Best way to maximize sharpness of photo's

I notice when I drop jpgs into iWeb they loose sharpness. Is thier a way to maintain the sharpness. Is this a resize issue? Do photo's need to be resized and optimally sharpend external to iWeb to the exact size you need them in iWeb

Bear in mind that any image that is output by iWeb will become 72 dpi even if it was dropped into iWeb at a much higher resolution.

A File History backup archive whether TimeMachine which is fine I agree to use CCC as primary but I also like something else or combination, one for system, one for data. And multiple sets. And even then I have needed to go and find a file version or something and glad I had online backup of something besides a once a week clone, which would not have helped me.

  • What's the best way to transfer 11,000 photo's from my old mac to my new one?

What's the best way to transfer 11,000 photo's on iphoto to iphoto on my new mac.  I've just spent 24 hours importing them onlu for it to say there is not enough space available  - BUT I'VE JUST BOUGHT AN NEW UPGRADED MAC?

    Don't import them.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

I have ended up with two versions of i photo on the same laptop - just stored in different places. One has 30K photos and the other has 80K photos. What is the best way to merge the two photo libraries as whenever I try to do it - it ends up crashing.

no sure how you are doing it - the only way is to use the merge capability of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/

  • How is the best way to deal with duplicate photos

    I am using a new retina 27" iMac 16gb ram OS X 10.10.1
    Aperture 3.6
What is the best way to deal with duplicates that get in Aperture Vaults
I have used Gemini and it finds duplicates, but I have no way of telling if the original are still there.
I don't want to go through 15000 photos to try to find the duplicate.
    Thanks Charlie

You mean - one image in a vault, one in a library?  Or duplicates in the same library?
Photo Sweeper can scan several libraries or folders at the same time and display the duplicates side by side to let you pick which to keep.  You can define rules to mark photos for automatic deletion as well.

  • What's the best way to transfer just my photos from my MacPro(10.6.8) to my new 27inch retina display iMac

I have just purchased a new 27inch IMac and am cleaning out files etc from my MacBook Pro (circa 2010) with 10.6.8 OS. But the photos I want to keep in tact. Whats the best way to upload the photos onto the IMac - using time machine? or drag them over album by album?

I assume you have a home network. Connect both computers to your network. If possible do this using Ethernet for faster speed and better reliability. Configure your MBP for File Sharing. Use a copy program such as Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0.2 to transfer your entire folder of photos to your new machine.

  • Best way to organize a large photo library on a 10.6.8 Macbook?

I have an older Macbook pro- version 10.6.8.
I am looking for the best way to organize my large library of photos (approx. 15,000).  I have both personal as well as professional photos that I would like to organize and keep separately. I currently use iPhoto'09 version 8.1.2 but it has become very slow and I would like to find a solution that uses better organization.  I am considering keeping my personal photos in iPhoto and my professional photos in another organization app.  I was thinking about purchasing Aperture, however it is only available for Mac OS X version 10.7.5 or later and the same goes for the latest version of iPhoto.
I am a little confused about what my options are.  Can anyone recommend anything?  I am looking simply for a good organization tool, I am not interested in photo editing or anything beyond that.

Well now we know that the speed problem is in your old library. Repair it.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Backing Up:
Time machine will back up, yes. Just be sure it's set up correctly.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

  • Best way to make B & W photos?

    Hi,
There are two ways to make black and white photos and I am wondering if either is better than the other. They are:
    1. Shot the color shot and have iphoto turn it into a b & w shot.
    2. Set the camera, a Canon Rebel XT, to shoot the photo as a B & W shot.
I have not had time to test these methods in a methodical way. From what I have seen, when iPhoto converts a color shot into a b & W shot, it hasnt looked too impressive. Sort of bland.
On the other hand, using the camera to shoot in b & w mode seems to produce more expressive shots.
Is this what others have found? Or is iPhoto better at converting color shots into b & w and I am just doing it wrong?

  • What is the best way to back up my photos?

My time machine has not backed up my computer for several months and the external hard drive no longer works or turns on.  I have over 20,000 photos that I need to back up.  What is the best way to make sure I don't loose them.  Do I need a another external hard drive?  What brand? How much storage?  Thanks for an expert advice out there!

You should always back up any and all information you cannot afford to loose, or simply do not wish to loose.  So, yes, if your backup drive is dead, you should replace it, a.s.a.p.  Having an up to date backup is your only guarantee of recovering your files should your computer develop problems.
Ideally, get the biggest drive you can afford, but at least 2-3 times your hard drive size on your iMac.  The larger the TM drive, the further back in time you will be able to keep backups.
There are lots of good drives available - I have a WD mybook 1TB USB2 drive as my current TM drive and it has worked flawlessly since I got it in 2009.  Other world computing (http://eshop.macsales.com) also sells some great drives - I have one of their Mercury Elite Pro's (also 1TB) and it has been superb as well.

  • Best way to import folders of Photos and keep folder name?

    Hi,
Is there a way to import folders containing photos into iphoto so that once it copies into iphoto it shows up as a named album?
    OR
do always you have to create a new album, name it and then add pics to it?
    OR.....
Is there an easy way using iphoto to merge 2 different libraries into one?

In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events, uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from Finder.
Then drag a folder of images to the Albums heading in the iPhoto Window and the pics will be imported and an Album of the same name will be created.
Is there an easy way using iphoto to merge 2 different libraries into one?
Using iPhoto? No. Using the paid version ($20 approx) of iPhoto Library Manager, Yes.

  • Best way to send files like photos wireless from Macbook to iPhone/Ipad? And Then vice versa?

What are the ways to send files like photos wireless from Macbook to iPhone/Ipad? And Then vice versa?

    Just one comment on this:
‘If I have, say, an older version of iPhoto but a newer version of one on my new Macbook Pro, will it still transfer photos no problem?’
the problems are ALWAYS in the reverse way, when you have the newest (or a newer) version of a given app, and wish to transfer its library to an older version.
Otherwise, see the link to Pondini.
I have been using Martin Jahn’s iBackup, with which I have become accustomed and works fine. It also makes daily backups. Its advantage over other apps is that you may add whatever you wish to save, beside its default settings (which you may delete or cancel, of course, even if not recommended); it also has a friendly interface and easily customizable. Of course, this is a personal view, you may try other methods as well, or other backup apps. All are good if you are satisfied and correspond to your needs.

  • Best way to insert non-flash photo album in Dreamweaver CS5.5

Using Dreamweaver CS4, I created my wife's art website.  It is:  www.tanglewoodbrushstrokes.com
To insert photo albums, I used Bridge and Fireworks.  Once past the initial learning curve, I was able to create these albums fairly easily.  However, these albums have two limitations that I would like to address.
    1.  Adding or deleting an image requires creating a new album and then posting it on the page.  Now that I have practice, it doesn't take me very long to do this but there must be a simpler way.  As you will see on my wife's site, she has many pages of photo albums.  Moving photos from her "Recent Creations" page means those images my be disbursed over three or four different albums.  So this can be very time consuming.
    2.  The albums created in this manner are flash galleries and are not visible on Iphones or Ipads.
I recently purchased Dreamweaver CS5.5 so I could use HTML5 in order to make my site work on Iphones and Ipads as well as PC's.  I have nearly completed the tutorial and am about ready to create a new site.  Today I have done some searching for ways to use non-flash galleries and have not come up with a definitive answer.
As you can see on my wife's website, the galleries are fairly simple.  All I really need is a page of thumbnails leading to a larger image with a description.  I want to keep it that way.
    Any suggestions?

There is no one size fits all solution to this.  You're using DW to make a gallery and it's not really a gallery creation tool per se.  It's web authoring software.  So whichever gallery solution you choose it's going to come from someplace else.  And then you must integrate it into your HTML pages.
Personally, I really like dynamic slideshows with jQuery.  Add some PHP code to your page.  Upload jQuery   scripts and optimized images to your server.  Done.
To swap images later, add/delete files from image folder on server. Done.
You can see a live demo of this below:
    http://alt-web.com/DynamicSlides/
    http://jalbum.net/
If you want to generate a lot of different galleries quickly, look at JAlbum.  It's a commercial product that creates the thumbnail images & HTML pages for you.  There are lots of skins (styles) to choose from and you can further customize layouts with CSS.

  • Best way to scan in old photos? Service? Feed scanner?

I would like to bring a large number of film prints into my digital life. I cannot bear the thought of using a flatbed scanner for several hundreds of photos (if not more). I figure I have two choices: 1) a service I mail photos to and they send me digital files or 2) buy a scanner that has a feeder. Would appreciate suggestions on either account. If a service, appreciate any recommendations. If a scanner, any suggestions on make/model would be greatly appreciated as it seems there is not much info on which scanners (or multi-function printers) perform that task well. Many thanks!

I am one of those people who has scanned in thousands of photos ! I have about 15000 photos, and probably about 9000-10000 are scanned in. I actually DID use a flatbed scanner. Wore out the first one, an HP so that it began to burn in the flat ribbon band lines. Got an inexpensive Epson perfection 2480
http://pcworld.about.com/news/Jul262004id117057.htm that can scan photos and slides and have been very happy with it. It is an older model, but I am sure there is a comparable newer model.
It actually went much faster than I had thought. I placed 4-6 photos on the scanner at one time, depending on the size of the photos. First did a preview to see all of them, then did the scan of each one onto my desktop. When the desktop appeared full, I imported them into iPhoto Libraries according to the years they were taken.
I DO have all of my photos in photo albums, labeled on the inside front cover what time span the album encompasses, so it was quite easy to keep the photos in the correct order.
The Epson has a color corrector that I used if it appeared that the photo had become discolored. You might give it a try before you just turn over your photos to a service. What if they lose them? Mix them up with someone else's? Just be sure the service is reliable, and not exhorbitantly expensive. Have you seen this?:
http://www.scanmyphotos.com/ That looks quite good! I may consider doing that with some of my slides, as this is just too much to do myself.
I have not used a feeder type of scanner, but if I have to sit there and make sure the photos are feeding correctly, I may as well just be scanning them individually. See these for reports of problems/issues/use of them:

Technically, probably the best method is to scan negatives because you can get a more clear image. Although I have most of the negatives of my snapshots, the negatives are not in any particular order and are more difficult to visualize to determine if I even want to include a particular one. I decided it was too much trouble to try to oranize the negatives, and just went for scanning in the photos.
There was a terrific article last year about scanning photos, from MacWorld:

  • Best way to import iphoto-formatted photos on dvd

I was trying to eliminate duplicate photos, so used a program that identified 1,400; I then burned these onto DVD before deleting. I now think the program misidentified some duplicates, so I want to re-import the photos.
Out of caution, I burned them in two formats, on two different disks: as an iPhoto folder and as exported photos.
How do I best re-import these photos into my library? I assume the iPhoto-folder disk would retain the most metadata. Can I just "select all" of the photos on the disk (within iPhoto, not the Finder), then drag them back into the library? Or is there more to it?

If you import them from the iPhoto library disk using iPhoto you will get the original file, the modified file if it had been edit, and all metadata, i.e. keywords, titles, locations, etc. This video shows how:
Insert the disk in the optical drive and launch iPhoto. Look for the disk in the left hand pane of iPhoto. find the photo(s) you want and drag them to the Events or Photos icon above.
