fine. You'll find most people will tell you to convert it regardless, however I found no issues working with them.
A problem you'll definitely face is HDV material. Most PC editing software write HDV in their own codec, which can't be read in FCP.
The only thing I can think of is to try converting HDV meaterial to QuickTime using something like MPEG Streamclip, or something similar.

What aspect of Microsoft Office? Office is a suite of programs... Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.
You've got several potential options. Libre Office and Open Office (both googleable) are 'open source,' free, downloadable programmes that will open most MS Office programmes and perform many of the functions of MS Office. Might be an idea to have a look round for reviews (etc) first, to see if they sound like they'll match your needs.
If you're keen to use the App Store, there's Apple's own suite of programmes: Pages, Numbers and Keynote. They're a word processor, spreadsheet programme, and presentation-type programme with similar functions to Word, Excel and Powerpoint respectively. They're pretty good for most functions, and are better integrated with Macs than MS programmes. They're excellent programmes for what they do, and relatively cheap (about £14 each?).
But if you're heavily reliant on MS, want ALL the bells and whistles of MS, or need to regularly transfer files between MS programmes on other computers and your laptop / desktop computer, then they might not be the best of ideas. Keynote - IME - can have some difficulties in transferring formatting to Powerpoint.
Finally, there's MS Office Mac 2011. You can't download MS Office from the App Store, but can order the CDs from most online stores (including Apple's own store). It might be worth price hunting - if you're a student, you can usually find the programmes relatively cheap (£38 at the moment on Software4Students, though you'll need to belong to an academic institution / have a UK .ac email address). Apple's own prices on MS software are unlikely to be the best prices out there (though the product will be identical).
MS Office includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint in the basic version. The slightly more expensive version (which, I think, is the £38 one on S4S) includes Outlook. Which - IME - is far more of a nuisance than Apple's native Mail programme.
(I should probably add - I'm an academic. I own both Apple's own programmes, and MS Office 2011. I tend to use the MS programmes more, if only because they're the ones that other people tend to use, and transferring between Apple and MS programmes is a minor inconvenience. Pages also lacks Garamond, my favourite work font. The Apple progs are, however, far more beautifully integrated, and would be MORE than good enough for most users...)

gyrhead mentione OnLive and I find this is the best solution. Im thinking about paying the monthly fee for it becuase its that good. Although gyrhead is correct about the virtual keyboard, I find that using a bluetooth keyboard works great. I use CloudOn also but find that its not a "full" version of Office...well at least Excel. You cant create Pivot Tables and other things.

It looks like your DXDiag report is showing only an integrated graphics card. Being an Apple computer with an i7, it should have a dedicated video card as well. You may need to contact Apple support so they can help you either disable the integrated graphics card or update any software they use that will aid the computer in switching between the two graphics chips.

The Early 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro has only got one graphic card, and this is the integrated card, Intel HD Graphics 3000.
Some games don't support this type of GPUs, and it looks like Assassin's Creed is one of them, so unfortunately, you can't run the game in this MacBook

What is the best software to use to create photo invitations?

I'd like to start designing invitations and need to know what the best Adobe program would be for this. I will need the ability to add graphics and text to the photos. The files will be sent to my customers in PDF version and they will be able to print as either a 4x6 or 5x7 photo.
Any info appreciated.

I'm surprised nobody has weighed in on this one.
In my opinion the answer is the best application is the one that will do what you want and that you are comfortable using. Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign are all capable of doing what you describe, I think. Photoshop limits you to a single card per file, while Illy and ID would allow multiple pages, and different sizes, in one file.
My personal bias is towards InDesign, but there are pleny of Illustrator power users who would disagree.

The app Spaces keeps me from using two applications at the same time.

I set up Spaces but now experience a bad side-effect. When I need to have Two files/folders/whatever in use because I want to place something from X into Y, I cannot do it because Spaces only lets One application on the desktop at the time; it shoos all the other applications away, and in doing so, it takes away the thing that I wanted to place into the new application that swooshed onto my desktop when I pressed its corresponding square in the Spaces icon in the top control panel.
How can I arrange it so that I can keep Two or three applications available for me to do transfers from one to another?

Ferrell, I have done what you suggested. I clicked onto the Spaces icon in the upper control panel and assigned spaces to six apps: Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, and iWeb.
The problem is that if I am one app and I want to put something into that app, then the minute my mouse cursor goes to get that other thing, the original application into which I want the thing put GETS WHOOSHED OFF THE DESKTOP. What I want is for the original app to remain open whilst I go to retrieve a file or folder, and stay open while I put that thing into the original app.
How does one turn off Spaces? I don't mean to delete all the names from the settings.I mean, just turn it off for a while so I can do something which requires for two apps to be open at the same time????

Using SharePlus application in the Enterprise

Using a SharePoint deployment for content and collaboration, we needed a way to intuitively interact with this environment on the iPad. Using an application called SharePlus we were able to do this. We had issues with using client certificates on the iOS 4.1 version, which was fixed in 4.2, and had excellant luck with the support channels of the SharePlus application.
Highly recommend this application and configuration if you have similiar needs.

My solution was as follows:
1. In SCCM 2012, I created an application for flash player based on the MSI deployment.
2. Created a second deployment type that executes a .CMD file with the following batch code in it (set dependency pointing to the Flash MSI completing successfully as well):

MD %WINDIR%\SysWow64\Macromed\Flash
REM Delete existing completion files

Note: Completion.flag is merely a text file that gives me an easy way to know if the script finished running or not. I check for it's existence in both locations to consider the process complete.
This has worked for me. The only hangup I had was that I set the MSI verification on the filename of the OCX that the installer puts in the System32 and SysWow64 folders not realizing that the filename is backwards from what I expected. System32 has the "Flash64..." file and SysWow64 has the "Flash32..." file. Goofy, I know.

When my daughter tries to use Microsoft Office on her MacBook while my husband is using it on his MacBook Pro, she gets the following message: Microsoft Office 2008 cannot start because it is already in use. An Office program is being used by [my husband's name]. Your installation exceeds the number of installations permitted for the license agreement. Click more information to learn more about Microsoft Office licensing." When she clicks on that, the information is nonsensical and overwhelming. Why is it doing this?

Protection. Although I havent come across this myself, the license with Microsoft is obviouly for the use of one computer only. You have clearly violated the license by installing it on more than one machine, hence the problem. This is how they make their money and they aren't alone. But the rules of engagement mean that it is intended for one machine only and not two at the same time. (Sadly).
