Best way to install Tiger over 9.1

My sister has a slot loading iMac 400 with 9.1 installed. It has the Firmware 4.1.9. The problem is she has files from Appleworks scattered about in different locations, pictures saved as attachments in Eudora & just a general mess. Ideally, I'd like to do an Erase & Install, but she'd lose to much. Is it a good or bad idea to leave 9 on there & install Tiger or is there a better way. She only has a 20GB HD. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Joe,
Thanks for the reply.
1) Should I upgrade to the latest 9.2.2 first
Yes I would I have found that 9.2.2 is a more stable environment
2) She has a retail Tiger DVD,
I installed Jag by simply inserting the disc and do a basic install. The computer will create a new OS system right on the HD. The great thing is she will then be able to select if she wants to boot into 9 or X. This will allow her to use the computer as if there were no changes but she will also be able to boot to X. Once she boots into X she can get used to using the new OS. When she is in X if she tries to open an existing file that was created in 9, the machine goes into a "classic mode" and will allow her to work on the file. It is as if she is using 9 and X and the same time.
I must admit that I often boot into 9 and run the computer as it was. We must realize that sooner or later most people will have to use X. I find that certain web-sites won't support 9 any more. So to me having both systems is the best of both worlds.
Just insert the DVD and follow the prompts. It is really easy.
Another hint. Take A screen shot of your TCP/IP and /or Internet settings. I find that having these numbers and info will help when you set up X for the internet. If unsure how to do this....use the following 3 keys
"shift apple 3 " or shift apple 4. This will take a picture of the settings. As you probably know...the settings I am talking about are found under the apple. Go under the apple to control panels...then to internet and/or....internet.
This will help you when you set up for the new OS.
Any other questions...post back.......Go for it....She'll like it. Eventually she can upgrade the computer if needed......Take Care......mGb.......Jim

I have a 15' Macbook Pro, mid 2010 running Mavericks. I want to upgrade the hardware by increasing the RAM to 8GB and replacing the HD for a SDD one. What would be the best way to install mavericks on the new HD? I have the original OS X CD.
From what I read, I have 2 choices: 1. to install OSX and then upgrade to Mavericks, but I'm not sure if this would be possible (to upgrade directly from OSX to Mavericks); and 2. to use a software called Super Duper.
I wouldn't like to have to use a third party software to do this, so the question is: is there a better way to install directly the Mavericks not having to use a third party software?

Install the new drive in the computer.
Install the old drive in an external USB or Firewire enclosure.
Boot the computer from the Recovery HD on the external drive.
Use Disk Utility to partition and format the new internal drive.
Clone your external drive to the internal drive.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the Recovery HD on the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the Recovery HD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Using Disk Utility still opened.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

  • Best Way to Install CS6 Design/Web Premium Upgrade

    Hi,
CS6 Design/Web Premium Windows Upgrade (for CS5.5 Design Premium) is shipped and on its way for 5/10/12 delivery. Reading on these boards about CS6 installation problems (plus the installation difficulties for CS5 upgrade from CS4), prompt me to ask:
What is the best way to install the CS6 upgrade?
Is there a CS6 clean tool available?
I would ordinarily first deactivate and uninstall CS5.5 Design Premium.
Is this the best way to proceed?
    Regards,

If you do not want to keep a CS5.5 concurrent installation , this is the best way in my opinion.
The CS5.5 uninstallers do not remove everything of CS5.5 however. There will be e.g. left overs in the Help titles of the CS6 Help Manager. There is a cleaner tool: http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html

  • How to install Tiger OVER Leopard?

    Hi everyone,
So i just bought the brand spanking new Macbook Pros from the apple dealer the other day. I must say that i like it alot, but it came pre-installed with Leopard 10.5.
Now dont get me wrong, 10.5 is wonderful but i dont think i am ready for it yet because none of my programs that i use are compatible with it. As a result, i have a great computer with no programs to run.
I have decided i want to reinstall 10.4 back onto my harddrive and wipe out Leopard. I couldnt find anywhere in the apple shop that sold 10.4 (most likely because they are trying to phase it out), but i did find a copy of the Tiger installation disc that came with the PowerMac G5 (pre-intel) a few years ago.
I tried installing it, but it said "this program cannot be installed on this operating software". I basically just inserted the CD and double clicked "install" but i have a feeling the only way to get around this is to boot up the installation disc as a bootable disc, which i dont know how to do.
I have two quick questions for the seasoned veterans out there:
    1) How do i install Tiger over my Leopard?
    2) This is my first time using an Apple that is intel chip. Does Tiger have any complications with it?
Thanks so much guys, i really look forward to your responses.
    P.

You will have to contact AppleCare to obtain the Tiger installation discs required for your model. You cannot use a retail Tiger installation DVD or one from any PPC model. They will not work.
You might check with the software developers of your software to see if Leopard compatible versions aren't already available. Otherwise you might look for similar software that is compatible.
Most PPC-only software will run on Intel Macs via Rosetta emulation automatically.
If you do obtain the proper Tiger installation discs from AppleCare and decide to install it, then you will need to do an Archive and Install:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger, 4.6.2 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Best way to Install after installing new HD

Today I am installing a New WD 500GB Hard drive in my 2.16 core duo Macbook pro. I am trying to find the best way of installing osX. I have a Time Machine drive with back ups on it, but os X has ben acting kind of funny the past few days but i think it jest might be the HD witch is one of the reasons why i am getting the new one. Any input would be grate.

Wouldn't using the installtion disks work?
Or you could make a 10GB partition on the TM drive in Disk Utility, then clone over OS X Disk 1 to that partition and install from there. Unnecessary for this installation, but will make future reinstallations significantly faster and allow you to get a lean system whenever you want.
Then transfer the material what you want from TM onto the new install by Browsing other TM disks.
If you think there's a risk that TM has picked up any odd behaviour from the old disk, then I'd format TM after you've transferred what you need. Partition the TM drive into three partitions (if there's space): TM, system clone (using SuperDuper), and OS X disk. You could also add a fourth partition for a cleanly installed system with applications which makes reinstallations a breeze in the future.
    Just some thoughts.
    /p

  • What is the best way to install snapdrive to many hosts?

Hi all, Next weekend, I planed to install snapdrive to over 160 hosts. So what is the best way to install snapdrive? Over 160 UCS hots! I found "remote install" in snapmanager for Hyper-v. This is useful for me? Please let me know easy way to install snapdrive to so many hosts. Thank you.

The current generation of SnapDrive does not support remote installing to multiple hosts. What you saw about HyperV is simply limited to the HyperV host, so it's not remote to multiple hosts across the network.Since SnapDrive has a command line to install, you CAN however script the remote installation.I suggest you find out the exact installation command which works for your environment and use a program like psexec to remotely execute the installation command against multiple targeted servers. If you need help with the script, NetApp Professional Service can be engaged and can even come on site and do it for you, if needed. hope that helps,Domenico

  • HT1364 I just bought a new PC and now have ample space on my C drive to house my music Library which is currenlty installed on a external drive.  What is the best way to install and move the itunes library to my C Drive?

I just bought a new PC and now have ample space on my C drive to house my music Library which is currenlty installed on a external drive.  What is the best way to install and move the itunes library to my C Drive?

If the entire library is on the external drive then simply copy the iTunes folder into <User's Music> on the new computer, then install iTunes. If you've already installed iTunes you will want to remove the empty iTunes folder in <User's Music> first.
If it turns out you only have the media folder on the external drive then take a look at this post...

  • Installing tiger over os 10.0.2 and os 9.2

i'm really confused about this because i have had several different opinions about what will happen to my existing os's when i install tiger. to make sure i've been told correctly before i screw something up. the thing is, i need to keep os 9 on my computer because all of my graphic programs work with it (illust. photoshop, etc.) if i install tiger over this, will i not be able to use os 9, or switch to it in the start up disk and reboot?
is it true that i can't use the 'upgrade' feature because it only works with os 10.2 and up? would this be the safest option for me, so should i purchase the 10.2 upgrade and install the tiger upgrade from there? if so, where can i find the 10.2 upgrade?
re: archive and install feature...would i need at least the 10.2 operating system, too? if it archives your older os, can you ever reboot in an older os? if not, can you easily access the older os 9 to use the graphics files? any known complications of reading older files created in os 9 after the install of tiger?
sorry to sound so stupid about these things, but i'm a designer and therefore technically challenged! thanks for your help!

    artsenthusiast1:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You are correct in that Archive and Install is only available for OS X 10.2 and later.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
You will also need to purchase the Full Retail version of Tiger.
Be aware that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided as they can cause problems. Besides, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...
This is how I would go about accomplishing what you want to do:
    1. I would backup my entire HDD to an external FireWire Hard Disk Drive.
    2. Then I would completely wipe the HDD and reinstall beginning with OS 9 then Tiger.
    3. Then I would move back my data and third party apps from my backup.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to install boot camp

Hello, i got a MBP recently, and i would like to put boot camp on it, mostly so that i can play a online game (magic online) which is windows only, but isnt stressing on the video card, (just cards, nothing fast and flashy, so i would expect to be able to run it smoothly)
What is the best way to go about this? Am i able to get an external harddrive/ big flash drive to put windows on and then only have it on here when i need it, i dont really want to partition my internal drive, as it seems like that always leads to problems later on...
I guess what im asking, is you the people who use boot camp, what is the best/easiest/most reliable means of installation and use for boot camp. And where is the best to place to buy a windows cd for the installation (xp)
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Microsoft has gone to great lenghts hindering the user to install Windows onto external devices.
Googling through the net brings up some instructions on how-to do this nonetheless, but it is quite an effort.
Best way to install WIndows on your Mac for playing games would be the useage of BootCamp and by following the BootCamp Installation Guide to be found here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ or inside the BootCamp Assistant in OSX (in the Applications/Utilities folder).
    Regards

  • What is the easiest and best way to install or open flash drive in Sarfari on my Macbook Pro...2010 model using mountain lion

what is the easiest and best way to install or open flash drive in Sarfari on my 2010 macbook pro using mountain lion?

There is no really good way to do what you want. Any tracks you purchase via your own iTunes Store account are for your personal use, tied to your iTunes Store account, and can't be given to anyone else. If you don't want to gift the tracks to her and can't access her iTunes Store account, the only option other than creating her a completely new iTunes Store account (which will require a new email address for her) is to buy the CDs those tracks are on.

Hi. My G5 came without a built in Airport card. I've recently bought an Airport Extreme. What is the best way to install an Airport to a G5? Should I buy the Airport card from ebay or some other retailer & do the installation myself OR should I buy it & get somebody professional to install it?

Hello ajdoyle78. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The April 2005 and earlier Power Mac G5s are compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. The later Power Mac G5s (models: M9590LL/A, M9591LL/A, M9592LL/A) are not. Instead, these models require a special combo AirPort/Bluetooth card which must be installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).

What is the best way to install client for all computer
    thank u

You basically have 3 options, if you disregard a manual install.
    1. Client Push. Configure an account with local admin rights on the clients, and enable Site-Wide pushing of client.
    2. GPO. Import the GPO templates and enable the client to be installed that way
    3. Startup script.
Of the 3, I usually go with a combination of client push and GPO.
Take a look at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712298.aspx for the complete documentation.
