Best way to do this: repartition existing imac internal drive and restore

Hi all, I am trying to solve this problem: flaky bootcamp/reinstall of XP/reinstall of OSX yet keep existing apps working in the process.
Experience level: 4 years on a mac, decades PC sys admin.
History:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2490437&tstart=0
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2489101&tstart=0
My plan, and please verify validity:
1) create a clone of existing 10.5.8 system using CCC, to external harddrive
2) create timemachine backup on external drive (extra protection)
3) boot up on external hardrive OSX image to repartition internal harddrive.
Question: does it matter what version of OSX to boot up on to do the reformatting? I have several bootable OSX drives, including one with 10.6 install DVD, but I have no physical DVD disks from Apple available. I do have the boot camp 3 drivers on a pen drive.
4. clone back the image created in step 1.
5. run bootcamp assistant to create bootcamp partition
6. install XP or Vista, and use pen drive to install boot camp 3 drivers.
What if Scenario: what if I wanted to update this imac to SL while I am here doing all of this reformatting? I am thinking as an alternative to step 3 above, I could do a fresh install of 10.6, and then use the timemachine backup to transfer programs and settings? What are the risks here? The only thing this machine is used for is to record music using Protools, both on the mac side and in bootcamp. Avid says it supports protools in SL:
Avid is pleased to announce that the 8.0.3 version of Pro Tools® software provides full support for Apple’s latest operating system, Snow Leopard. Pro Tools 8.0.3 HD, LE, M-Powered, and M-Powered Essential software for Mac OS X all support the following operating systems:* Mac OS X 10.6.1 – 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard)* Mac OS X 10.5.5 – 10.5.8 (Leopard)
So I guess I am good to go there. Comments? Gotchas? thx!!!

ps. feel free to be as technical as possible; i can take it:)

It probably doesn't matter, but use the version that's the same as, or just prior to, what you'll be running. If you're going to stay with Leopard, use a Leopard version of Disk Utility, just to be sure.
I don't do Windoze, but from what I read, your plan makes sense.
What if Scenario: what if I wanted to update this imac to SL while I am here doing all of this reformatting?
I would advise against that. Don't introduce another big change into the process -- if something goes wrong, you won't know what caused it, or what to re-do. Get Leopard running first, and use it for at least a few hours, or a few days. Then upgrade (the upgrade is very easy -- you just upgrade. There are no +Erase and Install+ or +Archive and Install+ options anymore: just Install, which installs a new version of OSX without disturbing anything else.)
And by the way, you really should have the disc(s) that came with your Mac. You'll need them to run the +Apple Hardware Test+ if you suspect hardware problems, and may need them for other things as well. Give AppleCare a call (800-275-2273); supply your serial number and they'll send you a set for a nominal fee.

  • I have two videos and I would like to use parts of both videos with one audio track what is the best way to edit this?, I have two videos and I would like to use parts of both videos with one audio track what is the best way to edit this?

In Final Cut Express I have two videos I'd like to merge parts of each video into a final film.  What is the best way to do this in FCE?

    Hi
I use a slightly different way than Alchroma.
    Same
    • One video on track 1 and the other on Video.track 2
    • Resize to 25% and move one to the left and the other to the right
    Diff
    • I don't use the blade tool
    • I use the Pen tool and change the transparency - then I get fast or slow transitions in same stroke and easy to fine-tune later if needed. (But this can be done with the Roll-tool if Blade is used - so it might be as easy)
    Final
    • Resize to 100% and Center
    Video is done
Audio - very close to this by changing the level so that best audio will dominate
    • Pen tool here too
But that's me - the Alchroma way is as good as this or may be better for some

  • How do i reformat imac hard drive and restore time machine backup?

How do I reformat my iMac internal hard drive and restore from a Time Machine backup?
I have an iMac 20" Mid 2007 with a problematic hard drive.
IntelCore 2 Duo, Processor speed 2 Ghz
    800 Mhz Bus speed
    4 GB RAM
250 GB Western Digital Hard Drive
    10.6.3
Was getting a question mark upon booting up, so I booted from a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard CD and ran disk utility. Repair disk was interrupted with an error message. 'Disk utility can't repair disk. Backup files, reformat disk and restore backed up files.'
    1. Should I select Erase, Mac OS Extended Journaled, Erase?
    2. If I do this, won't I lose my networkability, and therefore lose access to Time Machine backups?
    3. If it were you, would you go ahead and replace the hard drive? Not sure I should trust this hard drive!
    4. If I need to replace the hard drive, can you send instructions?
    Thanks!

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you have your Time Machine backup drive connected, then you can use Setup Assistant to migrate your Home folder, application support files, and third-party applications and system preference files. I recommend doing this via the Setup Assistant when the option appears.

  • HT4413 I want to transfer about three thousand photos on my MacAir to my iMac. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

I want to transfer about three thousand photos on my MacAir to my iMac. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

    Are the photos in iPhoto?
If they are, you can simply copy your iPhoto Library (located in your Pictures folder) to a thumb drive or external drive and then copy it over to your other Mac. This will only work if the iMac has the same version (or later version) of iPhoto as does the Macbook Air.  Then on the iMac, if you want to combine this new library with the existing one over there, use iPhoto Library Manager (a free download program).
If you want to copy over only a portion of that iPhoto library, iPhoto Library Manager can create a smaller library containing just the photos you want to include. Then copy that smaller library.

I have just purchased an iphone 4 and it needs me to have the latest itunes on my computer.  I have not upgraded by computer for some time and thought this is probably the time to do it. My computer is an imac intel with Tiger 10.4.11. The best way, really the only way, is to purchase Snow Leopard.
    Online (UK): http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Elsewhere: call the phone number in the Apple Online Store.
    Apple's price is $19.99, £14.00, €18.
Snow Leopard is not available to download from any legitimate source.
Once you install Snow Leopard, upgrade iTunes to version 10.7 or the latest, iTunes 11.
iTunes 10.6.3 is the last version of iTunes to support Mac computers with Mac OS X 10.5.8 with either Intel or PowerPC processors, but since you have an Intel iMac, the best solution is to purchase Snow Leopard. Leopard is no longer available from Apple and prices from aftermarket vendors can be unreasonably high.

I have found GearGrip's LCD harness so that I can do carry-on onto the plane...  Or maybe use a Pelican Case to do it as a "checked bag"? Or any other suggestions??! Please help!
    Thanks so much!!

I don't recommend you send the iMac in a checked bag. Might get damaged.
Check the airlines website for carry on guidelines.
Or, if you have the original box that the iMac came in, if you have someone who can pick up the iMac for you, send it ahead Fed Ex and insure the package.
Just make sure the display is covered to protect it. A blanket perhaps.

This is a common mistake and I highly advise against it.
1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.
3: The storage drive might become a portable need, with it being on the TM drive, now your increasing the risk to the TM backup that something could happen to it along with the storage drive, due to increased movement.

  • HT1451 I need to move my library from my old computer to my new laptop. What's the best way to do this?

I need to move my library from my old computer to my new laptop (Windows 8). What's the best way to do this?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

I have a block with this, PLEASE help! I am writing a plsql package that is going to create a custom table everything is going fine EXCEPT that I don’t know what will be the best way to do this. Please point me in the right direction a function or something:
    I have three tables:
    My custom table SZSLIFE
Two existing tables in my DATABASE:

    139203     200710     IS     UG     C     200390
So far I have been able to insert the following records in my custom table. This data is coming from the sgbstdn table
    SZSLIFE_PIDM     SZSLIFE_SLRRASG_TERM_CODE     SZSLIFE_STUDENT_STATUS_CODE     SZSLIFE_STUDENT_STATUS_DESC     SZSLIFE_STUDENT_TYPE_CODE     SZSLIFE_STUDENT_TYPE_DESC     SZSLIFE_STUDENT_LEVEL_CODE     SZSLIFE_STUDENT_LEVEL_DESC
139203     200390     AS     Active     C     Continuing     UG     Undergraduate
139203     200410     AS     Active     C     Continuing     UG     Undergraduate
139203     200590     DW     Directed to Withdraw     C     Continuing     UG     Undergraduate
139203     200610     IS     Inactive     C     Continuing     UG     Undergraduate
139203     200660     AS     Active     C     Continuing     UG     Undergraduate
    139203     200690     AS     Active     E     Readmit/Re-entry     UG     Undergraduate
139203     200710     IS     Inactive     C     Continuing     UG     Undergraduate
NOW the question is: I need to insert the rows from the term 200490 and 200510 because there is data in the slrrasg table for those terms BUT the data that I need to insert is coming from the SGBSTDN table and there is not data for those terms in sgbstdn, so my user is telling my that it is okay to insert the previous term from sgbstdn for example: for the term 200490 I need to insert trhe 200490 in the szslife_slrrasg_term_code but I also need to insert the row from the 200390(previous one) from SGBSTDN.
The same for 200510 insert 200510 in szslife_slrrasg_term_code but the rows from the term 200410 in SGBSTDN.
Please give some ideas of how to do this. I will highly appreciate.

Thank you very much for your answer, I have to confess that I am confused, never code this way. It looks very cool, I will like to learn this technique.
This is what I have using my tables and my columns.
What is the idea here? create a table 4 on the fly with all the coulmns that I need? This is what I have but I don't thing is going to work.

  • URGENT - Items archiving in Portal - Whats the best way to do this ?

    Gurus,
My client has following requirement -
    - The client has lots and lots of content.
    - The content must show on site for 6 months.
    - After 6 months, the content goes to archives (meaning - it does not show on site, but that does NOT mean its deleted - its kind of hidden)
    - The archive content must be searchable
    - After 4 years some content expires while some of it remains in archive forever
Currently, the client stores the content on a file system and there is a process that moves the items after 6 months to an archiving area and after 4 years some content is deleted and some is retained forever.
What is the best way to approach this requirement ?
If there is a solution how to move their existing system (content valid for 6 months and archives for last 4 yrs) to portal ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanx
    Hero

There are a couple of ways to do this:
    1. If the items are all file items and don't have extended attributes, you can just use WebDAV to move the items to an archive location (can be another page or a file system). Use a WebDAV command line utility like sitecopy, combined with the WWSBR_ALL_ITEMS view to select the content. sitecopy should be able to select items based on their last modified date, so you may not have to use the view.
    2. If you also want to archive the attributes, or if the items include non-file items, you'll need to use the content management APIs to copy the items to an archive page. Currently there is no delete API, so once you've copied the items you'll have to expire the originals and then manually purge them.

  • Getting New MBP tomorrow - best way to get files from old iMac?

    Hi
    I'm getting a new 15" MacBook Pro tomorrow...can't wait.
Anyways, I currently have a 20" iMac (Intel Core 2 Dual) and want to transfer everything (music, photos, emails, EVERYTHING) from this iMac to my new MBP.
What's the best way to do this? Will it ask me if I want to transfer files from another mac when I first start up my new MBP?
    Thanks very much!

Yes, the Migration Assistant will ask you if you want to transfer your personal data and programs, and it will guide you through this. It should work with most recent Macs. If your iMac is too old it might not work.
You are not limited to FireWire. Newer versions of Migration Assistant let you do it using other protocols such as Ethernet, since some new Macs don't have FireWire anymore. If your iMac has Gigabit Ethernet that can potentially be faster than FireWire but I haven't tried it that way.
