Best way to go about adding a new, but smaller boot disk

So, after fawning over the new MBP with Retina Display I've decided that I'm not willing (yet) to spend that kind of money on a new MBP.  Instead, I've decided to try to make my existing 15" Mid-2009 MBP peppier.  To that end, I've gone off and purchased a kit to convert the optical drive into a hard drive and also purchased a new 128GB SSD.  The existing internal HD is 500GB.  My plan is to have my OS on the 128GB SSD and keep my data files on the bigger but slower HD.  The devil of course is in the details.
A first question, but by no means the most important since I can experiment to find out, is if it makes better sense to put the SSD in the optical bay converter, or to swap it for the 500GB HD and put *that* in the converter.  I've seen some discussion that suggests that the latter is the better choice, but I'm certainly willing to read what folks have to say.
The second and far more important question, is how should I handle migrating the OS?
One option seems to be to use SuperDuper! which seems to be pretty well suited to the purpose.  It has a mode (sandbox - shared users) that will copy all by the user files to another drive and will even select it as the boot drive when it is done if you like.  This would move the OS and all the applications to the SSD while keeping my big honking home directory on the 500GB HD.
Another option would be to do a fresh install of Mountain Lion to the SSD and use the Migration Assistant to pull my settings in.  As I recall, I can choose exactly which bits I migrate in... it isn't clear to me that it is quite intended to be used for moving to a two drive setup though.  I'd be less sure this would result in what I'm after.
But then I started thinking about things like the Recovery HD partition and the EFI partition.  Both are hidden, even to Disk Utility. I don't really want to waste space on the SSD for either if I can keep them on the HD.  A fresh install of Mountain Lion on an SSD installed as an internal drive would presumably get both.
I'm currently leaning toward the SuperDuper! route, but I want to hear reasoned opinions.  Thoughts?

You will need to first prep the SSD.
Install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion on the SSD.
Boot from the SSD.
Open Users & Groups and click on the lock icon to authenticate.
Select your SSD user account. CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
Click on the Choose button to the right of the field labeled, "Home directory:".
Navigate to your Home folder on the HDD, select and click on the Open button.
Click on the OK button and restart.
Drive Preparation for Lion/Mountain Lion
1.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your SSD (entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting is done quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
The Lion/Mountain Lion installer will create a Recovery HD on the SSD.

Probably best to create unique Apple ID's for each... this will also make things easier in the future as purchases are eternally tied to the Apple ID they were purchased with.

  • What is the best way to go about getting a wireless connection on the go?

Im new to the aple product. I just recently bought a New Macbook Pro and wanted to know what is the best way to go about connecting to the internet while not at home and on the go. I was thinking of maybe a USB internet stick. But dont know who provides them and who would be the best choose to go with for a nice price every month. If that was the best choose in the first place. Im living in the U.S.A so if you could help ill really apprecaite it. THANKS

Hi! I'm writing in beginning of October so I don't know if you've found a solution.
Your MacBook Pro probably has a WiFi card built in. You don't need to have a USB connector.
Turn on AirPort, go to Network and choose the network that is available to you. It might ask for a password, so get it from the cashier. My MBP connects wherever I go, as long as there is a network available.
    Good luck.

  • I have 21,000  photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive.  What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?

I have 21,000  photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive.  What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?

Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

I have a 15' Macbook Pro, mid 2010 running Mavericks. I want to upgrade the hardware by increasing the RAM to 8GB and replacing the HD for a SDD one. What would be the best way to install mavericks on the new HD? I have the original OS X CD.
From what I read, I have 2 choices: 1. to install OSX and then upgrade to Mavericks, but I'm not sure if this would be possible (to upgrade directly from OSX to Mavericks); and 2. to use a software called Super Duper.
I wouldn't like to have to use a third party software to do this, so the question is: is there a better way to install directly the Mavericks not having to use a third party software?

Install the new drive in the computer.
Install the old drive in an external USB or Firewire enclosure.
Boot the computer from the Recovery HD on the external drive.
Use Disk Utility to partition and format the new internal drive.
Clone your external drive to the internal drive.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the Recovery HD on the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the Recovery HD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Using Disk Utility still opened.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

I have a Macbook Pro and would like to do a complete reformat. I installed Moutain Lion when it came out and do not wish to pay again since I've already paid. I have OS 10.6.4 discs with me which didnt come with my MB but with my previous one. What is the best way to go about it? I have bootcamp and wish to get rid of it (one of the many reasons of wanting to reformat)

You can use the Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Bootcamp Partition  - best way to do it.
If you use the Recovery Disk Assistant to create a recovery usb thumbdrive you can boot to that and repartition the MacHd and reinstall the OS directly.
When you purchase the OS you are free to reinstall without repurchasing as long as yo have access tot he Apple Id you used to make the purchase

  • HT1589 what's the best way to move content to a new library I created ie a holiday music only library?

what's the best way to move content to a new library I created ie a holiday music only library?

    Sophie:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You're only hope to recover the library as it once was is to: 1 - if you have a backup copy of your iPhoto Library or 2 - you can put everything back exactly the way it was in the Finder.
Otherwise you'll have to start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your current library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Should the admin/user folder and all of its sub folders be moved to the hdd or just parts of it? (eg. picture, movies, documents)  What is the best way to go about doing this.  Also should a 2t hdd be partitioned.

Yes, you can move your user directories to the HD and keep your OSX and Applications on the SSD drive.
Whether you partition your HD or not depends on how much data you have and how you propose to use your HD.
Are you planning to use your iMac as a Time Machine backup volume? If so, partition it off.
Do you have huge data files, eg video, music, photos?
How much of your 2tb drive will be "free" once it is loaded with all your data?
A little more information is required before the optimal configuration can be recommended for your use.
