Best way to access my mac G4 files when working on a windows pc laptop

Hi - I'm looking for ideas on the best way to access files stored on my G4 mac, when working on a pc laptop elsewhere in the house.
I'm not sure if this involves setting up a network, or whether I should be looking at ftp or even bluetooth.
Just to explain what I'm after: I'm writing a book, primarily on my g4 (running panther) in my study. But I spend a large proportion of my day running after my rampaging toddler. I'd like to make better use of my time by being able to grab my partner's laptop and write while my toddler is occupied for twenty minutes.
Messing around with a memory stick etc would just take too long as I'd have to remember to update the main file. It would get very messy!
I hope someone can help!
Thanks, Tina

Between the networking question(s) to connect the two different platform
computers, using Sharing and other settings in each, the next question is
about the software used in the documents you are to be creating in one
and sending to the other.
Do you have a similar word processing software for the PC as in the Mac;
or something compatible in creating and using .RTF documents, etc. Or,
if you have a Windows version of AppleWorks, that would work. And the
TextEdit in your OS X can handle rich text format word processing; and
probably open basic text from a PC fairly easy. (And Word, etc, can.)
Issues in sharing, are such that you have to be careful when changing the
settings in your computers, that you don't accidentally share your computer
contents with other persons and computers in the vicinity. By wire would be
the most secure, since Ethernet can be used locally to share.
Internet and wireless may be a possibility, too; or using a local shared external
drives, if visible to both computers, depending on the network setup.
Do you have a USB hard disk drive set up on your wireless network, and
formatted in Fat32 so the Mac and PC can both see and use it? If so, you
may be able to send documents to there from the PC and use them in the
Mac. This may work, and depending on how the files were organized, not
too hard to keep up with the draft copies generated from the PC for use in
the Mac at a later time, and so on. This way, both computers would not
need to be on, to send & receive a file...
{For that matter, using a Google Account could be helpful;
to just email the writing to yourself, at any computer.}
Anyway, there are several possibilities, including those in the link to another
discussion on that topic per the above post.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Best way to access a Mac remotely?

I have a G5 tower at work and a G5 iMac at home, both running Tiger. I would like to access my files at work from my home computer.
What is the best, most efficient, and most cost-effective way of doing that? I don't need to perform major computer maintenance remotely -- just access files and occasionally fonts.
Should I invest in the new Apple Remote Desktop 3 that I've read about, or is there a simpler option built in to Tiger? ARD3 seems a bit more robust than I think I need.
My work computer is on a network with mostly Windows PCs. Don't know if that presents any special challenges...
    Thanks!

In this forum area do a search on "remote access".

    Hi,
if you don't have a binding the I am not sure the binding context is created. Anyway, try
BindingContext.getCurrent().findDataControl("name here as ID in DataBindings.cpx") and see if it returns a valid instance

  • Best ways to view/display PDF/Excel files stored in the Database

What are best ways to display/view PDF/Excel files stored in the Database? thanks L

Thanks tom, sorry let me explain. Currently we have oracle forms screen, using webutil to store/view files into DB. client won't like the interface, they want us to make it more friendly, drag and drop if possible, load multiple files, as possible.. So I am exploring different ways to improve may be java (or jdev/any any other), different screen designs, different features for fileupload/download/view options.

  • What is the best way to export a .csv/.txt file to a MS Windows shared folder via a scheduled job?

What is the best way to export a .csv/.txt file to a MS Windows shared folder, when the export process is a scheduled job?

You can't directly, as scheduled jobs can only export to server-side data stores, which can only write to the landing area. You'll need to use an external script (e.g. batch file) to move the file from the landingarea after export. You can use an external task in the scheduled job to invoke the script.

  • What's the best way to update my Mac with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player?

I've been getting prompts whenever I look at certain websites to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.  I'm skeptical as to responding to those prompts.  What is the best way to update my Mac Pro with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player?

You might also want to consider uninstalling Adobe Flash... I currently don't have it installed and haven't needed to install it.  Most websites are now coded in HTML 5 so that the iOS devices can actually visit them.  I can still watch YouTube videos et al.  About the only thing I can't do is play Flash games... but they're a resource hog anyways.
Try going without for a day or two and see just how many sites you visit no longer require it.  A lot of people keep it installed out of habit, not out of necessity.  If you have Flash installed, visit a site and it's out of date, it will tell you to update your Flash.  What it won't do is tell you is that had Flash not been installed, it would have used the HTML 5 code instead.  Think about it... if an iOS device can't run Flash at all... it can't visit this site if it were written only to use Flash.  What site would eliminate such a huge portion of their market base?  You'd be surprised at how many sites use HTML 5.  Uninstall Flash and see for yourself.

  • What's the best way to master an MPEG 2 file for DVD Studio Pro.

In version 4.5 of FCP I was able to use QuickTime conversion to encode to MPEG2. Now that option is not there. I hate using compressor 2 to create MPEG 2 because when I do the MPEG 2 files always seem to studder and I don't know why. I shot my project in HDV. It is about 64 minutes long. Any suggestions on the BEST way to master an MPEG 2 file for DVD Studio pro? Thanks in advance!
    Peter
    PS - I'm using FCP 5

Some people have reported a field reversal problem with HDV to SD DVD encodes. There's an Apple technical document on this issue somewhere, but the problem was supposed to be addressed by a Pro Applications update a couple of years ago... This site might help you get to the bottom of the problem.

  • Best way to view and edit OpenOffice files on my new iPad Mini (originally Word and Excel files). Thanks!

Can someone tell me the best way to view and edit OpenOffice files on my new iPad Mini (originally Word and Excel files)? Thanks!

wmf files is a MS Windows video file, you will need a tool to covert the wmf files to another file format OS X will read. Simply Google to find a converter you are interested in and use it.

  • Best way to connect my Mac Air to my TV ?

What's the best way to connect my Mac Air to my TV ideally wirelesly so I can have meetings in the room displayed on the TV?
The TV has an HD port.

You're only option at this point in time for a wireless connection to your TV for mirroring your display is a product called McTivia, which runs around $180.
If wireless isn't absolutely necessary and you don't feel like shelling out that much cash, a simply HDMI cable and a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter would do the trick and save you over $100.

  • Can you still access Adobe PDF SAVED FILES WHEN YOU GET A NEW COMPUTER

Can you still access Adobe PDF SAVED FILES WHEN YOU GET A NEW COMPUTER ? Do you loose the files you have saved on you old computer when you get another computer?

I may not be clear on what you are asking here but I'll try an answer anyway since that's the type of guy I am.
If you have PDF files on your old computer, you will need to transfer them to your new computer. You can use a flash drive or CD if needed.
But again, I think I'm not getting what you are really wanting to know. If I'm not, can you give us some more details?

  • Best way to access files at two different locations

    Hey Guys,
I am in need of some help. We currently have about six macs in our prepress department all accsessing 1 mac mini with three external drives that store all our files. We also work out of those drives, not on our local machines.
So far this has worked out well for us. However, in the next few weeks we will be opening a new shop about 20 miles away, that will need access to all these same exact files. We are not sure of what the best way to do this is.
Currently the mac mini we are on does not have osx server just osx. Also we have about 4-5 TB of customer files, and any given file that we are working on or would need access to could be up to 2 GB's.
We are open to all and any ideas. Obviously the cheaper the better, but please give me any and all ideas so that we can evaluate every option and decide what is best for our company.
We know that our current state of using external drives on a mac mini in not a realistic solution for ever as eventually our drives will fill up and I think we are out of usb ports to add new ones on.
Also this cannot be a one time type of fix as once we get this new location set up and established, we plan to replicate it and open up a couple more in the comming years. Also seeing as we already have 4-5 TB of data we need something that is future proof so that as we continue to expand and grow we end up needing a new solution in 5 years.
Thank you for any and all help you can provided.

@rccharles// Do you know of any software that would duplicate or mirror a sever?
I do not have personal experience beyond dropbox.
    sync
SyncTwoFolders simply synchronizes two folders. might be more for client.
    https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22644/synctwofolders/
    Unix rsync
whether it copies mac metadata may depend on what version of X you have.  May depend transfer app you use AFS, NFS, Samba.
    dropbox
Well, if you want with Dropbox, you could use Dropbox to do the syncing. I think this is the way to go because you would get offsite backup. Not sure i'd try to sync the two servers. Duplicate each server to Dropbox.  Provide read-only access to the other site.
You could experiment around with two computers and a dropbox account.  See how it works for you.  It's free upto two gigs.
    versioning
dropbox has versioning build in.  using sometype of version system while necessary was viewed as a PITA by most programmers.  The best system would be an automated on where you didn't have to do anything beyond what you were doing before.  Timemachine, etc.
    dropbox
also would we just talk to our internet provider about a private fiber channel?
I think Linc Davis has the idea.
    Router-to-router VPN.
I was putting the concept out there.

  • Best way to access files on Xserve via VPN on iPad?

Can anyone tell be the best solution for accessing files housed on the companies Apple Xserve remotely via VPN from an iPad? Numbers / Pages etc.
    thanks,
    Rick

The iPad doesn't natively support file systems such as those on servers, but there are third-party apps that can allow this. FileBrowser is one often mentioned, so you might look into that. VPN will be a separate issue; iOS has a built-in VPN client which works with many VPN systems, but you'll need to see if yours is supported.
    Regards.

  • Best way to remove applications and unneeded files

I have an Imac running slow. Duo Core processor. 4 mgs Ram. Disabled Java in Safari. Getting all my photos off the computer. Safari runs slow. Beachball forever. Have removed past Mac Keeper. Want to know the best way (Until I can add more RAM, if I can, to speed up my mac. I have had to purchase Adobe Cloud to replace Photoshop etc and want to remove all files on my computer not needed for Adobe and any other files slowing down my computer. Also, need Safari to be working. I wait for ever for pages to load and to access Gmail. Want to defragment my hard drive as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).
