Best Way to Have 'Extended' WiFi Network Through Long House

HI, I'm helping a friend setup his wireless network at his house. The house is rather long & narrow.
We setup a new Time Capsule at the far end of the house in the office. It functions as the base station, and needs to connect to the cable modem, 1 non-wireless computer, and a USB printer back there.
Then we setup a new Airport Express (n) in the middle living room of the house. This was mostly to get extended range, but also to plug audio into home theater for AirTunes.
The TC is set to a/b/g/n (for an older MacBook and two iPhones) 2.4ghz on a free channel. When connecting to it we get great speeds, but it does not have the signal to carry to the far side of the house. I even tried it initially as 802.11n ONLY at both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz with a new MacBook, but it still didn't seem to get a whole lot more coverage (not enough, at least).
I tried setting the AE to either 'Extend My Network' or to 'Participate in a WDS'. In both instances, we get more signal at the far end of the house (not as much as I would have thought), but the speed is HORRIBLY slow! It is far less than half the speed. As soon as we move back in range of the TC, the speed is generally really good again (checking connection by MAC address).
• So is there ANY way we can get coverage over the whole house for both 802.11n and 802.11g devices, and still have decent throughput??
Thanks! Unfortunately they don't have ethernet running through the walls, otherwise I'd try that. And I'm terrified to think what the backup times might be like when we start trying Time Machine!

Hmm, we could try seeing if having both in the center would provide enough reach. Not sure if it would. The problem would be wireless access for the computer in the back office (old iMac, no WiFi), and printing to the printer back there.
• In this scenario, would adding a second Airport Express in the back room just for the computer and printer slow the network from the base station(s)?
• What about putting just TC in center living room on a/b/g/n, and AE in back office for computer & printer? Pros/Cons? We'd just have to figure out a way to get the Airtunes in the living room (I'm pushing him for Apple TV).
The reason for TC for Time Machine backups is very simple. I know this couple would not remember to regularly attach a hard drive to do Time Machine backups. It needs to be as 'automatic and painless' as the TC was 'intended' to make it, otherwise I know it just won't happen.
Thanks again!

  • Have timecapsule & 2 express and want an extended wifi network

Have these 3 devices but couldnt make them work, tried to set extended wifi network, first assigning timecapsule wired from fiber modem and then setting both express as extended thru wifi...but these two not working...
I ve read that express should be located to base (timecapsule in this case) and cannot link all as chain, is that correct?
How can I set a set of express devices working as wifi amplifiers ???
    Thank you in advance

Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature works like the hub and spokes of a wheel.
The Time Capsule would be your 'hub".  One AirPort Express would be at the end of a "spoke", since it must communicate directly to the "hub".
You could have a second (or third, or fourth) Airport Express at the end of other "spokes", but each Express must communicate directly to the "hub".
AirPort Express devices at the ends of the "spokes" cannot communicate to other AirPort Express devices at the ends of other "spokes".
Another way of saying the same thing is that although you can have multiple extenders, you can only extend the wireless signal one time, not two times. The devices can not be linked as a chain.
We assume that both of your AirPort Express devices are 802.11n models. Is that correct?
We also need to know what version of AirPort Utility that you are using in order to provide more tips.  If you are not sure, open AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, and then click About AirPort Utility. Please post back with the version number that you see there.

  • Is there any way to save a wifi network so that you don't have to join every time you open your mac?

I was wondering if there was a way to save a wifi network to your macbook so that when I open it everytime I dont have to connect it everytime.

It should remember your networks by default, but in case that option is turned off, go to System Preferences - Network - click Wifi on the left - click Advanced - and tick "Remember networks this computer has joined".
If that is already ticked, your network settings may be corrupt and it may help to create a new location - in the Location menu at the top of the Networks screen, click Edit Locations, add a new named location and try again with the wifi connection.

  • THe best way to connect my airport devices (through UTP)

    Hi Guys,
I have three floors in my house. Basement, ground flor and 1st floor.
In ground floor I have setup a Time capsule as my main device (DHCP "server"). This device also connects to my ISP.
For basement and 1st floor I'm using two Airport Expresses, but since my wifi signal from time capsule (1st floor) can't reach to these 2 devices (can't extend wifi) I used the UTP connection instead. So my time capsule is connected by UTP directly to both Expresses.
    My question:
What is the best setup for Expresses to extend my network through UTP. I'd like to have the same WIFI name in all three floors and all my devices to stay connected if I move them arround the house (ipad, etc,...).
Currently my setup is done in a way that both Expresses use web connection from Time capsule via UTP and the both provide a wireless network with the same name as Time Capsule. It's working, but I have three different wifi connection running simultaniously with the same name.
Is there a better way or that's the best solution?

Not all HD tv's are capable of accepting 720p, it would be worth checking with your manual or your manufacturer.
We don't have netflix in the UK, but I understand it too is protected by HDCP and so a compliant converter will not work. Sorry I can't recomend a non compliant converter it's against the Terms of Use for these communities.

  • Best way to set up home network using Time Capsule

    Hi
My current home network consists of Macbook Pro 17 connected wirelessly, another Mac and few pcs. I have a Time Capsule, new netgear router and several hard drives. At the moment my main drive is plugged in via usb to the mac, however id like to set up a proper mini network where i can at least share several drives between macs, HOWEVER i also want to back up this data via TC, which is why at the moment my hard drive is plugged into the mac, so it can be backed up. Am i correct is saying that TC will not backup netwrok drives?
..any suggestions for best way to set up a network with TC backing up drives?
    Thanks

    Yes.

You could share the locally-connected drive.  That would require that your Mac be on whenever any other network client needed to access the drive.

  • Extend wifi network via PLC + Airport express

    Hi everyone,
I have a linksys WRT54G and an Airport Express. I'm using the WRT54G to create a wifi network (toto), and the AE is too far away to get the WR54G signal.
I want to connect the WRT54G to the AE via PLC to extend the toto network, but when I try to select "extend a wireless network" in the airport utility, it says "the network you selected cant be extended..."
Ideally I don't want do have 2 wifi networks... And I think WDS is not what I want to do.
Do you know what settings do I have to use ?
    Many thanks !!!!!

At home I have two wifi networks , I try to use one of them depending on their strength of signal, can I not save  both their passwords on Apple TV , so that I can switch to one of the two wifi networks as required
Also the passwords are long and cumbersome to type every time on the apple  TV remote, what is the alternative if I cannot store them on the memory of the Apple TV

Is it possible that you are using the same password for the old O2 Study and newer O2 Apple Base Station networks?
If so, Keychain Access is storing the old information about the old network and may be associating it with your AirPort Extreme settings based on the BSSID that William has mentioned.
If that's the case, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access and look for a listing with the old network name. Delete this entry. You may need to power down both the computer and the AirPort Extreme and restart them.

  • Best way to have only one  instance of an object in web application.

    Hello,
I defined a class that provides services to my web application: subscribes user, check if user already subscrubed etc. The objects don't need to save any session information. So it is like a Stateless Session Bean (from what I've read about Session beans).
The webapp is small and I don't want to use EJBs.
What would be the best way to have one instance of the above class in my webapp ?
Would making the class static be a good method ? Using a factory ?
Is there a way to put in web.xml something that asks the container to instantiate an object that is not a servlet and place it in Application scope, so that I cann retrieve it whenever required in my app ?
    Other suggestions ?
    Thank you,
    Vlad.

    Hi
The best way to have only one instance is use the singleton pattern. The idea is : the class has a private
contructor, a public static method that returns an instance of this object and a static member that is false if not any instance and true if there si an instance.
To obtain one instance you can do some like
    MyObject ob=MyObject.getIntance();
this method inspect the static member and returns null if true. If false set to true and return the object
    via the private constructor.

Yes, there might be better way to write it the way you did it. But since I don't know what you wrote or what you are looking for I can't give any advice. You need to be more specific.
