Best strategy to replace system files/folders from backup?

I'm having a problem with Mail and Safari quitting upon launch (posted in the Safari for Mac area). Things I've tried in my attempt to solve problem:
-repaired permissions
-cleaned cache
-ran hardware test and removed suspect ram
-ran disk utility and repaired volume (though it said "repaired 1 HFS volume but could not repair other volume" though I only have 1 volume)
-reapplied combined updater for panther along with java update
-note: installed foxfire and it runs fine!
It seems that nothing is working to solve this problem. What would be my "plan of attack" if I were to try to replace the user > library, or whatever's appropriate, using my backup ext hard drive? It's not a bootable drive, so I can't boot from it, but I did back up to it within the last week, so most things are pretty recent. Would the user folder allow for the Library to be copied over by the ext hard drive's version? Any suggestions?

Well, you may have other more serious problems. Perhaps you should consider doing an Archive and Install:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Permanently exclude certain files & folders from backup

I see in the discussions where you can delete certain files or folders from TM backups. Does this exclude those files from future backups as well? Or do you have to go back into TM every time and delete them?
    Thanks.

No. But you can add files/folders to the TM exclusion list in system preferences->TM->options. that will stop future backups of those files/folders.

Can I remove backuped files/folders from Azure Backup storage without un-registor the servers ?
I want to remove some backuped files/folders to compact Azure Backup Storage and to save the cost of Azure Backup.
Scenario 1: remove tempolary files from Azure Backup Storage.
Scenario 2: remove no-recovery files from Azure Backup Storage.
Scenario 3: move the files from backup target folder to other storage's folder.
Now, To remove backup files/folder from Azure Backup storage, I seems to need un-register the servers, and register the server.

Thank you Giri, for quick reply.
I want to save the Azure Backup storage cost, now.
I don't want to pay the Azure Backup storage cost for no-restore-need files until the backup point gets aged.
and I don't want to remove / re-backup the restore need files by un-register/register operation.

  • Transferring personal files/folders from Dell PC to an iPad2 or iPad3?

Is it possible to load some personal files/folders from my existing Dell desktop to an iPad2 or 3? Nothing too big, just some MS Office Word and Excel docs, pictures, and some PDF docs. I'm trying to figure out if I can/should replace my current PC with an iPad, just for personal use, not work. I'm so used to a USB port and flash drive to copy and move stuff and I understand the iPad doesn't have that capability, so I am kind of lost here. I have an iPhone 4 so am a little familiar with the apple navigation. Any suggestions/recommendations from experienced iPad users is appreciated!!

My formatting stays intact. Docs to Go talks about their 'intact technology' that keeps tabs, etc, where they were.
Obviously any mobile app is far less robust than a bonafide word processing program, but minor formatting, bold, italics, underline, tabs, etc seem to transfer quite well.
I don't have any complicated excel spread sheets so I don't have any experience with their functionality.
I've found the docs to to go be virtually seamless. That said, I've never used them with 'fancy formatting', so that may be trial and error.

Use setup assistant which is offered when you setup your new Mac.  It will transfer information from a Time Machine backup, Clone or another Mac.
It's best to do this during setup to avoid issues with duplicate IDs.

Before you go, move the files to I tunes and sync them down.  There is no viable way to stream from your nas drive to the pad.

Just replace my HD, restored from backup but now my iPhone won't sync with iTunes over wifi

Is synching over wi-fi viable?  I've never done it, but when I tried something similar back in the old Palm PDA days, it was S-L-O-W, slow as molasses.  I realize that the i-device are far more modern with faster processors, but wondering whether it's even worth exploring doing this.

  • What is the best strategy to save a file in client computer

I want to save some information in a file in client computer. What is the best strategy to do? There are some ways I can think about. But none of them is good enough for me.
    1. I gave all-permission. So, I can actually write what I want. But, in order to make the program runs on all platform/all client computers, I can't make any assumptions on file system of client computer. So, this is not good.
    2. I can write a file into .javaws directory. But, how can I get file path for this directory? JNLP API does not give this path to us. I can't think a way to get this path for all client computer (WIndown, Mac, Unix).
    3. To write as a muffin. Seems fine. But, I often change server and path. So, once I changed server, the client will loss the file saved since muffin is associated with server and path.
    4. I can just open one file with on path. I think J2SE will treat this file platform dependently. For example, for W2K this file will be put into Desktop. This is bad.
    Any better idea?

In the past I have used the Properties class to do things like this. Using load and store, you can read and write key=value pairs.
I store the file in the user.home directory. You can use System.getProperty("user.home") to get this location.
No guarantees, but I thought that this user.home property was good for any OS with a home directory concept. If that turns out not to be true, maybe the System property java.io.tmpdir would be more consistent across platforms. This, of course, would be subject to delete by the OS/administrators.

  • Not able to copying files/folders from one Document Library to another Document Library using Open with Browser functionality

    Hi All,
We have SharePoint Production server 2013 where users are complaining that they are not able to copy or move files from one document library to another document library using “Open with Explorer” functionality.
We tried to activate publishing features on production server but it did not work. We users reported following errors:
Copying files from one document library to another document library:
Tried to map the document libraries and still not get the error to copy files:
In our UAT environment we are able to copy and move folders from using “Open with Explorer” though.
We have tried to simulate in the UAT environment but could not reproduce the production environment.
Any pointers about this issue would be highly appertained.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi John and all,
One the newly created web applications that we created few days back and navigated to document library, clicked on “Open with Explorer”, we get this error.
We're having a problem opening this location in file explorer. Add this website to your trusted and try again.
We added to the trusted site in Internet Explorer for this web application, cleared the cache and open the site with same document library but still get the same above error.
However, another existing web application (In same the Farm) that we are troubleshooting at the moment, we are able click on “Open with Explorer”,  login in credentials opens and we entered the details we are able to open the document
library and tried to follow these steps:
From Windows Explorer (using with Open with Explorer), tried to copy or move a files to
    source document library.
From Windows Explorer moved this file to another destination document library and we got this error.
What we have to achieve is users should be able to copy files and folders using
Open with Explorer functionality. We don’t know why Open with Explorer
functionality not work working for our environment.
    Are we doing something wrong?
We have referred to following websites.
we hope concepts of copying / Moving files are similar as SharePoint 2010. Our production environment is SharePoint 2013.

  • In idvd 6.0.1 how do I delete/remove files/folders from the media pane?

for some reason some of the folders in my photos media pane are now empty? how do I get rid of those folders?

iDVD is a tool for creating videoDVDs from some media (stills, video, music)
it is NOT the Finder, which is the Mac's "app" to handle files&folders
and it is NOT the "creator" of stills (iPhoto), videos (iMovie) or music (iTunes)

  • Cannot restore some files/folders from Time Machine Backup

When I try and restore files or folders from my Pictures folder, which is a sub folder of my user I get the message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access xxxx". As far as I can tell this has only just started to happen because I've recovered stuff from the folder since I bought the machine in July. Yesterday I deleted an old Time Machine backup folder from the Time Machine disc. This caused empty trash to go berserk - the "files to delete" count went negative and I had to stop/restart the empty trash command about 20 times before it sorted itself out. Maybe this has screwed some permissions somewhere? I have run disc utility and repaied permissions on my hard drive and verified the TM drive. Still no joy. The permissions for Pictures look OK. Anyone any ideas?

Probably you corrupted your Time Machine Backup by manually deleting older backups- that is dangerous.

  • Using jdk1.3.1 to transfer files/folders from one directory to another

I am writing a simple program to transfer files and folders from one directory to another
For example, I have some files and folders in C:\send\ directory.
I want to know how to move them to C:\receive\ directory.
Can someone please tell me which class I should use and which method?
I need to complete this urgently.
    Thanks.
    Deeply appreciate it.

not very difficult. You should use the File class and the "renameTo" method.
    Example:
      File origin = new File("c:\\lost\\myFile.zer");
      File dest = new File("c:\\found\\myFile.zer");
origin.renameTo(dest);Of course you have to take care that the file doesn't exists previously, etc. But i think that all you need is in the File class.
    Hope this helps.

  • Deleteing files/folders from network drive

I have a USB drive connected in to my Airport Extreme and I have conifgured user level access accounts for this. The four the iMac G4, iMac G5, iBook and Powerbook are all able to copy and delete files/folders with no problems. My Windows Vista machine is able to copy files/folders but I am only able to delete folders when they contain no files or sub-folders - sadly I do not have access to the full message but it is related to not having the correct permissions.
The USB drive is Mac OS X Extended format as a Fat 32 format drive did not appear on the network (this was before the recent Airport update though).
Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so - do you know of a way around it?

    Guess it's just me
    Any ideas?
