Best way to do a news-style person highlight effect

as in when there is a large group of people but one is highlighted by an oval, sometimes in a contrasting colour.
would the best way be duplicate the clip on a higher track and cut out a mask shape, and lighten the underneath clip? what filter do i use to put on a solid oval outline?
cheers all
Hugh

You really don't even need to duplicate the clip if you use Andy's Region blur from the link below.
Just apply Andy's blur set it for your oval, make the appropriate adjustments to tint, feather, and positioning and then simply Invert the blur

  • What is the best way to make google earth style maps using Creative cloud

I work in News.  I am trying to come up with the best way to create a google style map for our news stories.  I want to create a map that I can highlight certain counties and pinpoint certain spots on the map.  For example cities and landmarks.  So far we have been using our weather graphics system to accomplish making maps, or we have used google earth to make maps too.  From what I understand there would be a lot of leg work in the process of making a project that has a map database with any possible info I would need to make a map.  I need to be able to output the graphic in a Quicktime movie format, or at least a JPEG.  This would help us put the map on air for broadcasts.  Any suggestions, thoughts, advice on where to begin?  Am I wasting time?  Should I stick to google maps/earth?
    -Newsie WBBJ

Don't leave it as an LOP file. FM will overwrite the contents every time. You may still have a ".backup.fm" version of this that will have your original table.
Also, the approach mentioned should be the very last step when publishing the book, not something that you're continuously updating.

  • Best way to spec a new Linux server from existing Windows 2003 server?

We are looking to upgrade our servers to 11.1.2 and I am looking for some documentation/suggestions on the best way to spec the new box on a Linux platform.
I do have the current documentation from ORACLE with regard to "Estimating Disk and Memory Requirements" but am looking for some processor suggestions as well..
Any thoughts or ideas would be welcomed.
Especially helpful would be anyone who is currently running in a Linux environment any pitfalls or issues you've been having with hardware or software.
    Thanks in advance.
    Adam,

I don't think it is possible to recommend you any hardware setup without knowing your environment, budget and expertise.
If you plan to install Enterprise Linux, like Oracle Linux, you should look into getting server hardware and not a desktop system. You may also want think about using Oracle VM virtualization products.
Are you looking for rackmount or blade systems? it might be possible to limit your hardware decision between HP, Dell and IBM. I would personally prefer HP, but that's a matter of experience.
You should probably find out your OS requirements. E-business products and installation instructions are usually designed for the OS version that existed at that time. If you install a newer version of the OS you may run into configuration or backward compatibility issues that may require to install additional software. You should check your OS requirements first before purchasing any hardware. The newest hardware may not support older versions of the OS.
The HP support side shows a Linux certification matrix at: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/hplinuxcert.html which might be helpful should you decide to get HP equipment.
You might also want to check your current Oracle licensing if you upgrade to a faster or more CPU's.

  • What is the best way to connect my new MBP to monitor - DVI, VGA or HDMI

What is the best way to connect my new MBP to a computer monitor?  DVI, VGA or HDMI?  Thanks

I recommend the Apple MiniDisplay Port to DVI adaptor.  I would avoid VGA.  MiniDisplay Port to HDMI will work as well (3rd party).

  • Best way to start a new catalog for 2009 ?

    Hi,
What's the best way to start a new catalog for the new year, with all the keywords and all the presets of the modules (without having to export all the folders) of previous catalog 2008 ?
    Thanks,
    Dominique

Well there is a cost too in not being able to find all your images in a single step, and inconsistencies soon develop - eg a keyword is plural in one catalogue, singular in another. Speed or stability issues are not simply related to catalogue size, and I've seen decently-performing catalogues 50% bigger than yours (as well as slow ones of a few hundred images). Have you optimized the catalogue recently?
But if you think it's a good idea to fragment control of your picture collection.... Presets will be carried over to a new catalogue as they belong to the machine (unless you have the save with catalogue preference turned on). Keywords can be moved via the Metadata > Export and Import Keywords command. If you have lots of collections and smart collections, then maybe make a copy of your existing catalogue and then remove all the items from it - making sure you don't trash them of course.

  • Best way to add a new section in the middle of a tune?

    hi,
what's best way to add a new section in the middle of a tune? I think I came up with an interesting transition to a tune... what's the best way to try it out?
please be specific. if it's just select all and cut and move - I already know that one. somehow, I bet there's a better way.
    thanks in advance...

You should be able to enter the "in" and out" points in the transport bar. And then under the Region menu, choose "Cut/Insert time."
So if, for instance, you go up to bar 32, and want to add 8 bars, enter 32 1 1 1 in the top transport place, and 40 1 1 1 in the second. Then select "Cut/Insert Time", and an 8 bar whole will be added to your song.
Be aware that if there are overlapping MIDI notes found at that cut point, Logic will warn you about it, and give you some options. In this case, I think "Keep" would be what you'd want, but every situation is different...
    Hope that helps....

  • Best way to edit an asset style??

i wanted to change the color of an asset style. what's the
best way to approach this? for example, there are all kinds of
grayscaled glassy styles in the assets panel. if i take a plain
rectangle and want to apply the glassy asset style, but in a
different color, what's the easiest way to change the coloring?
    thanks

Make your changes to the Style (Edit current ones/ or Add New
    ones via the PI Filters).
When complete with changes, go back down to the PI, click the
+, the n 'Options' from the list, then Save As Style.
Give your Style a new name, then OK.

  • Best way to upgrade to new drive?

What is the best way to upgrade the hard drive on a Macbook? I mean to ask, what is the best way to transfer the complete system onto a new hard drive?
    Thanks!
    Captain!

    # Buy the desired new 2.5" drive. If buying a 500GB unit, the Samsung SpinPoint fits inside, the Hitachi doesn't, the Fujitsu is too slow.
    # Buy an external Firewire case for the drive. Install the new drive in it (this is temporary).
    # Power up and plug in the new drive to the Mac. Make sure the system sees the new drive.
    # Using Disk Utility, reformat the drive to a single partition, using a GUID partition scheme and in HFS+ format. Most new drives come in FAT32 or NTFS format. Search in the forums how to get rid of the NTFS format.
    # Using SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner or even plain old Disk Utility, clone your startup volume (internal drive) onto the external.
    # Reboot and start up from the external (press Option before startup sound). Verify that everything works.
    # Shut everything down, take new drive out of case, exchange with internal drive. Do it yourself or pay qualified technician to do so. Old style MacBooks are relatively easy, MacBook Pro's are more complex, Oct'08 portables are a piece of cake.
    # Start portable, verify everything works. If so, put old drive in external case and use as a backup device. Else put it back in so you'll have a working computer while you figure out what went wrong.
    # Enjoy...
Note: Since the Nov'07 release of the Mac portables, they have the Apple Hardware Test available as a hidden partition in the HDD, meaning that you can test your Mac without requiring the original Install Disk #1. If you change the internal HDD, you will lose that functionality, since no one has figured out how to copy the thing over to the new drive. This means you will need your Install Disk #1 to test your hardware from that point on.

  • What's the best way to set up new imac for logic etc?

    In brief:
Getting new imac (27", 3.4 i7, 8-16GB ram, 1TB HD). Will be using it mainly to run Logic Studio (loads of plugins) and Final Cut Express. I also have 2 external Hard drives one 500G one 1TB.
The last imac I bought was my first and just went ahead and threw everything at it not really knowing where things should go. This time I want to set things up correctly.
Basically, with what I've got, what is the best way to set things up. I.e where do I put logic files, samples, BFD2, Amplitube etc. Where do I put videos for use in FCE. Storing projects and backups for use with Time Machine.
Also noticed the new imac will only have 1 firewire port. I will need to plug in the Hard drives (daisy chained), camera and RME Fireface 800. Was thinking of getting a Thunderbolt Hard drive but they are expensive and hard to find.
Would really appreciate any help before I get the new machine and start messing things up again.
    Thanks.

Adding to babowa, enable the system firewall in System Preferences>Security>Firewall tab. Click Advanced and check Stealth Mode.
Lion is a pretty steady and secure operating system, and as there really aren't MANY Mac viruses, there ARE viruses out there still. OS X is pretty good about letting you know if you do accidently download a virus, and it will help you throw it away if it detects one, such as the MACDefender virus. OS X has built in security features such as sandboxing that doesn't allow viruses in as easily as a Windows PC. As for hackers, as long as you have the firewall enabled and a secure password (for your computer and email accounts), then you should be fine.
It's the user that lets the virus in, not the computer (unless there's some untold serious vulnerability in OS X, which is highly unlikely). Keep your apps up to date, don't download pirated software, and be street smart on the internet. Don't download things or visit websites that you don't think are real. Safari includes a Phishing feature that automatically detects known phishing sites, protecting you from that big problem. Keep your passwords secure and you should be fine.
There are antivirus solutions out there, one notable one available in the AppStore is Intego's VirusBarrier (free and plus versions), if you feel you still need one.
I wouldn't worry about it. Windows users who switch to Mac are always asking these questions.
Here's some good reading as well

    Enjoy OS X Lion

  • What is the best way to protect my new Macbook Pro?

I finally have a shinny new 13" Macbook Pro Rentina and I'm wondering what is the best way to protect it? I am considering either a hard case or a sleeve but which one is the best? This thing is worth more than my car and I can't afford for anything to happen to it! Hard case? Sleeve? Both?

Congratulations on your MBPR! I had the exact same question when I bought mine. I ended up using a hard case and a sleeve. For the case I went with the Kuzy Hard Case and an Incase Deluxe Sleeve. Using a sleeve and case is great and I feel like my Macbook is very well protected and I am no longer scared of breaking it with this setup! Best of luck!

  • Best Way To Set Up New HD on MacBook Pro ?

I am wondering what you feel is the best way to accomplish the following:
I am using a macbook pro with a 5400rpm HD that is just way to slow,
I bought a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Solid State Hybrid
I need to have all my info and data transferred to my new drive, I am not sure how to do it as I only have one mac, there cant use the migration assistant program.
Will timemachine work if I restore from it (have never done that before)
I am looking for the quickest and most reliable method available.
    Thank you..

    migidy wrote:

Yes. See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If you already have Time Machine backups, that will be quickest.
But if those are your only backups, I'd recommend also making a bootable clone, with DiskUtility, CCC, or SD, just in case.
It's rare, but on occasion a backup drive fails while restoring, and everything is lost.

  • Best way to migrate to new server?

We're moving from a G5 XSERVE with an old RAID to a new one with the Promise. Will all the permissions (we're bound to Active Directory) carry over without an issue or will we have to go through Workgroup Admin and re-do everything (which would take hours)? Just trying to find out the best way to do this migration with minimal headaches. The new server is already set up and running, bound to AD, etc. I'm just worried about the permissions being hosed.
What other issues should I be aware of? Is there an Apple document that covers migrating/upgrading XSERVES?

  • Best way to display archived news stories?

I'm using the content editor web part to display a news story and then at the bottom of the story I have a link to archived stories. That takes you to a custom list with the remaining stories, but the view is the title on the left and the body on the right.
I'd like to have that list display the title on the top  with a few lines of the story below it and have the remaining stories below that with the newest first.
Is a custom list the best way to do this? If so, how can I change the view so the title is on top of the story with just a couple of lines of the story displaying and remaining stories below that?

Oops, sorry. I am doing a copy/paste into the Content Editor web part. Then when I have a new story I'll copy that content into the custom list for the archive.
If I do content query for the archives. I'm just going to query the custom list?
Is there some way to have the "live" story write to the custom list automatically so I don't have to copy/paste it when a new story needs to be posted?
