Best Trategy to reduce the Database Size

Hi Everyone,
In our Client's Landscape SAP systems have been upgraded to newer versions whereas our client want
one copy of older Production systems (one copy to retain)
1) SAP R/3 4.6 C system  (database size of this system is approx 2TB)
2) SAP BW 3.0 (database size of this system is approx 2TB)
Now CLient wants us to reduce the database size via re-organization because Archiving of IDOCs & Links we have already done
Client has recommended for :
1) Oracle Export/Import: Only Oracle DBA can do (ignore this one)
2) Database Reorganization : We have tried Reoragnization via BRtools but found very tedious 9 (ignore this one)
3) SAP Export/Import : Via this way we want to reduce the database size
Can anybody Tell us How much Free space do we require in order at OS level in order to store the Database Export
of Two Databases of size around 4TB & what would be the best strategy of reducing the Dabase size.
Via SAP Export/Import how much approx how much database size will be reduced
Thanks & Regards
Deepak Gosain

Hi,

The only realistic way to know is to do a system copy of the production system on a testbed system and to test the Database Export.
If you really want to decrease the database size you will have to archive a lot more than the IDOC archiving object.

  • How to reduce the database size based on MS SQL/Oracle?

    Hi,
I had deleted severy clients via SCC5, but the database size is more and more bigger. Do you know how to reduce the database size.
my platform is: NT, MS SQL 2005
                           NT, Oracle 10.2
    Best Regards,
    Simon Shen

    Hi Simon,
In the case of SQL you need to check how many space free you have in your datafiles and the based on that you need to Shrink them using DBCC SHRINKFILE command.
Find a couple of reference docs here,
    http://www.intermedia.net/support/kb/default.asp?id=996
    http://doc.ddart.net/mssql/sql70/dbcc_21.htm
Also i'm pretty sure that if your check the properties of the datafiles in MSSQL Enterprise Manager you get a "Shrink" option.

  • Rebuild Database did not reduce the database size

I just completed a rebuild database. The rebuild completed much quicker than anticipated and in the end the did not reduce in size.
This is my first rebuild and since original installation I have deleted a number of masters. From my understanding thumbnails and previews are not deleted when the master is deleted. In order to delete the thumbnails and previews the db must be rebuilt. Is this correct?
The db is over 31.1gb. The rebuild took approx 10 minutes and when completed the db size was still 31.1gb. There was a message during the rebuild that read "Recovering projects". I was expecting to see stats showing previews and thumbnails being generated in the activity window but don't see it. Has the db been rebuilt?
    Thanks for any assistance.

Rebuilding the database is for disaster-recovery, not file maintenance. I certainly wouldn't do it unless something was fundamentally broken and the application didn't run.
"rebuilding" the database seems to do the following:
    (1) remove the database file completely (not even to the trash, it destroys the database utterly)
    (2) run through the plist files and reconstruct a brand-new database from them all
I checked this (on an empty library) using hard-links from the commandline, and step (1) above scared me sufficiently that I'd only rebuild the database as an absolute last resort.
Now, 31GB seems a lot for a database that only took 10 minutes to rebuild - are you sure you're not telling us the size of the library (to find the database size, right-click on the library and select view-package-contents, then open the 'Aperture.aplib' folder and find the size of the 'Library.apdb' file. That's the file you're changing when you 'rebuild database'.)
If you're telling us the size of the entire aperture library instead, then that size will be completely dominated by the master RAW files you've imported. I'd guess your library will be less than 10MB.
My understanding is that previews are deleted (since they're stored as separate files alongside the master image, if you look in the folder hierarchy), but thumbnails aren't. The thumbnails are aggregated together into one-file-per-project (presumably for speed of access), and I'd guess the space is reclaimed for future use, but the file doesn't get any smaller. That's a classic trade-off for speed-of-access, and users like us are normally very keen on things being fast

Deleting large data would have ultimately put ghost cleanup into action. You would not be able to free space using shrink operation untill it completes. So wait for time and then start shrinking. You should note that shrinking would cause fragmentation and
you would have to rebuild indexes after shrinking is completed

  • Reducing the database size

I have upgraded from a G5 desktop to a macbook pro. Wow, big speed increase. I have been increasingly going into photography and my aperture 3 (love it compared to version 2!) is at 500 or so gigs. That would include the imported iPhoto database.
My MBP has a 750 gb hard drive.
Obviously, memory is going to be a problem soon. I could upgrade to 1TB hard drive, but that won't really address the problem for long.
I did upgrade to 8bg for memory, huge speed boost to ap3.
I am looking over my entire library and am wondering how many of the pictures I really need on the laptop, which is intended more for a working type of deal. My G5 may be slow, but it runs. Hot. But it runs and runs and runs.
So my thoughts are what if I were to keep the iphoto library on the G5 and just keep current pics on the laptop? The new raw images are chomping through drive space quick and I'm just wondering how to streamline the library.
I've read many pro's and con's about one database Vs referenced files. I'm a man on the go with my camera and laptop strapped to my back. Just don't want to deal with another device. Tried it, it worked with FW 800, but really, hope to not go that route.
Therefore, having given that background info, here's what my thoughts are. I'm open for suggestions and discussions please.
#1 - is it possible to extract/remove just the iphoto portion of the library that is now embedded in the database? I don't need to so much as export it out as it is on multiple backups, TM backups, and on the G5. I would like to simply remove the iphoto database for now.
#2 - I would also maybe like to do a similar approach to various other photos that are part of ap3. Is it possible to remove "chunks" (so to speak) of the database through ap3?
#3 - What other options might exist? I do want to keep it all in the one ap3 database on the 750 gb hard drive for now. I can always go referenced later if I should choose that route.
#4 - Are there compression programs? Any other options I've not mentioned?
    Thanks

I do appreciate the information. I am super hesitant to have to connect to an external drive as I am constantly doing adjustments. It is just what I do. I take pics, load em in, and then run them through all manner of changes through CS4 and photoframe 4.6.4 and photomatix HDR. I love editing. Odd thing is, I can finish with a clients pictures and go back over them a month later and see so many things to change.
I love doing this as much as I love to take pictures.
I suppose the best thing is to get the max internal drive. I did try to use an external FW 800 drive for a while, but carrying around another hard drive, power cord, etc was a pain and my backpack went from full to overly stuffed. Just talking about the reality of it.
I live on the move, so mobility has become everything for me. I'll consider your words and keep trying to figure out what to do.
I'm guessing a 1 TB drive is as large as I can get right now?
    Thanks

  • How do I reduce the database size that teststand creates

Currently the test report access database file is growing like crazy.  Its now around 500mb.  I forcast in a month or two is will be 1 Gig.  Currently things are stored in verbose (complete mode).  What does one need to do to make it store in terse mode.  I took over the project from someone else and have not had Test Stand training.
    Thanks

You can filter the results of a TestStand execution.  This would minimize what is logged to the database.
    (1)  From the Sequence Editor goto Configure -> Database Options.
    (2)  Here you can set a Result Filtering Expression.  For instance, if you only to record the steps that failed select "Ignore Passed/Done/Skipped"
The other option is to change the Schema that logs the execution to a database.  The Schema represents a mapping of data from TestStand to the tables and records of a database.  You can create a custom Schema or modify an existing Schema. For more information, please take a look at Chapter 6 of the TestStand Reference Manual.

  • What is the best method to reduce the Render size?

    hi,
my movie files which i want to edit come to a total of 4GB and when i edit the movie and render the files it comes to a size of 20GB!..thats way to large and will take forever to compressor or export to a another format.
What do you guys recommend i do?..is it something to do with the timeline when i start a new file?.

do you mean that the VOB files totalled at 4gig, and that the converted files, the .mov's are 20gig?
Firstly, .mov doesn't really help in terms of describing the codec/format the media file is in... the '.mov' extension is a container/wrapper, not the codec. In the Final Cut Pro browser window it will tell you the actual codec (look for the colomn headed 'compressor').
The VOB files you converted are from a DVD, so by default, are compressed and small...
Now, assuming the codec is DV (pal) it would make sense that your files have gone from 4 to 20 gig's...
Unless i've totally misunderstood your problem...

  • How do I reduce the file size of a pdf to email?

I have a 260 MB pdf file generated from Photoshop 6.  I can't seem to reduce the size in Photoshop.  Is there anyway to reduce the pdf outside of Photoshop?  Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Scott,
That's a pretty big PDF! You'll have to reduce it pretty dramatically to attach it to an email. But, you can use Acrobat to reduce the file size. Please see this video for pointers: https://acrobatusers.com/tutorials/how-to-compress-a-pdf-file
If you don't have Acrobat, you can try it for free for 30 days. For more information, see www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.

Can any body suggest me how to solve this.....
    Thanks in Advance..
    Kasi Chukka

    Hi Kasi,
Your question is not very clear, from the looks of it, the load on your client's system will be doubling soon.
You need to look at the system stats on how the system is handling the current load, use transactions ST06, ST04 and ST02 to check if the DB hit ratios are as expected, the cpu idle time, the busy periods. Identify if there is large amounts of paging on the server(candidate for increase in real memory).
On AIX level, you will need to look at CPU / Memory usage.
On SAP Application server, you need to look at SAP Buffers.
On Oracle end, look at SGA stats, if it need to increase, the data growth that is current and estimated growth (DB02).
You will not get an exact answer to it, you will need to analyze the existing load and then estimate (guess). The hardware upgrade will also depend on what the client is willing to spend, its always a good practise to add 20% to what you have estimated as these figures are never accurate.
    All the best.
    Cheers,

    Hi IndianLamp,
Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
Based on your issue, you mean that you want t reduce the installation size of the version of VS Preview, am I right?
If yes, I know that when we download the version of the VS Preview from the Microsoft Official, it is default that the install package size. However, you can try to unselect some components during the installation, it will reduce the installation size of

  • Reducing the file size Pages

I am trying to reduce the file size of a document in Pages. It has many jpegs. When I use File>Reduce File Size or Format>Image>Reduce File Size, I get stuck at "Determining potential file size reduction ..." and it will go no further. Selecting "Cancel" or "Reduce" has no effect. I need to to a forced quit to get anywhere. Thanks

To use the Reduce file size isn't the best way to do it but the easiest if it works. You probably have an image clogging the process.
Instead reduce the image sizes in a graphical application suited for it. Do the cropping of the images first if you haven't done that already. Then down size the resolution to about 300 dpi if you want to print the document images. If it is only going to show on the screen you can down size the images to about 75 dpi.

  • How can I reduce the file size of 3 videos?...

...without losing quality? These three videos are as follows in terms of size and length of the video:
    1) 148MB 19minutes
    2) 357MB 18minutes
    3) 164MB 14minutes
I tried using a video converter to reduce the bit rate in order to reduce the size, which i know affects the quality, but that did not actually work to reduce the file size this time.
I thought perhaps i should ask my forum friends for help on this matter. How,if at all, can I get all three of these MOV's under 100mb or to a total of 300mb for all 3 and preserve quality? It has to be able to play on an ipad (MOV or MP4). Thanks for your help!

I think that the point that David was trying to make is that reducing the amount of information originally provided by a product or part of it in order to make it smaller will inevitably reduce the efficiency of the product itself.
However, you don't have access to the original masters? Then you might be after a good compromise, meaning a video that can display decent quality while playing at its original frame size (say on the web).
Does this mean that there is no real way to reduce the size without losing quality?
If your target is the web there is a way to reduce the file size and still make it look decent enough. Re-compression means loss of source information but video compression is an art on its own and can produce some amazing results!
    Not without testing though.
Now back to my previous post, use Compressor to try to reduce the file size and compare the result quality. Trust your eyes and be honest with yourself.

  • How can I reduce the file size when PDF Optimizer does not do much?

I have a PDF form that exists of 48 pages. 44 pages are forms / have form fields, the other 4 are just informative. Each form-page has approx. 80 fields (checkboxes, text fields).
When I started setting up the PDF form the file size was 12 MB and I had placed fields on 21 pages. Then with 34 pages the file size was 19 MB. And with 40 pages it was 35 MB big! Finally with 44 pages the file size is 34 MB.
So I searched with Google and found some tips. Using the "PDF Optimizer" option inside Acrobat for example. So I did, and the file was reduced only with 3 MB... 31 MB was the file. Also used the option "Save as.... Optimized".... no difference. I also found a suggestion about removing embedded fonts. Using the "Audit Space Usage" option I noticed the fonts taking many MegaBytes:
    * Content Streams: 5.287.000     15,09 %
    * Fonts:                24.556.810     70,08 %  !!
    * Acrobat forms:      3.349.164    12,05 %
In the older PDF version (I saved and kept this one too) with just 21 pages with form-fields, the  "Audit Space Usage" shows:
    * Content Streams: 5.292.000     40,14 %
    * Fonts:                 1.290.224     9,79 %
    * Acrobat forms:      1.588.758    12,05 %
So I could save many many MegaBytes by -UnEmbedding- fonts. But if I do this (unembed ALL fonts), the file size stays almost the same!?!?!? Why? What can I do to reduce the file size? I would like it to be 8 MB if possible (32 MB -  24 MB = 8 MB)?
    Thank you for your help!

If you have authored the form, reduce the number of different fonts for the content and form fields.
Any font used in a form field will cause that font to be embedded into the PDF.
If you are going to Optimize the PDF be very careful with forms. Optimization does a lot of removal of items and rearranging of items which can really mess up forms.
