Best Way to Make Line Art From Scratch

Hi and I apologize if a basic question, but I've created a rather complex illustration, and I'm wondering if there's  a quicker way to go from y first attached image, to the transparent second. I feel as if I'm spending a lot of monotonous time following a pattern of Minus Front, and Make Compound Path to set the black background up for another round of cutouts. All black in the image is one filled shape encompassing the entire back of the drawing, while everything white is white fill blocking out the black space, or other white objects below.
How can I clean up my act? Or what would be a better strategy from the beginning to achieve transparent line art?
Sincerely thank you for your replies, I'm wasting far too much time here, I know it. Happy to clarify any left out details!

Your basic problem is you are not working methodically and planning as you go. You are drawing a large number of paths willy-nilly until the whole drawing is "done" merely in terms of how it looks on the screen and figuring you'll just deal with the inevitiable decisions of how it is technically organized later. Then you discover you've created an unwieldy and confusing number of objects which you hope to resolve into understandable (therefore predictable) simpler constructs as a last step.
It's far better to have in mind what kind of constructs and general organization you want to end up with and work toward that, completely finishing (trimming, unioning, etc.) each elaborate section accordingly as you go. That way you avoid confusing yourself and creating additional work later when you think you are finished with the line work and want to draw the fills. As you work, always keep in mind what kind of objects you are creating: Each path is either open or closed, filled or unfilled, stroked or unstroked, simple or compound.
Drawings like this may be organized several different ways. None is "right" or "wrong"; but you just create time-wasting frustration when you fail to plan for it:
All line art completely trimmed, without resorting to fills in one area to "hide" unwanted portions of the line work in another area. A separate stack of unstroked filled objects behind the line work to create the coloring. (This method can greatly simplify the issue of trapping.) Some users even prefer to create all the fills on one or more separate Layers (although it's not necessary to do so).
Line art drawn more willy-nilly, with the intention of resorting to LivePaint to do the trimming, filling afterward. Some users live and die by this method. I don't, because all such automated routines invariably create what would otherwise be unnecessary additional anchorPoints, and resulting fills merely "kiss" their adjacent line work, rather than underlay them. That can necessitate more elaborate trapping.
Line work and fills shared by the same paths. Sections of the artwork treated as separate Groups (helmet group, visor group, etc.) An advantage of working this way is that the resulting overlaps allow the relative positions of the pieces to be tweaked later.
Again, it's not that one organizational method is right or wrong; the point is that, like it or not, vector-based drawing is all about creating a stack of independent objects. That is fundamentally different from "painting" in a raster imaging program. By its very nature it imposes a need for intelligent organization of that stack. So you're far better off always at least generally planning for that unavoidable organization, regardless of which scheme you choose. The reckless abandon approach to drawing is antithetical to the nature of vector-based drawing.
For example, consider the leaf designs on the visor. As you've drawn them (evident in your second and third screenshot), they spread into an adjacent area where you intend them to be partially hidden by a white fill in front of them. There's nothing strictly "wrong" with working that way (although I consider it untidy) but it suggests you intend to build your drawing according to the third organizational scheme described above. But that conflicts with your trying to correctly resolve your line work by means of automated routines (outlining strokes, Boolean path operations) later whidh is more appropriate for the first organizational method described above. So using those automated features will in some places cause the unwanted portions to re-appear as the object stack changes (as you can see occurred in your third screenshot). So now you've got stuff that needs to be trimmed away. You've created additional work for yourself.
From where you are, based on your first screenshot, you could try this:
Select All
Object>Path>Outline Strokes
Select All
Pathfinder palette: Merge (unions touching fills of same color and punches overlapping objects of different color in one move)
Do the necessary trimming and correction of unwanted stuff that was previously hidden.
Do any necessary corrections of path direction or winding rule, or compounding to flip fills to voids or vice-versa.
Either create your fill objects behind the line work, or use Live Trace to create them.
Because of the runaway number of paths you have drawn, you may have difficulty doing the above set of steps. If so, try working it in several "sections"; for example, with the black pointer marquee select across half or a third of the drawing, do the steps, then repeat for the next third, and so on.
And don't worry...after you've done this kind of tedious after-the-fact cleanup on a few projects, you'll start to understand the principles of pre-planning the organizational structure of your drawings and start keeping that in mind as you proceed. We've all been there.

What is the best way to turn line art into a 3D image in Illustrator? Thanks for your help.

What version of Illustrator? What do you mean by "Line Art"? What do you mean by "3d image"? Post images showing your starting artwork and an example of what you are trying to achieve.
If you have Illustrator 12 or higher you can extrude or lathe a simple group or path using Effects > 3D > [Pick one]. You must start with vector data, not a placed raster image. You are very limited in what you can do, and you cannot model multiple objects within one 3D world. Each object you extrude/revolve/rotate is its own world, with its own perspective and camera. You can also make any art into a Symbol, then map that symbol onto any 3D surface you create. The results are, at best, acceptable, and often total garbage.

What is the best way to make a DVD from iMovie?
    I am using iMovie 06 (Naturally) with iDVD 08. I have always used;
iMovie 06, File > Share to iDVD 08. And got pretty good results.
Some say the best way is to quit iMovie 06, open iDVD and import the movie from the Media button.
I have tried both methods in the results look the same. I'm interested in getting the very best quality possible.

You likely have one of the most expensive media converter boxes on the market today.
But does it work well with most macs? (my guess is that it does). But more specifically can it "handshake" with an intel based mac? I personally haven't tried it.
But you may want to read this for yourself if you haven't already:

Assuming it works then the best format is .dv which this unit will support apparently.

  • Best Way to Make A Movie From Many DVDs?

I'd like to make a montage of select scenes from 20+ DVDs of raw footage using Premiere Elements 7.  I can't import all of these DVDs into the space I've got available on my hard drives.  I'd appreciate any recommendations for the best way to extract select scenes from these DVDs into smaller media files that I can then import into a project for final assembly.
I can imagine an approach of putting a single scene into a sceneline and rendering it into an importable file type, but I'm not certain which type to use that won't reduce image quality along the way.
Of maybe there's some whole other approach I'm missing, ie using Archive.
    Thanks!
    JGW

    JGW,
Thanks for the clarification and the details. A couple of thoughts:
1.) some of the hardware writers, similar to your deck, do not do the best job at writing to DVD-Video. Many have a rudimentary Menuing function built in. Since a .VOB can contain a lot of "stuff," besides just a multiplexed MPEG-2 stream, the way that they handle the construction can create problems, even for programs, like PE, that can Import and use a DVD-spec. .VOB. It is truely a "sometimes they work, but sometimes they do not." I do not know about the Toshiba. I do not even know about my Panasonic deck, as I have never had to try and work from one of its DVD's. They have always been an archival copy of a client's VHS, or similar. Both might do fine, but both might create poorly formed .VOB's. We'd both have to test this.
2.) while DV-AVI Type II does introduce a bit of compression (someday compare it's file sizes to a DV Uncompressed), it is visually slight. In the case of the MPEG-2's, that was where the quality took the hit. Going directly to DV-AVI will probably not be discernable from the MPEG-2 source files. Now, if you're going back to a finished DVD, remember that you'll be doing another MPEG-2 compression from PE (or most NLE's).
3.) one consideration for quality (at the expense of much more time) would be to do a recapture of your 8mm tapes. If one did this, it would require the camera, or a deck for those tapes. If the camera was a digital, even if the tapes were analog, and it connected via FireWire, PE might be able to do a perfect Capture. Again, one may, or may not loose "device control." If the camera was analog, then something like the ADS Pyro could do the work. Have to say that I doubt, but do not know, that one would have device control, but that's not a really big deal.
4.) there are other ways to rip a DVD. Here's a LINK to a workflow. It's certainly not the only way to do it, and this one is written around Adobe Encore, but should translate almost perfectly to PE, or PrPro.
There are also editing programs that use an MPEG-2 workflow and offer "smart rendering," which means that only footage, that has been altered, will be re-Transcoded to MPEG-2. Unfortunately, I use an exclusive DV-AVI Type II workflow and do not have a clue where to tell you to look for one of these programs. I'd guess that there are some freeware ones, and probably some inexpensive ones. I'm just not the guy to tell you anything about any of these.
As for external storage, the prices are getting amazingly low. On Friday, Fry's (Western states US) had a 1TB unit for US$89. I am ashamed to tell you what I paid for my first 1TB external. Even worse, you should see what I paid for my first 2TB RAID 5 NAS! FWIW, I have been a big fan of and have bought many of the Maxtor 1.5 and 2TB units. So far, not problems.
Steve, or Paul_LS might have some MPEG-2 to MPEG-2 editors for you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Best way to stop the screen from scratching?

Hi, under 2 months back I bought a 3G iPod. I love it to death, even more then the 4Gs. My only problem is, the screen keeps scratching! Are any good, cheap, screen protectors on the market?
I haven't ever abused it, it scratches with something in my pockets. It kinda annoys me.
    Thanks,

Hi, you might want to check out some Websites like 3btech.net or monoprice.com
They might have some cheap film protection for your iPod screen. If you want to get something better to protect the iPod and the screen, you might want to check out iFrogz(tm) nanowrapz, which is a protective silicon case for your iPod Nano 3rd Generation and it includes a protection film for the screen, too. The price is about $12 or cheaper.

You cannot get higher resolution by converting  the original. This goes for converting anything, not just iTunes purchases.
Creating an AIFF will simply make the file 10 time as large with zero increase in quality.
Don't really want to debate value of creating the new version.
    Agreed.
You are simply wasting time and drive space converting iTunes purchases to AIFF.

Wie exportiere ich am am besten einen Schnittlinie aus Photoshop? Ich bekomme von einem Wort immer nur den ersten Buchstaben exportiert, obwohl alles gerastert auf einer Ebene liegt.

What are you talking about exactly?
If you need to export vector data Photoshop is not the first choice but if you have Type Layers (without faux styles), Vector Masks or Paths it is possible.
    alles gerastert auf einer Ebene
does not seem to make sense in this context though.

  • Best way to make a Constant Power Load

What would be the best way to make a load that always draws the same amount of power whatever the voltage on it. For exemple, an load would draw 100 mA at 24 VDC, 150 mA at 18 VDC and 200 mA at 12 VDC. All I found is to use Nonlinear Dependant source.
Any easier way to do this? Thanks.

Sorry about the file mix up, I was anxious to get it posted for you that I failed to realize you were using a different version.
As far as the last "amplifier" in your Leaky Feeder design, I actually hooked it up to the 24VDC supply on the left and this was a direct connect before the first resistor.  I realize this is not what would be ideal for your application as probably you have only a certain place in the Leaker Feeder to tap off from. I would suppose this would be going into a different entry way off the main entry at an intersection so I do not know how my adjusting the placing of this would effect the results because it seems to me by doing this I have bypassed a bunch resistance in the Feeder cable itself (if that is what the resistors represent) and also bypassed a number of amplification stages in the process as well.
I will post a picture of my circuit for you to examine and try in Version 9.  This is the only thing I could come up with to where the power draw was the same no matter what the voltage input was. The only thing I can see as a drawback is that with this circuit the current remains constant but the voltage fluctuates. If I use a 24V regualtor and drop the input voltage to 12V the current remains at approx 118ma but the voltage drops to 12V when I plug it into your circuit.. I will let you try it and see what you may be able to do with it.

  • What is the best way to make a clickable grid

What would be the best way to make a clickable area that can
differentiate between discrete parts of the area when clicked on.
In other words, instead a having multiple buttons in a row that the
user can click on, is there a way to have an area that has lines to
distinguish the different areas(buttons) but that acts as though
    there were multiple consecutive buttons?
For example, if I wanted to graphically simulate the buttons
on a phone but without using buttons. Instead use some kind of grid
or area that is divided into multiple sub areas that can
distinguish the discrete positions (each button on the phone, or
    sub-area).
    Thank you,
    Salchichasa

I liek your idea of having multiple images in a grid. I think
that would be the best bet as you mentioned. Having one big picture
would be hard to distinguish the sub-areas with mouse coordinates.
I think checking the coordinates for the mouse would be very
tedious because I would have to check for the left boundary, the
right, top, and bottom for each sub-area!
What do you mean by using button components and reskinning.
Is this simply using buttons and changing the way they look? I'm
just trying to save time and memory, because if I had a 10 by 10
grid, thats a hundred buttons. Wouldn't that slow down the machine
alot? And for that matter wouldn't having a grid of 10 by 10 images
    also by the same deal?
Thanks for the input, I'm just trying to find the most
    efficient way to do it.

  • Best way to extract all images from Messages?

My iPad freaked out earlier today and unfortunately I had to do a recovery and restore (from iCloud backup).  I say unfortunately because I was 90% certain I was not backing up photos/video (and there was no way to check before doing the restore).  And indeed I had photo/video backup turned off.
I'm mostly back to normal now, except for all the lost photos/videos.  I've gone through some of Messages to Save ones I sent there.
What is the best way to extract all images from past Messages so I don't have to tediously load earlier messages?   I understand there are some programs that allow one to go through a local backup and go through messages.  But for this I suppose I'd first need to make a local backup of everything, no?  Are those programs able to extract just images I've sent or do they grab everything (i.e. images others have sent me?)
Related, before I did the initial restore could I have easily retrieved the photos/images on the device through some third-party solution?
Lastly, and semi-off topic.. What determines the image name for an image in Messages?   For example, I Copied a photo someone sent me via Messages and Pasted it three times back to her (all at the same time).   The image filenames are IMG_6447.jpg,  IMG_4820.jpg, IMG_0291.jpg.

Thanks Kirby.  I utilize Aperture 3 by reference instead of a compiled library.  So I have individual folder/projects stored on my laptop.  By exporting as a library, does Aperture bring these folders and related images "with it"?
What I don't want to lose is any post processing I do in the field which creates separate versions and/or .PSD files.
    Thanks for your continued assistance.
    Chris

  • How to use layer masks to separate line art from white background

How to use layermasks to separate line art from white background

Probably better to use Blend modes rather than a layer mask.  Try setting the blend mode of the line art layer to Darken for instance.  If you do want to use a mask, take a look at individual channels, and copy the channel with the best contrast.   Then load the selection  of that copied channel, select the line art layer, and add the layer mask.  You will probably need to invert the mask. You will probably find that the line art is a greyscale image, and need to go to Image > Mode > RGB before you can use Channels.

  • What is best way to make disk backup of CS5 downloaded installation?

    Hi,
We purchased the downloadable version of the CS5 Production Premium installer rather than waiting 2 weeks to receive it in box form.
What do you suggest is the best way to make a backup of the downloaded installers, which total about 13.8 gigs?  I was thinking of putting the main one on a dual layer DVD-R but the biggest file is 9.23 gb's, nearly a gig over the data limit for dual layer disks.  Is it possible to use Toast to split a disk image over multiple files or use Apple Disk Utility to compress the .dmg even further to fit?  Or perhaps is the easiest way to just copy it over to a USB thumb drive?
I know Adobe allows you to re-download the software whenever needed, but it would be more handy for us to have a backup here rather than wait for another really long download...
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!

You can buy a set of backup disks from Adobe for a nominal fee. You might want to give them a call and ask about it.
Otherwise, just back it all up to an external drive.
    Bob
