Best way to do a full restore of an external disk?

Time Machine has been backing up my OS X boot drive + an external FireWire HD. The external HD just died (i.e., OS X mounts it with a warning, DiskWarrior reports it can't update the directory due to a hardware failure).
I'd like to restore to another external HD of the same size.
Nearly all of the discussion I've found relates to a full restore of a boot drive. One blog article described naming the new HD the same as the original, and doing a conventional Time Machine restore to this new, empty drive. But the article warned that, after the full restore, Time Machine would then proceed to backup every file on the new drive. That is, Time Machine would not consider the new drive to be a replacement for the failed drive and simply pick up where it left off.
Should I take that approach or use the "Restore from Backup" utility on the Leopard install DVD?

Ward,
The approach you read about is one of the only ways it will work. Another contributor had another:
"If you don't have another external. in finder preferences check the box to show the whole computer in the sidebar. click on the whole computer in the sidebar in finder and start TM scroll back to the time the external was present. it will show up in the TM finder window. navigate to your photos select what you need and hit "restore". you'll be prompted for a restore location."
I haven't tried it myself so I don't know if it works.
Don't use "Restore System From backup..." as that will not restore failed external drives to another drive.
"Yes", Time Machine will likely perform a new full backup of the external drive. Before that occurs, I would add the drive to the TM Exclusion List, then restore the backup to the drive. Then verify that everything is there - maybe give it day or two. Next you can go into the Time Machine "time travel" interface and highlight the old drive in the Sidebar, and delete it with "Delete all backups of...". That should free up space. Finally, remove the new drive from the TM Exclusion LIst and backup it up.
Let us know if this resolve your issue.
Cheers!

What is the best way to do a full backup of my Mid 2011 MBA running 10.8.4?

My apologies for not clearly specifying purpose of full backup.
I would like to make a full backup of my MBA from which to restore in case of a problem. I am planning to do some clean up of my machine and want to have the ability to restore in case I inadvertently do something that will cause a problem.
Regarding Time Machine, I have had problems with that application and I am baffled by some of its behavior and lack of clear documentation of its terminology.
    OK.
The disadvantage of a clone is that it only contains a copy of the drive at the time the clone was made, so if you need to restore the drive the clone must be up to date. Carbon Copy can be set to incrementally update on a schedule of your choice (I do it every day). The update tends to be quick however as only changed or new files need to be copied.
Time Machine if used as designed will always be up to date, so it has an advantage for long term backup.
As a backup system a clone is not adequate on its own, it lacks versioning (the ability to recover an earlier version of the file than the current, or last backed up version)
I prefer clones for disaster recovery, and Time Machine (or a similar alternative) for backup, I also keep long term archives for files that I do not want to lose regardless of age.

  • Best Way to Aggregate Multiple Announcement Apps and Possibly External RSS Feed

    Hello,
I have two separate announcement apps (one in sub-site A, and one is sub-site B). I am trying to create a webpart that will display content from both apps together.
I have tried to setup a CSWP and have been able to set the query to pull in the data (Although it shows expired announcements, which I would need to eliminate). Now, I am trying to customize the display of the CSWP, including the property mapping values
to display the announcement title (currently working with the URL as a link) and body (truncated like the announcement summary view if possible).
How can I get the body from the announcement to display? The 'body' field isn't listed as an option in the drop down list of mapping values. Do I need to toggle an option on the separate announcement apps, create a column, map a field, or some combination?
Also, I'd like to know if it is possible to add in an external RSS feed. Or, if there is a completely different way to approach and accomplish this, please let me know.
    Thank you

    Hi,

Yes, if you have access to another computer with an optical drive. You can connect the two computers via your home network and use File Sharing to transfer the installer to your HDD. You can also use:
DVD or CD sharing- Using Remote Disc
Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks

  • HT1751 What is the best way to move my iTunes library from an external PC drive to a Mac external drive?

I just make the move to Mac computers.  My iTunes library is currently on a PC formatted external drive.  I would like to move it to an external drive that i have formatted for Mac.  What is the best way to do this?

Is the entire library on the external drive or just the media folder? If it is the latter, and you still have access to the PC then see make a split library portable.
If the drive is in FAT32 format you can connect a portable library directly to the Mac, holding down Option as you start iTunes. Otherwise you either need to copy it to a local drive (Mac should be able to read NTFS) or install a full service NTFS driver so that the library can be read and updated.

  • Best way to merge multiple iPhoto libraries from several external hard drives into one, while deleting duplicates?

Problem: My wife and I both have MacBook Pros (MBPs).  We take a lot of pictures and import them into iPhoto.  When the storage capacity of our MBPs gets full, I have been moving our iPhoto libraries into external hard drives, which are now multiple (3 or 4).  The problem I now realize we have been making, is that once the iPhoto libraries were copied onto the external hard drives, we were only deleting about half of the photos in each iPhoto library remaining in our MBPs (because we wanted to keep some of the important ones in our hard drives).  Once the storage capacities of our MBPs got full again, I would repeat the whole process again and again.  In essence I now have several large iPhoto libraries (each about 80 GB), each with multiple duplicate photos, divided among several external hard drives.  And I am running out of space on my hard drive again.  So what is the best way to:
    a)  merge all of these iPhoto libraries into just one, while simultaneously being able to delete all the duplicates?  (or would you not recommend this?)
    b)  prevent this from happening again?
Thanks.  BTW I am using OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and iPhoto 8.1.2 (2009)

If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($30) version of iPhoto Library Manager
The Library Manager app can be set avoid duplicates.

  • Best way to make a bootable backup on an external HD

What is the best way to make a bootable copy of the startup drive on my mac. I have an external HD which would work. I already run Timemachine but if I'm correct it isn't bootable.
    IMAC using MT. Lion
    thanks in advance

If you create either a new partition on the external or Wipe, Repartition the external, and then create a New Full TM backup on either the wiped or new partition with Lion installed as the OS and you have a Recovery HD partition that Recovery HD partitionwill be copied over to the New TM backup and will be bootable.
TM backups made with Lion installed over the top of older ones made with Snow Leopard does not create the Recovery HD file on the TM backup drive. Only new TM backups created when Lion is installed does this.
Ot you can create anopther partition the external and use one of the Cloning software programs to Clone your internal to that other partitions

  • Best way to change Iphoto library referenced across multiple external drives

    Hello,
I am relatively new to mac and I think I've gotten myself into trouble with my large collection of photos. I have a single iphoto library which references photos on multiple external drives. However, iphoto is now very slow to launch and I believe this is due to the number of photos (~160k+, I think) in the library. How should I reconfigure my iphoto library for better performance? I would still prefer to have a single library if possible, am willing to have multiple if necessary.
Is the best approach to destroy my iphoto library and recreate multiple libraries, one for each drive with the libraries being located on the external drives with the photos? Any negatives to this? I am really worried about losing photos.
From searching the forums I believe I have an approach but I am uncertain if it is the best way. Is the best approach to destroy my iphoto library and recreate multiple libraries, one for each drive with the libraries being located on the external drives with the photos? Any negatives to this? I am really worried about losing photos.
The library itself is on the main hard drive while the photos are spread across 3 external drives, with some on the main drive as well. I have been manually importing the photos through finder, then adding them to iphoto. I am using Iphoto 11.
Any tips, pointers, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1 - a referenced library is extremely problematic and is strongly not recommended - especially one spread accross several volumes
2 -  iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can convert to a managed library - check the option to copy imported items to the iPhoto library and rebuil using IPLM
3 - this is likely to cure the slowness too
4 - multiple libraries are not necessary or desireable
5 - the only protection against losing photos is a great backup scheme - I run Time Machine giving  me hourly backups and do a daily bootable clone giving a second backup - plus do an occasional off site backup

  • Best way to set up a new ssd boot up disk

    Hello
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard, and am hoping to breathe some new life into it with some additional ram and an SSD for just the OS, Applications, Library and System folders.
I'm looking for advice on the best way to go about setting up the new boot up disk. I've read that it might be best to do a fresh install of the OS onto the SSD, so at the moment I'm in two minds about whether to do just that or to clone the existing disk and then delete the data I don't want on there.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Best way to set up my new 500GB firewire external HD?

I want to set it up as an external bootable HD, what is the best way to do this?
    Thanks
    Dan

So I would go for four partitions. Two partitions for boot-able backups of your HD the same size as HD.
Then split the rest in two, one for Photos/Movies other for tunes. Maybe tunes the smaller of the two.
You also might want a fifth for "Time Machine" ? Being that this is new and I don't have it, I am not sure I would trust it, til its been around for awhile.
Backup often and alternate! Backup before and after major updates. You never know when you might want to go back to a pre-update.

  • Best way to move small subset of music from external drive to laptop?

I have all my music on an external harddrive. I want however, a small subset of that music to be on my laptop, so if I'm away from my external drive, I can listen to a few things. What's the best way to do each of these: moving one song, a playlist of songs or a random selection of songs.
    Thanks,
    JONATHON
    I have a powerbook G4, OS/X: 10.4.11, i-tunes 9.1.1

Can you direct me to your solution?
I recently consolidated all of my 130GB of media onto an external hard drive [EHD}.  Now I want to remove a remaining subset of 70GB still remaining on my laptop. Although attaching the external drive to laptop works well for listening to music,  slightly more convenient would be to have a very small subset of music on my laptop. Most convenient, would be 10 or 20 of my favorite playlists, in sum, perhaps 1,000 mp3s.  If I completely delete itunes [libraries and files] from the laptop, i think i understand how to transfer such playlists from the EHD to the laptop. However, I am not crystal clear as to  the most efficient way to selectively 'copy' only the corresponding  1,000 mp3s from the EHD  [comprising 130GB worth!] to the laptop? Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Really appreciate it.

  • What is the best way to copy my iphoto library to an external drive?

I want to free up space on the internal drive by copying the iphoto library to an external drive and then either deleting the library entirely from the internal and using the external as my working library or continuing to use the internal as my working library, but deleting lots of old pictures.  I have TC and use TM for backups and have a Seagate HD that I want to use for extra storage.  Thanks,

    To move the Library
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    To have two libraries:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them:  Hold down the <b>option (or alt)</b> key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the +Internal+ Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.
    c:
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using
    iPhoto Library Manager

  • Sistem restore in an external disk

Question, how should I go about it? Should I just end up writing some catch to the exception that runs a script to remove all the files in the /tmp folder?
    sudo rm -fr /tmp/*
Is there a way for the system to dump the tmp folder automatically once it reaches a certain size?  If I were going to use the code above, how would I make a script would take my sudo password when it is asked and complete the rest of the process? Any more elegant solutions? Thanks.

again nothing but the program is running here, so after so many writes to disk /tmp will fill and that IO error will generate again, making the /tmp folder bigger or not having some automated way to dump /tmp are  band aid and non-solutions.  I am not sitting at this system, the idea is for it to do its work and for me to review the files from time to time. Shutting it down or rebooting are not viable options [that dumps /tmp].
What I am looking for is an intrinsic way to handle the /tmp file size capping out or I am stuck making a bash script that will remove it for me when my program generates that IO error. The thing I don't know, is when you sudo in a script how do you give your sudo enabling password? If no one can tell me, I suppose i can find it out, just thought I would ask while I have you. Also if you know of a way to just tell lunix to dump /tmp when it is full, that would be great. Thanks
