Best Way to Buy an iPad Gift for Somebody in Foreign Country (UK)

Hi there,
I'm in Canada and want to buy an iPad for somebody in London, England.
What's the best way to do that?
I went to the Apple UK website, put the iPad in my shopping cart, and went to check out. Then I found out they have a security setting that won't let you buy anything unless you're from the UK/Europe/USA.
Do I have to buy one from an Apple Canada store online and mail it? If so are there any configuration differences for the UK that would prevent it from working even if I got it working here?
I'd prefer to buy it from the UK where they have free shipping direct and guaranteed compatibility. I haven't found any UK stores besides the Apple site that sell them.

Thanks. I was concerned about ordering from a potentially "difficult" UK firm. I once got a laptop from a US company and dealing with it was a lost cause.
I was wondering about ordering from the Regent Street Apple Store in London, which isn't far from the intended recipient.
But my credit card company might not let it go through even if the store accepts it, because of security restrictions.
To the person who suggested buying here and sending there, are there no compatibility issues?

So I bought my 3yr old an iPad Mini since he already knows how to fully operate most things on my iPhone! Now when I go to set it up, I don't want my music and apps and other content popping up on his iPad. Now can I create an Apple ID for him but set it up to where I can still have control over it? Seriously, though "screen glare will cause eye strain" is often taken as an article of faith, there's not a lot of good scientific evidence for it. "Eye strain" can be caused by concentrating on any close work for long periods of time. Looking up and focusing on something distant periodically is very helpful. Older CRT screens that flicker also can be aggravting. I'm not denying that some people find reading backlit screens uncomfortable. However, it's not dangerous. And, then, there are other people who find the higher contrast a backlit screen affords to be much less wearying over long periods of time.

every connection is a bit different. Generally, connect to the wifi, then you may need to open Safari, and may even need to try to get to one of your bookmarked pages to trigger the 'agree to our terms' page to come up.
As to it kicking you off every so often, there are sometimes glitches with the wifi on iPads, you can also be subject to any programming the hotel has. Like I've noticed various places that only allow you to log on for a period of time before having to relogin.
most hotels have 1-800 numbers, so you can always try calling that to see if their tech support has any tips for the frequent disconnection issue.

I am going to purchase my first macbook pro next week. I am switching from Windows to Apple after 10 plus years of use. I am very excited to make the switch. My question is this, I was wondering what is the best way to buy one at an apple store? Should I schedule a one on one to make sure i get a rep? The reason I say this is because the store i go to is constantly busy and seems as though i probably wouldnt be able to get a sales rep for a while. Also i was wondering if this is something people use alot or does scheduling a one on one not happen very often. The last question I have is should i call ahead to the store to see if they have the macbook that i want in stock? If they dont can i order one over the phone and schedule a pickup at the store? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It never hurts to get a rep, as they may be able to show you things about the machine you may not have known, and if they are well trained, they can answer all your questions and make you feel more comfortable about your purchase.
For custom configurations that are not listed in the store online by default, you will likely need to go online, though some stores have a fully featured configuration with the maximum custom addons all prebundled. For more customization online is better.
Ordering over the phone to the brick and morter store is not as likely to be doable, though some stores may offer it. Each store has their own policy, and I suggest calling them ahead to find out what it is.
You can at least for http://www.apple.com/retail/ set a genius bar appointment ahead of time, to discuss your needs.

Buying more hard drive space is a very valid option, here. Editing takes up lots of room, you should never discount the idea of adding more when you need it.
Another possibility is exporting to MXF OP1a using the AVC-I codec. It's not lossless, but it is Master quality. Plus the file size is a LOT smaller, so it may suit your needs.

Keeping it plugged in "all the time" (or, as much as possible - since it is a portable object) slows down the process of getting to that "lessening of battery capacity". It's simply all about "charge cycles" - which then translates into "reduced battery capacity".

Verizon uses CDMA.
The rest of the world uses GSM.
The wifi will work, if you find a hotspot.
The 3G will not, unless south Korea moves to Europe.

Well there is a cost too in not being able to find all your images in a single step, and inconsistencies soon develop - eg a keyword is plural in one catalogue, singular in another. Speed or stability issues are not simply related to catalogue size, and I've seen decently-performing catalogues 50% bigger than yours (as well as slow ones of a few hundred images). Have you optimized the catalogue recently?
But if you think it's a good idea to fragment control of your picture collection.... Presets will be carried over to a new catalogue as they belong to the machine (unless you have the save with catalogue preference turned on). Keywords can be moved via the Metadata > Export and Import Keywords command. If you have lots of collections and smart collections, then maybe make a copy of your existing catalogue and then remove all the items from it - making sure you don't trash them of course.

sources will vary. So this is an open question. An independent
authorized Apple trained repair specialist or service facilitiy may
be able to get the part(s) and do the service. That is an old MB
and a regular Apple Store may be able to diagnose or estimate
a repair cost; but it also could be too old for that route to repair.
A best place to buy a part could be anywhere one is for sale;
there are several online and some ship almost world-wide.
If you are in north America, there are some who also may ship
to other areas, but then there is shipping, taxes, duty fees, etc.
You may be able to narrow down the part numbers and such
by looking into online parts resellers, an example may be
powerbookmedic.com, powermax.com, wegenermedia, etc.
There may be a part number reference in iFixit.com guides.
A service part such as main original hardware is more difficult
than a replacement hard disk drive or optical drive. Availability
varies, so without knowing where you are, I can't speculate as
to that, or any price structure. Authorized repair centers may
be found in the main online Apple links for service centers.

Hand washing works well, but can be tedious.
If you decide to machine wash, make sure of a few things:
- Use warm water
- Do not wash with towels or undergarments. The microfiber cloth will pick up every bit of lint from them.
- Wash it with similar color items.
- Use regular soap, but don't use bleach or fabric softener. The bleach can damage the cloth (and the Apple cloth is black anyway, do you really want a spotted cloth?) and the fabric softener will reduce the effectiveness of the cloth.
- Hang it up to dry or dry it on the lowest setting of your dryer. I am not certain about the Apple cleaning clothes, but other microfiber clothes have been known to actually melt in the dryer if it gets too hot.
To hand wash:
- Put the cloth in a bowl with a tight fitting lid, add a little soap. Either dish soap or laundry soap will work, you don't need much.
- Close the lid tight & then shake the bowl hard for a few minutes. Find a 3 year old, they'll love to help do this.
- Remove the cloth & rinse it well, making sure the water runs clear.
- Air dry flat or throw it in the dryer at a low setting.
