Best way to back up both and iMac and MacBook Pro

What's the best/simplist solution for routine backing up my 2012 iMac and 2011 MacBook Pro ?
I'd like to be able to sync the Pro with the iMac and then maybe just have to backup the iMac.

The simplest method is to buy Apple's Time Capsule and do Time Machine backups of each computer. Apple explains more in:
www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
For syncing you can use iCloud for syncing some items but not make identical clones of one another. For that you may need a product such as SugarSync.

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original.  Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.

  • What is the best way to back up iPhoto and create disc space

what is the best way to back up iPhoto and then remove the iphoto folder from the mac book and onto the external apple time capsule

    Two different questions
the best qway to backup is to use TimeMachine or other automatic backjup program
However this does not allow you to reduce space since a backup need to be a copy of your existing library and as soond as you changge the library you no longer have a backup and sooner or later the photos will be gone form the bakcujp too
You need to run the iPhoto library on an external drive or had a complete library on and external drive and a smaller library on yoru internal drive using iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to move photos between the two libraries
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Best way to back up folders and still access in LR

My workflow currently is to do all my corrections to my files while they're on my hard drive. Once I'm finished with that job, I copy the files to two external drives and delete it from my hard drive. With Lightroom, it seems that I should still just copy the folder to my external drives, delete from my hard drive, let LR turn that folder name red, and when I want to look through those images again, click on the red name through LR and point it to the new location. Is this the best way?
I'm often going through old job folders, and they're on a variety of drives (I have 6 currently).
What I love about Bridge is that you could export the cache for each folder and not worry about where I move the folders.

Move the folder to the external drive in the Folders pane and then copy it to the other drive. Lightroom will keep track of it during the move. If you don't have the drive in your Folders list, the hit + beside the word Folders and create a new top level folder on the external drive from there (or simply select the drive itself-if you do this make sure you cancel the import or Lightroom will try import the entire drive). Then move the Folder you want to archive to this newly create top level folder.
If the drive is connected they will remain white. If disconnected, they will go red.
I've found it's quicker to quit Lightroom, reconnect the drive and then restart Lightroom, than to allow Lightroom to find the folders again after you connect with Lightroom active. YMMV.

  • What is the best way to back up MAC and of office 2010

I just lost my hardware. Lost all my files from 6 months of heavy work.
I now will start from zero and would like to use the best as possible Back-up solution for my Mac Air.
My question is what is the best tool for it: I cloud? Time Machine?
The point is that I do have most of my files at Office (Powerpoint, Excel and Word for Mac). What is the best solution for office?
    Thx.

It's less a question of the best tool than of how many tools and backups.
Surely, Time Machine is fine for one type of backup. A second backup should be a full clone of your current system. A third backup is an incrementally updating backup for the clone. The fourth is a backup you put in a fireproof safe or in a bank safe deposit box.
Backups should be made on regular schedules. Time Machine updates hourly. One should be a weekly update. The one you store away should be a monthly update.
Choose a final strategy that works best for you and provides adequate security for your data. Remember, you can never have too many backups.

  • Recently my iPad3 and iPhone5 stopped synching automatically to iCloud. Around the same time I backed them both up to my Macbook Pro and installed the iOS6 update. Any thoughts or help is appreciated!

Recently, I noticed that my iPhone5, iPad 3 and iPod Touch 4th Gen stopped backing up to the iCloud automatically despite ALL of them doing so previously, without a single problem. A few weeks ago I bought a Macbook Pro and I backed up all 3 devices to it a couple times (and they still backed up to the iCloud by themselves without a problem). A few days ago, I noticed that ALL 3 OF THEM stopped backing up to the iCloud automatically. Around the same time, I backed them up to my Mac and I also downloaded the iOS6 update. I'm not sure what is wrong. Has anybody else experienced this type of problem? I'm NOT very familiar with MAC computers as this is my first one and I've been learning a lot as I go. I don't know if I did something in the setting's of iTunes when I backed the devices up that could have caused the decives to stop backing up to the iCloud automatically. I did notice on my previous laptop (a Gateway) and on this one (the MacBook Pro) that on each device, I had to go into "Setting's" on each device and turn the "iCloud Backup" back to the  "On" position! That was right after I backed them up to each computer. I attempted to fix it yesterday by adjusting the setting's in iTunes, but nothing worked. If anyone can help, I would sincerely appreciate it. Thank you!!!

Ok, I can try those things this afternoon. I have to leave now and won't be able to try for several hours. I'll let you know how things turn out. Thank you again. Also, I am not sure what DNS Setting's are regarding the router and how to change them. Thank you again for trying to help me with this. One side note. I noticed yesterday on another post regarding this topic, a man said he changed his iCloud email from one to another. I have two. One is and @me.com address and one is an @icloud.com address. I switched them around the other day. One device had @me.com as the one the email one be sent from (I think that was the phone) and I believe the iPad 3 had @iCloud.com as the other. Well, I switched them both to @icloud.com. In the post I mentioned a man said that he did that to his, and it worked. That was a few days ago and this was around the same time I began noticing the devices not synching to iCloud like they should. Right now I have for the iCloud email account (on both the iPhone and the iPad) @iCloud.com as the setting that any emails from that account would be sent from and the @me.com is also turned to the "On" position on both devices. I figured that if I'm sending an email from an iCloud account it should say "@iCloud.com" after it rather than "@me.com" after it. I just did that so everthing was the same on both devices and out of personal preference. No other reason really as I don't ever use the account to email anyone and have never given either address to anyone. Only Apple has them and they sent a couple things initially and I never receive anything on that account (for the most part). Ocasionally I get something from Apple and that's a rarity. I don't know if that may factor in at all or not. It did for one gentleman. Thank you randers4!

  • What is the best way to back up data on an older MacBook?

My MacBook is about 5 years old.  It is still working just find and intend to use it until it crashes.  What is the easiest and most inexpenisve way to back up all of my pictures/music/data so that I don't lose it when that day comes?

Time Machine. It's already included with Leopard.
Buy an external hard disk and plug it in, Time Machine does the rest.
The least expensive option is to find a Windows PC discarded due to viruses and harvest its HD. Purchase an inexpensive USB enclosure, install the HD, format it with Disk Utility. Your total investment is $20 for the enclosure plus a little time.

  • How is the best way to sinc my iPad 2 to my MacBook pro

I have a new MacBook pro. I have transferred my iTunes library to the MB. I would like to sync my iPad 2 to the MB. What is the best way to do this? The MB iTunes library has 2200 songs while the iPad has 1300.
    Thanks

If you start iTunes, then under the iTunes on the menu bar, Preferences, then Devices check the box for prevent iDevices from automatically syncing.  That will keep the iPad from syncing the entire music library, and you can check the music you want it to sync.

DO NOT delete files in your Home Folder -> Library tree as there are things like your iPhone backups, your email messages, your application preferences, etc...
DO NOT delete files outside your home folder, as you may end up deleting something essential to Mac OS X, and turn your Mac into an expensive “Door Stop”.
I will point out that you will find some very large files in private -> var -> vm (these are the Mac OS X virtual memory paging files (swapfiles) and where Mac OS X stores the copy of RAM when your Mac is put to sleep).  The swapfiles get deleted on reboot, and the sleep image is just going to be created again when you put your Mac to sleep.
If you think you have found something to delete outside your home folder, it would be best to ask first before deleting.  There are many examples of people deleting files outside their home folder, or renaming files, or changing the ownership or permissions of files, and then their Mac stops running.  Do not be one of those people.  Ask first.
PS.  Please do not use ALL CAPS for your entire messages.  In the world of text messages, forums, etc... ALL CAPS is shouting, and we haven't done anything that annoying yet

  • What is the best way to back up aperture on imac and then take the library on the road for my mcp?

I have just aquired a lacie triple interface ext drive 1tb, to vault aperture and then take on the road for mcp to access the aperture iamges, looking at some of this forum I dont think this is as easy as i thought so i thought I'd better get some help!
I have not activated the ext hard drive yet just in case, my imac is backed up with time machine presently.

    Hi Dave
I use a MBP  and a Mac Mini when on the road
It has always been my practice not to use the system drive for my photographic data where ever possible always using external drives eSATA and FW for the MBP and using USB drives for Vaults and Clones
I am working with a growing Libary at the moment 720GB + 500 GB of referenced files on a second HDD
I will be scooting down the A30 with a couple of HDDs and my MBP on my way home and whilst there I will be using the my MBP  to add new images to my aperture Libary and Referenced Drive and work on some of my existing files
For the last four years I have used a Ruggedised 500GB FW/USB drive to store copies of my CF cards when on a shoot you need the MBP to transfer from CF to HDD but once on the HD any future transfer is quick.
Only reusing it when I have the contents in at least two external HDD's at different locations
I have a Mac Pro and Wiebetech 4bay eSATA external at my studio (It takes bare drives)
Two years ago I did move to using an eSATA EspressCard|34 with my MBP (which only has a 200GB internal) which has ineffect given me a  2TB external running as if it's an internal drive (Ruggedised eSATA) as my Aperture Library and PS scratch file drive.
And 2TB USB drives as Vault backup
I have never been a Time Machine fan from the early days when there were problems when running Aperture, I'm sure it's improved but I have my own work flow routine
I use SuperDuper form Shirt Pocket
I recently purchased a couple of 2TB WD Green 2TB SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache Power Saving Internal Hard Drives
for £60 each and two empty Lacie cases for £18 each from Amazon so storage has never been cheaper I normally use bare drives but the cases are better when I am away from base and its easy to remove them
    Hope this helps

  • Best way to back up mac and external drive to time machine?

My LaCie external Time Machine drive crashed on me somehow and I had to repartition it. I have a second back up (different external drive) through CCC so Im not worried about data loss, but for the life of me, I cant remember how I had time machine configured to back up. I have a second separate external drive that contains my iphoto, imovie and itunes libraries on it. I think I had time machine set up to back that drive up along with my mac separtely somehow, but after thinking about it, isnt that a little redundant. Am I not backing up my iphoto/imovie/itunes external drive through my mac back up? Seems like before I could go into time machine and open that drive from there. If so, is there any reason to back up the iphoto drive separately along with my mac back on time machine, or is that even possible? Would it be easier to restore the iphoto hard drive if it were backup up separately, not as a part of my mac backup? I have had my CCC back up (a second external back up drive) set up to back up the mac and the pic/video/itunes drive separately.

If you open TimeMachine's preferences and click on the Options button you'll see that it works with a simple exclusion rule. It assumes it should back up everything on every drive connected to it except for those files, folders, and drives you exclude.
Like you, I have a separate external drive for media. After playing around with TimeMachine way back when I realized that each time I edited the meta data for music the song or movie got backed up again. I also discovered that at that time TM didn't play nice with iPhoto's library. Given these issues I decided to exclude my media hard drive from TimeMachine and back it up using ChronoSync (on an automatic schedule) once a week.
After some thought I decided I didn't want a simple clone because if a song or movie became corrupt I didn't want to overwrite a good song with a corrupt version. ChronoSync does archiving. When doing a backup if it finds a file has been changed it archives the old one and overwrites with the new one. I look at the logs each week to see if any archiving took place. If I didn't do any editing that week there shouldn't be.
BTW - being a belt and suspenders kind of tech, I have multiple backup drives so one TM drive and one media drive is always off site. A backup is no good if the thief steals it.

  • What is the best way to extract all my information from my macbook pro?

i wanna extract all my info, put it into an external hard drive and erase it from my mac.

If you plan on buying a apple laptop you have two options. You can use time machine or pull the data off of it directly and put it onto the external. I advise the second choice. This way you do not have stuff that you dont need filling up the space on your new drive. Get your applications, music, documents, photos, videos and perhaps downloads and desktop; Put all of these on your external. And then reinstall osx onto your drive.
*** If buying a windows machine next check the format of the drive in disk utility. You will need a program called Paragon NTFS to format the drive window compatibility. You have to pay for the free version but can download a trail version for free.

  • What is the best way or method (s) to clean up my MacBook Pro? Do you recommend any 3rd party applications such as "Cocktail" to do it for me?

I am looking at clearing cache, speeding things, clearing out junk etc

Please don't use any third party app to cleanup a Mac.
OS X takes care of that itself.
