Best way to disconnect from external screen?

This problem has been on-going, but I am only now asking for help. It has recurred over now 3 reinstallations of 10.5.
I have an external (Dell) screen, and I run my MBP (Core Duo 2GHz) with the internal screen closed. I have not been able to figure out how to detach the computer from the screen and have it reliably sleep. Instead of sleeping, the MBP goes into some sort of dark-screen state, in which I have to first kill it (holding down the power button for 10 secs.) and then reboot it.
There are the following connections: sound out, USB out, video out, and power.
For a while I tried the following: sleep the MBP (from the Apple Menu), unplug each of the wires. Often when I do this, the MBP will wake up when the USB is disconnected, but since the lid is closed, it doesn't really wake up. When I then open the screen, the screen does not light up, and I have to kill and reboot the machine.
Later I have been trying: unplug the external screen, then unplug the other wires. This seemed to work until today, when I found the same problems.
I have this feeling that the machine isn't really crashed, but that somehow it is losing touch with its built in screen, since I find that I have to first kill the machine (pushing power button for 10 secs), and then reboot it. But since the built-in screen is dark, I don't know what else to do.
Obviously, I could always shut down when unplugging the external screen, but I would rather not do this.
Thoughts?

I'm unable to recreate the problem on my CD MBP running 10.4.11. It's unclear if you are still unplugging peripherals after you sleep the MBP, but the bottom line is that you shouldn't do that - unplug the USB and the external monitor (audio out/headphone port doesn't matter) +and then+ put the MBP to sleep. Also, note that you should not move the MBP until it is really asleep. Look at the light on the latch - when you select sleep, the light remains solid for a while, then starts pulsating. During the solid light period, the MBP is writing the contents of RAM to the HDD (Safe Sleep); if you move it during this process, you may trigger the sudden motion sensor on the HDD and interrupt sleep (it may still appear to sleep, but when it "wakes" it does so as you describe, with a black screen. (Note that this is the main cause of the "+I put my MBP in the bag and when I took it out it was blazing hot and the screen was dark and it wouldn't wake up, so I had to do a hard reboot+" posts.)
Hope this helps...

  • Best way to import from external drive that I'm loading LPs on

    I'm transferring many LP's to an external hard drive as MP3 in a LP folder.
    #1 - What's the best way to import into iTunes and still keep my original file where it is as well as have a copy in iTunes? Would I just import each song individually or could I add folder? I do have the setting checked for copying song to itunes. Just not sure if I should import or add?
    #2 - Is there a way to import into iTunes as AAC or do I have to import original MP3 and then convert to AAC? When I do this and try to delete the MPEG-3 songs from iTunes.. I'm somehow also deleting my original MP3 file that's in the LP folder. I believe this pertains to what I'm doing in question #1

    None of the above.
    There's no importing involved. All you do is open the v6 Library with 09. It will then update the Library, preserving all your work. As always, back up first.
    To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
    Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
    But however you do choose to link the two machines...
    Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
    This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

    Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
    Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

  • What's the best way to safely eject external backup drive

    I just bought a new Seagate external drive and made my first backup. Their website said the best way to disconnect it is to drag the desktop icon to the trash. I apparently ruined my previous backup drive (Adata) by right-clicking and selecting "Eject" from the context menu. This same "Eject" option is available for the Seagate drive and I read on this forum that it's a safe way to disconnect the drive. However, after using my Adata drive for a couple of years and getting frequent warnings saying the it hadn't been ejected properly after the previous backup, last week it just wouldn't work anymore and backups simply failed. So I'm not feeling confident about how to safely disconnect my new hard drive... Thanks for any advice.

    Things can happen to drives after a few years of year of use, even if the hardware itself is OK. The directory structure can get corrupted, etc. Choosing "eject" rather than dragging the icon to the trash isn't going to make a difference. I think Seagate tells users to do it because it's perhaps the simplest, most obvious method. Disk Utility can usually fix minor problems with your directory structure or volume info.
    One problem with external drives is that some external enclosures are a lot better than others. So a drive can seem to be failing when in fact the enclosure itself has a problem. It's a good idea to have a spare dock or enclosure on hand to test for this possibility. A spare known-good cable is something else to keep in your "toolkit".

  • Best way to use an external drive

    Hello all,
    I have several photos.
    I also have three computers that I regularly use: my Windows PC, my Macbook Pro, and a very new iMac.
    Rather than place all my photos on each computer... I thought I could place them on a Western Digital Passport portable ext. drive. Then somehow use the drive from computer to computer to edit/play with my photos.
    How do I best use iPhoto 08 to do that? I'm not sure... do the photos have to be on the computer in order to make albums, libraries, folders, etc? Or are those things more of thumbnails that POINT to certain files?
    Please help a newbie understand the best way to use his external drive.
    Thanks for any and all help!

    Hello, and welcome, Theodore!
    I must first say that I don't yet have iPhoto 8.
    I do, however, have a lot of experience with external drives (I have two). I have a huge amount of music in iTunes, so I keep a copy of it on each external drive. Then, when I need to access my music , I turn on either external drive, up comes the External Drive symbol on my display, then I go over to my dock, and select iTunes. I must remember to first open up the External Drive BEFORE I open iTunes (or iPhoto). I then add or subtract music (or photos), edit, and work on my collection. When I'm finished, I just close the application, then select the Hard Drive symbol, and choose File/ Exit Hard Drive. Reach over and turn off my Hard Drive, and it's all good. I just always remember to open the Hard Drive FIRST, before opening the application.
    The same would work for iPhoto. If you place iPhoto onto your external drive, you could probably use any of your computers to connect to it. I would suggest you think about backing up your external drive's contents with either another external drive (which was my choice), or other alternate storage methods.
    I only have one PowerBook, not multiple computers, but, other than that, the situation's the same. You want to keep your iPhoto collection off your computers, and onto one external drive. I hope this information can be of some help to you.
    All best wishes... Cea

    I have the Printer Pro app, and it seems to do a good job locating my wireless printer, but it gets complicated to print webpages or pages documents. What is the best way to print from an iPad 2?

    If you have a compatible printer, use AirPrint http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/airprint.html and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
    If not, you would need to purchase software, such as:

    i dont know what you mean by "a soft screen", but read this: To clean the screen on your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, first shut down the computer and unplug the power adapter. Dampen the included cleaning cloth with just water and wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly onto the screen.

  • Best way to read from a file

    What would be the best way to read from a file. Which classes do I need to use?
    I have to write a program, which reads data from a comma separated flat file, parse it and after inserting some busineess logic insert into a databse .
    I will have to read the data line by line.
    Any help????

    I would use:
         public void readData()
              try
                   data = new String[this.countRows("comp.txt")][];
                   BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("comp.txt"));
                   for(int x = 0; x < data.length; x++)
                        StringTokenizer temp = new StringTokenizer(br.readLine(), "?");
                        data[x] = new String[temp.countTokens()];
                        for(int y = 0; y < data[x].length; y++)
                             data[x][y] = temp.nextToken();
              catch(Exception e)
                   System.out.println(e.toString());
         private int countRows(String f)
              int t = 0;
              try
                   BufferedReader brCountRows = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(f));
                   while(brCountRows.readLine() != null)
                        t++;
              catch(Exception e)
                   System.out.println(e.toString());
                   return t;
              return t;
         }It works deliciously!

  • Best method of importing from external drive?

    I have a 1T LaCie and want to know the best method to get those images into LR. The defaults are: "Add" and "NewPhotos" to "MyCatalog"
    I think I may have more than one catalog and am not certain how to combine them. Is it best practice to have only one catalog?

    dunno if you can do it directly, but, assuming the drivers are up-to-date, use Image Capture*, which should get you  a scan, then save it, then when sending the email, click on the paperclip,  and choose whatever it was that you scanned, wherever you saved it....
    and then send it.

  • BEST WAY TO RECORD FROM TV

    Whats the best way to record from TV and then be able to edit the footage, without losing quality?
    Is it with a dvd recorder, how to you get the files off the recorder???
    Thanks
    Simon

    If you already have a digital video camera, you can probably do it without buying anything extra. I have done this by connecting the video output from my able box to an input on my video camera, then connected the camera to the computer using the FireWire cable. I opened iMovie and imported the video from there. Of course, it's a bit of a pain, so I haven't done it often, and the quality is only as good as your camera is capable of. You may need to buy the cable to connect the cable box to the camera, though mine came with such a cable.
