Best way to import music from PC/External HD

Hi there, thanks in advance for any help here.
I have a a lot of music and have spent the last few days getting it all into one location on an external HD. I have placed my iTunes folder in my Music Folder on External HD, and then dropped all of my music directly into iTunes-->iTunes Media-->Music
There is another folder above the Music Folder which is called Automatically Add to iTunes.....should i have put my tracks in there for them to show in iTunes? Or is there another way to get everything to show up in my iTunes player?
And what is the best way to get all my music organised as this i something i have never been good a which means i don't really end up listening to any of it!!

To answer the second question first, iTunes will look at the tracks and create library entries. It gets track information from the tags in the song files. It does not make use of folder names in this process, and thus does not care how many are in a folder.
Per your first question, once the files are in the iTunes Media folder, you can use the iTunes command File > Add Folder to Library, and navigate to the music folder.
I strongly suggest that you do this on a small subfolder first, so you can see how it works, before aiming at the whole folder.
As far as organizing: once the songs are in your iTunes library, you can always find what you want by going to iTunes first. However, if you want to have them in regular Artist/Album folders, you can (at any time) enable the iTunes Advanced preference to "Keep iTunes Media folder organized."

  • Best way to import music from VHS or DVD

I have a few VHS tapes and DVDs with some music tracks I want to make into MP3's. I have a 12" powerbook with microphone jack. What is the easiest way that will yeild really good quality?

    Michelle and Randy:
For a DVD - put it in the Computer and use Audio Hijack to capture the sound and record it to mp3 or aiff or whatever format you choose.
You can read about Audio Hijack here: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/
The VHS is more complicated but as you're only hoping to life the music as opposed to the video: Run a mini-jack (1/8th) cable from the headphone output on your VCR to the line-in on your Mac.
Go to System Preferences -> Sound and under Input select the Line In
Now you need software to record the audio: there many options but I suggest the Open Source (as in Free) Audacity. You can download it from here:
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Then record each album a side at a time. The wave-form editor makes it a cinch to edit the file into tracks. I suggest that you save as Aiff files, which are large, and if you wish you can convert them to mp3 or AAC with iTunes.
Happy Christmas*, Xmas*, Holidays*, Hannukah* or Monday* to you.

  • Is there a way to import music from my ipod to the computer?

is there a way to import music from my ipod to the camputer?
I have music from all over the world and i want to import all of it to my computer..

Sorry for insulting Apple. This whole thing has me frustrated. You would think that this is an easy thing...which it is after downloading the third party software and all.
I am just a bit edgy after talking to 3 customer support folks for almost 2 hours, who I could barely understand and then having them just tell me to download the files again. 3500+ songs...jumping out the window was looking more pleasant (jk). Now I have to explain to the wife why the phone is busted in-two...lol.
Anyway, I was able to get hooked up with some software and it seems to be downloading fine. I am using iPodCopy. Thanks for the nudge in the right direction and putting up with a bit of attitude. I am sure they have their reasons for not making this an easier operation.

Is there a way to import music from my windows media player, if so how?

Exploter the settings in Windows Media Player. It should tell where it is currently storing files. You can also enable the path column in WMP to see where individual tracks are stored. See also Getting iTunes & Windows Media Player to play nicely.

  • The best way to import photos from Picasa to iPhoto

    Hi,
Many of my friends share their pictures online using picasa. Sometimes, I'd like to copy these pictures to keep a backup offline. As a software, I use iPhoto; not picasa. What is the best way to import pictures from picasa to iPhoto?
I first tried to subscribe to the RSS feed using iPhoto and then copy the pictures from there to my library, but then the dates of the pictures are set wrong: instead of indicating when the picture was shot, it indicates some other date (I guess it indicates the date when the picture was uploaded to picasa).
Then I decided to install the software picasa.app. From the webalbum of my friends, I could download the pictures directly to picasa.app. Then I exported them to the desktop, and from there imported them to iPhoto. The dates where set correctly, but I lost all the titles and comments of the pictures.
Do you have any method to download the pictures while keeping both the dates and the titles correctly?
    Thanx!

There is a direct option in Organizer which lets you import from iPhoto. This is under Import dropdown menu in left panel.
If you are importing from iPhoto'09, your Tags, Albums Events, captions, star rating would also get imported apart from your media. This works differently for iPhoto'011 where you can get only the media to the Organizer,
Just a couple of things to know:
    1. If in iPhoto preferences, you have chosen to create copies of your photos in iPhoto library and your library hence refers to the media store inside the library package, then on importing from iPhoto, Organizer would create copies of all those media under your pictures folder. That means, it would not corrupt your iPhoto package or modify it in any way.
    2. However, if in iPhoto, you are organizing by using references to original location on your Hard drive i.e. you are not creating copies of media in iPhoto library then on importing from iPhoto to Organizer, the Organizer would also use the same references and would not create copies of the media.
    Hope that helps!

  • HT1473 Is there a way to import music from a cd to an iPad?

Is there a way to import music from a cd to an iPad?

Not without going through iTunes... Well, strictly speaking there are other tools that can copy audio files into the iPad's memory, but iTunes is the way that is supported, and using iTunes ensures the device can be backed up. Useful should you need to restore the device in the event of a problem, or a replacement in the event of loss, theft, or damage.

  • What is the best way to import pictures from iPhoto without compression?

I'm trying to create a slide show using Final Cut Pro. No, I'm not interested in using iDVD slide show function because it doesn't allow me to do a whole lot. I would like to add titles and music for certain segments with video inserted here and there.
Anyway, when I used the slide show function in iPhoto, exported it out as a quick movie file, and then imported it into Final Cut Pro, I noticed a significant downgrade in quality of images. It obviously looks different from when I play the slide show in iPhoto. What would be the best way to import pictures into Final Cut Pro without any compression?
    Thanks in advance.

I only see Share > Export.
Some versions of iPhoto work that way -it's just Apple moving things around.
what's the difference between exporting it from iPhoto then import it into FCP vs. just importing directly from FCP?
Your first post mentioned exporting a slide show from iPhoto -I assumed that is where your images are stored.
I do not want to import pictures one by one...
You don't have to. iPhoto will let you select as many as you want, or if the images are elsewhere, you can also select multiple files from FCP's Import dialog.
    ...and stick them together manually.
Editing is an art and involves some effort on your part. It is not an automated process. This method opens up far more possibilities, access to filters and color correction and the opportunity to use Motion for even more sophisticated animation.
But, it only allows me to export it as 720 x 480. The original size of my photos is 3872 x 2592. Is there any way I can create a quicktime file in the original size?
You should be aware that 3872 x 2592 is not a standard pixel aspect ratio that is used in video. The images will be resized to the Sequence settings that you set up in Final Cut Pro.
I have never used iPhoto to make a slideshow before, but I just gave it a try and was able to export one with the images in their native size, simply by typing the pixel dimensions into the boxes in the dialog window:
I don't have PhotoMagico myself, but it comes highly recommended by several of the forum regulars.
Perhaps one of them will see this discussion and help with your last question.

  • What is the best way to import pictures from Lightroom 5 into FCP X

What is the  best way to transfer pictures from Lightroom 5 into Final Cut Pro X?

There is no one best way.  If, for instance, you want to be able to zoom into the picture with a Ken Burns effect then you may want to save out a very high res version that will be larger than your video resolution. Just use Lightroom to export a jpg file wherever you want it. You could export it into the Events folder and then choose not to copy it when you import it within FCPx. You could import the picture into iPhoto and then access it directly from within FCPx. Those are two simple, "regular" ways to get it into FCPx but if you are not going to Ken Burns the image by zooming into it and such you will want to crop it in Lightroom to the same size you will be using ie if you are making 720HD video then crop the image to that size and proportion before you export it from Lightroom.

  • Importing music FROM an external hard drive

My dance studio has an external hard drive with over 15,000 songs in MP3 format, and I would like to be able to put some of those songs on an iPod. My problem: I do not want double copies of my 15,000 songs (one copy in the external hard drive and one copy in iTunes) as that would take up A LOT of computer space. Space I don't have. I have recently installed iTunes on the studio computer (preferring the program for my personal music), is there a way to import the songs from my external hard drive into my iTunes library with out making two copies of each song (in different formats as explained earlier)? Can you "tell" iTunes to find its music in an external hard drive?

Check your iTunes Preferences. Go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced and see if you have "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" checked. If you haven't then all you did was add a reference to the original location (the external drive) to iTunes without copying the song files them selves. With the external drive disconnected iTunes can no longer locate the file to play from. If that's the case you'd need to delete the songs from iTunes, change preference and add the songs over again.

  • Whats the best way to import files from my ipod to my itunes

I recently had to purchase a new laptop, and would like to know if anyone has a good way to import my library from an Ipod Classic to my new laptop(running windows 8). I don't know what software is out there for PC based Itunes. I had Best buy back up my stuff to a external hard drive, but some of my library is missing. Any help would be much appriciated, thanks!

Time Machine is for making backups and restoring ones it previously created. It doesn't restore data backed up or copied in other ways. In your case, it's better to use a cloning utility or manually drag the files than it is to use Time Machine.

  • Importing Music from an external drive

Can anybody help i am new to itunes and Ipods and have just got my first 1 to which i am over the moon with
However my question is i have a large collection of music which i have built up over the years which are stored on an external drive in Seperate folders which is the Album name and a sub directory representing the CD number ie
    D:\Music\Album No 1 Name\CD1
    D:\Music\Album No 1 Name\CD2
    D:\Music\Album No 2 Name\CD1
    D:\Music\Album No 2 Name\CD2
    etc
What i want to do is import all the music so the Album name that appears on the Ipod will read Album No of that album, and the music within that album will be all the mp3's within the CD1 & CD2 preferably keeping the track number saved in each cd and automatically know that CD1 & CD2 are a compilation album called with the album name
can this be done if so how

Move all the folders from your external drive to your computer. Then, in iTunes, click File, then "Add Folder to Library". The find the folder and double click it. You have to do the last part for every folder.

  • What is the best way to import photos from an Android phone?

Hi. I'm running Adobe Photoshop Lightroom v. 4.3 to edit and organize my photos. So, after having shot a few photos with my camera - a Samsung Galaxy s4 - I will plug my S4 to my PC (USB), open APL, click "import" and start going, as I always do with my DLS. However, on the import page there will appear all sorts of stuff, not only my recently taken photos named Bestfit, Large, and so on, but also quite a lot of photos I could swear I never have taken, some of them looking like screenshots of some sort. Obviously, this isn't how things should be. So my question is, a) how do I get rid of all those pictures that of some reason seemed to already be on my camera, and b) what should I do to see only one version (the best) of those recently taken? Should I start using a third-party program? In case, which?
As this was the case also with my former HTC Desire, I suppose this is may be an Android case, but on the other hand, I guess several of you may have encountered this.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ole K

I had the same problem.  To prevent that, I change the import source from the default source that's already selected under "Devices" on the left panel, to the source lower in that same panel, under "Files" where you will see the Windows drive letter that the Android's storage was mounted under, expand that, expand the DCIM folder, and then select Camera.  So mine is typically F:\DCIM\Camera.  If you have a Mac, I have no idea how the import screen presents files vs devices, but I suspect you'll find it there too.
Sometimes I find that Windows takes a little while to list the Files drive letters, even though it already lists the Android under Devices.  If you don't see anything but your computer's normal drive letters, try canceling the import, waiting a few seconds, and then clicking import again.  That usually enough time for it to finish mounting/recognizing.  I think this is a Windows process, not a Lightroom one, as the drive letters aren't fully accessible in Windows Exporer immediately either.
