Best Use of one SSD  for cache drives

Hello...  Months ago I added two Physical  Momentus XT drives to be used  as Cache only drives:  One as a Cache disk, and one as a Cache Database disk.  This is the only function these drives do...
Doing this really sped up large session loads...
I'm going to be getting one SSD soon, and was wondering.... Of the Two Caches....  Cache, or Cache Database...
Which would benifit the most from an SSD over a hybrid hard drive??
Seeing that the Controller is a 3Gb/sec controller only....  That's why I used two separate Cache disks..
Now that I'll have the benifit of a SSD speed over a Hybrid Drive (Faster Reads only)... Should I combine both in the SSD or still keep them separate?
Thanks!    Jan

I have replaced 2 Momentus XT drives (One with Media Cache, and other with Cache Database)  with 1 Samsung 840 SSD, which has 2 folders: CS6 Cache, and CS6 Cache Database.
Prior to pulling the drives, I tested the time it took to load a 45 min 1080i AVCHD session that had over 400 scenes, 600 2k JPEG's and about 25 pieces of music.  From clicking on the session to load, until "All Media Loaded" took about 34 seconds (This is with the Cache's on separate Hard drives).  Shut system down, pulled the two drives, added the one SSD drive, power up, formatted the drive and added the above mentioned folders...  Then launched PPRO and pointed the Media Cache and Cache Database at these new locations... Then launched the 45 min session, and walked away while it created the data locations, peek files, etc, to the new SSD Cache Drive folders.
When It was finished, I closed, rebooted the system, Launched PPRO, and timed from the Click on the session, till the end of "All Media Loaded"...     19 seconds...
Will be watching this intently......
EDIT:   SO far, I'm happy with the change.... I am interested in anyone else who has done this sort of thing before.... and in paticular, if you found any negatives of putting both cache's on the same physical drive, even if it is a SSD....
I did find my prior notes, and going from Cache's on raid (Different directory than media, though media was on same raid) to separate Momentus XT Drives decreased load time of this same 45 min project by ~ 15 seconds..
$$$ Available was only enough for one SSD, and I'm not certain if multiple SSD's for cache's would be worth the $$.... Which is pretty much why I posted here....
Looking forward to your comments...

  • Can I use only one computer for driver development?

Hi! I'm newbie in driver development and now is first day when I make the acquaintance of driver development. There is the next phrase in MSDN in
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh706187(v=vs.85).aspx
: "For developing, debugging, and installing a kernel-mode driver, you need two computers". But I unfortunately have only one computer and I have to develop the USB Kernel Mode driver as technical assignment for admission to the job.
My computer is under Windows 7 OS and already has standard USB driver. I have Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate and WDK 8.1 Update on my computer. Can I use only one computer for driver development and debugging or not?

no, not really, you need two. you can use a VM as the machine under test though.

What is best all in one printer for my new MacBook Pro ? Needs to make very high quality photos. Using USB connection.

That's a difficult one but I'd always go for HP as they make so many excellent models that you'll always be able to buy the cartridges from almost anyone.  Theyre darn good printer too.  I have four in the office here and one of them is a very neat flatbed with exceptionally high tonal qualities.  One of their cheaper models is the HP 5520 A4 inkjet all-in-one - CMYK.  Good value at £70 and 4800 x 1200 DPI.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
iTunes and iCloud and different accounts, you will need to delete both accounts from your device before adding the new details in their place.
For iCloud go to settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit the delete button. You can then sign back in using your correct details. For iTunes go to settings >store, tap your account ID and then sign out, you can then sign back in using your correct Apple ID.

Hello i am new to photoshop and would like to really make some fantastic photos and video for my family and friends. I want to add effects to video and Edit photos to the 10th degree. Can someone please recommend an Adobe program. Should i get CS4 extended should i get master suite? Also where can i watch Video Tutorials that start from the basic and lead to the complex. Thanks in advance

What is the best All in One program for picture and video editing?
There is no such thing. If there were, nobody would bother writing different applications. If you are primarily focused on still image editing and video, Adobe Production Premium is the way to go. You can find any number of tutorials just by searching Google and many good ones are linked from the Adobe help systems as well.

  • Best use of 24GB SSD ExpressCard? ln? JFFS2 or YAFFS? MacFUSE/Fuse4X?

Ok, so I just got a 24GB SSD ExpressCard ("Wintec FileMate SolidGO" MLC flash drive;  Max. Sustained Sequential Read: 115 MB/s & Write: 65 MB/s. ) for my MacBook Pro (MB133LL/A).
I'm hesitant to put the whole OS on it, because I've read that many small writes to the disk are slow and hazardous to the life of SSDs.  Also trying to evaluate the pros and cons of having /tmp and/or /var (including /var/vm) on the SSD...  I guess my frequently used apps are the most important thing to have on the SSD.
I would guess that if I set up the appropriate symbolic links using ln(1), the OS, apps, user homes and data will work fine spread out over 2 disks, but perhaps there are some gotchas I'm not aware of, or lessons someone's learned by trying this before me...
Wear leveling helps, and, well the Macs sold with SSDs work... and this SSD comes with a 2 year warranty, so maybe I shouldn't worry...  I think this SSD doesn't have TRIM support,
There are detailed FAQs and product specs on Wintec's site, but at least some of the info is wrong, so I'm here seeking other opinions on how best to use it. For example, I have no trouble sleeping and waking it and do so often; I didn't have to enable hibernate mode.  The specs suggest that booting off the SSD is a good idea, but the troubeshooting/FAQ don't seem to agree with that at all.
What would be fantastic is if I could set up the computer to work like the Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive - in other words, the computer would figure out what files were good candidates for caching on the SSD,  I wasn't able to find any software that does that, but I'm guessing it's something that could be developed using FUSE(Filesystem in Userspace) implementation such as Fuse4X.  It would keep track of accesses and use the SSD for files that were read often, and other optimizations that flash filesystems like JFFS2 and YAFFS have.

I saw someone post somewhere that things had worked fine for them doing this using symbolic links, so I tried that.  It was not a good experience.  Most of the apps would run, but the Dock would treat them as different apps, as would Little Snitch.  I want to have a more stable setup - one that will keep working (after a reboot) if I have to remove the SSD to use another ExpressCard (like for eSATA) or to save battery or because it's failed.
I logged the output of df -h as well as of mount  while a bootable 10.7 Lion DVD was running, which looks like a good method to copy, though I'm not sure what the OS was doing to make it so; IIRC there was no fstab file.  Here are the output logs:

  • Best use of 2 SSDs?

Hi all, I impulse bought a new SSD.  As you do every day.  And now I’m just wondering of the best way to utilise it.  I’ve already got Arch on another SSD so it’s not exactly slow already
Apart from the obvious, moving swap and /home to this new drive, what else do you think would benefit from being moved?
I mainly use Arch for browsing, IRC and programming, so I could obviously have a /scratch partition for GCC and the like, but it seems a bit of a waste of 80Gb haha
    Relevant system specs:
    Quad Core i7
    4Gb RAM
    2 x 80Gb SSDs
3Tb worth of mechanical drives for photos, music etc
Edit: oh and Arch with OpenBox!
    Any ideas welcome.

I don't quite understand why having a RAID array would prevent you from doing a dual bot setup.  I mean, if you are dual booting all Linux, then you could very easily just mdadm the two together and then treat it as one big-ass drive.  You could use it is a big-ass drive as well.  So that means you could put an LVM on top of it and separate it out between your distro choices.  Or you could simply use regular partitions on top of the mdadm array.  Of course this assumes that the disks are of similar size.  But if they are not, you could also just mdadm two same sized partitions together.  In fact, you could use half of each SSD, mdadm them together, then still use the other halves to do with as you please.
I am also not sure what the "temp" is really for.  I mean, unless you are concerned about partition size limiting the ability to compile, then it shouldn't really matter where you put it.  For example, if you wanted to have a small rootfs where you decided to compile gnome, that might not work.  But then you shouldn't be compiling as root anyway, so wherever you do that you should have permissions to run as your user.  Typically that is in your /home folder.
I have a Samsung 840 250GB, as Samsung 830 128GB, and a Mushkin Atlas 128GB mSATA in my Thinkpad.  I have the two Samsungs in a single btrfs pool.  The 840 also hold my ESP (/boot), so it's contribution to the btrfs pool is ~231GB while the 830 spans the whole disk (with btrfs you don't have to use a partition, and though it says it is using the whole disk, it actually leaves a small section in the start of the disk free so you can still have a bios bootloader).  So my data is in "single" mode, meaning that is it just, well... single.  But I have the metadata and system data in raid1.  I wanted to do raid0 or raid1, but the size difference would be too much for btrfs to compensate for.  I guess I could add the Mushkin, but the mSATA port is only SATAII, so teh speed difference is too great.
Anyway, I would recommend btrfs.  It is really cool and feature packed.  Also by using subvolumes, you don't have to really partition your drive all up into chunks.  Subvolumes will also allow you to have multiple distributions in the same btrfs pool, since it allows to to arbitrarily decide what subvol will act as the root.  But if you use multiple distributions in the same pool, you have to make sure you are using very similar kernel and btrfs-progs versions.  But if you are using btrfs, you should be using at least the latest stable kernel anyway, and btrfs-progs' git version is easily built.

  • Should I use a 16gb SSD for my /boot and / partitions?

Should I use a SSD for /boot and / partitions or just not even bother with one so small?
EDIT:  For the sake of another thread.  You think Arch would run just fine on a PIII 733mhz, 128mb RAM computer?  Grandmother gave it to me after she got herself a new one (one I built lol).

Its only a matter of time before prices on SSD drop so I'm gonna wait for bigger to be less expensive.

  • What should you use a second SSD for?

    Hi
I have a few SSD drives and want to maximise the speed my Mac boots up but also in the apps I use.
One of the drives is a Scratch Disk I use for FCPX.  Should I keep my iTunes Library, Apps, Mail and Photos on a separate SSD to my boot
drive to maximise speed opening app and accessing files.
I did think, by doing this would make a clean install or upgrade in the future a much easier process too.
    Thanks in advance

If you don't need to frequently access data in your Home folder, then I would (and I do.) Or you can move folders to a slow drive and put aliases to them on the SSD (this is how I do it.)
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed. When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • How do I program a NI 6602 card to send trigger pulses, one at each output port, triggered by an input trigger signal, using only one counter for each output port?

    Hello,
I have managed to program a NI 6602 card in LabView to send pulses on three different output ports, one pulse on each output port (with individually chosen delays) for each input trigger pulse coming on a separate input port. It is the DAQmx Create Channel (CO-Pulse Generation-Time)-VI that I have used for this, see attached code. However, this VI controls both pulse delay and pulse width, and therefore uses two counters for each output port (although you only specify one counter in the VI input signals), as I understand.
In my application though, I only need to have the delay chosen, the pulse width can be arbitrarily short, and thus I should only need one counter for each output port. How do I accomplish to program this in LabView?

Configure Side Camera Flash 1 Triggering.vi ‏47 KB

Well you're welcome to do that--it will work just fine as long as you are configuring a start trigger.
    <rant>
However, personally I really don't like putting multiple counter outputs in the same task.  I have seen so many people assume that the counter outputs would be synchronized due to having them in the same task when this is not the case (you need to configure a start trigger in order to synchronize the counter outputs even if they are in the same task).  This is the only case I can think of where multiple channels in a DAQmx task are not automatically synchronized.
    As an example:
Running this on my PCIe X Series gives a measured 2 edge separation of 1 ms + {7.78 us - 10.11 us}.  This would likely be much worse on a bus with more latency (e.g. USB).
The resulting output is close enough to what you might expect that it might go unnoticed, but really these counter outputs are not synchronized and it would be easy to glance at the code and not even think twice about it.  For the small amount of extra work on my end to create a separate task for each counter, it really clears up some ambiguity about what the counters are actually doing.  For me it's worth it.
So again, for your case there really isn't a problem with having the counters in the same task since you are using an external start trigger anyway.  I have just gotten in the habit of avoiding doing this.
    </rant>

  • Best use of RAID 0, for O/S or Video Editing data disk ?

    I now have a RAID 0 setup of two 120GB discs (1 x P-ATA & 1 x S-ATA) as well as a S-ATA 160GB and a P-ATA 60GB.
Now what should I use the RAID disc for ?
    My choices are:
P-ATA 60GB for operating system (current)
RAID 0 (220GB) for Video Editing Data
S-ATA 160GB for other data, swap file, My Documents and System Images.
    Or
RAID 0 (220GB) for operating system (current) and swap file
S-ATA 160GB for Video Editing Data
P-ATA 60GB for other data, My Documents and System Images.
    Or
S-ATA 160GB for operating system (current) and swap file
RAID 0 (220GB) for Video Editing Data
P-ATA 60GB for other data, My Documents and System Images.
Which will give me the best performance/balance for Games and Video Editing
Am I likely to hit any problems with using the SATA drive as the operating system drive, I thought I heard somewhere that XP wouldn't allow Drive C to be allocated to a SATA drive ?

If you do video editing, where speed pays, think that you should use Raid for this kind of work.

  • SSD for boot drive

I've installed a Seagate SSHD hybrid SSD / HD unit and installed Mavericks on it.  Things do run fast.  However,
something worries me a bit.  Since a block of SSD can be written only so many time before it reaches the end of its
life, will the system drive have problems with this.  Unix uses some sort of swap disk to allow more to run than there is sufficient
memory for.  This means sections of memory which are dirty (changed from when the program started) get written out to a
swap file so the memory can be used by other programs.  Windows XP did this as well.  I imagine other modern systems do thet
    same.
Will this cause the boot drive to get more writes than it might otherwise have?
Against this, I observe that the Macbook Air uses SSD for its only built-in drive and that the new MacPro uses SSD for its boot drive.
This leads me to think, that OS X does not do enough writing to the boot drive other than user data files to have a significant effect.
Does anyone know more about this?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

All recent SSDs already incorporate wear leveling in their firmware to extend their longevity as much as possible.
SSDs all have a finite write / erase cycle limit and will eventually fail, but it is reasonable to expect their lifespan should equal or exceed that of conventional hard disks. High capacity consumer grade hard disks should be considered wear items that will require eventual replacement. SSDs are no different, the only question being how much longer they will last in typical, average consumer applications. There is no doubt they are more abuse-proof than HDs and are preferable overall despite having a finite lifespan.
For all practical purposes a HD's capacity eventually becomes too limiting for most users, and require replacement for that reason whether or not they fail. SSDs are no different in that regard.
Unix uses some sort of swap disk to allow more to run than there is sufficient memory for.  This means sections of memory which are dirty (changed from when the program started) get written out to a swap file so the memory can be used by other programs.
Macs have been doing that for ages, well before OS X was as much as a sketch on a cocktail napkin. Mavericks uses a new "memory compression" algorithm to minimize use of mass storage swapfiles entirely. It's light years ahead of XP or anything else.
Apple's Fusion Drive intelligently migrates frequently used data to the SSD. Whether Seagate's hybrid drive it is capable of that is unknown.

  • HT201304 oh, my God. Was anything ever so poorly explained as the use of one id for multiple devices? who, where can anyone help sort out the mess that has developed?

I have used my iphone 4s for over a year. Recently, I bought two ipod touch devices, one for each of my children. While attempting to set up their ipods, even with email advice from apple, we have become utterly confused as to whose apple id is on whose phone/ipod, why some apps automatically appear on two devices but not on the third (it varies). Most worryingly, in app purchases is DISABLED on my iphone but my children can still purchase in-app purchases without my knowledge and have run up bills (fortunately not huge bills). Why would anyone want to allow this???? If I have consciously disabled in app purchases under my apple id on my iphone, why would the default on another device be to allow in app purchases, when using my apple id?
When setting up my children's apple ids, I wanted them to have their own apple id to avoid this kind of confusion but we got warnings that they were not allowed to have an apple id (presumably too young?) . But they have got their own ipods and should be able to purchase items using itunes cards so why cant they have an independent apple id? And what's the difference between the apple id and the itunes id?
Is there anyone who can help clear up this mess?

You have to diasable in app purchases on the device itself, NOT the id.
If you want in app purchases disabled on the ipods, then you will have to do this on the ipods themselves.

  • I have an iMac and an HP laptop, can I use my one license for both?

So I asked the other day how many computers one purchase, of the education version, would cover and Adobe told me two. Now I want to know if they will cross platforms. I am looking to ask for a new desktop for Christmas and I want a iMac, but I am worried that I won't be able to get cs5 on that and my pc laptop. So I guess my question is can one license cross platforms, and what computer should I get?
I am partial to the user friendliness of Mac, but all my training and other programs are for pc.
You can see my dilemma. Please help!

Unfortunately no NobleC.  The only way to reduce the cost would be if you purchased a volume license.  But to receive a discount you would need to purchase more than two copies.
If you are not planning on using the Mac primarily for your creative work you could use a Windows virtual machine to run the software.  The performance would not be on par with running it on the Mac natively but should be ok for minor editting and opening documents.  The other option would be using Boot camp to boot into Windows and install our software while running Windows natively via Boot camp.
