Best speed External Hard Drive to use with Final Cut Pro X ?

I'm looking at getting a new USB 2.0 external hard drive to use with FCPX, I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on minimum speeds and what everyone else uses.
I am looking at least 1-2TB.

I will warn you now that I am somewhat of a lone voice on these forums for recommending USB 2.0s.
I have used the 7,200rpm types with their own mains supply over the last 6 years (and exclusively for the last 3) and had no problems of any kind.
Having said that I am not a pro with tight schedules (or underwear!) but I have used DV, HDV, AVCHD with and without ProRes and AIC.
Most of my projects are short though I have done a number of 2 hour projects with comparatively simple editing and a few effects etc. One ongoing project has some 12 hours of DV which I dip into occasionally.
I have a couple of LaCie FW HDs which I stopped using a couple of years ago in favour of the much cheaper USB 2.0s and didn't notice any difference, though as I said I don't have pro time constraints.
Now is not the best time to buy HDs cheaply as the autumn floods in Asia knocked out many of the main suppliers, prices doubled overnight and have still not got back to last summers figures (2TB WD Essential £69 with free delivery).

Internal or External Hard drives for MacPro and Final Cut Pro Suite

We are purchasing a new MacPro with Final Cut Pro Studio to edit High Def video (1080x1920) in a professional sports setting. Initial storage will equal 12 TB. I've always felt original internal hard drives are more desirable: higher quality, fully compatible with Mac, and faster I think. Others feel that external storage is "safer." Should we get a MacPro with 8TB internal or go with all external? What are the advantages/disadvantages with each? Thank you very much in advance.

A hard drive is not going to change.
An external case has its own PSU and cooling.
SATA II is not going to change.
"Sharing" one channel for multiple drives is the only way it would be slow, using Port Multiplier.
There are very nice rugged storage racks for 8-12 drives and $600 range controllers. Take a look at what Fibre Channel offers. What the Apple XRAID once was.
I'd put the system on 10K 600GB WD probably, and not worry too much about internal storage. Also, you say "initial storage" so that assumes your needs are in the 20TB and you never using more than 60%. A good RAID can maintain performance to higher %.
Disk drives have made port multiplier less useful until SATA III chipsets arrive.

Reformating external hard drive for use with new MacBook Pro

I'm trying to figure out how to use an existing external hard drive (formatted for a Powermac G4) with my new MacBook Pro. I understand that the file formats are different and that I need to erase the hard drive and reformat it with a GUID partition, but how does one do that?
I've already erased the drive with disk utility (using the old Powermac) and connected it to my MacBook with the hope that it would be recognized. No dice, alas. It doesn't mount at all.
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My external harddrives all work just fine with the MacBook Pro. You shouldn't have to reformat anything. I think if you did then it would not be backwards compatable with the older systems. Stick it back in your old computer and try to mount it again, repair permissions shutdown your macbook pro and connect the external drive then reboot

What's the best external drive to use with Final Cut Pro?

I'm looking for a drive to mainly back up my final cut pro work, possibly do a little editing on, what's best? I have a G5 desktop.

On the hope that during your college career you learned how to do original research, you could show some clear initiative and read through those threads my link will reveal. From the drives discussed you might find common elements (praise or conndemnation) that show up after reading dozens of threads. Of the ones that get consistently good reviews by serious users, you can then go the website of the manufacturer and figure out if they fit your budget.
All this can be done in the time of you waiting around for a few people to chip into this thread.

Can someone suggest an affordable external hard drive for use with FCPX and video editing on my Macbook Pro Retina

I have a Macbook Pro Retina from 2012 and I only got the 250GB hard drive. I'm getting ready to purchase a Panosonic HC-X920 to use with Final Cut Pro X already installed on my laptop. Since I know the file sizes are going to be so big, can anyone suggest an affordable external drive fast enough to keep up with editing the video? I'm not a pro and use it for family and personal projects.
I prefer some thunderbolt options since I haven't had a chance to use the inputs since I got my macbook pro. I just don't know what is necessarily too little or too big and too cheap and too expensive for my needs. Thank you.

It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen. Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

Which format for external hard drive to use with time machine backup and connect to windows laptop?

Hi! I have an external hard drive on which I have transferred my iTunes library (just mine - not others). I have also a folder containing just films (some but not all of which are in iTunes too) Everything has been working just fine until yesterday I noticed that Time Machine was not including the external hard drive in back up as it wasn't formatted. So I have moved everything back to the Mac hard drive and and ready to format the external hard drive - but understand that if I do the contents cannot be opened from a windows laptop ... is that right? Is there are format I could choose that would allow Time Machine to back up and allow Windows to open as well (the idea being that I take the external hard drive with me on holidays etc!!) ok - I understand. I have managed so far to format the drive (on windows) to exFAT file system - which apparently works with both Windows and Mac - but you're correct - it will not be included in time machine backup as I have checked the back up files and Samsung is not showing. Reckon I'm onto having to buy yet another portable hard drive just for windows - or of course buy myself a new mac book!! Can I ask you please - does the drive have to be clear of everything before I change the format - or can I change it with the files still in there? Also, got any quick ways duplicating the files onto another External Hard drive (for use on the windows laptop) At the moment the files are taking 2/3 hours + to copy over! Thank you!

Any hard drive should work. I don't know of any issues caused by a specific brand of hard drive for working with Lion.
Now as far as the hard drive itself goes there are a few options. Most external drives run at 7200 rpm. Some however still run at 5400 rpm (rpm is the speed of the disk in layman's terms). Faster is better in most cases, however they do produce slightly more sound and run hotter, but not by much.
Then there is also the choice between USB and FireWire (thunderbolt is still to pricy). FireWire runs faster, but is more expensive.
Those are your choices.

Quiet external hard drive for use with Time Machine?

Few questions related to Time Machine:
1- what external hard drive that would be good to use with Time Machine, that also runs relatively quietly? Since TM runs 24/7, am looking for one that is quieter than my current G-tech.
2- Please confirm what size is optimal relative to the size of the internal hard drive.
3- I currently use a separate external hard drive as my bootable disc. Is it possible/preferable to have these be on one and the same drive?

2. You should allow 2 - 3 times your internal drive's size for TM.
3. No, it'd be best to be on another drive - you can create separate partitions, but if/when the drive fails, both of your backups would be gone. So, keep your clone on a separate disk. In fact, it's good to have two different backups.

External hard drive to use with Time Machine? Thoughts? Mac newbie.

Hello. Switched to an imac and have loved the experience. Was just about to buy an external hard drive when apple announced the time capsule. I've been holding off thinking I would purchase one but now I'm re-thinking it.
Between music, videos and pictures, I currently have about 400gb of stuff (and it will grow). My main concern is backing up (archiving) a copy of these files. Backing up other system files is a second concern after that.
I'm thinking of buying a 1TB external hard drive, firewire capable, partitioning part of it to be an archive drive, and the other part to use with time machine. Skip the time capsule.
Will that work? Other recommendations?
If so, any recommendations on a quiet, reasonably sized (i.e. doesn't take up the entire corner of the desk), 1tb external hard drive?

Clayton, if you're only backing up one Mac, then you can purchase any good, reputable 750 GB or 1 TB external drive.
Considerations:
1) Reliability is key here. You want a drive that works. Various people have complained about Western Digital (me included), so take that into consideration.
2) Quiet is important. You have a quiet computer -- why louse up the working environment with a noisy drive?
3) FW (Firewire) 800 is faster than FW400, which is faster than USB. But once you get the initial backup done, it really doesn't matter how fast the drive is, because it works in the background and doesn't hamper your work. And if you DO need to restore your entire computer via Time Machine (I've done it), speed is less important than reliability. Even if it takes 3 hours, you'll be grateful. So while some may counsel you to get a 'fast' drive, reliability is more important.
4) On FW versus USB, you'll hear many claims. Again the key is reliability versus speed. A good USB drive is fine for what you are doing; FW is faster. Some folks have had problems with one or the other, so hear what they have to say.
5) Every drive dies. That's true for any electromechanical device. Don't think you've solved your backup problems by plugging in a drive and walking away. Your most critical files need a second backup, be it to a DVD, CD, thumb drive, network drive -- something. The more critical it is, the more backups you need. If you're writing your Ph.D. thesis, by definition you can't have too many backups
6) Convenience matters. You can 'roll your own' drive if you have experience -- buy a case, buy a drive, assemble, etc. But it's many times easier, particularly for a Time Machine backup drive, to just buy a reliable (there's that word again) external HD off the shelf.
7) Finally, follow directions. Apple tells you how to set up a TM drive. Do it their way. That means, format the brand new drive and make it a 'GUID' partition. Use the Apple Disk Utility. Follow directions.

Hello! I need some help regarding a new external hard drive I got from OWC. It is a 500 gb firewire 400 + usb 2.0 7200 rpm hard drive. I am running it from firewire. The software suggests the first thing you do is make a clone of your macbooks internal hard drive, that way if it fails later you can use the external to back everything up. If I do this ...
1. do I have to make the drive "Bootable" ? I have software called Data Backup 3 by Pro soft I think. It came with my external.
2. Can I still back up other stuff like my audio recordings and record onto that drive to a seperate folder?
3. If I make a bootable copy will it try and boot from the drive everytime I turn it on or something?
My other question is... how can I use this drive with a pc? I have a pc as well and I heard that the only way it will work is to format it in ms-dos mode (fat32?)
If I write it to fat32 will it slow down my drive or make it worse? I heard that you should format external drives specifically for mac if you have a mac; so it will only work with macs...
(sorry this is going on and on; it's like a chain reaction of questions)
so If its formatted to mac drive format then can I do this with my current situation:
1. I have wireless internet, the router is on a pc downstairs
2. Can I send files over a network somehow from the pc to my mac

1. No, you don't have to make a bootable clone.
2. If you use the drive for a bootable backup, then you cannot use the drive for other types of storage unless you partition the drive and make more than one volume.
3. No, it will not try to boot the computer. You must designate the startup volume using Startup Disk preferences.
If you wish to use the drive on both a Mac and a PC, then either you make two partitions - one for Mac and the other for the PC or you must format the entire drive using FAT32 so the drive can be used for read//write by both operating systems. If you do this then you cannot use the drive for a bootable backup nor can you use it with Time Machine.
FAT32 is slower for read/write on the Mac than using Mac formatting.
Optimally, I would suggest you partition the drive into two volumes. One volume formatted for the Mac and the other formatted FAT32.
You can send files from a PC to a Mac and vice-versa using File Sharing. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing" or "sharing" to find help articles. Also see,

Cannot erase my external hard drive to use with Mac

So, having recently moved across to Apple, I am now trying to move my data, documents, movie and music files.
I have two external hard drives that I used to use with my PC and now I would like to be able to move things around, and edit the names of folders etc.
I googled for help and discovered that using utilities, I could erase the disks and set them up to be used by both Mac and PC (Still have a desk top at home)...however, when I tried to follow the instructions that I had found. There was an error message stating that the drive could not be unmounted.
I am currently traveling and would like to be able to use the drive to store the data that I am collecting on the drive (so silly that I didnt check this out before I left home)...does this mean I am completely stuck?

What's a good External Hard Drive to use with Time Capsule

I have a MacBook and a 1GB Time Capsule, and until recently used my TC to store and access the music and video files I've purchased from the iTunes store as well as my Time Machine backups. The HD in the TC crashed a few months ago, and necessitated a long, drawn out and somewhat expensive restore to get everything off the crashed drive before restoring it. So now, I simply want to use the TC as a backup using Time Machine, but I also want a good external hard drive that is either wireless and can either be connected through the TC's WiFi base station capabilities or can plug in to the TC's USB port.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Most USB drives should work fine. But there isn't much power on the USB port, so bus-powered drives must be connected via a powered hub.
And several folks have reported that larger drives, over about 750 GB, even if they have their own power, need a powered hub, too.
And be aware that Time Machine, like most backup apps, cannot back up from any network drive. The Chronosync app may be a usable alternative.
