  • Best absolute beginner book

    Hi eveyrone,
I need opinions here... I would like to know what the best ABSOLUTE beginner book would be, for Java - in your opinion. I've been messing with Java for the past couple days.. and haven't got very far.
I have used Visual Basic in the past. I do not know C/C++.
    Thanks for the opinions!

There's no absolute best. A lot of it depends on the individual's style, etc.
All of the following should be decent. Check them out and find out which ones work best for you.
    Sun's basic Java tutorial
Sun's New To Java Center. Includes an overview of what Java is, instructions for setting up Java, an intro to programming (that includes links to the above tutorial or to parts of it), quizzes, a list of resources, and info on certification and courses.
http://javaalmanac.com. A couple dozen code examples that supplement The Java Developers Almanac.
jGuru. A general Java resource site. Includes FAQs, forums, courses, more.
JavaRanch. To quote the tagline on their homepage: "a friendly place for Java greenhorns." FAQs, forums (moderated, I believe), sample code, all kinds of goodies for newbies. From what I've heard, they live up to the "friendly" claim.

    Good day!
This is a user to user Forum, so you are not really addressing Adobe here, even though some Adobe employees thankfully have been dropping by. (edit: Actually they are more likely to frequent the regular Photoshop Forum.)

  • Looking for a comprehensive online tutorial or book

    Hello Guys!
I am looking for a comprehensive online tutorial or book that would contain all steps involving java web application development.
For example, it would be cool if it would contain requirement definition, design, implementation, etc. and how all that is applied to java web application development. Also, it would be neat if it would provide templates regarding diagrams for each stage of the development.
I thank you guys in advence for your help,
    John

    Thanks benubach!
There appears to be a lot of information but it seems
that most of it is simply a Java tutorial. Maybe I
simply can't quite find the particular doc on that
    page.
I am interested in a web program development guide
including how each of the steps (requirement
definition, design, implementation, etc.) in the
process are created. It also be nice if the info
would focus on using java/jsp in the implementation
of each of steps in the process.
    Thanks,
JohnI doubt such a document exists. I was hoping to find something similar that didn't resolve around a trivial case, but gave up after a while. This seems to be something that is learned more with working with others as well as reading many little things and building on each other.

  • Best tutorial on converting from a PC

I am a newbie to using a MAC after 15 years on a PC. Looking for the best tutorial out there for a crash course. Thanks!

Hello, One thing you may want to consider is how to view all your years of documents from your PC. Apple offers iWork and uses apps Pages (word processing) and Numbers (spreadsheet), and Keynote (presentations).
You can open your Office docs with iWork but for me, I found iWork difficult to use.
There is also Open Office (openoffice.org). I do not have much experience with this but have used it a few times to open Word docs. I haven't used it to create any docs though...
Finally there is Office for Mac. I've just recently purchased this and there are some differences from MS Office...I'm still finding them so can't give a lot of detail here..
I switched back to Mac in 06 and have been very happy. You may have already done this but go into an Apple store and play around with one. This will help you understand where to move your PC files. Or as mentioned, the Apple store will do this for you.
Then there is this forum. Lots of friendly and knowledgeable people here.
    Good Luck!

  • URGENT !!! ANY GOOD BOOK FOR JMF - RTP programming ????

Can you propose some books about JMF and RTP/RTCP programming ??
    Thanks in advance !!!

The only JMF books available are "Essential JMF - Java Media Framework" by Rob Gordon (ISBN 0130801046), "Core Java Media Framework" by Linden deCarmo (ISBN 0130115193) and "Programming with the Java Media Framework" by Sean C. Sullivan, et. al. (ISBN 0471251690). All of them are very out-of-date and only cover JMF 1.x (i.e. no audio / video capture and no RTP). All of them were not very good to begin with but "Essential JMF" is probably the better of the three.

  • HOW TO LEARN Photoshop Elements "tutorial" or "book" ?

hello.  newby here.  can anyone recommend a good Photoshop Elements online "tutorial" or "book" that I can purchase to learn the "ins & outs" of PSE5.0?  I'm not that tech savvy, but I do have enough knowledge to tool around PSE making fixes here and there using clone, brush, etc.  I just can not find an efficient way to learn all about file specs, batching, converting to, etc.  any help would be greatly appreciated.  thank you!

    Hi,
You should take a look at www.lynda.com. They made al lot of courses also about photoshop elements. I don't know if PSE 5.0 is still available, but you can always check. If i am right you can also see what the content is of the course. I watched a few of these courses and i think it's very good.
    Hope it helps.
    Kind regards,
    Maarten.

  • Best oracle RAC book

can any one suggest me a best oracle book beyond documentation...
    sure,
we can understand all the concepts through the documentation. have gone through clusterware administration and rac administration twice.
can any one tell me best book for troubleshooting basic oracle rac issues. and tuning the oracle rac. wait events etc.

Julian Dyke RAC books are considered to be among the best RAC available books:
Pro Oracle Database 10g Rac on Linux: Installation, Administration And Performance by Julian Dyke, S Shaw
Pro Oracle Database 11g Rac on Linux by Steve Shaw,Julian Dyke,Martin Bach
However these books are not specialized in RAC troubleshooting. For RAC 10g a very good RAC wait event documentation can be found in Oracle wait interface: a practical guide to performance diagnostics & tuning by Richmond Shee,Kirtikumar Deshpande,K. Gopalakrishnan.

  • Anyone give me the best tutorial site for servlets nd jsp

hi ,i want to know the servlets in deeply... so plz give best tutorial sites...
    thanks in advance...

    Hi,
If you want to learn Servlets "deeply" - you need to understand how the Servlet Container works, along with the Servlet API.
You can check out the Servlet Container Jetty ( http://jetty.mortbay.org/ ). You can download the Source Code & see how the Server ticks !
And, of course,....practice...practice...lots of practice.......:) !

There isn't an end to end tutorial with the stack you are looking at, but:L
You can start with this tutorial that uses EclipseLink for JPA to build the model layer:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe11jdev/ps1/ejb/ejb.html
Here is a little example of how you can use Trinidad components (open source) in JDeveloper 11g for visual JSF development:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/shay/2009/02/using_trinidad_in_jdeveloper_1.html
using MySQL would just mean adding the MySQL JDBC driver to JDeveloper, and to the integrated WebLogic - like this:

  • Best iphoto 11 book for creating a recipe book?

...Just upgraded iPhoto 11 and want to make a book that will allow photos (showing how to prepare dishes) AND plenty of space for text on the same page. The options I have seen so far seem to offer 2 possibilities: either (a) photos + very little space for text or (b) text only.
    Suggestions very welcome.

Select the theme that you like the best for the dust jacket and cover and general pages.  Then for those pages that would contain your recipes and photos create custom pages like those described in this tutorial: #19 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book.
If you have iWork you can use Pages to create each custom page in landscape mode.  Then follow the tutorial to get it into iPhoto and the book.
You can do the same with image editors that support layers like Photoshop Elements for Mac. However, Pages is more powerful for this type of project.

  • Best tutorial DVD ?

    Hi!
Which tutorial DVD out there is the best
for a hopeless newbie like me ?!?
    T

I'd suggest Tom Wolsky's DVD and book -
Final Cut Express HD Made Easy tutorial DVD
Final Cut Express HD 3.5 Editing Workshop book, which includes a DVD with training, sample projects & clips and a nice comparison between iMovie and FCE (it is NOT the same DVD as his tutorial DVD listed above).
I have Tom's training DVD and copies of previous editions of his book and they are very well done. Best on the market.

  • Good books for JMF 2.1.1?

    Hi all,
I am new to JMF and I am trying to learn the concepts. Can anyone suggest me any good books explaning the JMF concepts? I tried searching the web but could only find books based on JMF1.0, which I am made to understand is not preffered.
    Somebody please help me.
    Thanks,
    Binil

There is a book that covers JMF 2.0 titiled
Java How To program 4th Edition
    by Deitel & Deitel
    Published by Prentice Hall
    ISBN 0-13-034151-7
I haven't read it, but I'm guessing its good from the Amazon.com user reviews. Note that this book covers many java topics which include JMF 2.0, so I'm note sure how much of JMF it covers.
If you want my advice, try reading the programmer's guide and the sample programs on JMF solutions page on the JMF API webpage. These 2 resources are the best tools for learning JMF.
    Best of luck :)
