Best way to get an .avi file out of a Final Cut Project

Should I export it from the Timeline as an .avi, if so what compressor and settings should I use?
Should I export it as a Quicktime movie and convert it to .avi from MPeg Streamclip, if so, what compressor and settings should I use for best effect?
(note: I have tried one of each, for some reason the Streamclip one came without audio and the one I exported from FCP turned out really pixillated with poor quality.)
Big thanks for any help

Use Export from within fcp>QuickTime conversion.
Choose Windows Media from the format.
Configure from there.
Most likely the standard settings will be good enough - watch the size choice tho' - if you want web sized stuff you have to tell it.
Otherwise it'll give you web compression on your full frame size. You might not want that ..

I have a project that crashed on me when I was about to finish it. When I try to reopen Final Cut Pro it wouldn't open until I took the project out of the Final Cut Project folder. Can somebody tell me if this is a problem that has a solution? I cannot go back to the project at all.

If you are using 10.0.3 or above Apple added a backups folder that for a little extra protection in cases like this. If you quite FCPX go to your Final Cut Pro Projects folder. Find the folder that has the project in question. If it has a backups folder there should be a file with a date stamp and .fcpproject extention, that is your back-up. Just move the back-up from that folder one folder up to the place where you deleted CurrentVersion.fcpproject from.  When I have had to do this I haven't renamed the backup but some people to recomend that you rename it to CurrentVersion.fcpproject and it seems to work both ways. Ofcourse it wont work if there is already a CurrenVersion file there you will need to delete that one first.
If you don't have the backups folder or there is nothing in it I am not sure if there is anything that can be done.

  • The best way to get 5.1 sound out of Mac Pro

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but could someone recommend me the best way to get 5.1 sound of a Mac Pro. Since I don't require hi-fi -level sound, just simple directional audio for gaming and such, I wouldn't like to pour a lot of money to this. As I see it, I'd need an external sound card, internal PCI-E soundcard or speakers that have an optical input. I would like for the cost to be in two digits, euro or dollar.
    Any suggestions about hardware?

Once again, the issue of 5.1 w/Apple comes up.
    Here is the bottom line.
You will only get 5.1 audio if the following conditions are true:
    - You are using the OPTICAL output on your Mac
    - You are playing a DVD with a 5.1 soundtrack
That's it. The simple truth is, that even if you have a Z-5500 setup (like I do), you still will not get 5.1 surround in ///any/// applications other then while playing a DVD.
There is no way to get 5.1 out of a game on a Mac Pro. No matter how much money you throw at it. The support simply is not there. It is not a software issue, it is not a driver issue. It is the game developer's issue (sort of), and it is a //lack of hardware// issue.
The complex truth, and I will attempt to explain, isn't that simple.
Your Mac Pro or Macbook only has a single line-out, that supports 2 channels at the maximum. Optical audio will only handle 2 channels as well- it's the same signal (in two channels) on a different medium, basically.
All PC soundcards that support proper 5.1 (save for a select few) have //multiple// line-out jacks for Front Left/Right, Center/Sub, and Rear Left/Right (3 plugs total for 5.1). Since your Mac/Mac Pro doesn't have this, you can't hook up a 5.1 speaker set and expect true 5.1.
You do have optical audio, however, this only works in 5.1 when a Dolby Digital signal is piped through the optical cable.
Dolby Digital works by encoding a 5.1 signal as a data stream, sending it to a receiver, where it is decoded and played back as 5.1 stereo. DVD's have this audio pre-encoded on the disk.
If you wanted 5.1 output from your games, they'd need to ether have the sound/audio data encoded as Dolby 5.1, or support encoding on the fly to take a 5.1 signal, encode it, and pipe it out the optical audio plug. Xbox360 does this, because they've licensed the technology from Dolby- as have the game developers.
Unfortunately, none of the developers for Macintosh gaming have yet to include live Dolby 5.1 encoding (I think Doom 3 had a beta patch that did- I could be wrong).
If the game doesn't support the above feature, then you only get basic 2 channel audio.
*Do not buy a Fireface 800.*
This is a professional audio interface (like an external soundcard). While it supports 5.1 output via 6 individual outputs, you need SPEAKERS that have +built in amplifiers+ (called a Studio Monitor). Not just one amplifier- all the speakers have it built in and take a balanced stereo input.
You're looking at $1300 for the Fireface 800, and another $200 per speaker. This is not cheap, is not meant for gaming, and is not consumer grade equipment. It's pro audio, designed for Logic 8 and similar.
Even if you did spend the money, trust me, I'd know... I have a 5.1 setup running through an Apogee Ensemble (a $2000 "soundcard"), and I do not get 5.1 support from Quake 4, C&C 3, or any other game. I only get 5.1 surround from my audio production in Logic 8.
To recap, since this has been asked many times- and I don't want you wasting your money here (just trying to be helpful!)...
*There is no simple or cost-efficient way to get 5.1 from your Mac, other then while playing a DVD movie.*
I would highly recommend that you buy a very good pair of 2.1 speakers with a Sub woofer. Maybe even a pair that takes an optical input for audio. If you really want to spend the money to *watch a DVD in surround sound,* then you can... And it'll work wonderfully, but gaming will not give you surround sound at all.
*Again- There are no games out that support 5.1. Just because you technically support Dolby 5.1, doesn't mean the applications are aware of it and can utilize the 5.1 surround.*
Edit: I may have neglected to also mention that the Firewave unit will support 5.1 properly through 3 separate plugs (much like a PC soundcard does), however the only game I am aware of that supports this is Unreal Tournament 2003 for Mac (or was it 04?), with an experimental patch for 5.1 via OpenAL. Last I heard, it worked okay, but crashed occasionally.
Most of the other games out there just don't support 5.1, period (probably due to the lack of hardware on the Mac computers from the factory).

  • What is the best way to work with avi-files?

    Hallo all,
I'm new to this forum so before asking my question I'd like to say some words about myself:
I'm not a native english speaker, so please excuse language mistakes I'll possibly make and feel free to ask if I'll write something which you don't understand due to this fact.
Half year ago I bought a HD Cam from Canon (Legria HF 200) which - in my opinion - has a good quality (good enough for my hobby films), and realized that cutting HD films on Windows would require a lot of expensive high end hardware. So I bought a MacBook and Final Cut Express - a decision I'm very happy with.
After the first disastrous tries to make a small clip I bought Tom Wolsky's "Editorial Workshop for FCE" and now I'm more happy than I was before (because I've seen that you're posting here: thanks for the great book!)
    But now to my question:
I have 9 old PAL DV tapes (containing family clips which I'd like to cut now) recorded with my old JVC, which has a FireWire port only. Unfortunately my MacBook doesn't have such, so I have to capture to DV avi using a PC with Pinnacle Studio.
1.) The avi files are very large (between 13 - 18 GB). Because I'm not able to recapture due to the missing FireWire port I'd like to archive the material on an HDD. How should I convert the AVI to make it smaller without a great loss of quality but keeping the ability to use it in FCE (especially when reconnecting after creating the subclips from the original)
2.) I'd like to keep the whole captured tape content as master clip and work with subclips from it. Yesterday I converted such an AVI to Film using QuickTime (the size didn't change noticable) and used the DV-Start/Stop detection. Unfortunately that didn't work correctly - some of the markers have been set in the middle of the shots instead as expected exactly between them. Should I do this on the original AVI file to make it work? And if, is it possible to reconnect the subclips created this way to a MOV created from the original AVI?
3.) On the PC I get an xml file containing the correct position data of the subclips (as timecode, if I remember correctly). Is it possibly, to use this data in FCE to mark subclips? Maybe by putting it manually into an xml project file or something similar?
4.) Or is there any other way to solve my problem?
Sorry for the big post and thanks in advance,
    André

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André

  • Easiest way to get my .avi file to a dvd!!!

I have a .avi file i need to put on DVD> I have imovie, idvd, a superdrive, etc.
what is the simplest way to do this? I don't need any menus or titles or anything, just want to pop the dvd in and have the file start playing.
    thanks in advance!
btw, i have quicktime pro, so if I need to convert the file to another format first, I can do it through there.

Use "OneStep DVD from Movie" from iDVD's "File" menu.

How do I import or use an AVI file with Final Cut Express?
Thank you. Do I need to convert my AVI file and what is the

You should convert the media to QuickTime. Without knowing any specifics most likely the simplest way is to use MPEG Streamclip.

  • Best way to show a "kiosk type" video done with final cut pro. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Was hoping to get some pro opinions (no pun intended) on the best way to send my edited final cut vid (png format for super clear text) to 32 inch monitors that will play them in the "store". We have 4 tvs, and they all need to show the video, and the sound (music) accompanying the video. The video is around 8 hours long (bunch of edited video clips to music) and will have to loop somehow. It's much too long for a dvd, as I want to keep the quality primo, so I was considering either a video ipod, or an actual computer. Just the ipod is so mall and frail (lol not really but around the people I work with it would be), and a computer might be overkill. Any ideas or opinions would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • What is the best way to capture off of an AVCHD Camera in final cut?

Im kinda new to final cut pro so, please don't flame me. I was hoping to capture some extra footage on to my system through my AVCHD camcorder. And i want to know the best way to do so? Thanks for the answers.

I was not successful using mpegstreamclip for this. However, I found VoltaicHD from ShedWorx and it works great. Simply load all the clips you want to convert, assign a location and walk away. The result is beautiful HD .movs ready to be imported into FCP. I paid about $35 for it and it was well worth it.

  • Best way to work with AVI

    Hi there,
I am expecting a bunch of Super 8 mm transfert that will be in the AVI format.
What is the best way to import the AVI files into FCP in order to get the best quality and edit them ?
    Thanks in advance
    Ivan

While ProRes422 HQ is likely more bits than you need, it does make sense to have the original material converted to this format rather than something else that you will then transcode.
It will do you no harm and possibly some good to get the original converted to prores.

  • Best way to deal with AVI clips taken with stills cam?

we have a nikon S70 consumer camera which also takes video clips; these clips are .AVI format.
I thought it would be smart to convert them to QT format, but a 1.5GB clip became a 38-GB monster!
What would be the best way to get these .avi clips into my FC Studio workflow so that I can edit, color correct, etc., so that I can burn them to DVD?
this little cam offers several video formats, like HD (720) and a couple of formats it calls "TV" which appear to be 640x480...at least some of them are those dims.
    thanks!
    rc

Like the ubiquitous QuickTime .mov file type, AVI is just a wrapper or container; the video contained within could be made from any number of codecs.
Convert the AVI files to the codec that will match your FCP Sequence settings - prior to importing it into your FCP project.

  • Whats the best way to get a big text file in a CLOB variable?

    Hi,
I have a very premitive type of question.
I have a big text file, say 30 MB, in a Unix directory (Solaris). I want to get the whole text of that file in a CLOB variable.
I saw the procedure dbms_lob.loadfromfile/loadclobfromfile. In both these cases, according to the documentation, the target where is collect the data will be a BLOB and not a CLOB. So, I have to convert that blob into a clob.
If I want to avoid all this conversion process, whats the best way to get a text from a file into a CLOB variable?
    Please suggest.
    Regards

In addition, LoadFromFile is overloaded to handle both BLOB and CLOB:

  • What is the best way to get PATHS from one Photoshop psd file to another?

Hi! New on the site, and I signed up specifically to ask the best way to import one .psd file into another, including the paths on the paths palette.
Almost all of my Photoshop drawings make heavy use of vector paths, which I then stroke using using PS natural-media brushes and the "stroke paths" function (usually with "simulate pressure" checked.) Also, my .psd files tend to be, um, HUGE... and I typically break up a whole drawing into separate PS files and then assemble all of them into one final finished graphic.
I have no trouble moving raster stuff from file to file. Just put all the layers I want to transfer into a group and drag the group to the other .psd. Works fine, including layer masks. But I have not found a good way to get vector paths from the Paths palette of one .psd to another. Of course I can select paths and copy them to the Win clipboard, switch to the other .psd, and paste them back in. The drawback to that method is that I lose the correct size relation between the results of previously done "stroke paths" operations (on raster layers) and the paths that generated them. Sometimes the copied-in paths are way too large, sometimes way too small, never Just Right.
As I'm sure most of you know, if you resize an entire Photoshop document from within PS, any paths it contains are correctly resized along with everything else. That's no longer true after grouped raster layers are dragged over to another document but paths are copied and pasted in. The size connection is lost. (Location placement, too.)
I WANT those paths! After I bring a piece of a drawing into the full final drawing, what looked good when I was working on it separately often doesn't look right any longer and I want to re-stroke those paths using different brush diameter, opacity, etc., or maybe even a completely different brush.
I've tried bring outside .psd files in as smart objects with the Place command but either that doesn't work or I'm not doing it right. Using Place, the paths in the Placed document don't come in at all.
I'll be very grateful for any hints or strategies any of you knowledgeable folks can give me. Thanks very much!
    Jim

    1. Connect the two macs - firewire, ethernet, sneakernet as suits you - and copy the iPhoto Library Folder from Old Machine to New Machine. Drag it from Home/Pictures to the same location on the new machine.
    2. Because all the files 'belong' to the account on the old machine, you have to update the file permissions: hence Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png
(Credit to Old Toad for this one).
Note: This must be run on the new machine after copying the files over.
    3. Then launch iPhoto on the new machine.

  • I am moving from Southern California to Maui, Hawaii and I need to figure out the best way to get my 24 inch iMac across the ocean. Does anyone know the best way to do this?

I am moving from Southern California to Maui, Hawaii and I need to figure out the best way to get my 24 inch iMac across the ocean. Does anyone know the best way to do this? I have found GearGrip's LCD harness so that I can do carry-on onto the plane...  Or maybe use a Pelican Case to do it as a "checked bag"? Or any other suggestions??! Please help!
    Thanks so much!!

I don't recommend you send the iMac in a checked bag. Might get damaged.
Check the airlines website for carry on guidelines.
Or, if you have the original box that the iMac came in, if you have someone who can pick up the iMac for you, send it ahead Fed Ex and insure the package.
Just make sure the display is covered to protect it. A blanket perhaps.

  • Best way to get small file size/best quality- starting from Logic?

I am in the process of embedding 3 mp3's into a PDF to submit as a portfolio. The PDF also has text, and two scores included, and with the 3 embedded mp3's it can't be more than 10mb.
So my question is: When bouncing a project out of Logic, what is the best method for getting the smallest file size, but retaining the best audio quality? And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's. I basically need them to be about 3 mb each. Two of the recordings sound OK at that size, but they are just MIDI(one project is piano and string quartet, the other is just piano- all software instruments. The recording that combines MIDI and Audio and has more tracks (three audio tracks and 10 Midi/software instrument tracks)and sounds completely horrible if I get it under 5 mb as an mp3. The problem is that I need all three to equal around 9mb, but still sound good enough to submit as a portfolio for consideration into a Master's program.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Please be detailed in your response, because I am new to logic and I really need the step by step.
    Thank you...
