Best way to import data?

Hi everyone,
I haven't worked with In Design before so I have no idea where to start. I have a client who outputs data into an access database which is then put into word, which is then moved into In Design and formatted manually. This is for a large A4 sized brochure book.
Is there anyway to design sections of  the document as a report so that you can set sections and somehow automatically import the data. Similar to a report in Access where you set a repeating section and tell it which part of the information you want to be displayed.
The section of the brochure is the same for every page so I don't see any reason for the process to be so manual.
Does anyone know if there is an easy way to do what I want to achieve? Would In Design take a XML file, or have the ability to read from an access database?
I'm a developer not a designer. I'm going to be outputting a file for the designer to use to create the brochure.
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Rebecca

Hi,
It's quite likely that CatBase could do this job for you - it would take the data from a database, spreadsheet, or whatever, apply tags to fomrat it, and then create a tagged text file which you'd import into your InDesign layout. Everything would automatically be formatted as required ... Here's a short video that shows a Yellow Pages-style directory being published - probably not exactly what you're after but it gives you an idea of how the process works.
For more info about CatBase see www.catbase.com or contact me! ([email protected])

  • Best way to Import Data from a SQL Server Table?

    Hi,
Firstly thanks for looking at this question.
We need to import data into SAP BPC 5.1 on a twice daily basis and have chosen not to export to a .CSV file but instead to hold all data in a SQL table and import it directly from there.  As part of the import we wish to run the default logic, however only over the data which is imported as opposed to having to running default logic over the entire database after every import.
We did some research on this topic and the only thing we could find that would work as described above is using the "Import SQL" package.  However we keep experiencing problems with it and have not yet been able to run it successfully; the errors it gives are not consistent from run to run which makes it difficult to start a thread, though we are getting help from the helpdesk at the moment.
My question here though is - is there another way that someone knows of to import data into SAP BPC from a SQL table, and being able to run default logic over just the data being imported, or is our only hope getting the "Import SQL" package working?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Iain
Forgot to mention details of our environment:
    SAP BPC v5.0.495, 2 server environment -
Server 1 (DB/AS/SSIS/File server) = 64bit Windows 2k3 server with 64bit SQL Server Enterprise Edition
    Server 2 (IIS/App server) = 32bit Windows 2k3 server

    Lain,
I recently created SSIS packages that need to work with a staging table that does all kind of manipulations of that data before it is loading into SAP BPC, because it also has to load the data in the drillthrough table within the same package. From one point in my package the data is also in a SQL table so basically the same as in your situation. This also works with an export to CSV within the DTSX file like Alwin said, because in this case you can use the standard transformation and conversion stuff during the load.
I also needed to limit the data region for logic to the data region that is in the load for currency conversion purposes. This is not very much of a problem. I had a situation where I have an Accounts receivable cube containing a daily time dimension for keyduedates and a datasrc dimension containing weeks. Every week has a complete overview of the open AR items in that week and need to be converted for that week (datasrc) only and not for the whole database every time we load. But by default data would be converted based on the Keyduedates dimension while I wanted the Week dimension to be used as the data region. I solved it by using these rows in the logic:
    *Scope_by=version,Weeks
    *xdim_memberset weeks=%weeks_set%
    *xdim_memberset version = %version_set%
I can send you the SSIS package and logic if you want. Just send me your details then.

are (mostly) teh same, I need to port the data from sqlserver to my ora database.
what is the best way to do it?
    thanks.

    Hello Zack,
The Oracle Migration Workbench can help you to migrate your data from your Oracle 9.2 database to SQL Server 2000. Please refer to Chapter 6, 'Migrating the Database' in the Oracle Migration Workbench User's Guide for more information about how to migrate your data using the Oracle Migration Workbench.
You can find this document at the following location on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Web site:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B15857_01/migrate_db.htm#sthref282
    I hope this helps.

  • Best way to import data using a Java exe

We're trying to pull a bunch of tables from an Informix SE 7.25 database, truncate some tables on an Oracle schema, and import the Informix tables into the Oracle system. We don't need to modify the data -- just pull from one, truncate, and import into the other system. What's the most efficient (and simple!) way to accomplish this via a Java executable? Thank you.

You can do anything from using JDBC bulk inserts or generating your own insert statements and executing an Oracle native application to import them, ala SQL*Plus. Whether it is an executable or not is really simply a deployment decision. Take a look at the various JDBC batch/bulk operations. Also take a lot at what formats Oracle's imp tool supports and see if generating it that way is simpler. I'm not even sure you need Java to accomplish this task. A native shell script can probably do it too.

  • Hi, Please help. I accidentally deleted my entire Iphoto Library. I used Stellar Phoenix 4.1 and I do believe that I recovered all. I recovered to "My Passport" for Mac External HD. Files are all mixed up, best way to import back?

Hi, a couple days ago, I was orgainizing my Iphoto libray. Then, I thought that I was emptying my trash on Iphoto. (the ones I deleted when orgainizing) after hitting are you sure button, I realized that it was 209 files with 18,000+ photos. So I frantically stopped iphoto from "saving critical information" thinking If I left it open I could copy all my files over to (I beleive somewhere in finder under pictures?) I thought, but it most have been under the applications folder. Well this is where I really messed up. So after saving every file to that section, and everything was normal again on iphoto, I decided to make space and delete them from where I put them. So instead of selecting each file indivually, I used the select ALL button. Only to find that it deleted EVERYTHING. Iphoto (the file) was apparently at the bottom of the page along with Nikon Transfer, Lightroom 2 and god knows what else. That is when I found a data recovery software program (Stellar Phoenix 4.1mac) 17 hours later it found 159GB. I read enough to know that I HAD to go and buy an external HD. (even though I already own Time Capsule, but I never hooked it up ) was confused about if I could actually use that for this matter so, I just went and bought My Passport an external HD for Mac. Plugged it in, and recovered what looks like all my files (hopefully) did also read enough that I knew NOT to use my computer after this occured.
Now that you all know how I got into this mess, I would like to know the best way to import the files back? Ok I know this sounds easy, but all the files are scattered everywhere on the HD. Is there a way to put them back on my Mac Book Pro that would possibly put them in some kind of order? Date? Image file number? Anything? 18,000 photos to reorgainze is going to be brutal. I can reinstall Lightroom 2, if i can locate where I put the disk. And I also have CS5. Also wondering if the quality of the photo was affected?  I did get them back, so I am not complaining but any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Will be turning on Time Machine and hooking up Time Capsule as well. Should I also use my new HD along with capsule? Any advice on that matter would also be greatly appreciated as well!!!!!
    Thanks, Michelle

  • What is the best way to import and edit a large amount of footage?

    Hello Apple world,
As a newbie to Final Cut 10 I have a question regarding best ways to import footage. I'll give you a quick run down.
I have a 150 gig of gopro footage that I just hit 'import' to recently (from my external HD), it took around 10 hours to process it all.
Its all under one event, but then somewhat organised into dates etc. But it is very slow. I imported it all at once because it was all footage from the last 6 months of my Whistler/states/fiji trip and want to make a movie out of it, using clips from all over the time, not just in chronological order.
I have the latest mac book pro, 4 gig ram,2.4 GHz i7, 750 hard drive, with nothing else on the computer.
Ive read about creating proxy media, after ive imported, but am still somewhat confused as to the benefit. Does it create duplicates? that will fill up my pretty large HD as it is!
Can you suggest any ways that might make my laptop run a bit faster? Should i delete and work directly from external HD etc etc?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

    Hello,
I've just finished shooting what I am considering to be my directorial masterpiece.  Shot it on the Canon 5D (1080p, 24fps), and the footage looks amazing.  Now I am ready to start editing and have been using premiere lately, but I have yet to figure out the proper pipeline.  I want to know the best way to retain resolution before I delve into this project.
    My questions:
    1)  What is the best way to start a new project and import the footage without having to render whilst editing, so as to retain all resolution and originality of the source footage?
    2)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to export this same footage once editing is complete so as to retain that crisp 1080p for which the 5D is so recognized?
    3)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to import and export/ render between premiere and after effects?  I am speaking mostly of vfx and color correction.  I also have some 30fps footage that I intend to slow down in AE and then import into premiere.
I know this is pretty broad, but as a solo filmmaker I really need someone's guidance.  I rarely ever finish my films with the same, crisp look as the footage.  I need pipeline help, and really appreciate it!
    1. Follow the advice above. Also use the Media Browser to import the footage in case you have spanned media files. Import files with the Media Browser.
    2. It largely depends on what you wish to ouput to: Blu-ray, web, etc. This FAQ gives the best answer: What are the best export settings?
    3. Use the Replace with Adobe After Effects Composition function.

  • Is there a way to import data from excel -when one of the columns in excel is hyperlink column?

Is there a way to import data from excel  - so if a column is hyperlink - the whole data will move to the list (text + link of the hyperlink column)?
    keren tsur

    Hi,
According to your description, you want to export excel which contains a hyperlink column to SharePoint list.
    Refer to the following steps:
Open the Excel, insert/create the table.
Now click on any cell of table and go to the ‘Design Tools’.
Click on the Export and then ‘Export table to SharePoint List’.
You will see a popup where you need to provide the URL of SharePoint site, list name and description.
Then click on next, On the next screen you will see columns with data types which are going to create in SharePoint list.
Now click finish and wait until the operation gets finished. You will see that list gets created in SharePoint site with the records.

  • What could be the best way to Export data from 11.5.8 instance to 12.1.2?

    Hi All
What could be the best way to Export data from 11.5.8 instance to 12.1.2?
    Release: 11.5.8
OS: Oracle Solaris on SPARC (32-bit) verison 9
    DB: 9.2.0.1
    Thanks in advance

What kind of data you are looking to move?
Database export/import is only supported for full database export/import and the application release should be the same on the source/target nodes.
You can move the setup using iSetup or FNDLOAD.
    Thanks,

  • The best way to import photos from Picasa to iPhoto

    Hi,
Many of my friends share their pictures online using picasa. Sometimes, I'd like to copy these pictures to keep a backup offline. As a software, I use iPhoto; not picasa. What is the best way to import pictures from picasa to iPhoto?
I first tried to subscribe to the RSS feed using iPhoto and then copy the pictures from there to my library, but then the dates of the pictures are set wrong: instead of indicating when the picture was shot, it indicates some other date (I guess it indicates the date when the picture was uploaded to picasa).
Then I decided to install the software picasa.app. From the webalbum of my friends, I could download the pictures directly to picasa.app. Then I exported them to the desktop, and from there imported them to iPhoto. The dates where set correctly, but I lost all the titles and comments of the pictures.
Do you have any method to download the pictures while keeping both the dates and the titles correctly?
    Thanx!

There is a direct option in Organizer which lets you import from iPhoto. This is under Import dropdown menu in left panel.
If you are importing from iPhoto'09, your Tags, Albums Events, captions, star rating would also get imported apart from your media. This works differently for iPhoto'011 where you can get only the media to the Organizer,
Just a couple of things to know:
    1. If in iPhoto preferences, you have chosen to create copies of your photos in iPhoto library and your library hence refers to the media store inside the library package, then on importing from iPhoto, Organizer would create copies of all those media under your pictures folder. That means, it would not corrupt your iPhoto package or modify it in any way.
    2. However, if in iPhoto, you are organizing by using references to original location on your Hard drive i.e. you are not creating copies of media in iPhoto library then on importing from iPhoto to Organizer, the Organizer would also use the same references and would not create copies of the media.
    Hope that helps!

  • Best way to export data for a migration

    Hi Oracle Community,
What's the best way to export data from an Oracle 8i database for it to be suitable for import into an Oracle 10g database?
What's the best way to export data if it is to go into different rdbms database?
    Thanks, David

Thanks everyone for all your help. You guys are great.
There seems to be many good ways to export your data from Oracle into a flat file format, suitable for import into other RDBS': Oracle, mysql, postgresql, etc.
A few tools where mentioned but using SQL*Plus, which comes with Oracle (And SQL*LDR on the backend, which also comes with Oracle) seem the most straight forward.
I found this script on asktom.oracle.com to work great, slightly modified here,
(to Include linesize max, and pipes rather than commas):
set echo off newpage 0 space 0 pagesize 0 feed off head off trimspool on
    set linesize 32767
    spool payment.txt
    select
    PAYMENT_ID||'|'||
    USER_ID||'|'||
    <more fields her>
    from
    payment
    spool off
    exit ;
It works great. Rather than making one of these for each table I wrote an perl script called ora_export. http://crowfly.net/oracle/ora_export. It runs in Unix and only requires SQL*PLUS. It creates these four files:
<tablename>.def # list of table columns and types (SQL*Plus DESC)
<tablename>_dump.sql  # a script to export the data
    <tablename>.psv # THE DATA (eq. - name|address|etc)
<tablename>_load.ctl  # SQL*LDR control for ORCL if you need it.

  • FcpX best way to import photos

What is the best way to import jpegs into Final Cut Pro X? I was told by Apple Tech Support a few years back to import them into IPhoto and access them through IPhoto. Is this still the preferred way to import photos? I'd rather not use IPhoto.

    cleporehart wrote:

    ok, that ol' dpi-myth ... :
video has no dots-per-inch - a fullHD screen with 50" has the same1920x1080pix as a tiny 7" fullHD screen.
dpi matters only in PRINT: it's an 'advice' how to interpolate btw two pixels. dots ≠ pixel! Video cares only for pixel, never for 'dots'.-
    next …
jpgs usually are highly compressed. too high. if you notice banding in pics, in many cases this is based upon jpg-compression! people use 40Mpix cameras, but squeeze the data into tiny 250k files ...
max res of video is 1920x1080; additional pixels only needed when applying re-framing (crop, Ken Bruns etc); dpi can be set to 500 or 7 - no difference; if you like to get that last 0.01% of extra quality, convert your raws to tiff or png. or jpg in 'best'/100% ...
iPhoto is - imho - only 'needed' as a very handy data-base.
FCPX has/is a data-base too - I like all my 'footage' in my Events; not elsewhere. But this is no general advice.

Is there a way to import data in a spreadsheet or text file into Contacts v7? I have a list of about 500 people and their email addresses in FileMaker Pro that I can export in a number of formats that can be manipulated. Is there any way to get those contacts into Contacts without entering them one at a time?

I have answered my own question. I exported the data from a layout in FileMaker Pro containing the required fields as tab separated text. That produced a .tab file that Contacts wanted nothing to do with. However, when I changed the .tab in the file name to .txt, Contacts accepted it as a file to import (File/Import). I then identified the field in Contacts in which the data in each field in the txt file was to be placed and in it went! The trick was changing .tab to .txt in the name of the file exported by FileMaker Pro.
