Best use for an old G5

I have a 2005 G5 PowerMac that is gathering dust. Is it worth selling or should I take out the drives and use for back-ups and recycle the rest? Any ideas?

If you want to sell it, you might get more parting it out than selling it whole, especially if you sell on eBay or some other place where shipping comes into play. Many people are still tinkering with their G5s.

    ChrisJ4203,
Thank you for the help.  Every app on my phone was downloaded using my old I-tunes ID.  I just hope that they will re-download under my new ID because I still can't change it on my phone.  In order to change to the new ID it says I have to sign out from the old ID and change to the new one.  My problem is that I don't remember my password to be able to sign out from my old ID.  Then the phone says it can change my password through e-mail and I  agree but I never get an e-mail at my old address or the new one.

  • Any uses for a old power mac g4

Is there any use for a old powermac g4 since i have a new 2010 imac.  I love the thing so i tried to get some more use out of it by making it into a server but i can't find disc's for it.  So i tryied making it into a ubuntu server but they stop support for them long ago and i'm not to sad about it becuase i don't know much kernal.
I just wanted to know if there is any use of still keeping a old mac around.  Not just for look.

Without Install Discs, sadly it isn't worth much for anything other than threatening to go back to using the G4 if the new iMac gets tempermental!

  • H.264 What is the best use for this? H.264 Pros & Cons?

I wanted to know since I am using DV what if any role can H.264 play in my workflow? What are the intended or best uses for this? What are H.264 pros and cons? Will it produce higher quality than DV?
As always thanks in advance for reading and replying to my post,
    Sebastian

It will not make DV look better, it is a MPEG4 based compression format for material to be delivered over the web. As such, encoding your material to it it is the last step in the editing process.

  • New use for an old G5 iMac?

Does anyone have any suggestions on a use for an old G5 iMac?
We've since upgraded to a new Intel iMacs and MacBook, as well as iPads, etc.  but I'm trying to figure out how to re-purpose this still working if less useful machine?

PowerPC will not live forever, but it still will live for a long time.
Lots of people use PowerPC's for office work.

  • What are best uses for Fireworks?

I've been working with dreamweaver, flash and photoshop for years, but have avoided Fireworks because I could make a nav bar some other way, in flash or just use mouse-overs in Dreamweaver. Now I bought the CS5.5 upgrade and it includes Fireworks which now I am totally unfamiliar with. Could you tell me what I can use Fireworks for to help my small home-based website building business?
    Thank You,
    Ken

Fireworks' workflow is better suited to Web development, than Photoshop or Illustrator. That's what it was designed for.
For example, I will make different layers for different content areas. I might have a layers for the background, the header, the  footer, and any placeholding content text I want to include just to see how it would look. Layers in Fireworks allow you to organize the content of a Fireworks document in ways that I don't think you can do as easily in Photoshop. This makes it easy to concentrate on one area while having the other areas locked or hidden.
Also, with FW, you have a hybrid bitmap and vector graphics program. It can do some of what both Photoshop and Illustrator can do, so you spend less time moving between applications. It's easy to manipulate and composite bitmaps and vectors in FW. (Naturally, you should use the tool that is best suited for a particular task: complex photo editing should be done in Photoshop and complex illustrations created in Illustrator.)
Like LInda, I will mock up my designs in FW. I slice and export my images, then build page templates in DW based on the mockup.

  • Best Tactic For Realigning old Devices to iCloud

Very various reasons, I was reluctant to have my music collection in iTunes. So other than a few random purchases I did not have much on iTunes. I think iCloud solves all my objections and concerns.
Now I would like to get off on the right foot.
My wife and I have separate iTunes accounts and each has an iPad, an iPhone, and various (Windows) desktops and laptops. So all are devices are not registered under the same account. Before we start building our iClouds music libraries, what is the best procedure for getting our devises lined up to share one common library.
For other reasons we would prefer to have separate iTunes accounts. For example we have radically different apps.
    Any suggestions?

That should be fine the scan defer is for if the AP heard traffic I. Those up categories it backs off that 100ms before it goes off channel to scan.

  • Best use for 3 Macs in our home - iMac, MacBook and iPad wiFi 32GB

My wife and I have two Macs.
Wife:  MacBook 1.1 running OS 10.6.8      Use is for Mail, Internet/News, Cards(Solitaire) iPhoto, iTunes, Skype and the MS trio Word/PowerPoint/  etc
Self:   iMac (2006) 21" running Lion 10.7.5  Similar use, also Pages for a newsletter, iMovie and the MS for Mac trio.
We decided that it would be convenient to have an iPad which would be truly portable and which we could BOTH use for at least MAIL, Photos, perhaps Books, all within our own Wifi area at home.  We do not need connections to our portable 'phones.
We are wary of 'Cloud', otherwise have been concerned at the very large number of good folk who need help with pages of 'discussions', a long way from the days of wysiwyg and my original 1985 Mac (512k).
Could someone please give us a 'How to' in simple terms, including how to first remove the odd bits which we have been able to get operating (unlimited Tunes, a small part of 'Contacts', Mail for my wife only, .......  So that we start again from scratch.

  • I have a new Mac with usb 3.0 ports. What type of cable do I use for an old usb 1 printer

I have a new IMac with usb 3 ports. What type of cable do I use for conncting on older usb 1 device?

AFAIK, use the USB 3.0 port to the printer. It should be backward compatible. If not, return the useless computer or get a new printer.

  • Which meta name="viewport" tag best used for Mac/Safari iPhone?

My test page URL using auto generated tag is: http://02ca0d2.netsolhost.com/action_appliance_02/index.html
Received suggestion as a result of posting question on the PVII forum, and included in the response was the suggestion that the DW CS6 automatically generates would be best changed to another, as follows:
    DW CS6 tag:  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
The preferred tag for responsive pages suggested alternative was:
    Suggested alternative:  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width">
Can both be used in some way without conflict, or which one would be best, if indeed there is a preference or desired "best practice" across the broadest spectrum of available devices being in common use?
Again, this seems applicable to iPhones, and Safari, and as I'm Mac/Safari oriented, this opened another door in responsive design of which I am absorbing; or trying to understand.
I did research the following link but remain unable to make a decision at this juncture.
    https://developer.apple.com/library/IOS/documentation/AppleApplications/Reference/SafariWe bContent/UsingtheViewport/UsingtheViewport.html
    Thanks in advance.

The latest update of Dreamweaver CS6 and Dreamweaver CC now use this:

The second version is considered to be preferable, although there's not much to choose between them. The important element is setting width to device-width. Without it, most smartphones will scale the page to fit into a nominal viewport approximately 960px wide.
By the way, there's nothing wrong with working on a specific operating system, but don't become blinkered by your Mac/Safari preference. It's the World Wide Web, not the Mac/Safari Web.

  • Best uses for a Pismo?

    Hi folks,
Been quite a bit since I posted to the PBG3 boards, but as you can see, I've been keeping up with things.
I got a MacBook Pro last month. Very good system, to say the least. Should hold up 3-4 years, maybe more, given the stuff I use it for.
And yet, I still have my old Pismo with the AirPort card and 512 MB RAM. I'm trying to figure out how I can put it to better use, or at the very least, to bring it up to modern stamdards. Tried Fedora Core 5 on it, but the sound driver was a no-go. The machine itself is in outstanding shape, but could use a good cleaning. It's in the process of a security wipe while I figure out what to do.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    Nate

Does the Pismo have Mac OS X or 9? 512MB is plenty of RAM for Mac OS X Panther, which is a good fit for the Pismo's graphics hardware. Unless you are experimenting with or trying to learn Linux, I'd go with Panther.
Since it has Airport, you could use it in the living room as an "extension" to your TV. You can look up TV schedules. If you watch sports, you can look up team/player stats online. Many times, a TV show will flash up a web site link for "extra features," like those that come on DVDs. Speaking of DVDs, if you do not have a DVD player, you can use the video out port to connect the Pismo to your TV and play DVDs.
Also, since your new Mac Book Pro is Intel, you may want to have the Pismo handy to run classic apps. At the same time, it serves as a nice second laptop in case the Mac Book Pro ever goes down for repair. You can use it as a place to hold a backup of your User directory. There is a great program called ChronoSync by Econ Technologies that allows you to synchronize files in any two locations connected by a network connection.

  • Best Strategy for Quantizing Old Audio Recordings

I've got a bunch of old four-track cassette recordings that I'm cleaning up. One of the things I'm trying to do is correct the tape drag. Even though they were recorded at a consistent tempo, the song gets unintentionally faster towards the end due to the nature of the medium.
I'm trying a few things but have hit a wall:
    1. Beat mapping will allow me to get the click track to follow the recording, but it doesn't correct the problem. Once it's beat mapped, is there a way to then adjust everything to a consistent tempo?
    2. I've tried using the new Flex feature in Logic 9. I start by picking an approximate tempo and then push and pull the transients to correct the tape drag. The problem with this is that you need to do it to each track individually and it's impossible to keep them all in sync, as there's no "global" flex command. I suppose one solution is to do it in the mastering stage, using a stereo mixdown. But it would be great in I could do it before that.
    Any other ideas?

I kept a PowerBook G4 6 years before I finally got rid of it because it was starting to give me some problems.  I've had my current iMac almost 3 years now and have no immediate plans to get rid of it.  I've had my Airport Extreme Base Station for 6 years and it still appears to be working OK and doing what I need it to do.
When someone asks me, I always say buy a new computer only when you absolutely need one or must have the abolsute latest computer on the market.
As for selling an old one, others on this forum may have a better handle on it than I do.

  • Finding a New Use for an Old iMac G5

My first ever Mac was an iMac G5 (circa 2006) that gave up the ghost in the form of a logic/mother board that mysteriously died last summer.
I was told by the Apple Store Tech that the board needed to be replaced for a fee of $1100. So I had them pull the hard drive and bought a new iMac.
I would like to know if this old iMac G5 without a hard drive can be repurposed to be used as either a secondary display for my new iMac or as a replacement for the CRT display on my kid's PC?
    Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions!

    Woody,
Thanks for the suggestion.  Sorry I did not see it until today, not very many problems with my existing iMac Intel
Thanks again and I will go into my local authorized Apple repair centre and have them find out if it is the capacitor failure.  If yes, then my daughters get Mac!!

  • Finding which version of OS X should I use for my old MacBook black

I have an old MacBook (black4,1) 2.4 GHz Inter Core 2 Duo; 4GB memory.
I had to format it, so it is currently running on OS X 10.5.8. I would like to upgrade the Operating system to the latest version that fits this specific machine.
At home a new iMac running on OS X 10.9.2, so I would like to at least be able to sync the basics over iCloud.
Any clues on which version of OS X could/should I use?
    Thanks a lot.

It appears you can upgrade to Lion.
