Best Still Photo Size for FCP

This question has probably appeared before but here's my question: I have gathered several hundred digital photos which I want to import into FCP. These photos range from 104kb/72 pixels per inch to more than 13MB/400 pixels per inch.
On previous projects I seem to remember having problems when large clip sizes were used. I don't mind resizing the photos in Photoshop Elements if someone could tell me what size would give me the least problems and best results. I've heard that 720 X 480 or so with 72 pixels is OK. CAn someone confirm this or is teh 72 pixels going to fade out in FCP?

read what Jim and Studio have said;
You only find dpi settings in Photoshop because you can print to paper with it, you dont find dpi settings in FCP, Motion or Boris.
once you bring a stil photo or graphics into FCP, dpi is completly ignored by FCP because it doesnt know what to do with it. You can change the dpi setting to 5, 50 or 5000 in photoshop, FCP will ignore it.
dpi settings can only be used by three dimentional output devices like inkjet printers and film recorders.

Best screen capture resolution for FCP

I'm making some tutorials of various computer software.
I'm going to edit them with FCP.
I'm using the MAC built in SHIFT-COMMAND - 3 or 4
in order to snap stills off my screen, and then
import into Final Cut Pro to edit the tutorials with.
The stills, once in the timeline, look pretty fuzzy and
unuseable.
What have others used in terms of resolution, format and such in order to end up with captures off your screen that you'll bring into FCP that end up looking good if you're
going to end up going to video or DVD?
I also have SNAP PRO X to work with, but I still haven't
found the right format or resolution to get around this problem.

Without going into DPI (which is really meaningless in FCP land...as has been argued again and again and again...although if you MUST apply a value just stick in 72, but really it has no effect) the pixel dimensions of stills to import for FCP FULL FRAME are 720x534. Because stills have square pixels and FCP uses rectangular ones. If you want to do any movement on the stills, just increase the dimensions PROPORTIONALLY. 2x would be 1440 x 1064.

DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

Acceptable and Quality Still Photo Resolution for HDV Documentary

I've scanned through several pages of posts on photo resolution here, but I haven't actually found a simple answer to a beginner's question. Two, actually:
1. If someone is supplying you with still photo prints for scanning and use in a documentary (shot in HDV, edited on FCP5), is there a particular size print that you should ask for? Does the broadcast venue (theatrical, TV, etc.) have any relevance?
2. If someone is scanning photos and sending you a CD with them, what are the specs (size, resolution, etc.) you should ask for? And are there "minimum acceptable" specs and "preferred, high quality" specs?

Having worked on several long-form historical docos with hundreds of source photo scans, I'd highly recommend getting the originals in as high a resolution as you can (at least 300 DPI), and getting the entire photo scanned. You just never know when you need to apply pans or zooms or crop into a particular area to improve the edit, and there are many simple ways to prep the selected photos for import.
The simplest is just to do the scaling & cropping in FCP. It will do a fine job of this, but if it turns out most of the photos will be static, you can waste computer resources by importing unnecessarily-large images. As mooblie pointed out, you strictly only need enough resolution to prevent scaling up past 100%, as this will create pixelated lower quality output.
The most common way to prep scans is in Photoshop, where you can scale the image to a desired pixel size very easily. I'd still leave the image at its natural frame size (as scanned), so you have the most creative choice when you are framing it in the timeline using FCPs cropping & motion tabs tools.
If you've got lots of photos and lots of pans & zooms, consider using one of the third-party tools that will help with this, such as Photo to Movie from LQ Graphics, Moving Picture from StageTools, or even the plugin for FCP I wrote to help with the docos I mentioned above. Photo Size for Still photography video

I am currently using Premeire Pro CC. What would be the best size of a still photo to use to put together a still photo video? I have be asked to do this and what size I would like the photos to save time on resizing?

What size will the frame-size be on your timeline? From past experience, either produced at size or at multiples of that seem to work best, though not required. It's a bit quicker to work with if they have similar sizes, but you can set a sequence for a certain frame-size and also to match images to the sequence, so it automatically re-sized them. Of course, larger images do allow for pan & scan or simple choices of which part you do want to include.

Still Photo Size

Just transitioning to FCPX from FCP Express.
I am getting ready to put together a "slide show" consisting of only still photos in FCPX. It will be projected on a 10' screen with a Sanyo PLC-XU110 projector, NTSC SD, interlaced. I am planning on preparing all of the photos in Photoshop.
I'm assuming I should use 640x480 as the size for the "slides", or does it matter as long as I use 4:3 aspect ratio? Does FCPX scale them?
Also, does ppi matter when it comes to FCPX? Does it have to be standard screen resolution of 72ppi? If so, what happens when you zoom-in or use Ken Burns? Does it pixellate? I'm kind of freaked about projecting this from a DVD player onto a 10' screen. Any help from a person experienced in this will be greatly appreciated.

Best RAID block size for media drive?

What block size give you best performance when it comes to pushing data?
For a striped RAID setup.
32 is standard but since most of the media files are big and consistent would a higher value like 128 or even 256 KB be better?

Jerry, if your fiber channel raid is giving you the throughput that you need, don't be concerned.
(I had a quick look through your manual and I'm also confused. But I can't afford that kind of setup so...?)
I have a simple two 250GB LaCie d2 raid 0 set via SoftRaid and firewire 800 using the G5 port and a LaCie card firewire 800 for dual channel setup.
This houses my media for FCP.
My stripe size is set to 128K simply because that's what the SoftRaid manual recommended for video applications.
This two drive setup is fine for multiple SD streams of DV, but can only manage a single 8 bit uncompressed HD 1080i stream without dropped frames.

I'm still using IM6, I hope there's still folks out there who care about older apps! When importing photos, is there an optimum size for IM? Sometimes it seems like my images are too large, especially the panorama shots, and IM can't display the whole image. Thanks!

I'm not saying this is the "only" way but I've gotten used to batch converting folders with images I intend for iMovie slide shows so that they will "fit" the view screen.
Many experienced users will say that it's "better" to just crop your images or at least limit any applied text to areas near the center of the image so they still appear when displayed in slide show mode.
My solution is to use GraphicConverter, which provides two similar methods to batch convert from larger to smaller sizes. From trial and error: I've learned there's indeed a "range" of sizes which will display properly. 640 x 480 @ 72 ppi gives "okay" results in slide shows, I'd recommend 720 x 540 @ 72 ppi as a minimum.
From the GraphicConverter user group, here's the method as given by Jeff Lomicka :
- Drag the folder containing the images to the GC icon, it will open in
the image browser.
- From the "Batch:" button menu, pick "Define batch..."
- Pick "scale" from the list on the left
- Pick "size in pixel" and set the width field to the width of your
screen for the slide show (1024 is typical)
- Pick "resolution" from the list on the left
- Set both numbers to 72
- Click Save... and name it "resize for slide show", or whatever you
want to call it
- "Ok"
- Pick this new batch from the "Batch" button menu
- Set the format to JPEG/JFIF if it isn't already.
- Press "Options" if you want to adjust or check the JPEG parameters
- Do a "Edit"/"Select All" (Apple-A)
- Press "Go"
- A new folder will be created with all the images resized to 1024
pixels wide at 72 DPI.

You should definitely SAVE your original full-size images for use in iPhoto and prints, etc.
And of course, you will probably want to delete those under-size versions from your iPhoto Library after you're finished.

Whats the best external drive setup for FCP and accompanying software?

With all the external Hard Drives out there I am hoping that other users could suggest the best options when setting up FCP to work with an external drive. I am working with both SD and HD and am planning to use DVD Studio, Soundtrack Pro along with Motion and AE.
With all the info out there claiming to be the 'best' it gets a little confusing. I bought a 2T WD HD with Firewire 400, 800 and eSATA connections. With the amount of footage I have to capture this wont last long. And the intention is to archive this footage and making it easy to access in a year or two.
Which is best type of connection? Firewire 800 or eSata? Any Suggestions as to a really good external hard drive set up that I can add to as finances allow?

Not quite sure what this question has to do with Qmaster, but what the heck.
The simple response is get the fastest and biggest external you can. If you are getting a drive mechanism without swappable disks, purchase 2 mechanisms - 1 for use when editing and the second for backing up. Purchase a 3rd drive to back up your system drive.
If you go the swapable drive bay route, you'll pay more for the mechanism but you'll recoup the cost as you can purchase additional bare drives for a fraction of the cost of another whole mechanism.
The fastest connection speed is esata then FW800 then FW400. USB is not appropriate to editing video (but can be used for simple backups).
If you have the resources, something like a Caldigit HDOne is a high performer. If that's out of your range, look into their VR line or something from MacBurley. Granite Digitial also makes good basic devices.

Adjust Photo Size For Web Gallery

I'm uploading a new Web Gallery as I type this....(although nothing appears to be happening at the moment...I decided against my first couple of efforts and deleted those galleries).
I don't see a way to adjust the size of the photos uploaded to the Web Gallery. As each of the photos I'm uploading is approximately 3MB in size, I was hoping there might be an option to compress each of the photos prior to uploading. Am I missing it?
In iPhoto Help, there's a topic for "Choosing the Appropriate Size For Your Photo". Apparently, this only refers to emailed photos, though?
Any thoughts on this?

Have you checked on the size of the files uploaded to the web gallery? They are resized to 800 x 600 pixels. If you select the option to have the full sized image downloaded then the max pixel dimension is 3054 pixels in any direction. If the are larger than than the get resized. Additionally the file is compressed. My 2.7 MB file was downsized to 750 KB.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Looks like Lightroom doesn't like your display profile.
Try removing the profile (don't know how to do it on a Mac) to leave your display uncalibrated. Are the colors still different in Lightroom and Photoshop?

Reducing photo size for email

I'm stumped ... how do I reduce the size of photos for e-mail?

If you are using a client supported by iPhoto you simply select the photo(s) and click email - one of the options is JPEG compression and another is photo size
If you are using Apple Mail then you have a second selection available in the lower right hand corner of the mail create window
If you are using a non supported client including a web browser then you must export the photos first reducing them as part of the export process

Today we create Oracle Tablespace for SAP with 8 GBytes datafiles but we have too many datafiles to managed.
Do you have experimented 16 GBytes, 32 GBytes, 64 Gbytes datafiles for Oracle Tablespaces on this kind of SAP Plateform ?
