Best way to do a "blank" page

I am wondering the right way to have a blank page. I am using 2-level tabs. When one clicks on the top-level tab I have it, currently, launching the first sub-tab. but I thought it would be better if I had it just show the sub-tabs but launch no actions until the person clicks on the sub-tab they want. I get the blank page to show but the top-level tabs do not show when I do the blank page. I am assuming this is something to do with the fact there is no sub-tab to control that. Am I doing something that APEX just doesn't like? Or is there a "trick" to getting this to work properly? The functions I have run fast so if I have to leave it with the function being run for the first sub-tab I can live with that. But it just seems I should be able to change that.

The fundamental issue that I see is that the PDF file has to live somewhere which is web enabled. I had a number of files which lived on a web enabled FTP site and simply used a text item in the portal to contain a link to the document similar to your example.
Alternatively, you could use a procedure and APIs to create a item programmatically or to load the file as a blob directly to the database, but I am not sure how that is easier than simply putting it on a portal page somewhere and referencing it using the direct access URL for the item.

Best way to do a FAQ page

What is the best way to do a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page?
I don't see anyway to link to a place in the page, so the only way is to list the Question & Answer one right after another in a long text box.
Any ideas?

Cyclosaurus has posted a method using javascript in a HTML snippet which would be more sophisticated than Peter's method. Read his post in this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7676908&#7676908. He has several other posts in the iWeb 08 forum on anchors. The method is a little difficult to understand if you don't know java script very well.

Best way to include appendices to pages document

I am trying to transition from using MS office (for over a decade now) to using the Apple suite of apps.
I am in grad school so I write a lot of papers. I am working on one now that requires appendices at the end. I am working on the paper in sections right now (main body, appendices 1, 2, 3, etc..) and was curious what the best way to do something this is in pages?
Can you create different sections within one one document instead of simply copying and pasting the appendices at the end of my document? That would be a big hassle, going back and forth between different files. Like I said, I would like to be able to keep them all on one document.
Any ideas? Do you think it's perfectly doable in grad school to use only Pages for your word processing needs? (I've had to many crashes with Office on my mac, and am ready for the full change over.) Any advice, or suggestions?

Best way to move data from page to page inside app

Hi all I started writing this and it got way to complicated to explain in full without a novel.
Breif description. I am using query string that starts in the parent window (from href in json file) it then has to be moved into the iframe url when moving to other pages to avoid security as page and iframe are conflicting http and https. and cannot be accessed.. it seems there must be a better way.
So my question is what is the best way in open platform to move data from one page to another?

Small data just a webapp ID and I am using the URL. But if you pass a ID say from Json ie "href":"/Admin/AppLoader.aspx?client_id=dev-name&ID=111111" it gets passed to the page url. This can be referenced using document.referrer initially. As the app is inside another frame and url that is https there is security issue using parent.location between https and http. Fine but then if you move to a new page referrer is no longer as there is no real referrer and you have to use location but you cannot. Now the work around is to pass the value from the page url to the app url at the start. and then you get around http https security issue when using parent.location but this seems convoluted and like a work around. Is this really the only way or the best way or a bad way. without using other ways that seem over kill for 6 odd characters.

Best Way to Output to New Page for Printing

On my website, I have a page called
"form.cfm". The output from the form gets
processed, and results displayed onscreen, by
"formProcess.cfm" What is the best way to take
the form data displayed on formProcess.cfm and output it to a new
page suitable for landscape printing? I want to have a link on
formProcess.cfm that says something like "Printer Friendly
Version". When the user clicks that link, a new window
opens with a printer-friendly page. The same form data displayed on
formProcess.cfm is now displayed on the printer-friendly page. My
biggest question is, how to get the form data to formProcess.cfm,
and then to a third page without a bunch of fancy coding that's
above my thick head?

Best way using ADDT? : No page refresh, but form fields change on selection.

The top half of the form is a simple user registration. The bottom half is dependent on the user selecting an item from a dropdown menu which then changes the form accordingly.

How about an alternate solution, where each form is on an a spry widget accordion plane?
When tyring to do that with ADDT or Dreamweaver forms, you would have to define multiple insert or update transactions as well -- that´s per se not possible, also because an insert/update transaction always comes with an "redirect after insert/update" trigger, means the user will be leaving that page.
But is there a way to still have the simple registration form at the top of the page?

Would each widget form have its own submit button?
You might want to consider creating separate (non ADDT) forms for each SPRY accordion which submit their stuff to the database behind the scenes and without leaving the page. To my knowledge the SPRY documentation shows how this can be done -- but as this isn´t related to ADDT, I´m not going to comment on that :-)
Then on submit it inserts the simple registration form along with its own form?
the main form
(regardless if it´s driven by ADDT´s or Dreamweaver´s insert/update behaviours) will be redirecting to another page

Best way to edit and deploy pages to remote host.

I wasnt sure whether to ask this in General or here.... sorry
if this is the wrong forum.
When I make a site using an access database & asp pages
In the DW I tend to do everything from the remote server.
I set the site up in my properties and test remotly etc and
it all works out fine.
But what I find is remotely it seems to slow up my PC and DW
hangs quite often when I try to close it down or change sites..
My problem is I have a connection string for my database and
Locally the database is just in the root of the site so I used to
use a Server.mapPath to get my connection..
But on the remote server My DB is in an outside Private
directry and my connection string needs the full path to the DB.
What im finding is if I test locally and upload the
connection string online chenges to the local connection string and
I have to go and change it to get the proper paths on the server
again, even if I choose not to upload dependant files this seems to
happen.
Im wondering how you guys do this and if there is anything im
missing in my set up and the best way to edit test and upload your
files in DW.

I tried DSN locally and it worked very well, but not all
servers support it even if they allow an access database and I have
found some just allow DSN-Less so plumped to do this that way...

Best way to execute different jspx pages from a parameterized URL

I'm looking for an elegant way for ADF to determine which page to go, based on a parameterized URL.
I currently have a way of doing it, it's not what I want, but perhaps some other ideas.
For example:
http://localhost/MyDemo-ViewController-context-root/faces/decisionPage.jspx?vehicleType=car
http://localhost/MyDemo-ViewController-context-root/faces/decisionPage.jspx?vehicleType=boat
Given vehicleType, I need decisionPage.jspx to go to car.jspx or boat.jspx immediately
Currently, I had to do this:
1. Expose a method in the application module setVehicleType()
2. decisionPage.jspx has a binding for a methodAction to call setVehicleType() and grab the vehicle type using ${param.vehicleType}. Store the vehicle type in the application module when this page is loaded.
3. In decisionPage.jspx, create a commandButton into the page
4. When the user clicks on this commandButton, it will be bound to a UI bean.
5. This UI bean will then get the vehicleType from the application module method getVehicleType()
I don't want the client to go directly to car.jspx or boat.jspx. I also don't want this extra step of the client clicking on a button to go to the proper page.
Any suggestions would be great!

You could create a jsp page (or a servlet) which acts as the starting point of your web application. (decisionPage.jspx in your case). In the jsp, grab the url parameters using a scriptlet, put them on the sessionScope and redirect to the correct page.
By putting the value on sessionScope, you have access to the parameters in your whole application during the session. You can use it to execute a query with bind variables.

Best way to insert music on page?

I want to play a simple MP3 on my page...and a different song for each HTML page WITH a button to turn it on or off.
I have tried the Quicktime plugin but I dont like that way since it looks so bad and it comes up GREY box sometimes so I am not sure every person with have QTime installed on their computer. I have bought several flash component MP3 players but cant them to play different songs on different pages...even after the author of the players assured me I could get it to work. ( I dont know code).
I would love to just open my HTML page, create a APDiv layer box and drag a flash player into the box so I can place it on the page where I want it...and tell it to play 1 song....then do the same thing to another HTML page and tell it to play a different song. Errrrrrr !!!
What is the easiest, no heavy code... way of playing music with an attractive interface with buttons to turn on/off ?

Thanks John. Yes I know. I am not too concerned about the music playing on the phones.... and I think most people do have flash installed and running on their desktops since its so popular and really needed in this day and age. I am almost fine with NO music at all since there is an arguement for some surfers are listening to their own music or at work (have to be quiet) and any music is a bad thing...but I at least have a button there to shut it off if they dont want to hear it.

Is there any way to insert a blank page in the middle of a document (rather than at the end)?

I can do this in Word, but not Pages. I'm using Pages '09 Version 4.1. Any help would be appreciated.

You can also click at the end of a section and insert a new section from the Sections link on the toolbar.
Basic rule is if you are clicked in the text, then the new section will go after the current section.
If you are not clicked in the text then the new section will be at the end of the document.
A section obviously does not fit inside an existing section.

What is the best way to do a double page spread for a magazine?

I'm in the process of putting together a magazine and would like to do some double-page spreads in it, but my printer has requested that the magazine be sent to him as single pages. If I set it up as 'facing pages' and then change it to single pages when I've finished, will this upset my double page layouts??

Set it up as facing pages, then when you make the pdf DO NOT CLICK SPREADS.
When you click Spreads you are asking InDesign to produce a PDF where page 2-3 are joined, and 3-4 are joined etc.
When you don't have Spreads selected then Indesign produces Single Page pdf.
A single page is what is required by a printers with the pages running in reading order from page 1 - finish (for example).
Do not attempt to impose the document yourself.
Remember to include your crop marks and your bleed.
Sidenote on crop marks and bleed:
Crop marks are needed to trim the page to size when printed. As printers can't print right to edge of a sheet, and that it's near impossible to trim a sheet of paper right to the edge of a colour - the colour needs to extend past the crop line, this is called bleed.
When you bleed the document, i.e., extend any item that is tucked right against the foredge (the edges opposite the spine), then you need to extend this object off the page into a "bleed" area.
This allows for human error when trimming the paper, as each sheet is not trimmed individually (that would take forever!) they are stacked on top of each other and trimmed in stacks. It would be impossible to stack all the sheets exactly even, and there is movement on the press, so compensating for the movement and the fact they can never be stacked exactly even - for this reason you need objects to extend past the edge of the page.
The crop marks tell the guillotine operator where to trim the sheet. Once they have the measurements in their guillotine machine it's a simple matter of rinse and repeat with as many stacks of paper there are.
And printers can sometimes fold and trim a print job folding machine, and since it's a machine and you have to account for mechanical errors and human error, you need bleed too.
Bleed is important - If you don't add bleed then the object stops at the foredge of the paper. And if the blade trims/crops close to the object but misses by a sliver - then you have a sliver of white on the printed piece, which is highly undesirable.
So you need crop marks so the printers know where exactly to cut the paper, and to cut into the bleed so that you don't have slivers of white.
And yes you need crop marks even if you don't have bleed, if you don't have any bleed it's likely that the edges of the paper are just white, so there are no markings where to cut to give the correct size that you want. So crop marks need to be included no matter what.
And the placement of crop marks is important. As I said earlier, crop marks are for letting the guillotine operator know where to trim the page so that it cuts into the bleed area. The bleed area to allow for mechanical, physical and human error. And seen as the bleed can sometimes be included in a final printed piece it is not desirable to have anything other than bleed objects in the bleed area.
For this reason you offset your crop marks to be outside the bleed area. As I'm in Europe I work mainly in millimeters, so I would set my Bleed Area to be 3-5 mm (check with your printers for what bleed you should allow) and I would set my crop marks to Offset by 1 mm more than the Bleed (i.e., 4 - 6mm).
This ensures that the crop marks do not encroach the bleed area. If your crop marks do encroach the bleed area you run the risk of the crop marks appearing on a final printed piece.
So in Summary
Make sure you have bleed where necessary on your document.
Add the desired amount of bleed - in my case 3-5 mm.
Offset the crop marks so they don't encroach the bleed area - in my case 4-6mm.
(bleed depends on the printers requirements - then make sure you offset your crop marks to be outside the bleed area).

Best way to refresh page after returning from task flow?

What is the best way to refresh data in a page after navigating to and returning from a task flow with an isolated data control scope where that data is changed and commited to the database?
I have 2 bounded task flows: list-records-tf and edit-record-tf
Both use page fragments
list-records-tf has a list.jsff fragment and a task flow call to edit-record-tf
The list.jsff page has a table of records that a user can click on and a button which, when pressed, will pass control to the edit-record-tf call. (There are also set property listeners on the button to set values in the request that are used as parameters to edit-record-tf.)
The edit-record-tf always begins a new transaction and does not share data controls with the calling task flow. It consists of an application module call to set up the model according to the parameters passed in (edit record X or create new record Y or...etc.), a page fragment with a form to allow users to edit the record, and 2 different task flow returns for saving/cancelling the transaction.
Back to the question - when I change a record in the edit page, the changes do not show up on the list page until I requery the data set. What is the best way to get the list page to refresh itself automatically upon return from the edit-record-tf?
(If I ran the edit task flow in a popup dialog I could just use the return listener on the command component that launched the popup. But I don't want to run this in a dialog.)

How to Create Blank pages & no links for more pages

just started using iweb ...is there a way to create a blank page not associated with pictures, podcasts movies etc and I want to create a site with multiple picture pages but i dont want a link for every single page on my heading or that area between my header and the body.
whats happening right now is there is a link for every page in my site on the heading if i keep this up my heading will look like a big paragraph

If you want a page not to be displayed in the navigational menu, then just click on the Inspector and click on the Page tab (second from the left). Under the name of the page (which you can also change here) there is a box to include page in navigation menu. Just uncheck that box and your page won't show up. Of course, I assume you will have a link to the undisplayed page(s) from other pages that are in the menu.
