Best Surround Sound Setup for MBP

Hi, I recently bought the new MBP and am looking into getting some good speakers for it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which logitech speakers would sound the best on it, and what type of cords I would need in order to have surround sound? Also I am not trying to break the bank here, so the probably the best speakers for the money would be the best selection.
Thanks

I've found the Logitech Z-5500 are a great bang for the buck. They're a bit pricey for computer speakers but they put out plenty of power and sound quite decent for a complete system with decoder, amp and speakers. The controller pod has an optical input that will take any standard optical S/PDIF signal, like that of the MBP (using the right cable; lots of TOSlink optical cables come with little TOSlink to 1/8" optical adapters and you need that for the MBP connection). It does Dolby Digital and DTS decoding in 5.1 format.

  • The best surround sound solution for my room?

I have a 32" HDTV but the speakers seem to be weak to my ears. I'm looking to get a few speakers and a receiver for my bedroom but have no idea on what exactly I should get. My T.V. sits in front of my bed on my dresser with my PS3 next to it. I thought about mounting my T.V. to my wall and setting a receiver on my dresser with two speakers hanging on each side of my T.V. I have also thought of placing one speaker in the top of each corner in my room, but don't know how to manage the wires. I have looked at the wireless speakers but just don't know exactly what to look for. What I really want is a few speakers on the same wall as my T.V. and a few opposite that wall so I can still hear it as if I was right next to it while lying down. I am just trying to get the very best possible sound from my cable box, laptop, and my PS3. I don't necessarily have a budget as of now but I will probably by the beginning of next year.

Without knowing what your looking to spend its hard to recommend something.  Without buying separates the next best thing is the higher end HT in a box with either a Denon or Yamaha receiver even.  If low budget is what your looking for and your not expecting a great deal of amazing sound from the system then the Samsung, LG, and Sony HT in a box will work. Just remember your spending anywhere from $300 to $400 dollars on a complete system when an ok receiver  alone will cost about the same. If your room is relatively small the Budget friendly HT in a box will be fine though. So please just keep that in mind so you understand what your buying.

  • Detect Surround Sound Setup?

I might be imagining things, but it seems like the DVDs I own can correctly assess when I am using a surround sound setup (i.e., if I have a digital cable connected to my DVD player) and when I don't. I'd like to do the same for my DVD to automatically choose between my Dolby 5.0 soundtrack and Dolby 2.0 soundtracks. Yet in looking through the DVD Studio Pro SPRM list, it seems as if I can only detect whether my player has AC-3 capability, which isn't enough information to determine whether Dolby 5.0 might be supported on this setup.
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!
    G5 Dual 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Professional Hollywood DVDs that may check SPRM15, usually to check for DTS capabilities. This is why sometimes when you chose DTS in disc setup you are presented with a screen "are you sure?" that gives you an option to confirm your choice and not damaging your speakers. But SPRM15 value can reflect other audio capabilities of the player such as karaoke mixing (in combination with SPRM11).
You can write a script based on SPRM15 to chose preferable sound stream
This ability is limited only to player's setup, and cannot be expanded to check your audio system.

  • Recommended Surround Sound Setup?

    Hello, everyone.
I was wondering what you would recommend for a sound system for a Mac Pro and Final Cut Pro X. I will be doing corporate videos, short and feature films, and music videos.
    My current setup is:
    Hafler P1500 trans amp
Mackie micro series analog mixer 8 channels
    2 JBL 4206 monitors
I have the Mac Pro's 1/4" analog out going to a RCA Y adapter that goes into the Macki mixer. This is old and analog and stereo, not surround, obviously.
So I was looking at updating to a surround sound 5.1 setup that is digital. I can scrap my current setup, if needed.
Do you recommend getting a Denon A/V receiver and going out the optical to the receiver and then just getting a surround satellite setup from Best Buy? Or is there a better setup designed specifically for use with a Mac (USB/FireWire?)?
Thank you for your time and any advice or tips you have.
    Thanks!
    Scot

    Hi,
I guess a lot depends on your budget and how serious you are about mixing for surround. Logitech makes an inexpensive THX certified 5.1 system (the Z906 $400) which has a digital input and sounds pretty good.
If you are doing professional surround mixing, however, you'll probably want to get some pro speakers. One very popular company is NHT. Check out their surround systems which start at $800: http://www.nhthifi.com/Systems
As far as the digital-to-analog hardware goes, most folks use Firewire interfaces or special PCI cards. Check out 8 channel Firewire interfaces from MOTU, Avid, RME.
Here's a short article I wrote which introduces some key concepts of 5.1 sound: http://cycling74.com/2006/05/30/51-overview/

  • Optical audio and surround sound speakers for my Mac Pro

In the back of my Mac Pro there's an in and out for Optical Audio. What is this and are there any surround sound speaker systems out there that will plug into it? Most surround sound speakers seem to require a PC-style triple-input, with three jacks (Green to front, Orange to centre and Black to rear channels). Very few surround sound systems have the additional option for a single headphone socket-style jack, and I'm not sure if they will work terribly well with this single connection.
Can anyone recommend some speaker choices, particularly in the UK, that will give me good surround sound from the optical audio or single headphone jacks? Many thanks.

You might want to look at a device called the Griffin FireWave: [http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/firewave]
It connects to your MacPro via firewire, and has the green/orange/black jacks out to a standard 5.1 speaker system.
It comes with a software application that lets you customize the sound, and also synthesize surround from mono, stereo, etc., sources.
It would definitely open up your choices for speaker systems. I'm using one with a Klipsch 5.1 Promedia set of speakers. Works and sounds great.

  • HT4557 whats the best itunes/appleID setup for family of 3 with 3 ipads, 3 iphones, one PC with all music on.  if we use 3 separate ones how do we share purchased and home content?

been with apple for years.  one itunes/appleID in use for family - all purchases and downloads on the one account..
now got 3 ipads, 3 iphones and when we update the software, we seem to get text/facetime issues due to multiple email addresses and phone numbers for the different devices that each individual uses.  For example, I send a text and it appears to have come from my wife or son to the recipient.  Not good !
there seems to be direction from apple that each of us should use our own apple id, thogh how do I link the accounts so enable family sharing of music/media we have purchased etc - Id also like to be able to review and keep a private eye on what my son downloads as he is 11 yrs old ! I manage this currently as we allow him access to the password for itunes (as we all use the same id today)
Am i better setting up accounts for my wife and son independent of my own, or not. Each of us would like access to the family content we have and the master library of synced content.  I just want the most simplistic approach that apple, or others would recommend.
Is there a better or optimum setup for a family as we cannot be alone.....

Thanks for the help, but a follow up question now.
My iPhone won't arrive for a little while, but my wife already got hers and she wants to set it up now. Using my Apple ID for the purchases, if she starts setting hers up, can she change her iCloud ID to something else quickly? It keeps telling us that we have to sign in with the AppleID first.
Should we just set up an iCloud account via normal internet before trying all this via iPhone?

  • Surround sound support for new MB aluminum?

    Hello, so here's the deal:
I've been looking at a few pairs of headphones that will be plugged in through the USB port and there's a pair that supports 5.1 surround sound and a pair that supports 7.1 (both have 8 speakers built into the headphones).
Does anyone know what kind of surround sound support the new macbook aluminum has, if any?
The deal is that the headphones feature amps (it goes: usb -> amp -> control pod -> headphones), so technically it doesn't require drivers from the Mac into order to get it working, but I don't believe that it will work without the correct digital audio output from the Macbook itself.
Any help on this issue would make me grateful.
PS: if there is either more or less support on the Windows side (via bootcamp) I would love to know that too, because in my switch to Mac, I noticed that it really doesn't have any dedicated control of the sound drivers, whereas Windows XP does.
    Thanks in advance.

Ironically there's apparently a bug that forces all my flash videos to be remixed into 5.1 surround. VERY annoying because now even at hte lowest volume levels it's super loud...

  • What's the best FCP6 easy setup for HD shot on Canon XHA1?

Hi, I'm sorry to ask such a novice question, but I want to make sure I'm starting correctly. Anyone have advice on the best easy setup to use for a project that will be predominantly footage shot in HD at 30P on the Canon XH-A1? It will also include a little bit of HD footage shot through a Canon 5D markii, but I think I understand how to bring those clips in later using log and transfer and the appropriate Canon EOS codec deal.
I'm just still not sure of the difference between HDV, DVCPRO HD, and all those other easy presets that are listed out...
    thanks much!

I tried to search through other threads before posting my question, but I guess I didn't come across yours.
It was in response to your other question on the forums... So it was an answer directly to you.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2486111&tstart=0
As for your other question, that I also answered...use the camera if you want to shoot 30F or 24F, or shoot 60i and use the deck. Those are your choices. There is no deck that deals with Canon's F format...and they don't make decks. Silly stupid.

  • Best hard drive setup for Logic Pro?..

    Hi all,
I'm about to get a Mac Pro, and I was wondering a bit about the best hard drive set up for running Logic Pro.
    1. Should I go with Western Digital Caviar SE ? Noise is a primary issue, I'd like them to be as silent as possible. Could anybody tell me their experiences with this disc?.. I also hear that Samsungs Spinpoint are almost silent. Any truth to this? (I want my discs in sizes of 500Gb.)
    2. Is this a good setup:
    D1: Mac OS, Logic Pro
    D2: Audio for Logic Pro
D3: Sample libraries, including direct from disc streaming.
    3. I seem to remember from another post that someone wrote that raiding discs could actually decrease performance when working with audio. Is this the case?
    Thanks,
    Curvebender.

Yes, excellent way to go. One suggestion: on your sample or audio drive, or an external FW, install a basic system + Logic app only. This enables you to have another system to boot from in case of trouble, or you can use it as a test bed for future updates etc. without affecting your primary system. You'd only boot into this drive in case of problems or for testing. I currently have Leopard running on one drive to test it out as I don't want to move to 10.5.x yet.

  • Whats the best external drive setup for FCP and accompanying software?

With all the external Hard Drives out there I am hoping that other users could suggest the best options when setting up FCP to work with an external drive. I am working with both SD and HD and am planning to use DVD Studio, Soundtrack Pro along with Motion and AE.
With all the info out there claiming to be the 'best' it gets a little confusing. I bought a 2T WD HD with Firewire 400, 800 and eSATA connections. With the amount of footage I have to capture this wont last long. And the intention is to archive this footage and making it easy to access in a year or two.
Which is best type of connection? Firewire 800 or eSata? Any Suggestions as to a really good external hard drive set up that I can add to as finances allow?

Not quite sure what this question has to do with Qmaster, but what the heck.
The simple response is get the fastest and biggest external you can. If you are getting a drive mechanism without swappable disks, purchase 2 mechanisms - 1 for use when editing and the second for backing up. Purchase a 3rd drive to back up your system drive.
If you go the swapable drive bay route, you'll pay more for the mechanism but you'll recoup the cost as you can purchase additional bare drives for a fraction of the cost of another whole mechanism.
The fastest connection speed is esata then FW800 then FW400. USB is not appropriate to editing video (but can be used for simple backups).
If you have the resources, something like a Caldigit HDOne is a high performer. If that's out of your range, look into their VR line or something from MacBurley. Granite Digitial also makes good basic devices.
    Have fun.

  • What's the best mac configuration setup for Logic?

I think that I didn't configure my Mac good enough to work with Logic and I hear that there is a special configuration that should be used to have everhything work together as best as possible in terems of memory use etc. But what are the best settings? And where do i configure them?

Are you talking about within logic or the actual system?
as far as logic is concerned, the preferences / audio tab will offer you most of the controls to optimize logic for your system.
as far as the actual mac, the best would obviously be a 12 core mac pro, speced till it would spec no more LOL.
but a I5 imac and that much ram is still a reasonable beast in the home studio stakes.
the best way to use all the RAM is to run logic in 64 bit,
find logics icon in the finder, and either right/ctrl click and click get info or press cmd-I.
this will bring up the get info dialog, and uncheck run in 32bit.
hey presto, logic can get to 16gb of RAM (in theory).

  • Macbook Pro 5.1 surround Sound setup, is it possible?

    Hi all,
I'm new to the world of Mac and so far I'm extremely impressed. I'm a film maker and I'm very down with the editing process, one area where I'm not to savvy, is sound. Soundtrack Pro looks great and perfect for a 5.1 mix for some of my upcoming short films I'm putting together. I'm not to sure if the Macbook pro is designed for mixing 5.1 in but it's all I have to work with.
My question is, what equipment would I need exactly, I understand the headphone port works as an optical for Dolby Digital, but can I create a 5.1 mix in Soundtrack pro and work with it? I'm confused as there's so many different questions and answers flying around, none of it comes to a solid conclusion.
In effect, I have my Macbook Pro, what items would I need to get this show on the road.I'm not playing games or anything like that, I just want to create a 5.1 mix for a short film.
    Many Thanks
    Ash

    Hi
I have a 5.1 system for my MacBook (not Pro). It consists of a Firewave firewire interface connected to an Altec Lansing speaker system. The output from the Firewave needs 3 stereo cables which plug into the back of the speaker bass unit. This set up will allow full 5.1 mixing and although I haven't tried Soundtrack pro I expect it will work ok. See: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/firewave
Be careful what you buy. The first system I bought was a home theatre system with an optical interface. Although this would play pre-mixed 5.1 DVD movies, it would NOT allow general 5.1 audio mixing from an application. Eventually I passed it on to a friend.

  • Best Mac Pro Setup for Photoshop CS5

I've read around that it's not needed to have the fastest (and costliest)  Mac Pro to run Photoshop CS5 at it's best.
However, there doesn't seem to exist any discussions involving the latest models (Feb 2012).
Which would be the optimal Mac Pro available today for running large files (1GB and up) in Photoshop CS5?

LOTs of RAM, fast 6-core 3.33GHz for starters.
Mac Pro Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3

    Optimize CS5 CS4 Mac OS X

  • Best Video Editing Tool For MBP

Hey Fellas recently i switched from a windows pc to MBP. I have a small business of making motion movies for various clients of mine. • Best Hard Drive Setup for Premiere Pro CS5.5

I'm running Premiere Pro cs5.5 on a Dell XPS 8300 (I know, I know!) with an i72600 chip and a 560TI card. The system came with two 500 GB Sata hard drives in a Raid0 configuration. I've seen a lot about proper hard drive setup but I'm a newbie (hence the Dell - I purchased before I read the forums). Should I add a third (or more) drive? How can I configure them taking into account what's already onboard? thanks very much!

If it were me, I'd add at least two more hard drives.  A smallish one around 250 to 320 GB for the System drive.  I'd reinstall Windows onto that.
Then I'd break out the RAID into separate drives, using one for Project and Scratch files and one for Exports.
The second new drive would be a really big one - 1TB or more.  This I'd use exclusively for Media.*
    * If I had a tapeless camera, such as AVCHD, then I'd definitely build in some kind of data safety, like at least a second 1TB drive for a RAID 1. Or if I had more money, add a third 1TB and a RAID controller card to make it a RAID 3.
