Best way to move to a larger external hard drive

Hi everyone, I currently have my masters on an external hard drive and want to move them to a larger hard drive.  What is the best way to move them so that aperture will still be able to find them?  Just clone the drive using something like carbon copy?   Can I just start using the new larger hard drive and not have to take any other steps? Thanks.

I have a Macbook Pro with the latest OS X Yosemite
Can anyone tell me the best way to easily view thumbnail images on the external hard drive because at present I am having to open each folder and would ideally like to see all thumbnail images in similarity to what Adobe Bridge has! (I have not got Adobe Bridge).
    Any pointers or advice please?

  • Advice on best way to set up 500 GB external hard-drive - scratch & back-up

    Hi all -
I would like to get some advice on how to best set up my new 500GB external hard drive. I do lots of video editing, so my primary use for it is as a scratch disc. However, i like to have a back-up clone for emergencies so in the past I have always had a partitioned external. One for back up, one for media. Now that Leopard has the time machine feature, i have read that some people like to use one volume on their external for TM and the other for a bootable clone (using Carbon Copy cloner). Doing this will take up a lot of space on my hard drive and I really need it for media storage. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to set this up? If I had a clone on one volume, could i then put Time Machine on my Media volume and call it a day?
Thanks so much for any feedback!
    Karen

You've essentially said that you're concerned about not having enough disk space for everything you do. I suggest a 2nd drive, as there is no partitioning scheme that's going to create more space for you. I'd set up one drive with 2 partitions - a bootable partition and a partition for TM. I'd dedicate the second drive to media. I wouldn't put TM and media on the same partition; in time <grin>, Time Machine will fill the partition.
And by the way, imho you should turn TM off anytime you are capturing, rendering or exporting; you don't want it using system resources (CPU, RAM or I/O) while you're doing those tasks.

  • What is the best way to  back up iTunes excluding external hard drive

*iTunes gives you the option of backing up your library on CDs. It would take me 100s of CDs to back up my library. Is there any other way to back up excluding external hard drive? Can you put music on a DVD and fit more than on a CD? Having just had to reload my whole computer, I would like some advice. I put my iTunes libary on an external hard drive. When I wiped that hard drive clean, it also took out my iTunes on my C drive! I had to buy a program that would save the songs from my iPod and put them back in iTunes.*

  • Best Way to Move OS to a New Hard Drive?

I currently have two internal hard drives in my G5 (a 160 GB, original System disk, and a 320 GB, which I installed myself). The disks are both reaching their capacity. What I would like to do is replace the 160 GB drive with the 320 GB drive and then install a new, larger hard drive in the second bay.
If I copy everything from both drives onto an external drive, and then copy all of the 160 GB drive contents to the 320 GB drive, will this work? That is, will the MacOS copy properly in this way?

To replicate your startup volume use the Restore option of Disk Utility. This will make a bootable clone. The clone should be to either a separate drive or a separate partition on another drive (the partition will be erased.) The partition or drive needs to be large enough for the data usage on the source drive which in your case sounds close to 160 GBs.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the backup drive.
Source means the 160 GB startup drive.

Logic is designed to run from your Applications folder. I suspect if Logic was moved to an external drive, it might not be able to locate its assets, like loops and libraries.
As long the necessary files are in the correct places on the boot disc, you can run the Logic application itself fom wherever you like. It would not be recommended however, and there would be very little benefit (if any) in doing so.

  • What's the best way to move a project from my hard drive to someone else's hard drive?

I've read lots of related discussions concerning problems after copying/importing/whatever, so I want to avoid those.  I have worked on a project since its inception.  It is currently in RoboHelp 8 HTML with several dozen LINKED Word documents and a couple of PDFs.Someone else is about to take over maintenance.  What's the recommended sequence, please?

Assuming the project is not under any form of source control, simply copy the source to a shared drive and let your colleague know when it is available. Just make sure they copy it to a local drive before they edit anything.

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

  • What is the best way to backup a 1 Terabyte external USB drive?

In order to keep my MacBook Air running speedily along and to free up space, I use this strategy to store my iTunes Library on an external USB drive.
I'm trying to think of the best way to backup a 1 Terabyte external USB drive. I'm told the hardware has a product life of about five years and some say to burn DVD-R discs of it as a backup, but that would require many discs.
Has anyone explored the viability of using FTP in conjunction with AWS (Amazon Web Services) to backup the iTunes Library to the cloud? Their file storage is quite cheap.
Any thoughts on the most effective way to backup an external USB drive?
    Thanks!

For a simple clone use Disk Utility's Restore option:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Others will suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.

  • HT1751 i bought a new, larger external hard drive. copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive. iTunes will not start or run unless old hard drive plugged in.??

I bought a new, larger external hard drive. I have my iTunes library on the external drive instead of C: drive, Using Windows 7.
I copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive.
iTunes will not start or run unless the old hard drive is plugged in.
If I disconnect the old drive iTunes shuts down.
    Any ideas. ??

    Hello kskip,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.

  • Recently moved itunes/iphoto libraies to new, larger external hard drive...

Had large itunes/iphoto libraries that had resided on an external hard drive connected to my imac. These were backing up to a time capsule. Recently moved both libraries to a new, larger external hard drive. When Time Machine goes to back up, it is now trying to back up everything again, not just anything that is new. This is about 300 GB of music/movies/photos that were already backed up, and it is now trying to completely backup all this again. 2 300 GB backups will take up a lot of my TC. Should I just let it go? Do I have a possible issue with space? Just want to be sure I do the right thing....

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.
