Best way to get .mp4 into FCP

My camera captures in an mp4 format that is unreadable by final cut pro. These clips are in 720p. I have played around with visualhub, ffmpegx, and mpeg streamclip trying to find the best setting to convert these clips to a usable format.
Converting to DV downscales the video, but is fairly quick.
Converting to xvid diminshes the quality, but is failry quick.
Converting to quicktime takes forever and produces enormous files.
Converting to mpeg2 or mpeg4 with h.264 works okay, but FCP has a hard time handling these files quickly (ie I can't even use the jog dial)
I have yet to find a setting or format that retains quality, is relatively quick to convert, and plays nicely with FCP. Anyone have any ideas?

mpeg and h264 are delivery formats so that is why they don't work well in FCP. They were never designed to be used that way even though it happens. You best bet is to convert to ProRes. Excellent quality even over a couple of generations, decent bandwidth and file size requirement considering today's cheap and large hard drives. But if you still thing it's too large or too time consuming then I would say welcome to HD video. It's not as quick and easy as DV. If ProRes is too much then try DVCPRO HD. Smaller files, less bandwidth.

  • Panasonic HMC150-Best Way To Get Footage Into FCS2, etc.

    I've just ordered a new Panasonic AG-HMC150, to replace a Sony V1U.
A couple of questions while I'm waiting for it to get here: First, for anyone using this camera with FCS2, what's the best way to import footage? Should I connect the camera with the SDHC card mounted to the Mac via USB, and then use Log and Transfer? Or, is it better to use a separate SDHC card reader? Also, is it better to copy the files off of the card to an external HD first, and then use Log and Transfer?
Finally, in another forum I read that shooting in 720p (30 or 60?) yields better looking SD DVDs after using Compressor than 1080i; does anyone have any experience with this?
My current workflow is to shoot in 1080i with my V1U, capture to Pro Res, edit, and export with Compressor. For a 1 hour SD DVD, around 12-15 hours in Compressor (using the frame controls)
    would be required.
I'm not concerned about any speed increases; my goal is just to have the best looking letterboxed SD DVDs I can get. Thanks in advance for any advice anyone might have. And to Shane, David S., and others: thanks for helping me choose a new camera--it seems to be highly recommended everywhere.

    1. My practice is to copy the intact SDHC card to my media drive, and L/T from there. I copy is by write protecting the SDHC card first, and then mounting it with a SDHC compatible card reader.
    2. 720 is the sweet spot for this cam. I shot 720/60 and usually encoded from there.
    Hope this helps.
Note: Always format the card in the cam first. ALWAYS

  • Legacy Trial Balance - best way to get totals into SAP

    Hi Folks,
I have a query relating to the data migration of Finance items.
What is the best process for updating the new SAP system with the legacy trial balance?
Do you journal in the Opening Trial Balance posting sub ledger items to a Data Load account?
Load the AR / AP sub ledger items via the standard load routine RFBIBL00 which will in the case of customers Debit the customer account and Credit the Data Load Account / Vendors Credit the Vendor and Debit the Data Load Account.
Could anyone please give me a step by step guide as to how to go about this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The upload of GL Balances have to split into several steps:
    1. Normal GL Accounts: In this case line items are not required and totals are to be updated in SAP. This can be done using GL fast entry if the number is not too high.
    2. Open Item Managed GL Accounts: All the open line items are required to be uploaded in SAP from Legacy in order to clear them. Hence, a LSMW / BDC program has to be developed to upload the line items.
    3. Customer & Vendor Open Items: All open line items in Customer and Vendor Accounts have to be brought in into SAP. For this also a LSMW / BDC program needs to be developed and upload the line items.
    4. Asset Accounting: In case asset accounting is implemented the individual balances of each asset (Gross Value and Accumulated Depreciation) have to be uploaded using transaction AS91. For this also you need to develop a LSMW / BDC program. Further, you also need to update the GL Accounts related to Asset Accounts with totals for each asset class T.Code OASV.
    5. Further, material values are also to be updated - Material wise and this should tie with the GL Balance.
In addition, one more point to be noted is the use of Dummy / Conversion accounts for bringing in data from legacy to SAP. It is better to create five or six conversion accounts like for Assets, Liabilities, Revenue, Expenses, Materials etc. The sum of all these conversion accounts should be ZERO after completing the conversion. This way the reconciliation will become easy.
    Thanks

  • What is best way to get video into my iMac for recording?

I have a HD camera that outputs both HDMI and Component Analog video. What do I need to be able to get one of these signals into my iMac so I can record/edit it?

What kind of media does it record to? iMovie will import many types of media and formats. I would be using the video from the media if possible not the Video output sigal.

  • Best way to get text into li elements

Originally I was using CSS to add text over a background in
position. In IE7 it went haywire. I put the elements in an UL as LI
but now I don't know how to get the text in there. I'm sure I'm

You can't do it this way at all. What will happen when the
    text is resized?
    Blammo.
I'd make three divs, each with three images: an image slice
    for the top and
bottom of the box, and a third as a repeating background for
    the middle.
You can see a good and simple example of this here -
    http://www.murraytestsite.com/shadow.html.
It shows how to use those three
    images.

  • Best way to get DVD into Front Row?

I have a some non-copyrighted DVD's that I would like to get into Front Row without losing the image quality.
    Any suggestions?

I just found a used hi8 camcorder locally with a dv connection so would I be better off
1)transferring 8mm cassettes into imovie as dv
    or
    2) transferring 8 mm cassettes to my standalone dvd recorder and then ripping them on mac, i have done this with one and takes about 2 hours to rip and encode however when dragging the mov file after dvd conversion into imovie I am getting a reading that it will take up to a day to import into imovie.
I know doing dv to mac is easier then #2 but this will cost me money since I would have to buy this 8mm recorder with a dv connection, will there be a difference of quality.
My goal in the end is to have these 15 home movies that are on 8mm tapes on an ext hd edited and as big as possible or good as possible in quality, then I would probably do more serious edits to them and save as smaller files for viewing either via front row or maybe even burning to dvds.

  • When I'm done with my fcp sequence, whats the best way to get it to dvd?

When I'm done with my fcp sequence, whats the best way to get it to dvd?

The advice to go to Compressor left out the part that you may want to convert your audio to AC3 becaus ethe MPEG2 bitrate is probably too high for DVD specs.
This method is in the DVDSP manual and it's in the Compressor manual, both difficult to locate, but easily searchable.
Here's what I'd do: Export the timeline form FCP in the native sequence settings, self-contained. Bring that self-contained movie into DVDSP and let DVDSP handle the transcode.
The advice to go to iDVD is even easier.

  • What is the best way to get a tune created in GB for iPad into iMovie for iPad?

What is the best way to get a tune created in GB for iPad into iMovie for iPad?

Haven't done it myself, but seems like the correct workflow would be:
From GarageBand (iOS), My Songs -> select song -> Send to iTunes
From iMovie HD (iOS), My Project -> Insert Media -> select by song name
I'm not sure if GB creates its own playlist for tagging exported songs in your iTunes library so selecting by name would be the next-best method.
    Have you tried this?

  • I burned a playlist to a data CD using itunes 11 but what is best way to get it import it into another computer with itunes running?

I burned a playlist to a data CD using itunes 11 but what is best way to get it import it into another computer with itunes running?  I get an "X" when trying to copy to the "automatically add to itunes" folder on the 2nd computer.

ok... so i i just made sure all my music is all together in 1 folder and i am going to trash my old music folder that is in the itunes folder... and follow your directions - let itunes start w/new library and bring my music in. Well, last little hurdle/question. I noticed that the place where my itunes library is - on an external drive doesnt have much space left on it. The place where i gathered all my music together in order to start fresh - is a different external drive and has LOTS of free space on it.
SO... i now would like to just keep all that freshly compiled clean music right where it is but in advanced preferences I want to point to that new folder on the drive that has so much more space. So... should i delete the old music then go into itunes with a blank library and change the folder in preferences - quit and go back in and then follow your steps to loading my music? If i change the setting of where itunes looks for the music - that doesn't wipe out the old stuff... it just mixes it all up together right? I dont want that!!
i promise this is the last question - i would love to fix this problem tonight and just be DONE!
Thanks in advance for your patience and knowledge!!

  • Best way to get photos from windows explorer into PSE 11

Old story.  Computer crashed.  I re-installed PSE 11. All of the photos are back in My Pictures.  What is the best way to get all of the photos back into PSE 11.  Thanks for your help.  I really appreciate it.

There is a direct option in Organizer which lets you import from iPhoto. This is under Import dropdown menu in left panel.
If you are importing from iPhoto'09, your Tags, Albums Events, captions, star rating would also get imported apart from your media. This works differently for iPhoto'011 where you can get only the media to the Organizer,
Just a couple of things to know:
    1. If in iPhoto preferences, you have chosen to create copies of your photos in iPhoto library and your library hence refers to the media store inside the library package, then on importing from iPhoto, Organizer would create copies of all those media under your pictures folder. That means, it would not corrupt your iPhoto package or modify it in any way.
    2. However, if in iPhoto, you are organizing by using references to original location on your Hard drive i.e. you are not creating copies of media in iPhoto library then on importing from iPhoto to Organizer, the Organizer would also use the same references and would not create copies of the media.
    Hope that helps!

  • Best way to get quality DVD

I just finished a short (7-min) video, mostly of hi-res still images. What is the best way to get this thing onto DVD and looking it's best?
    Thank you!

I have done a couple DVD's of a 2 hour long video of a three camera shoot and they came out pretty good... so this is how I did it.
I am assuming your project settings are for DV/NTSC. That being the case, I simply used the Export QuickTime Movie feature in the file menu. When the prompt comes up, it should default to Current Settings on the "Settings" drop down menu. Click ok, and voila, you will have a .mov movie file of your sequence in DV/NTSC specs. Also, I should add, that if you are setting up chapter markers in FCP, select which markers you would like to use in the appropriate drop down menu.
From here, just import the .mov file into iDVD or DVD Studio Pro and make the DVD. I have used both DVD authoring programs, and they both come out looking great.
If you want to go HD, or maybe convert to PAL format, or whatever, just select the setting you want in the prompt box for Export QuickTime Movie in FCP.
It has worked for me so far and the DVD's look great. Hope this helps.
    Good Luck!

  • Starting Fresh With iTunes 9.0.1...best way to get music back in/import?

Had some library troubles with iTunes 9, and decided to do a clean install of not only the program, but of Snow Leopard itself. I was waiting on an iTunes update to come out before I decided to re-load my library in, since I didn't want to risk repeat problems (I've always been one of those bleeding edge-ers, and this is the 1st time I've ever had a problem/held back...guess I learned my lesson). 9.0.1 is out and seems to address the problems I'd been having, but I caught the "start fresh" bug and I want to start over with iTunes. No playlists, play counts, etc need to be saved.
I do have a full backup of my previous system (thanks SuperDuper!), and I'm wondering what the best way to get all of my music back into iTunes is.
-Do I use the Finder to simply drag the contents of my old "iTunes Music" folder into the new "iTunes Media" folder?
-Do I drag the whole folder and drop it onto the iTunes window? (I'm worried this method won't put iPhone apps, ringtones, audiobooks and podcasts in the right place).
-Do I use the import function?
Notes: prior to making the backup, I did upgrade to/select iTunes Media Organization
I did see THIS article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 but it says it's old and I wonder if it applies to iTunes 9.
    Thanks for any help!

You might want to check that your certificate that you made has been applied to iTunes.app
    try this code in Terminal"
    codesign -dvvvv /Application/iTunes.app
Does the name on the certificate match the one you created?

  • Whats the best way to get a big text file in a CLOB variable?

    Hi,
I have a very premitive type of question.
I have a big text file, say 30 MB, in a Unix directory (Solaris). I want to get the whole text of that file in a CLOB variable.
I saw the procedure dbms_lob.loadfromfile/loadclobfromfile. In both these cases, according to the documentation, the target where is collect the data will be a BLOB and not a CLOB. So, I have to convert that blob into a clob.
If I want to avoid all this conversion process, whats the best way to get a text from a file into a CLOB variable?
    Please suggest.
    Regards

In addition, LoadFromFile is overloaded to handle both BLOB and CLOB:
    PROCEDURE LOADFROMFILE
    Argument Name                  Type                    In/Out Default?
    DEST_LOB                       BLOB                    IN/OUT
    SRC_LOB                        BINARY FILE LOB         IN
    AMOUNT                         NUMBER(38)              IN
    DEST_OFFSET                    NUMBER(38)              IN     DEFAULT
    SRC_OFFSET                     NUMBER(38)              IN     DEFAULT
    <BR>
    PROCEDURE LOADFROMFILE
    Argument Name                  Type                    In/Out Default?
    DEST_LOB                       CLOB                    IN/OUT
    SRC_LOB                        BINARY FILE LOB         IN
    AMOUNT                         NUMBER(38)              IN
    DEST_OFFSET                    NUMBER(38)              IN     DEFAULT

  • Best way to get LARGE (multi-DVD) project to show on a TV?

My wife has compiled an iMovie '09 project that has about 42 hours worth of dance videos.  The project consists of many clips of all sorts of esoteric dancing, with a brief fade between each one.  It looks fine on her iMac.  She wants to show these videos on a TV at the "Dance Ladies Retreat" that is coming up in a couple months.  Some ideas we've considered are:
Buying her a new MacBook, and moving the iMovie project over via Firewire, Ethernet cable, or similar.  Then taking the MacBook to the event, and hooking it up to the TV via cable.  This method will be very expensive.
Saving the project on a 256 giga-byte USB drive.  First we'd have to get this mondo iMovie project into a format that would work on a PC laptop, which could then be attached to the TV.  Not sure how to get the iMovie project into a PC-readable format.
Break the mondo iMovie project up into DVD-size chunks.  My wife bought Aimersoft DVD Creator, which we may try to use if we decide to split the iMovie project up into a number of DVDs, but I'm not sure if it can merge movie clips.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thank you
    ATB

Geoff: Thank you for your reply!  I downloaded VLC Player and was able to read a DVD's worth of my wife's project that she had copied onto Aimersoft's DVD Creator software.  First I saved the Aimersoft DVD Creator file onto my flash drive, and tried to play it on my PC with Media Player.  No joy.  VLC-Player worked like a champ!
OK, now I need to figure out the next piece of the puzzle, which is the best way to get all of her work onto this single, 256 Gb flash drive that we have on order from Amazon.  The ultimate plan is to store the entire iMovie output onto the 256 Gb flash drive, and play it using my ASUS laptop through an HDMI cable.  Looks like we have two main choices for this:
Copy all of her iMovie project onto DVD Creator, and save these onto the big flash drive.  This has the advantage of breaking her project up into manageable chunks, but will VLC Player be able to play those chunks sequentially?
Stay with iMovie, and "share" her project onto the 256 Gb flash drive.  Maybe first we should split the huge project up into several smaller projects, perhaps 4 hours each.  A couple questions here: what do you think would be the nominal size for breaking up the huge project, and what would be the best option for saving the movie using "share."
Thank you very much.  By the way, I found a nice explanation of the features and uses of iMovie 09 (that's the one we have) at this web site: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/imovie_09_stone.html
    Thank you

  • What is the best way to get rid of unwanted footage permanently

I have to shot for the bin on some projects working without a script. I then can be under considerable time pressure to get something out so don't have time to to review properly during the log and transfer process as I might have multiple projects going on. What is the best way to get rid of the useless footage for good. An example is in iMovie you can mark footage as trash and then empty the trash and it trims the original clip for good, very good for saving hard drive space on the move.
Any ideas how to d this in FCP????
Have thought about the whole media manger thing but must admit to ignoring this aspect so far. Do it by moving selected clips in a project in media manager????
Have googled this to death... Thanks for all your time.
    AP

    Yep,
Media Manager is the way to go.
    Read the manual aout it.
It is all explained in there.
