Best way to group/create a large mosaic of film clips?

I created this in Apple Motion and am trying to recreate in AE. It's so super simple really but very beautiful.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI5FKQS3vtw
Short rant: As an actual professional graphic designer (who does occasional video and 3d work) I've more and more realizing Apple doesn't care about working professionals and thier software shows it. I made this clip, and the UI slowly began to degrade and then it wouldn't render certain clips, now it takes 15 minutes just to load the file.
I've tried creating a pre-comp but I'm concerned when I create it, it isn't the best way to accomplish what I need in the end. I just need to create one large mosaic, then have it as one layer so I can zoom in and out of it, create masks with it, etc. I wish there was a way to create one HUGE canvas (108000p LOL) so I can lay everything out exactly how I need it, then plop that into my 1080p project.
Can anyone provide a few ideas / features / directions to research and move forward with?
Thanks so much!

No, unfortunately there is no easy way to do this kind of thing. Creating pre-comps over pre-comps is pretty much way to go.

What is the best way is to create a web app item collection which will contain only the listings where addressstate="ABC".

How many systems have you used Robert?
This is the only system you can not have all item data at least in JSON format and all of it. Big commerce has a lower limit and as I have said in every post related to a limit - I understand the function, but you can still make the requests as just one example (front and back)
    Same with API Robert.
Firstly - the SOAP API request on say products gets you ALL the products, if you do something through a REST API request you can  make the requests to get all the items to complete your process of what your doing - You have to otherwise the API is pointless.
Ok if the normal modules can not iterate through if there is a module_data solution, and web apps will get there hopefully sooner then later and you do have the sql query (where) for your filter which is great BUT, if you want to implement a solution across everything you cant do that with the liquid implementation.
This also flows through to the JSON everywhere in concept which is fundamentally flawed for the same reason... And again referring other like services where a hard API has a limit but the JSON request returns everything.
How those work varies from the method of request, some will only update every day, xxx time (Depending on cost of the plan) so its a cached version of data, to the ones that limit that request to x number of times per set time/day.
That is how the actual rest of the world works, varied solutions but they are solutions. BC know they have a few limitations, there clearly is the need for things, there are a varied set of options... It is just a matter of engaging in it and offering up a solution for it, silence just creates frustration.

  • Best way to dynaically create and call seq or steps

I am trying to create an R&D system which allows for the testing of units over temperature and voltage conditions. I would like the operator to have the ability to randomly select a group test steps from a menu, and select whether to run the groups of tests over any number of temperature and voltage conditions. Each test is a unique VI with a unique connector pane and inputs for the course of the test sequence. Test step inputs are identical from one temp and voltage condition to the next.
The test list fans out such that a test sequence would perform the group of tests N times the number of Temps and M times the number of voltages. I envision creating testsequence from an array?
I need to understand the best way to perform this operation. I've looked in the forums and don't see anything that directly addresses this design challenge. I have explored creating sequences and skipping tests as  necessary but this is cumbersome. I am open to creating a LabView GUI to create the sequence or if there is an  easy way in TestStand?
Thanks in advance for the help,
    BCE

    BCE,
There are many different ways in which you could implement your test system.  Fortunately, TestStand provides more than enough functionality so you could implement it in different ways.  One of the possibilities you mentioned in your post was to use LabVIEW to generate the TestSequence.  Although this is a good idea, and one that I have seen other customers use, it does have its drawbacks.  In order to create your Sequence you will have to save each Step's information in one of two ways.  You could save it in a file which you would parse through using your VI, or hard code the information into the VI's algorithm.  In both of these cases we will need some kind of file containing the Sequence information, be it a text file or a VI.
Wouldn't it be easier to save all the Step information from your Sequence file in a Sequence file itself?  This begs the question, would it be necessary to create a Sequence at all?  Why couldn't we use a Sequence that contains all the possible steps and just disable the execution of some of them based on user input?  In your post you say that you find it cumbersome to skip certain steps.  In my opinion it is much more cumbersome to create a Sequence every time we want to run a test.
Therefore, I believe the best way to implement your system would be to have the first Step of your Sequence pop up a dialog box where users could select which types of tests they want to run.  (You might even want to add this to the Serial Number window inside the PreUUT callback).  Based on the users' input we would update an array of local boolean variables which determines what tests or test categories should be run.  Each Step in the Sequence would contain a precondition that would read the value from this array and determine if the Step would be executed or not.
Just my two cents.  What does the rest of the community think?  There is more than one way to skin a cat and TestStand provides more than enough silverware. ;-)

  • What is the best way to read and manipulate large data in excel files and show them in Sharepoint

    Hi ,
I have a large excel file that has 700,000 records in it. The excel file has a few columns that change every day.
What is the best way to read the data form the excel file in fastest and most efficient way.
    2 nd Problem,
I have one excel file that has many rows each row contain some data that has certain keywords.
What I want is  to segregate the data of rows into respective sheets(tabs ) in the workbook.
for example in rows have following data
    1. Alfa
    2beta
    3 gama
    4beta
    5gama
    6gama
    7alfa
    in excel
I want there to be 3 tabs now with each of the key words alfa beta and gamma.

    Hi,
I don't really see any better options for SharePoint. SharePoint use other production called 'Office Web App' to allow users to view/edit Microsoft Office documents (word, excel etc.). But the web version of excel doesn't support that much records as well
as there's size limitations (probably the default max size is 10MB).
Regarding second problem, I think you need some custom solutions (like a SharePoint timer job/webpart ) to read and present data.
However, if you can reduce the excel file records to something near 16k (which is supported rows in web version of excel) then you can use SharePoint Excel service to refresh data automatically in the excel file in SharePoint from some external sources.

  • Best way to work on a large project in CS5

    Hello friends,
I've recently started editing a feature length film in APP CS5.  I've never worked on a project this large before (around 160 GB).  Since I've been just doing small projects, it hasn't been an issue to have my source footage on my C: drive.  I sort of forgot the first rule I ever learned: Don't keep your source footage on the same drive as your program.  So, I set up a master project, and then set up a sequence for every individual scene.  The idea was to edit a scene, the drop it on the master time line.  So I actually imported all of my footage and placed it in each corresponding sequence.  Seemed like a good idea at the time.  But then I started trying to edit a scene and my computer laughed at me.  It just couldn't process anything within a project that big.  So I started from scratch.  Moved all my footage to an external drive, deleted it from my C: drive and started over.  Now, I'm just moving a scene's worth of material in at a time.  So far so good, but will I get bogged down again as the project grows?  Even though I'm pulling everything from an external?  And if I probably will, what should I do?  A friend told me that I should export each sequence at a lossless format, such as the animation codec, then bring them back in and place them on a new master timeline.  My concern is that those files are going to be bigger than the original files, so won't that kill my computer, too.  What's the best way to work on such a large project?  I'm running CS5 on a Toshiba Satellite Pro, Intel Core i3, 2.10 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Windows 7 Pro (64 - bit).  Thanks guys!

It's both AVCHD and DSLR.  Are you saying it's too underpowered to do either of the scenarios I mentioned above, or both?  One way, I will just edit each scene, and export them.  Then, I'll begin with a clean slate, bringing those edited sequences back in and dropping them on a timeline in a new project.  The files will be huge, but I'll only be working with those files.  Nothing else will be in the way.  Then I'll just have to put them in order and do a few transitions (dissolves mostly) between some of the scenes, then export the whole thing.  The other way was to just build the entire movie with every scene as a sequence, editing them, and moving them to the master timeline.  Are you saying I won't be able to do either?  If that's the case, then I suppose I'll have to just edit each scene, export them, and then get someone with a monster machine to put it all together for me.  Hoping it doesn't come to that, but it's not the worst thing I could have to do.

  • Advice please, best way to handle creating X number of input / edit forms

    Hi folks,
Like the subject says, looking for a bit of advice. Let's say on page 1, we select a customer, and this customer has X number of pets (usually < 4). They click a check box for each one they want to schedule, and submit. The next page reads the collection and needs to display an input / edit form for each of the pets. What is the best way to go about making this happen?
    Thanks very much,
    -Adam vonNieda

Why not use a tabular form and when you call the form, create how ever many rows you need for the number of pets selected?

  • Best way to group figures and their legends

In an article, I have figures (images) and associated legends (text). They should stay together and anchored to certain places in text. Sometimes, the legend text should wrap the figures.  In addition, in exported html, I wish that the div tag of both the image and the text are wrapped in a outter div tag, and the image and the text div tag should have differnt class name.
I tried to first group the image frame and the text frame, and then put them in an object frame. This strategy seems to not produce the results I desired. So what is the best way of achiving my goals?
    Thank you.

@eric2013 – did you try anchoring objects to get the right hierarchy?

  • Best way to move to a larger external hard drive

Hi everyone, I currently have my masters on an external hard drive and want to move them to a larger hard drive.  What is the best way to move them so that aperture will still be able to find them?  Just clone the drive using something like carbon copy?   Can I just start using the new larger hard drive and not have to take any other steps? Thanks.

Scroll down until you reach Aperture because this one site tell you how to move a bunch of libraries.

  • Best way to re-create a "hosed" library?

I need some advice from the experts here. I messed up my wife's iTunes Library when trying to move her music to an external drive. I also accidentally deleted some files that were not backed up. I've spoken with Apple and they will allow me to re-download any purchases I need to. Everything else is either on the external or scattered about the hard drive and can be located. Unfortunately, the paths to all the song files are wrong because I moved everything manually instead of choosing "consolidate library" like I should have. My wife has over 2000 songs and almost a hundred playlists. What's the best way for me to put this mess back together? I thought about deleting everything from the library and then just dragging and dropping artist folders on the library, but that will mess up every playlist. Is there any way for me to restore things to the way they were with playlists intact?

No, unfortunately there is no easy way to do this kind of thing. Creating pre-comps over pre-comps is pretty much way to go.

GROUP BY  TRUNC (birth_date, 'MONTH')I would probably use TRUNC, but it depends on how that value is being used elsewhere in the query. For example, will the output be sorted, such that you want '12.2011' to come before '01.2012'?

  • What is the best way to remove footage from the middle of a clip?

What is the best way to remove unwanted footage from the middle of a clip? I have a clip that I've trimmed from the start and finsih, but I need to remove "boring" footage from inbetween.

Thank you for your replies. I tried the blade tool followed by select and delete but it did not seem very precise. I had better success with this aproach at the ends rather than in the middle. I watched a tutorial video on using the precision editor, but the video was small so I had a difficult time following where the person clicked, etc. Any info on using the precision editor would be greatly appreciated. I need to make precise cuts to avoid creating unatural motion for the subject. So far, close but no cigar.

  • Best way to manage small pieces of a 13 minute clip?

A client has given me some AVI footage to cut in with some of my material.
He's said 'at 13 min, 40 seconds' use 5 seconds. 'at 12 min, 10 seconds, use 8 seconds'.
There will be some fades and I'll be adding text, etc. in Motion.
What's the best way to manage this?
I'd guess cutting this long clip info small pieces out using FCP and then import them into Motion?
But, I was curious if there was a way to work completely in Motion?
Also - if I drag from the edge of a clip in motion, thus changing the part of the clip displayed, I can't really tell what the timecode is (of the original position) even when I've turned on timecode rather than frames. Which would make doing any edits by absolute timecode rather hard.
Is there a way to see the absolute timecode position in the clip after changing the parts of the clip that are displayed?

Your original idea is right on. Cut up the clip in FCP. Don't try to work with a 13-minute clip in Motion - it won't like you. Motion will probably constantly crash try to process something that big, and it will just cause headaches.
FCP will also display the absolute timecode.

  • What is the best way to dynamically create table partition by year and month based on a date column?

    Hi,
I have a huge table and it will keep growing. I have a date column in this table and thought of partition the table by year and month. Can any you suggest better approach so that partition will create automatically for new data also along with the existing

  • What's the best way to start a new, LARGE vault?

    Hi all,
I have a late 2010 Mac Pro and a 1.8TB Aperture library on a dedicated internal drive. The internal 2TB drive that manages the library has gotten full, so I've just replaced the internal drive to 3TB and copied the library over from the 2TB drive (took about 4hrs to copy).
Now I've got to replace the 2TB EXTERNAL vault drive, with a 3TB external vault drive. I'm wondering how best to go about it?
Should I just create a new vault from within Aperture or copy my old vault to the new drive?
I mentioned I have a 2010 Mac Pro because it only has USB 2.0 (and FireWire 800) ports. I'm guessing it will take days to create this new vault via USB and am wondering if anyone knows the fastest way to go about it ?
    Thanks very much

    1) Physically disconnect the old Vault drive and put it aside as an archival backup, at least until Aperture and your new hardware have been in _perfect_ operation for a few weeks.
    2) Verify that Aperture is working properly and that your Library is fully functional.
    3) Attach your new drive via FW800. If the new drive is capable of external (rather than just through FW) power attach the external power. USB also works but is slower and IMO less consistent than FW.
    4) Use Disk First Aid to verify that the new drive is functioning properly.
    5) Restart the Mac.
    6) Enter Aperture and from within Aperture create a new Vault on the new external drive.
    7) Keep the Vault drive physically disconnected from the system when not actively backing up to avoid damage from power surges as well as from human error. Ideally store it in a vault and/or off site. A vault drive lost to lightning, fire or theft has no value.

    -Allen
P.S. Personally I recommend against such large Libraries and Vaults. I recommend using a Referenced-Originals Library and backing up originals before entering Aperture. That makes for a much smaller Library and much smaller vaults as well as much safer originals. In databases smaller is by definition better.
