Best way to do simple remote desktop support?

As someone who occasionally needs to help friends and family, what is the most useful tool to support a mac remotely, over the Internet? I don't seem to actually be able to use any of the tools that come with Leopard, since I don't feel like manually configuring the remote routers of my friends, nor do I want to spend hundreds of dollars supporting them. Am I missing something with Apple's Screen Sharing, or am I correct in these assumptions?
Not sure I want to ask my friends to buy into iChat, since this requires a paid subscription to iMac, correct? Or will the free version support screen sharing?
I've tried using Timbuktu, but even this seems too hard for some of my family to fathom. It also costs lots of money.
Is VNC (ie. chicken of the VNC, etc) still the best way to go on this? Other ideas?
The assumption here is that the other person is a total novice, and can barely use the computer other than email. You would be suprised how many people out there are at that level...(g)

iChat can use a free aim or jabber account and you have access to all of the features that come with it. Leopard and iChat/Screen sharing is going to be the easiest way to do the support you're speaking of

  • Is there a way to Report out Remote Desktop Gateway Manager Monitor data?

We are running Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services configured to provide a managed pool of VMs through a RD Gateway server. Everything is working well. We would like to generate a regular report on the information that shows up in the Gateway
Monitoring window about connections and users etc. Is there any way to generate such a report without purchasing 3rd party software?

    Hi,
Based on my experience, you can use Remote Desktop Gateway Manager to view information about active connections from Remote Desktop Services clients to internal network resources through an RD Gateway server. However, there is no such options in
RD gateway manager to create reports for that.
It seems that System Center Operations Manager can monitor Remote Desktop Gateway Service and the number of sessions that run through the RD Gateway are monitored.
    Best regards,
    Susie

  • Windows server 2012 stops accepting simple remote desktop clients

Hi, I have a Standard Windows 2012 Standalone server as host for several Virtual machines ( f.e. AD and Exchange)because I do not use a keybord ar mouse for that server I always use simple RD to maintain that host.
Since sunday I cannot connect anymore. I checked Rd configuration, network and Client ( W7). Nothing to find why.
Se below the result of checking the host:
    Windows PowerShell

    PS C:\Users\Administrator> get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server'-name "fDenyT

    fDenyTSConnections : 0
    PSPath             : Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\Registry::HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal S

    PS C:\Users\Administrator> get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\R

    UserAuthentication : 0

    PSProvider         : Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\Registry

    Name                          Enabled
    RemoteDesktop-UserMode-In-TCP    True
    RemoteDesktop-UserMode-In-UDP    True
So everything seems to be correct.
I do not have installed Remote desktop server/services etc. because ther is no need to.
I did not change anything on the host, no updates etc short before the problem occurred. Even not on the clients
Where to look to find the solution. On internet I could not find it, only that what I already checked.

    Hi,
Thanks for your comment. Sorry for late response.
How many users you are trying to remote desktop at a time?
I am asking here because from your troubleshooting you have done all your steps but seems you are moving out for more session connection and that’s why you can’t connect.
Because by default server only provide 2 remote session at a time and that is also for administration purpose. So if you are trying to get more than 2 remote session for your server then you need to install RD Licensing server, activate the server, purchase
RDS CAL (per user or per Device) as per your requirement and then configure them. After this you can get more connection.
Please clarify and review this point 1 under this KB 2477176 article (only for reference).
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Can somebody recommend a remote desktop support solution?

I am looking for a remote desktop solution to support our remote office(s) Mac systems.  Apple Remote Desktop is not an option.  All versions of VNC that we have tried will not work with Mac Lion.  Bomgar has been ruled out because of finances.
    Anybody have other suggestions?

Normally I would suggest TeamViewer.com, but you are talking a commercial situation which should be paid for, and you mentioned financial issues.
I do not understand the VNC not working, as I've used Screen Sharing (just Apple wrapped VNC) both to and from Lion to other Macs.
Can you please describe the configuration information
What VNC clients? (Mac OS X Screen Sharing, Chicken (or Chicken of the VNC), JollysFastVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, RealVNC, other...)
What VNC server?  (Screen Sharing, Remote Desktop, Vine Server, other...)
What computer is trying to connect to the remote offices?  Is it a Mac or other
What operating system version (is this the Lion system?)
What is the office Mac?  Is that the Lion system?
What do you have as a router at work?
Can you configure your work router to allow VNC ports 5900, 5901, 5902, ... through your router and vector the different port numbers to specific Office Macs?  <http://portforward.com>
Have you tried Mac OS X Screen Sharing?  On the Office Mac you enable System Preferences -> Sharing -> Screen Sharing (optionally, you can enable a VNC password for non-Mac clients).  On the Mac client, you use Finder -> Go -> Connect to server -> vnc://address.of.office.router:5903 which would connect to port 5903 on the office router which you would have previously port forwarded to a specific office Mac.
If you are in the office, then you should see the Mac via bonjour in your Finder side-bar or via Finder -> Go -> Connector to server -> Browser
    Anyway
No-IP.com or DynDNS.org can provide a dynamic DNS name to make finding your office router easier.

  • Is there a way to fix the Remote Desktop Connection Manager memory usage crashes?

I'm using RDCMan and it has been using a lot of memory and crashing.  With 12 connections it uses 1,548,976 K of memory and crashes with an "Unhandled exception" "Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from
HRESULT: 0x80070008)."  I love this program and want to know if there's a way to fix this on my end.  It seems like other people are not having this issue.  I'm running a fresh install of Win7 Ent.  I have .NET 3.51 and 4 installed.
Do I need to installed .NET 2.0?

  • What is the best way to update the remote server?

    Hi,
Sorry, but this is a newbie question.
Is there a way to update your Flex app on the remote server without taking it down momentarily? Currently, if I update the app, I remove the files from the public_html folder on the server and then put the new files in their place. The site goes down while I'm making the change. Is there a better way of updating or is this the standard way?
Sorry for such a basic question.
    Thanks,

  • Best way to apply simple CSS text styles?

    Merry Christmas all!
I'm about to apply pre-defined CSS text styles to about 200
    individual pages.
Most of the text will be 'Body'.
As all of my pages are children, based in an editable region
in a cell of a table in my template page, am I safe to apply this
'Body' style to the whole cell at template level?
I will then overwrite individual bits of the pages with other
    styles e.g 'Headline'.
OR, do I need to apply the CSS styles only to which text it
will apply to for each individual page? I.e. will I run into
trouble if I apply a CSS style to all text and then overwrite
    certain parts?
    Any advice most appreciated!

In your template you could apply a style in the non-editable
region. This style will apply to all content within that container.
Say, you specify color:#333 and font-weight:bold
In a specific webpage, in the editable region you could apply
a different style to all or some content say color:#FFF . This
would over rule the color:#333 but the font-weight:bold would stay
unless you specifically define this property as something else.
Incase you're still not sure, backup your work, experiment
with one set and if things get out of control, you still have the
    backup copy.

  • Remote desktop licensing on separate server

I would like to deploy Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2012 R2.
My idea is isolate the Remote Desktop Licensing role from other Remote Desktop Services roles and put Remote Desktop Licensing role to separate server which is also KMS host ?
Is that a good idea ?
    Thanks !!

    Hi,
Thanks for your comment. Sorry for late reply.
Yeah, you can put the RD License server on separate server and then use the other server to add roles when needed. But please see that, there must be one of the configuration for RD Licensing server.
For both Per Device and Per User CALs issuance to work, the RD Session Host and RD Licensing server in any one of the following three configurations:
    • Both in the same workgroup
    • Both in the same domain
    • Both in the trusted (Two-way trust) Active Directory Domains or Forest

  • Windows 8 remote desktop touch keyboard problem

I have been playing with the HP Elitepad Tablets at work for some users, who need to connect to terminal servers, or their PC. The issue that they have is that the standard RDC does not support the touch keyboard (different then the onscreen keyboard or
virtual keyboard). When they connect into the remote session they are able to pull up the touch keyboard, but by a series of maneuvers that I don't expect anyone to have to fight with (swipe in the charms, tap settings, tap keyboard, and then select "Touch
keyboard and handwriting panel". Then they are allowed to type into a field but if the keyboard needs to close so they can actually view the screen then this has to be done again). I have downloaded the Remote Desktop app from the Windows Store and have
used this and it works well, you can tap the PC you're connected to at the top and select the keyboard, but not every user has a Microsoft Account, and I am not in the position to have them sign up for one just to get one app not to mention issues of using
their personal email for their work PC.
Is there a way to get the Remote Desktop "App" from the Windows Store without having to sign in with a Microsoft account?
Is there a way to add in Remote Apps to the Remote Desktop app for easy switching between RPDs? (Swiping from left to right or selecting the dropdown from the Remote Desktop app and switching between RDCs)
Any help would be appreciated. Again this is only for a few devices, we currently have less then 10 of these tablets on our domain.

Do you want to encrypt or decrypt the password? If you want to decrypt password then you can able to perform by this way.
Go to Remote Desktop Connection Manager -> Edit -> Properties -> Logon Credentials - Clear the Password. Then click Save
In addition you can refer below thread for encrypt password.
How does Microsoft Remote Desktop Manager encrypt passwords?
Apart from this, there are other 3rd party software but I will suggest that to use in windows system Remote Desktop Connection Manager is the best option as it’s a product of Microsoft itself and it’s free.

    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Keyboard losing focus while in remote desktop session

    Hi,
I have several Win7 computers that remote into a hosting company's server. Our users will log into the hosting company's servers via remote desktop. The issue that keeps coming back is that the keyboard will stop functioning after a user locks the computer
then returns after a short period of time to continue working. The remote desktop session will remain working while the pc is locked. After unlocking the computer the keyboard will not work in the remote session. The mouse isn't affected by this and minimizing
the session, the keyboard works fine on the local session. Sometimes you have to restore down then restore back or minimize the RDP session several times to get the keyboard to work inside the remote session. On a few occasions, ending the RDP session
will cause the keyboard to work again. Anyone experienced this and have a resolution for this issue? This issue appears to be occurring more frequently and we have already recreated user profiles on the remote server but to no avail. Thank you for your help.

    Hi Nicholas,
I have this issue aswell, and it has traveled with me over a switch if computers. So I suspect there is something with my user account/profile or similar. My colleague does not have the issue.
I also tried the hotfix but I received a message that the hotfix doesn't apply to this computer. The
pc is a windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. What can I do to resolve this?
Any way to reset my Remote-desktop-cache or settings for my user account perhaps, start from scratch.
    Best regards
    - Björn
