Best ssd, and best size

i have a 2012 mbp 2.2 ghz i7 with 8 gigs ram. being disapointed with the stock 5400 hd (500 gig capacity), im looking for a ssd replacement. what is the least amount of hd space i could get by with, and what is the most dependable ssd i could get?

everyone is going to give you different opinions/suggestions here.
there are a few of us in this forum using Crucial M4 256GB and 512GB. I use both.
the fastest out there is the Samsung 830 series which is also the one Apple installs in their Macbooks.

What size for OS/apps SSD and scratch disk SSD ?

Hi !
I need a SSD for my OS with the full CS6 Cloud and few others apps (but no games, pictures, songs or other personnal stuff),
that's mean between 70 and 80Gb. So I think I'll need only a 128Gb for that.
I also need a scratch disk, so despite I prefer a fast and large disk like the Barracuda 3Tb, I read it will be better to take a SSD.
My workstation is a 6x core, with 64Gb RAM, and 6x HDD for projects, render and footage (4K R3D and 1080p PRORES).
My questions are :
1) OS/apps SSD :
Even if I only need 80Gb (or a few more like 90Gb max) of storage, do I need to take more than 128Gb ?
Is it possible that the OS fill my disk with lots of temporary files ?
And the same for Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects or others apps ?
I know those apps will use the scratch disk, but maybe others temporary files will be write on this OS/apps drive ?
2) scratch disk SSD :
Like I said, I prefer larger drives, but as I understood, SSD will be better for preview and temp files,
and actually I'm working with 4K R3D footages and 1080p PRORES.
So do you think 128Gb will be enough for a scratch disk, to use with CS6, Blackmagic Resolve, and others 3D apps, like Maya ?
Of course I can empty them regularly.............. but is it enough ? Or 256Gb, or higher will be better ?
Or just a fast WD Velociraptor 1Tb or even a cheaper Barracuda 3Tb hard drive will be good enough ?

Maybe you mean that those apps will fill the SSD with "hidden" files, but not reach the limit of 128Gb ?
About Windows, I didn't knew I could make a scratch disk only for this temp files.
Do I have to put the Windows temp files in the scratch disk also ?
And you don't think a Velociraptor with 1Tb will be a good solution between the speed of a SSD and the size of a HDD ?
My drives (alone or in RAID 0) are directly connected from the motherboard P9X79 PRO, trought the X79 chipset, and the Marvell chipset.
But I read that the Marvell chipset has only 500Mb/s in total bandwitch divided between the 2 drives..... I'm not really sure....
but even if it's true, I don't think the OS/apps will take a lot of bandwitch (except when I'll start an apps),
and it will surelly let the full bandwitch for the scratch disk. Don't you think ?

Best size for SSD boot drive?

I am looking to replace my optical drive from my iMac 27" with an SSD to be used as a boot drive and to hold my applications for faster loading etc..
I was wandering what would be the best size for a boot drive so that I dont overspend as SSD's are expenive.

The best size is the size you need to store OS X and your apps without getting the SSD full. For example, if OS X and your apps take less than 100 GB, you should consider a 128 GB SSD, and if they take 150 GB, go for a 256 GB SSD.

What is the best Practice to improve MDIS performance in setting up file aggregation and chunk size

in our project we have planned to do some parameter change to improve the MDIS performance and want to know the best practice in setting up file aggregation and chunk size when we importing large numbers of small files(one file contains one record and each file size would be 2 to 3KB) through automatic import process,
below is the current setting in production:-
Chunk Size=2000
No. Of Chunks Processed In Parallel=40
file aggregation-5
Records Per Minute processed-37
and we made the below setting in Development system:-
Chunk Size=70000
No. Of Chunks Processed In Parallel=40
file aggregation-25
Records Per Minute processed-111
after making the above changes import process improved but we want to get expert opinion making these changes in production because there is huge number different between what is there in prod and what change we made in Dev.

No of Chunks processed in parallel = 5
File aggregation: Depends largely on the data , if you have one or 2 records being sent at a time then it is better to cluster them together and send it at one shot , instead of sending the one record at a time.

Best Size and Resolution to Scan Photos?

Hi, I need to create a photo slide show in iMovie. I would do it iPhoto but I need to able to time my music and add intermittent titles so I guess I'll need to use iMovie. I'm very new to iMovie and actually am used to editing on Avid and Media 100 (which I no longer have access to) so I'm a little scared! So, my question is - when I scan my photos what is the best size and resolution to scan them at for the best final results? It will be viewed on a TV from a DVD. Any other tips for a newbie also appreciated. Thanks so much! -Julie
p.s. I'm using iMovie HD but I'm on a G4 so don't have HD capabilites. Not sure if that matters.

What is the best size for standard previews when working with a 27 inch iMac? screen size 2560 by 1440
Also would you go high quality preview or just low.

For archived files 1:1 is completely unnecessary and you should have noticed, I have the space.
Have you noticed that if you zoom in on an archived image with a standard preview a 1:1 is automatically generated, too easy!
If you are wanting to recover from previews then you need to look at your back up strategies. Or just export full sized jpegs!!

Granted, if you don't have enough space, or you'd rather use the space for other things, then yes: standard preview size matters. What is best "size" for Share- Media Browser then iDVD?

What is the best "size" to "Share to Media Browser"? What is the closest equivalent to the format that iDVD burns movies at?
I don't want to waste time using Large if it converts it to something like Medium uses. There is nothing on the list about DVDs. Just iPods, .Mac, YouTube, Apple TV, computer ...
Note: The current video camera I have is a standard definitive Sony TR730 digital video camera. Most of the time our relatives borrow our video camera to take stuff. None of them have an HD video camera.

I also know that iMovie '06 is a dead product.
Of the dozen or so people that I know making movies with iLife 08, all use iMovie 06 for most of their movie making.
Please bear in mind I am NOT an "iMovie 08 hater" (I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06). iMovie 08 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
I use iMovie 06 (with iDVD 08) if I think I will ever put a movie on a DVD.
Remember that Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!).
Also when you install iLife 08, iMovie 06 is not removed from the computer. Previous editions of iMovie were always un-installed when upgrading in the past. Apple leaves iMovie 06 on your system, because they want you to have it.
Want a DVD, use iMovie 06.
Want YouTube, use iMovie 08.
Just my 3 cents (inflation).

Best Size For Back Up Disk?

What is peoples experience with the best or minimum external HD size to use with hourly back ups via Time Machine? I would imagine that at least double the GB of the drive that is being backed up would be necessary, but should it be even greater? Or less? and why?
I need to know before I buy an external HD. I don't want to regret getting something too small in the long run.

It is generally recommended that you use a volume at least twice the size needed for the space being consumed on your startup volume (in other words, based on your disk usage, not the size of the disk). IMO, anywhere between 2x and 3x the size needed will do just fine.
Here's one nice thing about Leopard, though: we can now dynamically partition and re-size "live" drives and volumes (provided we use the GUID partition scheme)! The implications for Time Machine usage are great, here. I recommend you get the largest (and fastest) external drive you can find, then partition it for use with Time Machine. This makes a lot of sense anyway, because one's cost per GB goes down as drive size goes up (up to a certain point).
You can partition the large drive using the GUID Partition Scheme, creating one volume of an appropriate size for your current Time Machine needs, and a second (or third, fourth, etc.) for your own use. If you find at any later time that it would be beneficial to expand the Time Machine volume, subsequent partitions can be deleted, then the Time Machine volume expanded into the resultant free space. Only the data on the "deleted" volumes will be erased.
The only requirement for this usage is that the Time Machine volume be the first one on the drive (at the top of the volume diagram in Disk Utility's "Partition" pane).

'Photo's resizing? Best size for best quality?

Hi, I want to put a London underground tube (metro) map on the 'Photos' section on my iPhone. I know that iTunes resizes all images before they go onto the phone, but that is the best size and quality to ensure the image comes out the clearest on the phone? Thanks.

Really hard to say. Quality is subjective. But the "optimizing" a sync does does make it hard to get large images onto the phone and still look good to zoom in if you have that much detail.
Will say, what a person did for the NY and DC subway/metros maps, they took the image and sliced it into multiple pictures, each being the size of the screen (so resize the original first to be proportional). Then they named them in order from top left to bottom right. Then made a folder named SubWayMap and put those images in it and put that folder in the folder they sync
In the end, they can access their photos, all the thumbnails side by side reveal the full map, then you click which part of the map to see (thus go into one image) and that image could zoom and still be clear to read what they needed.

Best size jpeg image to import to HD project?

I think I'm having more "trouble" understanding this than I should! I need to buy about 50 jpg images from iStockphoto.com to include in a Final Cut Pro project. We shoot with an HVX200 in HD 720 - and the timeline is set up as such. When I buy the images, the larger they are the more they cost - naturally! I don't want to waste money buying jpg's that are larger and 'better' quality - if I can't see the difference on an HD monitor, or say typical consumer 48 inch HD television. So what's the "best" size I should be buying? Medium size is about 1698x1131 px. Since my image size of HD is 1260x720 - isn't this medium size sufficient? Or would I see better quality in the final output if I bought the large size which is 3072x2048 px? It costs a few dollars more - but if I don't see the difference, why spend the money? Am I thinking correctly thinking with anything bigger than 1260x720 - I won't see the difference, so why get it any bigger?
Somehow, I think I'm wrong thinking that! I've tried researching this - but am getting totally confused. Is there an easy answer here? I KNOW I can't be the only one out there wondering this

Best size for plasma & LCD screens

Just wondering, what is the best size to start with images then into DVD spro - for the best compatability for use on plasma & lcd screens - with a standard DVD player feed??
PowerMac G5/2.3GHz Mac OS X (10.4.10)

The pixel dimensions of the standard DVD palyer are effectivley 720x480 for NTSC and 720x576 for PAL. You'd be best off scaling your images to that size (starting at a size of 720x534 or 768x576, see page 85 of the user guide) in your favorite graphics program.
All LCD monitors you're thinking of using have a much higher resolution, and will upscale the image. Many 4:3 plasma screens are that resolution (especially older plasma, or ones below 42 inches). New plasmas will upscale it too.
The most you can really do is give the video as much data rate as you can, but keep your total data rate to 8 mbps or lower, so that less capable DVD players can keep up.

Best Size for Web bound Video Clips

I have been making all my videos at 320x240 pixels, is that still the best size to go for or should I be brave and go a bit bigger, if so how much bigger? Any advice from you experts appreciated.

Bigger is always better.
But you don't have to change what you've already published as there are simple html codes that can "change" the default dimensions of your QuickTime files. There are plenty of other html "tricks" that can change the display properties of those files.
Trick number one; the "Scale" command:
Most applications use the default size of the QuickTime file as part of the html code but you can do more.
Scale="tofit". The "tofit" command overrides the actual dimensions and uses the values you enter in the html code.
This allows you to use a 320X240 file and display it at "double" size by simply adding the command and changing the values in your page code. In most modern video codecs (especially H.264) your file will look just fine at double size but you save the bandwidth by using a smaller file size.
QuickTime Media Link (.qtl) file. These are simple text based files that automatically download when clicked and launch the file via the QuickTime Player app. These files can have "special" properties (like Full Screen playback) and even open the QuickTime Player app (even if not already opened).
Since they are text based files you only need a text editor to create them and they can be inserted in any Web page as a "link". Nothing loads (no bandwidth used) until the URL is clicked. One of my files as an example:

You can also use the special "href" tag code to "call" the QuickTime Player app (bypassing the browser plug-in). Another example:

Best size for facebook marketing picture?

Hello,
has anyone experience with designing a facebook post / timeline picture for marketing purpose? If yes, what is the best size for desktop and mobile and how would you do the fill.
In my opinion it should be a size that fills a large part of the users screen so they must see. For the content I think a teaser and then a click to the webpage for more info.
I'm curious what other designers do or would do.

Hi Jorik,
Facebook will actually resize any photo you post to fit the timeline. With that said, even if you upload an extremely large screensaver image 1600x1200px, it will appropriately fit and scale it according to the window size. This will also scale appropriately on mobile devices. Generally speaking, that means the larger your image the better. This is because when displayed on a desktop or large screen, you can still view it at a high resolution, but when scaled down to a mobile device, it won't make a difference. Note the maximum photo upload size is 2048x2048px.
One other thing to note, is that Timeline previews the image as more square and vertical. This means that if you have a landscape photo or very wide photo, the two sides will probably not be visible in the preview. So for marketing purposes, aim important content in the center of the composition. If you want your marketing content to PERFECTLY fit the Timeline post displayed on Facebook, you would want to design an image 404x404px.

When you need to pan and "zoom" then you need to increase the resolution so that when you "zoom in" (using scale) you never scale beyond 100%. For example if you want to zoom in to show an area that is a quarter of the size of the entire image you need to double the resolution. In Steven's example you would need to create your still with a resolution of 1440x1068.

Best size for VM SQL Server for a start or maybe Azure SQL Database?

My question is quite general but some of You may have already considered similar issues. Let's say or assume I have the website and mobile application - social kind - used by:
1. 10 K users
2. 100 K users
3. 1 K K users
4. 20 K K users MAX
I am strongly considering use of VM SQL Server mostly because of its PARTITIONING functionality, some advantages in the context of INDEXING compared to Azure SQL Database and JOBs availibility.
Question: what would be the best size and count of VMs related to SQL Server for the start and later?
Question 2 - I am able to move JOBs functionality to my Worker role if I wanted to consider use of Azure SQL Database. SQL Server still has at least those 2 advantages (Partitioning, better Indexing) - is it worth considering Azure SQL Database service for
100 K users and more?

Considering the number of users i wouldnt recommend an Azure SQL database, because of certain limitations like Max worker threads, Max sessions, etc. Also the maximum size of the database can be 500GB.

Lenovo Yoga 11s SSD and RAM Upgrade - Great Results

Picked up a Lenovo Yoga 11s from Best Buy. I chose Best Buy for price, color, and processor. They had a slightly better deal than Lenovo.com. The clementine color looks great. Quality is great. I'm very happy with the purchase. It has the i5 processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD.
I upgraded the SSD and RAM and found the upgrade relatively easy. Here is a basic step by step and results. (note the parts I chose increased the cost by close to $400. I chose these parts based on quality, performance, and power usage. There are cheaper alternatives, but I wanted an upgrade and money was not my concern.)
Upgraded Parts
RAM - Patriot Memory 8GB PC3-12800 1600MHZ CL11 1.35V - Purchased at Newegg, but could have saved a couple dollars on Amazon.
I chose this part based on previous experience with Patriot and the low voltage RAM. A lot of the RAM is higher voltage and I wanted to make sure I reduced heat and power usage. When you look for 1.35V RAM, there are not a lot of options...

I read all the reviews, posts and issues around cloning the Win8 SSD drives. Many people have/had issues. I was prepared for problems. Another reason I chose Intel, as they have migration software that I felt would be top notch.
You need to have the Hardware Manual handy. I read how to remove keyboard and top cover. This is required to upgrade RAM and SSD. It was very easy. Take your time. Note, this is very different than the Yoga 13 youtube video for part removal. I think it's easier. Here is the link to download manual Yoga 11s Hardware Manual.
How to clone your SSD
I expect if you're doing this project you can learn how to use the Intel software for cloning. Read the web, watch their youtube video. Read the manual...
Remove your factory SSD and insert new Intel SSD (note, you must insert Intel drive in notebook for cloning. Do not try and clone on the USB external drive. Intel software will not detect drive properly). Create a bootable version of the Intel software on a USB drive. Install your factory OEM SSD in the external MSata SSD drive. Go to BIOS and set boot to support legacy, no fast boot, boot to USB.
Boot to the Intel Acronis app on the USB drive. Then connect your OEM SSD via second USB port.
Then follow the wizard on Intel's software. Cloning process took less than 5 minutes.
Unplug your USB devices, go to BIOS and set all all your boot settings back to factory UEFI, fast boot etc.
The PC booted to windows second try. The first time it said it has issues and went through a process to repair. It then said it failed. I rebooted again and it went straight to windows. Did all my windows updates and everything is fine.

This pc is crazy fast booting and shutting down. It boots in 7 seconds. Not sure it's really faster than OEM, but I've never seen a pc boot this fast.
Over all performance is fast. I installed Office 2010 pro from a USB drive in under 5 minutes. Web browsing is crazy fast. I'm super impressed with the speed of this pc. Much faster than I expected.
Size, Shape, Weight, color is great. Performance is great. Happy with upgrades and quality of parts. May be my best notebook purchase to date. I don't have any battery life numbers to report yet. Everything is new and I haven't really spent much time off the charger.
Issues I've experienced during this upgrade of parts
I first tried to clone the SSD drive by putting the Intel drive in the USB enclosure first. The intel software would not work as the PC detects the external SSD drive as a SCSI drive and Intel cloning software could not identify the drive as an Intel Sata drive. I called Intel and they had no advice or help. I also tried a few other cloning softwares that ultimately did not work. As a last resort I switched the drives and everything worked great. Lesson learned, swap the drives first and use Intel software to clone.
Factory restore - doesn't work. Not sure why the factory restore is not working on my new Intel drive. Windows works great! All the partitions are there. I suspect I messed up the OEM restore portion of the drive. At one point I thought I had booted to the Intel drive, and tried the restore (I had about 7 failed cloning tries before the final one worked as I outlined above). It went through the restore process and then failed. However, what I later found was that I had actually booted to the OEM drive in the external USB case and I may have corrupted the restore functionality.
I contacted Lenovo Support and explained I could not restore using the 1 key restore. They walked me through some basic troubleshooting and then opted to mail me factory restore disk. I have the disk and will keep them available for when/if I ever need to restore.

I upgraded from the Yoga 13 to the 11S and am happy to report that the machines are so identical that apparently you can just yank the SSD from one and drop it in the other. I had upgraded my 13" to 240gB SSD + 8gB RAM and simply plopped the two components into the 11S and after about 30 seconds of Windows alerting me that it was 'setting up devices' the machine booted normally and has been working perfectly since!
