Best Way to Backup Data

Hi,
I wanted opinions from all you pros. I have had 4 hard drive failures in 4 weeks for various reasons but I now understand the necessity to backup.
I have been simply dragging and dropping files from one fw drive to the other. Is this the best method or should I be doing it another way or using a special software?
Someone told me it is not good to grab a bunch of files and drag them over at once. Is this true?
Also, what is the best way to clone/backup my main drive with operating system?
G5 Quad Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2 Hitachi 500GB Drives and 4 external fw seagates
G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 Hitachi 500GB Drives and 4 external fw seagates

The best thing to do is Erase w/Zero each drive one time before loading it up with data, this substancially cuts down on bad sectors corrupting your files.
There might be some truth to grabbing too many files/folder and copying them, I've experienced problems where files were not copied deep in sub-folders.
It's best to clone a whole drive to avoid anything secretly installed by copy protected programs.
Choice of cloning/backup software: DejaVu, Superduper, Retrospect and Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware).

  • Best way to backup 30gb library to disk

    Hey guys,
What is the best way to backup a 30gb library to disc? I'd like to burn my library to dvd's and store away from my house. Wasn't sure if you just create an album and burn to disc or what?
    Thanks in advance!

As Patrick says I'm backing up the iPhoto Library in my Pictures Folder. This contains everything: Photos, albums, keywords, events etc.
The most simple way to do it is to simply drag the Library icon to the external HD. Let it copy over. However this can be tedious when you back up regularly, so I use a back up utility that does incremental back ups: That is the first time, it copies the entire library, thereafter it simply keeps the back up up-to-date with the Library. I use DejaVu for that. Chronosync is another app that will do it. There are many others. Search on MacUpdate.
FWIW my full back up schedule runs like this:
My Library lives on my iMac.
It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected. For this job I use DejaVu because it makes a simple back up that is clear and can be tested easily without doing an full restore.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. Personally I use SmugMug but there are many options including flickr. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size, or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you will need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a restore.

  • Best way to backup Iphoto and Itunes?

I just purchased a 2TB Timecapsule and after reading addtional reviews I am reconsidering my purchase. What is the best way to backup iphotos and itunes? The idea of backing up the data wirelessly and seamlessly with time machine was a what encouraged me to purchase Apples solution. However I am seeing alot of TC's are dying after their warranty expires which is a deal breaker as I have a newborn and do not want to lose pictures.
My 2009 MBP memory is nearly full and my photos eat memory. I would like a solution that allows me to access previous photos etc without relying on the MBP HD in the event it is stolen, crashes etc.
The same holds true for itunes which I rarely use now that I have Spotify, however I do not want to lose my itunes catelog in two years either, but it would be great to have them off my MBP HD, but readily accessible if necessary.
The literature on purchasing cloud storage is pretty scarce (Icloud!?, Amazon?)
Any insight is greatly appreciated, and I am sure I will have followup questions as I need to resolve this soon now that I have a 2 week window to return the TC.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Presumably, the old iMac is pre-Firewire? If it is, it really would be very slow for backing up. You can use these methods to network the two machines on my FAQ:

  • Wich is best way to backup iPhoto library?

    Hi everyone...
i want to know wich is the best way to backup all iPhoto library...
should I just copy everything that is in "iPhoto Library" folder to my extern hard drive? will i have any kind of problem if i want to restore my data?
    thanks

    sauble
A friend suggested I backup all the photos I already have in iPhoto before I start playing around any more
    Good advice
Do I use a disc instead and burn them?
If you don't have a HD, this is the next option.
If I do that, are the photos still accessible if I want to use them again?
Yes. Depending on how you burn them: If you select all of them and go File -> Export and the burn them from the Finder, your pics will be backed up, but you will have to reimport them to iPhoto on restore.
If you use the Share->Burn feature within iPhoto it will preserve te he iPhoto library structure.

  • Best way to backup 2nd Drive [Bootcamp/VMware/Win7] to Time Capsule

I have a mac pro with 2 drives - main drive 1 running os x 10.6.8 and drive 2 boot camp partitioned vmware fusion 3.1.3 running windows 7 - what is the best way to backup drive 2 to my time capsule?
Sorry if this has been answered many times, but I have looked quite a bit.
From what I can tell, it's best to shut vmware down and manually back-up to time capsule.
    Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!

You don't need to do it that often.. once a quarter or twice a year is probably enough unless you are really using the drive alot.. remember you still have to have a full backup from inside windows anyway.. before the incremental can work..
You can indeed store the backup on the TC.. mixing data .. as far as TC is concerned it is just a file.. and TM backups can have consequences.. you might want to create a disk image to separate them.
    http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
As long as you have lots of space it is probably not a big issue or use USB drive.
Whatever you do create a directory for the clone backup..
Create the clone.. and then from inside windows use a suitable backup.. I use macrium reflect .. free version does a full disk image.. but remember this is inside a vm so I am not sure you can restore whole disk from it..
Paid version does incremental but there are loads of backup software you can find.
That can also backup to the TC.. watch your total disk usage and maybe consider using a USB drive.

  • What could be the best way to Export data from 11.5.8 instance to 12.1.2?

    Hi All
What could be the best way to Export data from 11.5.8 instance to 12.1.2?
    Release: 11.5.8
OS: Oracle Solaris on SPARC (32-bit) verison 9
    DB: 9.2.0.1
    Thanks in advance

What kind of data you are looking to move?
Database export/import is only supported for full database export/import and the application release should be the same on the source/target nodes.
You can move the setup using iSetup or FNDLOAD.
    Thanks,

  • Best way to backup Windows Formatted Ipod to convert to Mac OS X?

    Hi,
My wife has a 3rd gen iPod nano which was formatted using a Windows machine which is no longer available. I now have a linux desktop and my macbook. We would like to convert her iPod for use with the my macbook, but the only way seems to be reformatting the ipod and losing all her music.
So my question is what is the best way to backup the iPod without being able to use iTunes (it won't recognize her iPod on my macbook since it is windows formatted and there is no iTunes version for Linux)? I can mount the Ipod as a disk on my Linux machine, would it work to just to copy the entire filesystem on the iPod to some temp directory on my desktop, reformat the iPod on my macbook, then remount the iPod and copy the files back to over to the iPod?

The MacBook can read the Windows formatted iPod just fine, so you can use the above suggestions to get the stuff onto the Mac's library. After that you can either leave the Nano Windows formatted and use it as is, or restore it on the Mac so it is in Mac format.

  • Best ways to view data, total records of an application table ie VBAK

    Hi all,
What is the best way to view data of an application table in the source system?
I know about SE16....but are there other ways to know details ie the total no of records and different field information about a
application table ie VBAK in source R3?
Also, using SE16 when i checked for VBAK and clicked on the "number of enteries" then it showed 0...however
when i directly checked from the sqlplus then i found about 5000 records in there in VBAK. I am not sure why
via SE16 it showed 0. Does anybody have any idea what i missed here?
Thanks...will give points for ur input.
    ak

I tried "number of enteried" on se16 and it shows 0 enteries without any selection criterion...i cheked by putting relevant time range as well but it shows 0...
As i told that when i checked VBAK separately via logging to database directly then i did find 5678 rows there.
Please note that this is a new demo version....so i thought that i first need to activate the table which i did using tcode SE11. Now the VBAK table is active but still via SE16 shows 0 nuber of enteris....
    Can anybody please advise here..
    Thx

  • What is the best way to backup ZFS filesystem on solaris 10?

Normally on Linux environment, I'd use mondorescue to create image (full & incremental) so it can be easily restored (full or file/folders) to a new similar server environment for restore purposes in case of disaster.
I'd like to know the best way to backup a ZFS filesystem to a SAN storage and to restore it from there with minimal downtime. Preferrably with tools already available on Solaris 10.

  • What is the best way to backup a 1 Terabyte external USB drive?

In order to keep my MacBook Air running speedily along and to free up space, I use this strategy to store my iTunes Library on an external USB drive.
I'm trying to think of the best way to backup a 1 Terabyte external USB drive. I'm told the hardware has a product life of about five years and some say to burn DVD-R discs of it as a backup, but that would require many discs.
Has anyone explored the viability of using FTP in conjunction with AWS (Amazon Web Services) to backup the iTunes Library to the cloud? Their file storage is quite cheap.
Any thoughts on the most effective way to backup an external USB drive?
    Thanks!

For a simple clone use Disk Utility's Restore option:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Others will suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.
