Best way to clone an existing drive, then clone back to a dual SSD Raid 0 setup?

Have a Mac Pro 5,1 (mid 2012) and want to install 2 SSD drives in a Raid 0.
Will attempt to use the Apple Disk Utility to set up the raid. any suggestions on this first part will be welcome!
But what is the best way to clone the existing SATA drive onto the Raid setup?
The 2 SSD are Samsung 84 Pro 256 GB units, installed on a Temp SSD Pro 6 Gb SATA PCIe card.
The OS is Mavericks 9.1.
Thanks !

Always no matter what, have a clone or three - clean, working image, last version before OS X 1.2.3 that you are about to install.
It is about INSTALLING OS X, not updating once you have it - though updates and security updates are known to be monkey wrenches too at times.
Never remove safety net, no matter how safe it seems.
Use a clone to run DU and repair the drive, the drive partition, it handles both (partition integrity was new to Lion), AND to invoke TRIM command when repairing (which won't happen in recovery partition mode of DU).
CCC does a smart update. You don't worry about applying updates to those, and in fact wait a few days before applying updates sometimes, or just make sure the clone is up to date so you can boot from and do a restore if needed. A system restore image is only as good as knowing it will work in an emergency should one arise.
Like to see people break ground on new projects and how to get more out of their systems.  The 5,1 does not have the  limitations or issues that even the 4,1 exhibited let alone even more for the Early '08 3,1s.
One good SSD alone should / would / make more improvement in performance for low investment than any I have seen.   If you have the Tempo Pro card and 2 x 250GB 840's that is about $600 investment   - throw in another system SSD and use the Tempo for scratch and/or Aperture and insure you have "more than enough" RAM and your workflow should be smooth.  Even wtih that, which I call "best practices" the nMP 6.1 makes Aperture etc even smoother as everything is optimized better and the 1200MB/sec SSD and 4-channel 1866 DDR3  makes  graphics smoother and respond instantly to your touch (sports car handling vs your sedan?)
After doing a lot of installs, upgrades, Migration Assistant; and then on a 2-4 week basis boot from another volume to run DU Repair.
OS X alone without the cache used and other things on the boot drive really only takes 40-160GB and makes it easy to create a DU sparse disk image for CCC to update and restore from and that can be kept anywhere. And have a small 200GB emergency maintenance boot volume that you can add to and create on any volume you have handy, shrink and add to that 2TB media drive or  TimeMachine drive volume.
I would just set aside half an hour weekly or as needed to clone your system. Than clone again before you apply anything, system update or update to applications or new applications.
With all your personal data and media and projects not on the system you don't need a RAID0 array to hold as much data, no need for the added complexity or using two SSD devices, easier to maintain and restore. There is even a small added overhead to  any  RAID. With an 840 EVO 500GB just above $300 it makes a lot of sense to use those, and almost too big for a system  drive. Fine if the system drive is not just OS and applications but media and stuff don't need to be there. Again, Aperture/Lightroom and other uses, yes and with t he new Mac Pro  people are putting and using it for multiple purposes and uses that they would not have wtih the 2012 5,1 and earlier. But it is so fast it makes sense - and Thunderbolt 2 external storage has added more costs to storage.
Kind of got long winded, hope it proves helpful. And not confusing but may raise more questions and ideas.

If both have Firewire ports then you can accomplish your goal by using Target Disk Mode. If this is not possible then you can do using an external drive or if you have a local network connect both to your network and use filesharing between the two computers.

  • Best way to use an external drive

    Hello all,
    I have several photos.
I also have three computers that I regularly use: my Windows PC, my Macbook Pro, and a very new iMac.
Rather than place all my photos on each computer... I thought I could place them on a Western Digital Passport portable ext. drive. Then somehow use the drive from computer to computer to edit/play with my photos.
How do I best use iPhoto 08 to do that? I'm not sure... do the photos have to be on the computer in order to make albums, libraries, folders, etc? Or are those things more of thumbnails that POINT to certain files?
Please help a newbie understand the best way to use his external drive.
Thanks for any and all help!

    Hello, and welcome, Theodore!
I must first say that I don't yet have iPhoto 8.
I do, however, have a lot of experience with external drives (I have two). I have a huge amount of music in iTunes, so I keep a copy of it on each external drive. Then, when I need to access my music , I turn on either external drive, up comes the External Drive symbol on my display, then I go over to my dock, and select iTunes. I must remember to first open up the External Drive BEFORE I open iTunes (or iPhoto). I then add or subtract music (or photos), edit, and work on my collection. When I'm finished, I just close the application, then select the Hard Drive symbol, and choose File/ Exit Hard Drive. Reach over and turn off my Hard Drive, and it's all good. I just always remember to open the Hard Drive FIRST, before opening the application.
The same would work for iPhoto. If you place iPhoto onto your external drive, you could probably use any of your computers to connect to it. I would suggest you think about backing up your external drive's contents with either another external drive (which was my choice), or other alternate storage methods.
I only have one PowerBook, not multiple computers, but, other than that, the situation's the same. You want to keep your iPhoto collection off your computers, and onto one external drive. I hope this information can be of some help to you.
    All best wishes... Cea

  • Best way to upgrade to new drive?

What is the best way to upgrade the hard drive on a Macbook? I mean to ask, what is the best way to transfer the complete system onto a new hard drive?
    Thanks!
    Captain!

    # Buy the desired new 2.5" drive. If buying a 500GB unit, the Samsung SpinPoint fits inside, the Hitachi doesn't, the Fujitsu is too slow.
    # Buy an external Firewire case for the drive. Install the new drive in it (this is temporary).
    # Power up and plug in the new drive to the Mac. Make sure the system sees the new drive.
    # Using Disk Utility, reformat the drive to a single partition, using a GUID partition scheme and in HFS+ format. Most new drives come in FAT32 or NTFS format. Search in the forums how to get rid of the NTFS format.
    # Using SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner or even plain old Disk Utility, clone your startup volume (internal drive) onto the external.
    # Reboot and start up from the external (press Option before startup sound). Verify that everything works.
    # Shut everything down, take new drive out of case, exchange with internal drive. Do it yourself or pay qualified technician to do so. Old style MacBooks are relatively easy, MacBook Pro's are more complex, Oct'08 portables are a piece of cake.
    # Start portable, verify everything works. If so, put old drive in external case and use as a backup device. Else put it back in so you'll have a working computer while you figure out what went wrong.
    # Enjoy...
Note: Since the Nov'07 release of the Mac portables, they have the Apple Hardware Test available as a hidden partition in the HDD, meaning that you can test your Mac without requiring the original Install Disk #1. If you change the internal HDD, you will lose that functionality, since no one has figured out how to copy the thing over to the new drive. This means you will need your Install Disk #1 to test your hardware from that point on.

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.

  • Best way to reformat/erase hard drive

    Situation:
2007 iMac intel core duo was running Leopard
Last BU was Nov 30, 2011 on external Time Machine
Also have Carbonite BU..  last one dated April 2011 ( bought it, but turned it off because it seemed like overkill, especially when one of them was slowing      down bandwidth - or so I thought.)
Upgraded to Snow Leopard   Dec 1, 2011
started freezing every 15 - 20 minutes (mouse worked, computer unresponsive)  Hard resets necessary to restart
Unplugged BU drive, Scanner and laser printer
Backed up to external hard drive.  I didn't know I should have partitioned my external hd...  so I don't know if it's all scrambled.
Bought Disk Warrior - it fixed several permissions, did repairs and all ok there..
    Freezing started again next day...
partitioned hard drive into 2 parts - defunct Snow leopard has the majority of space (thought this freezing would have been be resolved by now)
reinstalled Tiger to Leopard since Leopard was a CPU drop in CD on Partition#2   Only gave it a little room
waiting on patch for snow leopard or some answers....  can't wait any longer
There isn't enough free space on Leopard (#2) to add what I need to add to get up and going
wanting to erase both partitions and start fresh.
I also have a MacB Pro that I can put files on.. but here is my dilema..  The Carbonite files are old, but in tact. The external HD (Maxtor 750) MIGHT be scrambled because I didn't know to partition it.
All I ever wanted to do was have my calendar and my contacts sync...  This has cost me a fortune in time..
    2 mac computers  (iMac, MBP)
    2 ipad 2s
    2 iphone 4s
    iMad
What is the best way to reformat the HD?
    What would you do?
Do you think the external BU drive is one big mess with SL and Leopard both on there?  I unplugged it from all computers so it didn't mess anything up..
At this point, I am so frustrated I don't care if I ever get any files back on the imac..  I do need to see if I can save my years and years of my business Quickbook files from the snow leopard side...if not.  Good lesson learned.  (Actually BAD lesson..)
    thank you,
    Helen

I would back-up everything on another external HD with a full version of SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. I personally prefer SuperDuper!. I have several complete backups done on more than one external HD. These days Extra HD prices are quite cheap compared to loosing all your material and time. Then, if you really want to start fresh, Disk Utility works fine for me every time. I do go into the Options and zero out the drive completely. However, before "wiping out" your drive, I assume that you are fully upgraded in Leopard including all firmware and security updates. I actually go read about any update before I install it to make sure I really need it.
Over the year I only had one internal HD fail on me but I backed up everything beforehand and my other ones are also backed up. In my opinion there is no such thing as overkill since my time and documents are precious. In the past I made one big mistake not backing up anything and lost between 3 and 5 years of stuff. It will not happen again. Back-up, back-up and back-up.
I'm currently runing Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion on different drives for different uses and different Macs. Tiger has always seemed to be the most stable for now but I'm slowly adjusting to Snow Leopard and Lion will most likely follow.
I'm not sure how to solve you "sync" issue since I'm in the process of trying to figure out the same thing trying to backup all content from Entourage 2008 within an old G4 PPC.
Anyway, there must be a solution somewhere online for you and I hope you find it. It may help me too! ;-)

  • Best way to backup LaCie USB drive

I have Time Machine for my main computer, but I want to backup my LaCie USB external drive to DVD. What's the best way to do this? Is there a backup command that can accomplish this? Will 'tar' be able to handle this? Are there other Mac programs that handle this?

    Hi auratio;
Well since a DVD will only hold 4.7 GB and the smallest LaCie drive is over 300 GB it is going to take a huge number of DVDs to back it up. Assuming the drive is not full, it could still easily take over 10 DVDs to back up the drive. Personally I see this solution of backup to be more of problem then a valid solution. My suggestion is to get another hard drive specifically for backup.

  • Best way to import from external drive that I'm loading LPs on

I'm transferring many LP's to an external hard drive as MP3 in a LP folder.
#1 - What's the best way to import into iTunes and still keep my original file where it is as well as have a copy in iTunes? Would I just import each song individually or could I add folder? I do have the setting checked for copying song to itunes. Just not sure if I should import or add?
#2 - Is there a way to import into iTunes as AAC or do I have to import original MP3 and then convert to AAC? When I do this and try to delete the MPEG-3 songs from iTunes.. I'm somehow also deleting my original MP3 file that's in the LP folder. I believe this pertains to what I'm doing in question #1

    None of the above.
There's no importing involved. All you do is open the v6 Library with 09. It will then update the Library, preserving all your work. As always, back up first.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • What is the best way to wipe my hard drive for a clean install?

I've been having a lot of insane issues with my iMac like my Dock icons not staying, email messages showing in Mail but when I click on them I can't see any text, Spotlight finding emails and files that don't show on my hard drive, etc.
I've decided that I just want to wipe the whole thing clean and start from scratch. What is the best way that I can do this to make sure that absolutely no data is left on the drive and I am totally starting from scratch?

    Hi David Hamilton1;
I guess that all depends on how critical your data is in relation to how much time you want to spend doing the erasure. Those higher level erasure options can take a significant amount of time to complete. Personally I don't have anything on my Mac that I think is worth more time then a simple erasure even if that does leave it some what recoverable. To me it seems some people are going overboard on this issue.

  • Is Time Machine the best way to backup two external drives?

I only have the most basic understanding of Time Machine.  I hook up an external drive to my MacBook Pro, click "backup now" on Time Machine, wait a while, and forget about it because I've never had to use it to retrieve a file - thank heaven.
Now I also have two external 2TB portable drives that are close to full and which need to be backed up.  I just bought a 4TB drive that I haven't taken out of the box yet.  Is it a simple matter to create two Time Machine files on the 4TB drive ... one for each of the 2TB drives?
And is Time Machine the best way to do this?  Or is there some other system that makes more sense for backing up on this scale and with two drives?
    -JOHN

No Time Machine is not the only way.
You can use one of the drive cloning softeare programs to clone your internal drive to an external or you can use OS X Disk Utility to do basically the same thing, IE Clone/Copy your internal drive to an external.
But in your case it look as if the upgrading of the iPhoto database has wiped out alll your images. What you are actually asking about is "Can you now get back those photos without first doing any backup of any type".
And the answer to that is No you can not.

  • Best way of connecting multiple hard-drives to imac?

Hi - can anyone suggest the best way/alternative way to connecting 2 LACIE d2 extreme hard-drives to my imac G5.
Dilema - I don't have enough native firewire ports to have both drives direct to the imac. I don't have any firewire 800 sockets on the imac and I don't have enough native usb ports (although I don't really want to use USB anyway!).
Although I have both USB and Firewire hubs - I am not keen at putting harddrives through hubs.
However, what I was thinking (and this is the question really - has anybody done this?) - is it ok/stable to connect one drive to the other with firewire 800 cable and take the output of these two via firewire 400 to the imac? Is this an exceptable solution or are there any obvious alternatives I am missing?
Has anybody done this? Does it work fine/fast enough for video/audio projects?

I was disappointed at the lack of a second Firewire 400 port for chaining Fire wire devices on the LACIE drive when I got it, not that its a huge deal I guess.
So basically you want to try
    [Drive 2] <<FW 800--Cable--FW 800>> [Drive 1] <<FW 800--cable--FW 400 >> [iMac FW 400 port]
    or
    [Drive 2] <<FW 800--Cable--FW 800>> [Drive 1] <<FW 400--cable--FW 400 >>[iMac FW 400 port]
I have no idea if this would work or not, cant wait to see if you can pull it off or not. For the first example it would depend on whether the FW 800 bus in the drive fell back to 400 speeds properly.
For the second example it would depend on whether the FW 800 and FW 400 connections in the drive were bridged or not if not then it would only see the first drive.
Hopefully someone has some first hand info out there. Good luck

  • What's the best way to configure my thunderbolt drive with the new mac pro?

I have an external pegasus drive connected to my mac pro.  Obviously the computer is limited in space and I was wondering whether I should move my "user" folder which will include documents, pictures, videos, etc onto the pegasus.  That way the 256gb hard drive on the mac pro is dedicated solely for the os and and apps.  What do you guys think?

    I concur. See the following:
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • Best way to defragment my hard drive?... XD

I use my mac to run ProTools and Logic. Because I have so many audio files on my hard drive and make edits all the time I need a way to defrag it. OSX takes care of most of the problems for the average user... too bad I don't fall into that category XD... DON'T TELL ME IT TAKES CARE OF ITSELF! An external drive with a is normally my way to solve this problem but i'm in a situation where that resource isn't available to me. All thoughts are appreciated. If theres a free way to do it I'd be smitten THANKS Y'ALL

How To Defragment A Hard Drive
This is the fastest and safest method for defragmenting a drive. Plus, it does not require third-party software, but it does require a spare hard drive.
    1. Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the external one.
    2. Boot from the external hard drive.
    3. Erase the internal hard drive.
    4. Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    After startup do the following:
    Erase internal hard drive
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.  Do not quit Disk Utility.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
    1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    3. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.

  • Best way to modify an existing Term Set in SharePoint 2010

    Hi,
We have a term set called 'Responsibilities' in our term store which contains less than 100  level 1 values and is currently used by a user profile property. We have requirement to update the existing term set values. The new 'Responsibilities' term
has over 700 values with some up to level 3.
By default when a CSV file is used to import a new term set with an existing name, it creates a new term set post fixed by a number 1 but never overwrites the existing term set. After some testing i have come with the following options and wanted to
know which one is the best way to create new term set:
Delete an existing term set and create a new term set using a CSV file. I believe it will cause any issue where the existing values have been used. But we are expecting all the user to re-edit their user profiles and change the 'Responsibilities' values
to the new term set values. I have also tested and can verify after full crawl has run the user profile with old values (where users haven't updated their user profile value) doesn' t appear in the search.
Use PS script to update an existing term set using the CSV file and deprecate the old values once the new term set values have been imported. This will still require user to re-edit thier user profiles to change deprecated values.
Rename an existing term set and import the new term set using the same name i.e. Responsibilities_Old and re-import the 'Responsibilities' using the CSV file. Re-configure user profile property to the new term set.
Can someone please suggest if there is anyother better way to update an existing termset? Thanks

  • Best way to free up hard drive and still access pics

My 7 years worth of pics have filled up my hard drive.  What is the best way to use TC (if it can be used for that) to free up my hard drive and still access the pics?  If i also used an external HD plugged into the TC would that show up in my finder?  Thanks in advance

The TC is a lousy place to locate your photos.. the simple reason is there is no backup.. The whole reason for the TC is a backup.. if you move the picture to the TC there is no automatic backup without setting up software and another device as backup location. So you may as well either.
    1. Put a bigger hard disk in the Mac
    2. Plug in a USB or Firewire drive into your Mac
    3. Get a proper NAS which does auto backup
    4. USB drive connected to the TC will work but is by far the slowest option. The data rate is half that of the same drive connected directly to your computer.
    5. Get a computer as a server into which you can place or attach a heap of hard drives.
