Best use of RAID 0, for O/S or Video Editing data disk ?

I now have a RAID 0 setup of two 120GB discs (1 x P-ATA & 1 x S-ATA) as well as a S-ATA 160GB and a P-ATA 60GB.
Now what should I use the RAID disc for ?
My choices are:
P-ATA 60GB for operating system (current)
RAID 0 (220GB) for Video Editing Data
S-ATA 160GB for other data, swap file, My Documents and System Images.
Or
RAID 0 (220GB) for operating system (current) and swap file
S-ATA 160GB for Video Editing Data
P-ATA 60GB for other data, My Documents and System Images.
Or
S-ATA 160GB for operating system (current) and swap file
RAID 0 (220GB) for Video Editing Data
P-ATA 60GB for other data, My Documents and System Images.
Which will give me the best performance/balance for Games and Video Editing
Am I likely to hit any problems with using the SATA drive as the operating system drive, I thought I heard somewhere that XP wouldn't allow Drive C to be allocated to a SATA drive ?

If you do video editing, where speed pays, think that you should use Raid for this kind of work.

For what you are looking at doing I would suggest that you consider a Mac Pro instead.

  • I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Pro

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

  • Can I use an external drive for Time Machine and storing other data?

At the moment I have one external drive, a 500gb LaCie. My internal drive is 160gb. I don't think I'll be using all 500 of those gigabytes for a while, so I want to put them to good use. Can I make a partition on this drive and use that for Time Machine, leaving the rest of the drive for my documents and other files? If so, how would I partition the drive? I'm not fluent in Disk Utility and even though I'm pretty sure I know how to do it, I don't want to screw up. Also, how big a partition would you recommend?
While we're here, I have a second question, somewhat relevant to the first. Could I move my Time Machine backups to a second drive if I wanted to? Also, if I used a big drive (say 1tb) could I use Time Machine to backup my current LaCie to a partition on that drive? Thanks in advance.

    videoCWK wrote:
Does that also mean that I could back them both up on a very big drive?
Yes. Time Machine will, by default, back up all of your external drives unless you specifically exclude them.
Also, will Time Machine backups eat all my space after a lot of usage?
It depends on what you do on your Mac. If you work often with very large files (video editing, heavy photo editing, big disk images, Microsoft Entourage data file, Parallels disk image file, etc) then your backup drive could fill up very quickly.
I use my Mac mostly for e-mail, web browsing, iTunes, iPhoto, and the occasional iMovie project. I have 92 GB on my main hard drive (60 GB of which are my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and one iMovie project.) My Time Machine backups consume 155GB on my backup drive, and that's after using Time Machine for a full year.

  • Using LP8 to compose for film - Sync'ing video & audio

GB allows you to have a "video track" for doing music for video, does LP8 allow this??
Im doing a score for a short film (about 6mins) & i would like to sync up audio with video. Currently i have imported the film into iMovie HD & have broken it up into sections for the scenes. Can i import these scenes into LP8 to sync it with the music?
I do have soundtrack but im needing to use logic to compose the music.
    cheers

Sure in the global tracks you can configure a video track displaying the single frames of your movie if the zoom in is big enough. Just import your movie (the default key command for this is apple+M) - right click on the global track to configure it - tick the box "video" and voila. If you click the little downwards arrow in the video track the pictures get bigger.

  • What Mac should i get for serious Audio recording, Video editing and Graphic's?

Hey im new to Macs and i want to upgrade to one. My question is what one?.. My current system is not powerfull enough to handle what i am doing and i want to upgrade. I plan on using the mac for serious music recording with protools or cubase, video editing and effects with adobe premiere pro and after effects and graphics and web type stuff the rest of the adobe collection.. ex photoshop, dreamweavor, flash, illistrator, etc. So pretty much i need it to handle the adobe cs5.5 master collection and a music recording daw without bogging down. I do serious music recording and video editing and effects that need power behind it and runs smoothly. Any tips, tricks, advise, etc would be greatly appreachated!. Btw im a college student and plan on getting the discount prices in the adobe collection and hopefully the mac and would like to get the best quality computer for the best price!
    Thanks!

Buying refurbs from Apple is a great idea - except for my current iMac, all my Macs have been refurbished. However, I would only get a factory refurb from Apple - they come with the same warranty as new units and you can buy Applecare to extend that to a total of 3 years. And, as far as I know, the Apple online store is the only place where you can get factory refurbs.

  • Short cut for copying a cd or dvd data disk?

Is there a keyboard shortcut for copying a data disk, CD or DVD?
I know I can create a folder, then copy all the data off a CD or DVD into
that folder and effectively get the same thing, but I was wondering if
there was a one keyboard keyboard shortcut.
When you do right click and copy of a data disk, what you get is just
an alias to the disk, not a copy.
    Thanks.

Mount the CD/DVD/disk Image, OPTION-click on the disk icon at the top of the window that opens, and drag to the Desktop or another Finder window. That should create a folder containing everything whatever you mounted.

  • Best Use of one SSD  for cache drives

Hello...  Months ago I added two Physical  Momentus XT drives to be used  as Cache only drives:  One as a Cache disk, and one as a Cache Database disk.  This is the only function these drives do...
Doing this really sped up large session loads...
I'm going to be getting one SSD soon, and was wondering.... Of the Two Caches....  Cache, or Cache Database...
Which would benifit the most from an SSD over a hybrid hard drive??
Seeing that the Controller is a 3Gb/sec controller only....  That's why I used two separate Cache disks..
Now that I'll have the benifit of a SSD speed over a Hybrid Drive (Faster Reads only)... Should I combine both in the SSD or still keep them separate?
    Thanks!    Jan

I have replaced 2 Momentus XT drives (One with Media Cache, and other with Cache Database)  with 1 Samsung 840 SSD, which has 2 folders: CS6 Cache, and CS6 Cache Database.
Prior to pulling the drives, I tested the time it took to load a 45 min 1080i AVCHD session that had over 400 scenes, 600 2k JPEG's and about 25 pieces of music.  From clicking on the session to load, until "All Media Loaded" took about 34 seconds (This is with the Cache's on separate Hard drives).  Shut system down, pulled the two drives, added the one SSD drive, power up, formatted the drive and added the above mentioned folders...  Then launched PPRO and pointed the Media Cache and Cache Database at these new locations... Then launched the 45 min session, and walked away while it created the data locations, peek files, etc, to the new SSD Cache Drive folders.
When It was finished, I closed, rebooted the system, Launched PPRO, and timed from the Click on the session, till the end of "All Media Loaded"...     19 seconds...
    Will be watching this intently......
EDIT:   SO far, I'm happy with the change.... I am interested in anyone else who has done this sort of thing before.... and in paticular, if you found any negatives of putting both cache's on the same physical drive, even if it is a SSD....
I did find my prior notes, and going from Cache's on raid (Different directory than media, though media was on same raid) to separate Momentus XT Drives decreased load time of this same 45 min project by ~ 15 seconds..
$$$ Available was only enough for one SSD, and I'm not certain if multiple SSD's for cache's would be worth the $$.... Which is pretty much why I posted here....
    Looking forward to your comments...

Hello, I plan on setting this new build up with SATA RAID 0. I tried to follow the ReadMe file in the RAID drivers download but think I am not fully understanding. The ReadMe says to copy all files to the media...it said floppy but I am going to use a flash drive. I did so but there were two folders, X64 and  X86. Do I open those two folders and copy all the contents or do I just copy the two folders directly to the drive?
    Thank you

Open the sub-folders and copy their contents, or copy the sub-folders, themselves?
What about BIOS update? Will it be necessary to use a floppy or can a flash drive function?
"What about BIOS update? Will it be necessary to use a floppy or can a flash drive function?"
don't update the BIOS when everythink is working...
"Open the sub-folders and copy their contents, or copy the sub-folders, themselves?"
copy them as is.. directly with sub-folders included.

  • Best export from FCP4.5 for conversion to Flash video player?

    Hi,
I'm prepping a 5 min edit production for the best web presentation w/o excessive file size / loading time. The production has a lot of subtle detail & layered images so there a lot of opportunities for this to turn to mud (shot on low grade digital consumer video camera & also in lower light settings).
I exported in H264 at med quality & got a good looking 75 meg file. Tried uploading to YouTube, fearing the worst, and it actually created something decent from that file. I could just link that embedded file to the intended website, but I dont want that YouTube logo in the corner. I'd rather recreate what they do in Flash w/o the logo.
Does anyone have info on what YouTube does to the videos it processes into those flash video player files? Compression or resolution settings? It looks like going that route will give better results that can be universally viewed than the standard mpeg route. (file size & universal viewing on all platforms are my only reason not to post in H264).
Are these issues best solved going from a big FCP export and handled with settings in Flash? Or is there some export choice in FCP that will give best (size & res) quailty with minimal influence needed from Flash?
I've tried Compressor but havent been able to get any results from it. I just get errors that I dont understand. If thats the solution, I'll dig into that further, but would appreciate any tips / guidance.
    thanks

  • It's the Mac book air good for graphic design and video editing ?

I'm into graphic design for clothing logos etc. and I'm a photographer my question is, is the Mac book air good for these things?

ideally a 15" would be best for same, as referring to the 15" macbook Pro.
For a photographer, which I used to be long ago, either the Air or Pro are close in form factor for travel with only one moving part, and SSD.
The retina display in combination with the 15" would be idea as best choice for photo editing and graphic design.

  • Is there a guide to iMovie 11 for someone who understands video editing in the normal way?

Yesterday, for the very first time, I used iMovie 11.  My son shot a little video on his iPod Touch, and then wanted to play around with the titles and transitions a bit more than the iPod would afford.  So, we did the import via iTunes dance, and opened it on the Mac in iMovie 11.  Here's where the fun ended.
I've done small projects in FCE or FCP before, and iMovie before them.  Since we were using the Mac our kids use, it didn't have FCP on it. It was a great little tool for simple projects.  The last time I used iMovie was iMovie 6.  iMovie 11 feels like a hamfisted disaster by comparison.
The project imported just fine.  But then I was left with a string of clips that I can't put transitions into, add titles to, or anything useful.  No indication of how long the movie would be is visible.  I clicked a number of menus, looked around, and couldn't find anything.  I Googled.  I found an Apple KB article that suggested I can control automatic transitions with the project theme settings.  Oh wait, that menu option is greyed out.
Click some more buttons that have no discernable purpose, and whammo, the project list is replaced by something that looks like a timeline without any notion of time.  Now I can add titles and transitions.  So, I output the movie and finally, we're done.  I sent my son out of the room while I cursed at the seemingly brain dead software.  My wife had a bit of a laugh at that.
So, is there some sort of tutorial for iMovie 11 that's aimed at people who aren't the "ooh, shiny!  video!" type?

  • Using Lightroom 5.5:  I can sort images by edit date, but I cannot find a display of the actual time and date of the edit?

Often when working intensely on a large project which spans over days I forget to mark the start and finish time for each session.  When billing clients for time this can create problems.  I thought the perfect solution to this problem would be to sort catalog by edit time, and then by view the time stamps. I could then find the first and and last edit for a session and quickly translate to session time.  The only problem is I cannot find a place with LT displays this information.

It seems to be an oversight in LR -- the metadata field "lastEditTime" is available to plugins via the Lightroom SDK, but you can't use that field to define a custom tagset for displaying in the right-hand-side Metadata panel.
However, here's a workaround that might work for you:  In the right-hand Metadata panel, select the "EXIF and IPTC" preset, and the field Metadata Date will show the date/time of the last time LR wrote metadata back to the file. In Catalog Settings > Metadata, make sure "Automatically write changes into XMP" is checked.  This will cause LR to write develop settings or metadata changes (keywords, captions, ratings, etc.) back to the file soon after you make the changes ("soon after" is typically less than a minute).

  • Imac 5k for beginner photo and video editing

Hello everyone. I have a question I need help with.
I'm looking at the iMac 5k with the i7, upgraded GPU and 32GB RAM.
I'm not a video or photo editor. I haven't edited anything before. But I would like to start. I plan on using media from a Nikon d7100, Canon 70d and a Gopro 4.
I've read too many reviews and don't know the difference between heavy editing and light. So will the iMac 5k handle my needs?
    Thanks for your time!

Yes. The 5K iMac will be an excellent platform for your purposes.

  • How to export iMovie clips for import to Windows video editing programs?

What export format creates an exact digital copy of mini-dv video which can be recognised and imported by Windows video editors?
I need to give editable copies of DV to Windows users, The lowest common denominator is Windows Movie Maker, which does not recognise .dv files created by copying from the project's Media folder, or Sharing a Movie to DV stream.
I want to burn data DVDs with clips or complete projects from iMovie which are equivalent to copying back to mini-DV tapes.
Is Share to AVI my only option?
If so, is there any loss in quality?
    iMac G5, MacBook, iMac 233 (R.I.P.)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

after spending a few minutes on the net concerning that WindowMovieMaker, my guess is:
    WMM does NOT accept a "file.dv" ...
but is does accept that same dv within an avi container... "file.avi"
avi and mov are just containers, not formats, as a box of chocolate, "wrappers" for many codecs...
try to export your clips as avi, and choose under compressor "DV"...- give that a try...
DV is the same codec which is in use on miniDV tapes, and the same, iM uses internally... so, it should be no quality loss.. just a "wrapping"...
(me no PCuser, just read that...)
