Best way to do a voice over in FCP

I want to do voice overs--usually I just record into my minidv cam, and capture keeping just audio. Can I just plug a digital mic plug into my G5 and start rockin?

Yes you can.
As you found out.
I've actually used some usb microphones that were grafted from ViaVoice

  • Best way to do mobile voice over work

Hi there, just asking if you have any advice for a set up for on location VO work. I have a decent mic, but am finding that at the clients premises, often the VO is echoing a bit. Is there a simple way to help avoid this. Also, when doing VO work at my location, is there a way of stopping my macs fan from cutting in all the time whilst working with a mic close by? Seems every time I click record and the client starts talking, the macs fairly loud drive starts spinning away.
    Thanks
    Stuart

thanks for your advice. I amusing a samsung C03U multi pattern usb mic, which was recommended by a local apple store? The best I have acheived so far is to set it on its figure of 8 symbol and with the symbol that looks like a hockey stick ! (roll off i think).
I was thinking that maybe a screen made of felt or something would help?, but thats me just thinking that the material would in some way deaden any echo.
    Cheers

  • What is the best way to EDIT a voice narration in Premiere Elements 11?

What is the best way to EDIT a voice narration in Premiere Elements 11 when words or paragraphs have to be repeated?

    TomVideo4477
The rough description of Preview Window trimming..
    a. double click clip in Project Assets to bring up Preview Window
    b. move Timeline indicator to beginning of section, hit Set In; move Timeline indictor to end of section, hit Set Out.
    c. next you can drag the segment from the Windows to the Timeline audio track and/or drag the segment from the Preview Window to Project Assets to become part of the project's media.
The following should give you some thoughts on the above.
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2013/06/pe11-project-assets-organization-for.html
Although more from a video trimming perspective, the principles apply to an audio clip as well.
Now "delete and close gap" can be interesting depending on what is around the area involved.
Please check out the details on that in the following.
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2014/02/pe-delete-and-close-gap-failures.html
Not sure I am clear on
The “delete and close gap” option in the edit menu does not work. Do I have to move the file to the Narration Track on the Timeline to do the actual trimming?
You should be able to trim the narration in the Preview Window opened by right clicking the narration clip in Project Assets and then drag the segment to an audio track or narration track or dragging the trim to Project Assets for source media.
Please check out the above and then let me know if you are OK with the information. If not, let me know where I need to clarify what I have written.
    Thanks.

  • What is the best way to store and iterate over lists of words?

    Hi,
Im trying to create a naive bayesian classifier to attribute aurthorship to some texts. I have three text files in the form of a list of words (listA, listB and listC, where listA is a disputed text and listB, listC are those of known authors). I need to feed these into my program, than compare listA to listB (to check if listA has the same words as listB), perform the classification and do the same for listA and listC.
Im new to java and would like to know the best way of comparing the text files....could i store listA in an array....listB in a hashmap, iterate over the hashmap to check which words are also contained in listA and store the similar words in a seperate arraylist?
    plz help.

If you just want to check if one set of words contains another set of words then something implementing java.util.Set might be sufficient. Read the API docs, you don't need to write much code yourself. Maps are for looking up values based on keys; your problem statement doesn't mention that so you don't need them. Lists are for when the order of entries matters. Read this for more information:

  • Is there a way to restore deleted voice overs in iMovie 11?

I recorded something through iMovie 11 once and then accidentally deleted it. It's no longer in my project. Is there a way to somehow retrieve this audio file? Does a voice over file even exist on the mac, or does it only exist on the project screen, something that can be gone for good if you press "delete?" If an actual file does exist, where can I find it on the mac? Spotlight won't help.

You need to select the Blue Yeti as your input device.
First go to System Preferences/Sound and click on Input Device. Make sure your Blue Yeti is in the list and selected. Make sure the red light is on on your Blue Yeti. After a period of unuse, it may turn itself off.
Then, in iMovie, start your Voiceover session by pressing the Microphone on the middle toolbar. You will get a screen like this where you can choose the Blue Yeti.
    Then follow the instructions here.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3b0fb060
After you have recorded your voiceover, you can select the Voiceover Track and make additional adjustments in the Audio Inspector. For example you can use the Graphic Equalizer.
Having said all that, Garageband is a great tool if you need even more adjustments. You can export your movie to the Media Browser and do this in GarageBand, or, you can record a voice track in Garageband, render it as AIFF, and use it in IMovie.

  • Best way to transfer large files over the Internet?

What is the best way to transfer files that are too large to send by e-mail over the internet, preferably ways that are free or very cheap and are easiest for sender and receiver to work with?
I assume one way is by ftp, but would that necessarily mean buying space on a server somewhere that both I and my recipients can get to? or is there a way to avoid this cost?

you can use a cloud storage like Mobileme (not free) or DropBox (free up to 2GB).
you can also use direct file sharing over internet. no extra software or 3rd party services required. that's what I use to move files between my home and work computers.

  • Moving from 13" MBP to 15" MBP...  What is the best way to get data moved over?

I have a 13" MBP Mid-2009 model, upgrading to a 15" MBP Late-2011 model.  Both are on Lion OS 10.7.3.  I use Time Machine to back up the old machine.  If I use Migration Assistant, is a recovery from the Time Machine Backup taken on the 13" MBP over to the 15" MBP the best way to bring over all of the Apps and Data?  I know that the 13" has different HW drivers, so am unsure if the recovery will overwrite these drivers on the new 15" MBP.  Just trying to make sure that I do not mess up the new system, but have not been able to find out if Time Machine will preserve the critical OS files during the recovery.
    Thanks all!

Some suggest you use Setup Assistant when you first turn the new MBP on.
I have never used it to transfer any data from one computer to another, from Mac or PC to new Mac.
I simply don't trust it, never had on any platform.
I find it easier for me to just network computers together and copy data over. That way only the data I want is copied to the new computer. I can make all the interface changes myself.
Oh as eww says do NOT use a TM backup from the older Mac to move data over to the new one. You could possibly be looking at reinstalling the OS on the new unit.

  • Best way to export entourage emails over to apple mail.

i want to quit using entourage, what's the best way to move emails and folders from entourage over to mail? thanks.

If you have local mail folders within Entourage the one of the ways I've found to do it - free of charge - is to click and drag the various local mailbox folders to a folder created on the desktop or within the documents folder.
Then you 'File->Import->File in mbox format' into OS X Mail.
The other option, which I don't recommend because SysAdmins will not appreciate it, is pushing all local mail back up onto an Exchange server. The first may seem time consuming but you'd still have to re-file the mail locally off an exchange server if you went the second route.
    Hope this helps....

  • Best mic setup for FCE voice overs?

Hi - I need to add a voice over to some footage. Any recommendations on microphones... Would the standard audio in jack be good enough, or would a Griffin iMic be the best option?
    Cheers for the advice.

I use the M-Audio Fast Track guitar/mic recording interface. You can hook-up your XLR mic or use it to play your guitar in Garageband.

  • Best way to share aperture library over network on two computers?

I've read several posts about doing this and most recommend using an external HD and just hot swapping. However, is their not a better alternative? Can I not share my library over the network, or just remote connect to the other computer?
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi Terence and Leonie,
You can run several Aperture on the same computer as long as all Aperture are using distinct libraries.
What Aperture does is to create a simple lock file in <your Aperture library>.aplibrary/Database/apdb The lock file contains the PID of the process. So not two Aperture could open the same library (although I don't know how good they have manage the concurrent creation, locking, verification of this lock, this is a typical and difficult software engineering problem)
Anyway, I have not said that Aperture supports concurrent editing. That a file is a database or a simple text file, you have basically the same issues on network or in concurrent environment. So if the folder structure holds simple, flat text file or xml object or databases, it is still a bunch of files (this is a UNIX system by the way ).
Aperture contains more than one SQLlite file, there are some at the root folder, some under Database/apdb etc. there are also XML files that could be used as database.
Anyhow, editing a file (SQLlite, XML, txt, doc, etc.) either on a share or locally is plain similar. The drive can fail too, although much less likely than the network.
Network file edition can have a few shortcomings, but nothing that when known can be blocking.
Locking files over the network can however be tricky and depends largely on the network protocol used (NFS, SMB/CIFS or AFP just to name a few). In addition, if you import files from /Users/foo/Photos in Aperture (without copying them within Aperture), they might not be visible from another computer or only the previews, as the path /Users/foo/Photos is not "visible" from the other computer.
What really is a problem when you put a file not locally is the file system type and its features. HFS+ supports extended attributes (metadata), many other file systems support these but the API (how the software, such as Aperture, access this feature) might not be similar, in addition the amount of metadata or their structure might differ from file system to another. And this is where you might lose information.
A tool like Dropbox is pretty good at maintaining the metadata across different computers, and it has been adapted to do so for OS X specifically (and also for Linux and Windows).
The second problem is if you would have a Mac and share via SMB (the Windows share network protocol, aka CIFS on recent Windows versions) the library, SMB might not support the reading and writing of HFS+ metadata, thus data loss might occur.
Apple is just warning us of all these shortcomings, and advise to use local storage formatted as HFS+. Because even a local external disk formatted as NTFS or other file system could be a problem.
However, power users who understand the risks and limitations of a network share (in general) can create a disk image on a share (even if it is SMB). As for OS X, once the disk image is mounted, it is just like any other local hard disk, it is just "slower" especially latency wise. OS X supports perfectly disk image mounted on a share, it takes care of properly synchronising it.
Of course, due to the nature of the link between the application data and where they are stored, in case of application or OS crash, the amount of data loss could be greater than when the data are held locally.
I hope this clarify better my post.
Note: another shortcoming of having it on the network is: Aperture lock the library by creating a file with a process ID. If the same library is opened from another computer on the network, this other Aperture instance might see the lock file and could perhaps not find the corresponding running process. This Aperture instance might then decide to ignore the lock and proceed with opening the library. This might have some consequences.
But I haven't developed Aperture so I don't know how it would behave

  • Best way to collect periodic data over RS232?

I'm using Labview 6i to collect data from a device over RS232.  The device manual says that it delivers data digitally by sending 10 bytes every 100ms.  I'm using VISA Write to send an initialization string, and then I step in to a loop containing VISA Read set to read data synchronously, set to read 10 bytes of data.  I have tried a number of things to get this to work:
Adding a wait to the loop and varying the wait time
Increasing the bytes read from 10 to 15 and filtering out the specific 10-byte set I want to read
Taking out the wait completely and letting the loop run untimed, limited by the VISA Read node
The problem I encounter is that often the VISA Read node returns a set of data that is "shifted".  In hex, my 10-byte set should look like this:
    FFFE 0106 04 FF FF FF 45 D4
Where the FFFE 0106 04 acts as a header.  Often the 10 byte set I retrieve contains some bytes from one set, and some bytes from the next set; so, the header might lie in the center or at the end of the 10-byte set rather than at the beginning (in which case there is some data lost at the leading and trailing ends)
One thing I have tried is throwing out "bad" sets, but then I am losing data and not getting the full 10 data points per second that the device is capable of.
When reading data like this, where a set of bytes is sent periodically, how can you ensure that every set is properly read?

When working with a device that is essentially streaming data back to the computer you have to take on the responsibility of  parsing the response and breaking it up into individual messages. One good thing in your favor is that you have a well defined header that you can search for in the datastream. The nice thing about the shift register approach is that you can parse as many or as few packest as you want. Moreover at the leasurely rate the device is passing data LV should be able to more than keep up with the flow.

  • When traveling aboard, what's the best way to go about voice data services

I will be traveling for 5 weeks in Turkey and I will like to be able to use my iPhone to make emergency calls and maybe be able to get 3G coverage for navigation and information purposes.
I understand that service fees for this kind of situations can be astronomical, but does anybody knows if one can sign for local service since the iphone recognizes foreign networks and links to them when in other country.

Thank you all for your help.
Unfortunately my iPhone is locked to Telcel, and I just got an special voice plan for Turkey from them at about $4 USD per minute, which been expensive, it's about half of what the charge would be without it.
But not data deal, so I think I will be limited to WiFi only.

  • Best Way of Exporting for iDVD when using FCP?

What would anyone recommend in terms of getting the best output from FCP for making an iDVD?
I usually export as a self-contained QT movie. Is there a better way?
    J.M. Prater

There's an easier way... export a non self contained movie. The result will be the same... just faster file export and smaller file to boot.
DVD SP will make a lot better looking DVD's if you have that. The encoding done through Compressor is better than what can be done in iDVD.
