Best way to monitor virtual-access flaps ?

Hi,
I'm seeing regular virtual-access interface flaps. Is there a good way to keep a count of these? I could monitor the syslog and increment a counter however there must be a more elegant way to do this. I can't find an OID or show commands which gives me what I'm looking for. Any ideas?
Ryan

I think your initial idea is a good one.  If you have a syslog that you can track, count the number of flap conditions you see.  This is actually fairly elegant as you can then use that counter in other EEM policies to take additional action.

I recently added my old mac hard drive to a new macbook with an SSD as my main OSX drive. I am having trouble with permissions in viewing my old hard drive, when I save a permission when I reboot the full access is changed again .  What is the best way to get complete access to my old hd installed in my new Macbook?

Open the Get Info window for the old drive. Click the Lock icon on the bottom of that window and type in your password. In the permissions area click the Plus sign ( + ) and Add your Username to it and set it to Read & Write. Close that window. you should now have full access to all the files.

Well, given your situation, the best option is the Matrox MXO and Apple Cinema Display. I have a full review here as to why it is a good solution.
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/MXO.php
This will cost you $995 for the MXO, and $900 for the Apple display. So under $2k. The other options are more expensive. Broadcast quality HD LCDs start at $3500. And other capture cards range from $295 (decklink Intensity) to $3500 (AJA and Decklink). And HDTV will still require a capture card, like the Intensity with HDMI out, but won't be suitable for broadcast quality. It will, however, be perfectly fine for seeing what your HD footage looks like on an HD set that most people will have in their homes. So I take back my initial statement and say that if you have a tower, the Intensity and HDTV is your best option...if you aren't needing full broadcast quality. If you just need to see what it looks like.

  • Best way to monitor the ON time of something in a minute ?!

    Greetings everybody,
I first have to thank everybody offers help to others here.
I have a question regarding the Best way to monitor the ON time of something in a minute.
Say I have an On/Off switch that I want to know how many seconds that it was ON in the last minute (say) .. and reports that to a file or database each minute. So every minute I send a report to the DataBase with the number of seconds the switch was ON in the last minute.
I already made a solution, But it's not that good I think and there is a problem there .. Please check my VI as it describes the solution more than my words here.
    Any comment is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Ayman,
I attached a changed version of your vi. It uses two parallel loops.
The communication is made via local variable and controled by a flag.
Just have a look to get the idea.
You can do the communication also on different ways like queues...

  • What is the best way to monitor taffic across a Campus?

I am trying to find the best way/ways to monitor traffic across a campus network. The two solutions I have thought of are using Netflow or ERSPAN. However, neither are supported by the devices in this network. Here is a quick overview of the network...
Core Switches (3750 Stacks) using Layer 3
    |
Distribution Switches (3750 & 3650s) using L3 towards Core and L2 towards Access
    |
Access Switches (Mostly 3500s) using L2
What are the best options for monitoring traffic on this type of network? All links between switches are Gig, so we have plenty of bandwidth. I would really like to be able to setup snort/ntop or something similar.
Are there any solutions available that I could use RSPAN and a monitoring computer at the Access Switches and have them report back to a central monitoring machine? I would prefer a centralized solution.
    Thanks,
    Garrett

    Hello Garrett
Each monitoring software has its own limitations/specifications..
If you want to monitor traffic/protocols running on ur network, on a constant basis, you will have to use Netflow.. You can use a simple netflow collector, and collect reports, and analyze the application traffic on your LAN/WAN.. Not sure if this will help too much in troubleshooting, since this will be more used for trending your applications. You can probably discover new applications, which arent used much on your network, using this..
But for real troubleshooting, you will need something like a syslog server.. u can configure logging levels and push important errors/updates from the cisco gear to this box. In case your box goes down, or has issues, system log messages will be dumped to this server and will be a very useful device for troubleshooting... eg, kiwi cat, solarwinds, 3cdaemon, and lots of other freewares...
I would ideally have both these components on my network, for trending and troubleshooting..
apart from this, if you have other advance technology products, like wireless, application accelaration etc, there are other network management solutions available..
Hope this helps.. All the best.. rate replies if found useful

  • Best Way to monitor standby, primary databases, including alert logs, etc.

Hi, Guys, I finally cutover the new environment to the new linux redhat and everything working great so far (the primary/standby).
Now I would like to setup monitoring scripts to monitor it automatically so I can let it run by itself.
    What is the best way?
I talked to another dba friend outside of the company and he told me his shop not use any cron jobs to monitor, they use grid control.
We have no grid control. I would like to see what is the best option here? should we setup grid control?
And also for the meantime, I would appreciate any good ideas of any cronjob scripts.
    Thanks

    Hello;
I came up with this which I run on the Primary daily, Since its SQL you can add any extras you need.

  • Best way to store and access all my media over network?

With nearly 500GBs of music, movies and TV in my iTunes library, my G5's hard drive is just about full. And since I tend to watch everything on my significantly faster Macbook Pro via Front Row, it means I have to keep my G5 up and running all the time. Which feels like a huge waste of energy.
So... what's the most efficient way to store and access my media? Here are some ideas off the top of my head. If anyone has any better ideas, please share...
IDEA 1: BUY A TERABYTE EXTERNAL DRIVE AND CONNECT TO MY AIRPORT EXTREME'S USB PORT.
    Pros...
1.) No need to keep my G5 up and running all the time, just the router and the external drive connected to it.
2.) All media stored in one iTunes library which can be accessed by any wireless Mac on my network.
    Cons...
1.) I have no idea if this would even work.
2.) Would the USB connection be fast enough to play HD content?
3.) Would the Extreme's b/g signal be fast enough?
4.) Would my Macs even recognize an iTunes Library on a USB hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme with no OS of its own?
5.) Even if it were fast enough, could two separate Macs share the same iTunes library?
6.) I'd have to lose my wireless printer, which currently occupies the single USB port in my Airport.
IDEA 2: BUY AN APPLE TIME CAPSULE AND USE ITS INTERNAL DRIVE AS MY ITUNES LIBRARY
    Pros...
1.) The internal SATA drive will certainly be faster than any external USB drive.
2.) Get to keep my USB port for wireless printing.
    Cons...
1.) Still don't know if it would work.
2.) Would not be able to take advantage of faster 802.11(n) speed, as my G5 tower is b/g only.
3.) Pricey. $500 for a Time Capsule seems excessive not being able to take advantage of n speed boost.
IDEA 3: BUY AN APPLE TV
    Pros...
1.) I could watch HD content on my beautiful 30 inch Apple Cinema Display!
2.) I could access all my content wirelessly through my network.
3.) I get to keep my wireless printer wireless.
    Cons...
    1.) I don't own a TV.
2.) I don't know if Apple TV will even play on my 30 inch Apple Cinema Display.
3.) I don't know if my Macbook Pro will play files from Apple TV.
4.) Apple TV doesn't come with a Terabyte hard drive.
5.) I'm not sure I really understand what Apple TV is. (With a 30 inch Cinema Display, doesn't buying a TV seem redundant?)
IDEA 4: SELL MY G5, BUY A TIME CAPSULE, AND HOPE NO ONE EVER STEALS MY MACBOOK PRO.
    Pros...
1.) Can take advantage of that speedy wireless (n) network.
    Cons...
1.) Still don't know if a wireless iTunes library stored on a router would work.
2.) What will I do with my 30 inch Apple cinema display?
3.) No backup computer if something ever goes wrong.

    Perfectly possible:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Back up to the 2TB drie:
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • Best way to configure database access - direct or intermediary

    Hi there all,
I'm brand new to Java but have done a fair bit of php
what is the best way to architect a multi user applications connection to a database (from both performance and reliability)
The way I see it I have 2 options:
Every client application has a built in database connection string and performs its own queries interacting directly with the database.
    Or
Clients use sockets/web service (which is better?) to connect to a multi threaded server app that then handles the request and performs the SQL query on the database and returns the results
    Thanks in advance
    Tyrone

It's going to depend on your business model isn't it? Can you do client server or do you have to do n-teir?
Do you have middleware that you want to use and do you want any type of middle teir that keep business rules.
Can you make your DB visible to the end user or are you prohibited?
Generally: if you are going to expose to the web, then you want as much security between your data and the client as possible, so n-teir will win out there in many instances.

  • What's the best way to monitor rMBP temperature

I have istat, Ultra Fans, SMC Fan control and xscan.  Not a single one of them consistently reports the same termperature.  I'm at a loss to understand why I bother with any of them as all appear to report differnetly.  Is there a better alternative within the OS?  Surely Apple has a builtin method of monitoring termperature.

Temperature Monitor provides a view of all sensors and can be adjusted to display the specific sensors you wish to monitor.  Istat, Ultra fan and SMC source data from specific sensors but not always the same sensor.  Once I instralled Temperature Monitor it became apparent each of the programs was gathering data from potentially different sensors.  While I was originally frustrated and belieiving the programs were reporting incorrect information they were in fact accurately reporting the sensor information they were accessing.  The beauty of Temperature Monitor is it gives you a view of all sensors.

  • Best way to handle user access levels with spring.

I'm a spring newb, and I'm not sure how to properly handle user access levels with a validation controller. There seems to be a lot of information out there about creating simple login validators but like I've said I need to create multiple levels of user access. I could throw something together but i want to do it correctly. Does anyone here have any links to resources or information they could provide?

  • Best way to monitor health of DB XML?

    Hello:
We're going to be using DB XML in production and would like to monitor it for errors. Is there a good way to do this? For example, we parse the logs of some programs looking for keywords, but it doesn't look that strategy would work for DB XML.

    Hi,
It depends what language you are using. In case of Java you may look into JavaDoc (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17276_01/html/java/index.html)
    Useful methods are:
    EnvironmentConfig.setErrorStream()
    EnvironmentConfig.setErrorPrefix()
    EnvironmentConfig.setErrorHandler()
    XmlManager.setLogCategory()
    XmlManager.setLogLevel()
If you look into Javadoc of those methods, you may find some additional useful information.
C++ API of course has analogous counterparts
    Hope that helps,

  • What's the best way to monitor VPN connection setup in a mesh?

We have 24 Cisco ASA connected in a mesh using IPsec VPN tunnels.  From our hub location we have Sitescope monitoring each firewall and VPN tunnel to that firewall by ping its inside interface.  That works great from the hub location and is more of a hub and spoke model but this is a meshed VPN and I need to monitor the other sites. I don't want to put Sitescope servers in all locations nor would I do that. What are people using these days to monitor thier VPN tunnels?  How do you know when a location can't talk to another location?  Looking to be proactive here and not wait for an office to notify me that a tunnel is down.

  • Best way to monitor audio for web

99%of my projects are for the web and I've been using studio headphones to monitor my audio levels and balances but lately I've noticed that the headphones may be too precise. Fine tuning balances for reproduction with quality headphones. Now I've been adjusting the audio using external powered studio speakers for balances between VOs, music, ambient noise and interviewer's levels.
Since all of the projects will be viewed on computers or laptops I figured using headphones might be too acurate and went to external speakers. Is this wrong?
    db

I'd first do a pass with quality monitor speakers, then a review with qualtiy headphones (for fine details you might miss otherwise) and then do a final pass or 2 playing it out as you'd expect it to be monitored in real life, perhaps on laptop speakers.  If I'm outputting for the web, I usually do a normalize to 0db to the final mix so it will play as loud as possible.
