Best way to eliminate halo?

First, I'm working with Elements 3.
In certain situations, when sharpening and using the high pass filter and other things, halos will form around the edges -- a good example is a treeline where the sky becomes paler at the tips of the trees. The only solutions I've found are to clone over those spots or even to paint them to restore the natural colour. It's tedious, difficult, and often not very satisfactory.
Does anyone have another -- easier -- suggestion?
Thanks in advance.

Halos are a classic sign that you are oversharpening. If you look closely, there is usually other degradation of your image going on when you reach that point. The best thing to do is back off the settings when you see halos.
For images where it's too late, it would help to post one so we can see exactly where you're at.

  • What is the best way to eliminate room hum in my video?

I have a room hum in my clips that I wish to eliminate.
I downloaded Audacity and it worked fine, right up to the point where I exported it to FCE. In Timeline the sound file was out of sync and nothing I have tried will synchronize it with the video. I understand that going through the Audacity cleansing has removed the FCE signals that would have normally produced the out-sync- buttons in the Timeline so that I could rectify the problem.
I posed this problem in a previous post and crowed that I had solved the problem. Turns out, I had not, so here I am, with my tail between my legs, looking for assistance.
    1) Does anyone know of a way for me to export an audio clip from Audacity so that it is correctly reunited with its video in FCE?
    2) Is there a way to move an audio track one frame at a time along the Timeline track so that I can try to align they clips by trial and error? (I know; this sounds very sloppy)
    3) I have been reading with great interest the post by Tricial and her problems with Soundsoap. I was just about to give up on Audacity and then download Soundsoap trial software. Tricial feels, she states, that Soundsoap and FCE are not compatible. One respondent to her post sensibly suggested she contact Bias, the parent of Soundsoap, and ask if their product is compatible with FCE or not. An excellent suggestion. I went to the Bias site and found that in order to ask a question, you must provide a serial number! In other words, you must buy the product before you can ask if it works! I turned to their FAQ page, but this question is not addressed. The closest they come is to saying that Soundsoap works with Snow Leopard but for all I know, that may be only in iTunes or Garage Band.
I so messed up (not exactly the word I was thinking) my sound tracks that I have decided to start over and dump a couple of weeks work. Aargh.
    I would appreciate your wisdom.

    2) Is there a way to move an audio track one frame at a time along the Timeline >track so that I can try to align they clips by trial and error? (I know; this >sounds very sloppy)
Lock your video track, select the audio, type +01 then Enter.
A Move box will appear with the value 01 init, this means the audio will move forward one frame.
Type -01 to go backwards. Typing -02 is two frames etc.
Make sure there is nothing in the way or you will have a +Clip Collision+ warning.
    Can't help with Audacity.

  • Best way to eliminate or at least lessen a cell phone interference noise in a video

We shot an interview the other day and even though we normally remember to tell people to turn off their cell phones, we forgot that day. Right in the middle of a good response we hear the annoying sound that cell phones cause with wireless mics. It only lasts a few seconds, but really takes away from what the interviewee is saying. Is there a way to lessen that noise or even get rid of it altogether?
    Thanks.

This might work for you, depending on how intrusive the interference sound is, and what the other frequencies in the audio file are doing.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Soundbooth/2.0/WSEA8E9ACF-B4CB-402c-A080-FB1A2FBD39F9a.html
Here's a video that shows the basic workflow for removing sounds:

The removal of a cell phone ring is demonstrated at around 4 minutes in. The principle is the same.

  • Best way to ELIMINATE the MORAY EFFECT in a photograph that is moving?

    Hi.
I have a shot of a woman in a striped dress which has a slight move on it. When I export my sequence to QT and watch in the QT player, the image looks great.
But when I burn a dvd using DVDStudio pro and watch it on a monitor, the striped dress creates that nasty moray effect that is TOTALLY distracting....
How to eliminate this? Is it simply to deinterlace that particular shot in my sequence?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark
(sorry, I unintentionally posted this to the Motion forum as well)

Have you tried a quick test with De-Interlace?
I'll hope someone has a great fix, as I run into this from time to time.
My solution to date has been to dupe the clip on a track above and place a very slight gaussian blur filter on the top clip, then add a Garbage Matte and/or Mask Shape/Mask Feather to iso the problematic area..
Might be able to use CC3way Limit Effect and tweak some levels...haven't tried that.
IIRC, I've tried 1pixel vertical shift in Motion tab and/or several of the Video Filters/Video-Shift Fields/Flicker Filter/Image Stabilizer...all to no acceptable effect.
Maybe I've just never correctly tweaked any of the filters. Dupe/Mask/Blur has worked.

  • What's the best way to eliminate and old user's information completely?

My son recently purchased a new macbook pro and I would like to use his 3 year-old macbook as a back-up for home use. Is there a recommended method of eliminating all of his preferences and data? He has already transferred what he needs to his new computer and I want to clean this off as much as possible before adding myself as a new user. It's the white plastic model.

Log into his account on the computer. Open Accounts preferences and create a new account for yourself. Be sure to endow the account with admin privileges and in Login Options set your account for auto-login. Then log out of your son's account and log into the new account you made for yourself. Open Accounts preferences and delete your son's account. Open Sharing preferences and change the Computer Name to one of your choice.

  • What is the best way to eliminate dupe recs inbound Interface?

I want to do as little mapping code as possible. It is possible we may receive duplicates (every field is identical in the rec).
Will a Hashed table not allow me to insert a (TOTAL)(instead of a keyed table)duplicate?
Just because the keys are same, other fields in rec, like time, date, etc. may be different, I want to keep these.
I am thinking about one step to do a simple loop to transfer and update recs to table. Another, or second step ion batch to loop at the table for processing.
I am just looking for suggestions how others have handled this in the past.
             Thank-You.

  • Best way to eliminate duplicated songs in 2 logins?

Our Macbook has several users, and my son and I share iTunes. We've just discovered that, rather than sharing one copy of songs as we had assumed, we seem to have duplicated our songs in both logins - instead of using 60GB of hard disk space for our songs we seem to be using 60 in each log in. My questions are:
    1. How do I avoid this? I just discovered I should've put the itunes music folder into a shared folder, so I assume this is the problem.
    2. If that's correct, should I move my music folder to shared folders and just delete his? Then in his iTunes we oint him to the music in that shared folder?
    thanks!

Do the beeps occur while the narrataor is talking? You can just drop the volume of the track for a moment and the beep will go unheard. If the beep 'steps on' the narration, you'll get short dropout, but it may be okay.
Removing each beep will take four keyframes (two at the regular level, and two 'inside' taking the level down) but you can do it pretty quickly. Page 616 in the FCE3.5 manual indicates that if you hold the 'option' key when you click the level overlay, it places four keyframes at once.
It might help if you put markers on the track where you squelch the beep. Then you can turn off the audio 'waveform' display while you edit the video track.
I think you can accomplish what you want in iMovie, but using markers in FCE might be a significant help.

The fastest way is to directly change the values in the catalog.pse9db database.  The database is a SQL Lite database, so if you know (or know someone who knows) how to run SQL queries against a database, you're in luck because Adobe did an excellent job of designing a highly normalized database schema.
I highly recommend first trying this on a copy of your database.  In general, the procedure goes like this:
Add one of your images on the P: drive into the catalog.  This will establish a listing for the P: drive and its identification in the volume_table table.
Run a SQL query against the volume_table table to see a listing of all the rows.
Note the values of the "id" column for your "thehive" volume and the "P:" volume.
Run a SQL query against the media_table table to update the value of the volume_id column, replacing all instances of the "thehive" id number with the id number of your "P:" drive. The SQL query will look something like this:
    Update media_table
        set volume_id = "<your new value>"
            where volume_id = "<your old value>"
I've tested this with PSE9.0.3 on Win7, changing the location from a CD on my E: drive to a USB stick on my F: drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Best way to manage photos, multiple computers, multiple input mediums

I have a multitude of questions regarding photo library. I have a bit of a mess on my hands.
i have 30K photos on one computer at home (24'imac) and my husband and I both have laptops (macbook pro). I have his "hand me downs". When we switched to the 24"imac (from the small imac), I noticed later (I was not here at home for several months) that it seemed that pictures from my canon library from several years ago seemed to be missing. The person who did the changeover (of course) pleaded ignorance and I believe didn't do a proper backup. In fact I have noticed pictures on my husband's or my laptop, I don't see on our "now" primary machine. I reloaded any CD's i had, however, now i have multitude of picture copies as the "CD created" copy now has another name with a completely different date and year! Further, my husband would take his computer with him on vacation and download photos and sometimes i am not sure all the photos made it to the main computer! So i have these separate libraries on separate computers!
One of my projects in the upcoming year is to consolidate all these libraries so I ensure i have one final version and then set out to reduce, edit these photos, make slide shows, etc with them instead of holding all or most photos on each! It was a learning experience for me as i recently made my first book and found out that i used only 30% of the photos (of 1500 photos) so i think i really need to do a much better editing job to effectively reduce the number of photos. I would also like to even scan my current paper photos, slides, negatives into this, hence creating a large library, slide show, books, etc. In fact I would like to eliminate most of my photo albums!
My thought is that i need to
    1) consolidate all libraries from all computers into one library on one hard disk
    2) divide libraries by year
    3) OBVIOUSLY---backup the library(s)
    4) reload or keep on the 1TB hard drive all the photos
    5) create an additional backup
I hope this makes sense. I am just not sure how to go about it. Given all I have read about error messages and libraries gone missing, I am concerned about the process I use to do this. Thanks!

The best way is create one Library from several is to use iPhoto Library Manager and its' merge command.
Why do you want to have multiple Libraries? iPhoto is good for 250,000 in a Library.
However, if you do want toL Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager
As for scanning? WHat software comes with your Scanner? I have had perfectly acceptable results with Image Capture.
I am concerned given all that i have read about "missing" iphoto libraries and errors.
I'm not sure what you mean by this, but it is important to have a back up as protection against problems.
    Regards
    TD

  • If photos are in more than one album or event are they taking up twice as much disk space?  is there a way to eliminate all duplicates without doing it one by one?

If photos are inmore than one album or event are they taking up twice as much disk space?
Is there a way to eliminate duplicates without doing it one by one?

A photo exists in only one event.  However, it can be in multiple albums, slideshows, books, etc. without taking up any additional disk space.
If you truly have duplicates in iPhoto, not as viewed via the Finder  you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only diplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have diffferent file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • What is the best way to re-install Windows XP in Boot Camp?

I installed Windows XP on my Boot Camp partition on my MacBook for several months. Recently I have had serious problems with Windows Explorer (If I right click or try to copy, delete, drag files, it crashes). I've decided to just to do a clean install of XP and start over. What is the best way to do this?
I realize that I can just remove the partition through Boot Camp assistant, but I have read people on the web have had some issues doing this. I've read that to Erase and reformat the Windows partition" is easier to do.
There is also something called "Perform a Repair Installation" inside Windows XP. This would be preferable because I think this would allow all my applications to stay present. I don't have problems with my applications, just Explorer. Can I do this inside my Windows partition as if it were a normal Windows computer? This would be the best solution if it's possible.

    Axel,
Unfortunately System Restore didn't work. I tried a few dates, but what happened is it said it couldn't restore and that my computer remained unchanged. So I will move on to the next stage. Reinstall Boot Camp drivers (I don't think that will help because they've worked flawlessly for so long) and then do a REPAIR WINDOWS.
But I am going to wait until the weekend when I don't have work and can make sure I have a full backup, plus numerous other things, like doing uninstalls on some programs so that I can reinstall them should I end up with a totally complete new installation.
My experience with Windows over the decades is that a lot of their utilities don't work as promised. That's what just happened with System Restore. So if I have a problem with REPAIR WINDOWS, do I just format my windows drive within Windows and reinstall, or what? Do I have to go back to OS X, eliminate the Windows partition, and start at the beginning with a new BootCamp and Windows installation? I'm asking, because once I get started I want to have a full road map.
Also to clarify, this is with my MacBook. I have no problems with Windows on my Mac Pro.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Best way to manage 8i and 9i databases?

    Hi,
I'm looking for the best way to manage 8i, 9i, 10g and 11g databases with EM (of course, upgrading the 8i databases is not an option). I successfully installed OMS 12c, but the 12.1 agent will not connect to the 8i databases. What are the alternatives?
-The 10g agent can manage 8i, but will it be able to connect to 12.1 OMS?
-If this doesn't work, I guess I would need a 12.1 OMS for 9i, 10g and 11g databases, and a 10g OMS for the 8i databases. Is this a viable solution? Can 10g and 12.1 OMS coexist within the same environment?
I'm looking for the best scenario that actually works, I understand that anything that connects to 8i will not be supported.
    Thanks.

    Hi.
I'm afraid you got it right.
Let's distinguish between MONITORING- which is done by the agent and MANAGEMENT (administration, maintenance, performance management etc) - which is done directly from the OMS.
    According to my experience:
OEM 10G is the last version that can fully MANAGE 8i databases.
OEM 11G can MONITOR 8i databases (via a 10G agent) but cannot MANAGE them (or in other words ,the 11G OMS cannot connect to 8i databases).
OEM 12C cannot MONITOR nor MANAGE 8i databases.
If you use OEM to fully manage your 8i databases (and plan to continue doing so) I suggest you keep a dedicated OEM 10G installation for those databases.
There's no problem using 2 different OMS installations and many organizations choose to do so for various reasons.
The downsides are that you'll need to duplicate your OEM configurations (monitoring templates, rules etc) and of course- you won't be able to manage all databases in a single console...
If you use OEM to only monitor the 8i databases, you can create a set of user defined metrics that will run against a 9i database and will connect to the 8i databases via DB Link.
This solution is far from ideal but it might eliminate the need for maintaining another OMS installation if all you need is monitoring the 8i databases.
    Erez.

  • Best Way to Aggregate Multiple Announcement Apps and Possibly External RSS Feed

    Hello,
I have two separate announcement apps (one in sub-site A, and one is sub-site B). I am trying to create a webpart that will display content from both apps together.
I have tried to setup a CSWP and have been able to set the query to pull in the data (Although it shows expired announcements, which I would need to eliminate). Now, I am trying to customize the display of the CSWP, including the property mapping values
to display the announcement title (currently working with the URL as a link) and body (truncated like the announcement summary view if possible).
How can I get the body from the announcement to display? The 'body' field isn't listed as an option in the drop down list of mapping values. Do I need to toggle an option on the separate announcement apps, create a column, map a field, or some combination?
Also, I'd like to know if it is possible to add in an external RSS feed. Or, if there is a completely different way to approach and accomplish this, please let me know.
    Thank you

    Hi,
To display the “Body” field of Announcements list properly in Content Search Web Part, you can take a look at this blog about how to customize the display template for a good

  • Best way to do a 4:3 pan & scan in terms of resolution?

    Brethren,
I need to deliver a broadcast quality version of my project in 4:3 pan-and-scan. The project is made up of five 20 minute long pieces, usually holding about 1 or 2 layers of video, sometimes 3 or 4.
I've read a few other threads on this topic but I don't know that these solutions are ideal. Here are the possible methods I can imagine:
option a) apply a matte to each clip in the entire project
option b) change the overall settings of the project to ____?_____
option c) export the movie to a quicktime file and re-import it and then alter the settings
option d) take the entire timeline and "nest" it back into a new timeline and apply a single overall matte to that new nested timeline
    *MAIN QUESTION*
*Which method is the best way to whittle things down to 4:3 and yet preserve image quality? I'm concerned that some of these strategies present issues of resolution loss. I want to avoid as much loss as possible. Is there a good method that I may have missed on my list?*
    *SECONDARY QUESTION*
*Although I won't be "panning" too many clips, there will be a few clips that need to be scooted right or left. In such cases, what is the best method of "panning" while preserving image quality? (I think option "D" is unusable here because you can't pan individually if you've applied the matte to the whole enchilada.)*
    MY SPECS
--The project exclusively uses footage from the Sony EX-1, shot at 24p, true 16:9.
--I edited the project using the XDCAM 1080p 24 VBR 35mbs codec. But I exported it to QuickTime using the ProRes 422 (HQ) codec. The resultant exported QuickTime files are 25 gigs each, which is a bit too bulky for my system's 16gigs of RAM to re-import and re-tinker.
    thanks so much,
    Shanked

    A couple of things -
    • it makes no sense to go to ProResHQ with your source material. It is way overkill. ProRes standard would have been plenty and would have much more reasonable data rates
    • your work flow "bulky" problems have nothing to do with the RAM in the machine and everything to do with disk through put. If you are having hesitation issues, see the comment above re ProResHQ.
    • Why did you shoot 24p if you knew you were headed to broadcast?
I need to deliver a broadcast quality version of my project in 4:3 pan-and-scan.
What format/codec is the broadcaster requesting? Does it need to be delivered on tape?
These are the issues that your solution will need to address -
generating a broadcast 4:3 version, you'll need to:
    a) reduce the resolution to 720x486
    b) allow for some image location manipulation while cropping the sides
    c) add pull down to generate a 29.97 frame rate
If you didn't want to move the image around, the easiest way to do this would have been to simply drop the exported version of each segment of your project into Compressor and let Compressor do everything in one step and in a batch process. With the MacPro set up to run as a quick cluster, Qmaster will allow Compressor to access all cores of the machine and will speed the process along markedly.
Given the need to manipulate image position, you'll need an additional step before the files land in Compressor.
Create a duplicate sequence for each segment and, with the 4:3 ratio crop marks on the screen, manipulate the image locations as nec to maintain framing. Then export a reference version using current settings. (You could do this as a nest as well. I tend to stay away from nests as they can lead to other hard to trace down problems.)
Open up Compressor, bring in the manipulated files, apply the ProRes (standard quality) 720x486 preset, make sure frame controls are on better or best to smooth out the resizing and retiming. Frame controls gives you access to optical flow technology which will do a much better job than FCP alone can generate. Please note: You'll want to run some time vs quality tests. Frame controls set to "best" will dramatically increase rendering times.
Then launch the whole shebang as a batch process and let it run.
If you have something like a Kona 3 and you need to deliver on tape, the card will do the down conversion and add the pull down on the fly on playout to tape. This eliminates the whole Compressor step.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to "page" through data?

If I have a XM, something like
    <people>
    <person>
    <firstname>john</firstname>
    <lastname>smith</lastname>
    </person>
    <person>
    <firstname>robert</firstname>
    <lastname>walker</lastname>
    </person>
    </people>
And I create some bound fields to display this, what's the best way to "page" the data?
I know I can create an XML variable of the data and then access person[0].firstname, but I need to have a button or other ui element that would choose person 0,1,2,3 etc.
Normally I's use a list, but this application calls for a static screen where only the data changes when buttons are chosen.

I use this method(this is simplified) as it doesn't require any sort of data services, you can have change events etc for editing/deleteing. the slider is just for poc, a prev/next button could just as easily do.
