Best way to move to an external boot drive

I going to move my main iMac boot drive to an external as I need to be able to pick it up and go and use it on the move with my MBP.
What is the best way to clone the iMac's internal and then put it on the external. Both drives are 320GB in size.
Can I use CCC or should I use disk utility from the boot DVD to create an image and then restore it to the external? My thinking behind the Boot DVD way is that nothing will be running when I do it...
Regards

Normally doesn't matter. The code running the machine is stored in RAM. CCC and other cloning apps duplicate what's stored on disk. The only problem you might run into is if you try to save something while you're cloning. For your purposes, since you're doing this for the first time, run CCC, and go get a coffee and a danish. Or, just watch what's taking place.

  • Best way to move files to external hard drive

    Hi All,
My internal hard drive is nearly full.  I''ve bought a 2TB external hard drive to copy my Aperture library to.
I'm working on a 27" iMac (10.6.8), with a 1TB hd and Aperture 2.0.  External hard drive is an Omega eGo with firewire 800 (Mac Format).
Looking at some of the posts here, its seems that the simplest method is to copy the library (drag and drop) to a folder on the external HD.  Then double click to open, at which point this will be the default library.  After checking all ok, delete the original library.
I've also read suggestions that running your library on an external hard drive compromises speed, and that the files should be referenced externally with the library running internally for maximum performance.
Can anyone give me some advice as the best method to work work from the external hard drive?  All my files are currently managed (around 820 GB)
I like the idea of something so simple as drag and drop to change my library's location, the delete the old one. but if I'm going to switch to external hd, I'd like to set it up correctly, from the start.
    Thanks for your help.
    Richard

Why not do this. Copy the library over to the external drive, leave the library on the internal drive alone for the moment and run off the external library.
If Aperture performs OK for your needs leave the library on the external and delete the library on the internal drive. During this period of testing you could switch between the two in order to get  a real fell for how one performs over the other.
If it turns out that  having the library on the external drive is causing problems then keep the library on the internal drive and switch to a referenced master setup with the masters on the external drive.
Remember that while you are testing this out and switching between the two libraries changes made to one library ill not be reflected in the other. So just use this time for testing and make sure any work you do in one library you can redo in the other.

  • Best way to move files to external drive in LR 5. Drag and drop or export, if drag and drop

Best way to move files to external drive in LR 5. Drag and drop or export, if drag and drop can I put all the dated folders into one single folder

Drag and drop should do the job. Or move the files (or folders) in your operating system and then re-link via http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
Yes, you can put all the dated folders into a single folder (but if you plan to do this, then don't try move the files using your operating system and re-link)
Export most definitely isn't the solution.

  • Best way to move iTunes library from network drive to NAS drive?

    Hi all,
I need to move my iTunes library which currently lives on a Buffalo network drive to a new Synology NAS drive.
What is the best way to move the library?
    Thanks,
    Ed

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Whats the best way to move files from a hard drive that wont boot?

I made a bootable USB disk and it appears to work fine. I can still read and open files on the old disk (admin account only) from the new USB drive the old one doesn't boot. I don't have a backup but would like to move files to the USB and then reformat the old drive.
Whats the best way to capture the data?
There are four user accounts on the old drive. Only one on the new drive so far. Do I need to set up four accounts on the new drive in order to copy data from each?

Time Machine is for making backups and restoring ones it previously created. It doesn't restore data backed up or copied in other ways. In your case, it's better to use a cloning utility or manually drag the files than it is to use Time Machine.

  • What is the best way to move photos to external drive?

My internal drive is filling up and I'd like to move my photos in iPhoto onto an external hard drive, but stil view them in iPhoto?
What is the best way to do this?

You can copy your entire iPhoto library to the external drive. You can find it in your user library.
After copying it over, start iPhoto with the option key depressed. It might be the Control key instead so try that if the option key doesn't work. This wil give you the option of selecting a different iPhoto library. Navigate to your external har drive and select the iPhoto library you copied there. iPhoto will, in the future, continue to look for the library on the external drive every time you start iPhoto. You will not have to navigate there again, iPhoto will find the library as long as you do not move it and the drive in on and connected.
Once iPhoto is finding the library on the external drive you can delete the library on your internal drive to free up space there.

  • Best way to set up on external hard drive?

    Hi,
when I got my macbook and logic pro 9 i was advised about having an external harddrive as this would take up some of the cpu load. I've just installed pro 9 on my macbook and it does seem to take up a lot of usage with the 'disk too slow' message appearing a lot.
I've got a firewire (only 400 i'm afraid but with a 7200 disk speed)external harddrive coming in the next day or two and the question I'm asking is how to best set up logic on the external card to minimise the load on the macbook.
Do I install the whole thing on the external harddrive or just set up a folder for the loops/completed projects?
Sorry if this has been asked a zillion times but I've searched through the previous threads and couldnt find a specific answer.
    Thanks, Jim

The easiest solution is the latter: save your projects to the external drive (with "Assets" checked).

  • Best Way to Protect Data on External Firewire Drives?

I have a number of external firewire drives on my IMac and like many others have experienced data loss due to various things.
What I've just started to do is use certain of these drives, external USB drives too, just for backup, not to work on. I put the video work on there each day and then dump the drive in the Trash, turning it off, so that their files can't be corrupted.
With my other firewire drives I do the same: dump in the trash and turn the drives off. I don't unplug the firewire cables, just dump the drives in the trashcan and turn them off. When I want to use a particular drive I turn it on and it comes up on the desktop.
I have at times restarted and then powered the external drives on.
My question is: which is the safest way to do this? is it okay to trash a drive, turn it off and then switch it back on when needed?
Thanks so much for any help!

I have been doing what you describe for years now, and have never experienced a problem. When the drive is not needed for a while, I eject it and power it off. You can also disconnect it from the Mac and unplug the drive physically, if you want extra "protection" against, say, a power surge or some other malfunction that might damage the powered off (but still connected) drive, but I would think those types of events are very highly unlikely.
People might debate whether the risk of wearing out the firewire or USB ports from repeatedly inserting and removing the cables is greater than the risk of some damage when connected to the Mac but powered off. Either one is infinitesimally small, I believe, and neither has probably been accurately measured.

  • IIS 8.5 - What's Best Way to Move INETPUB directory to Another Drive?

Does anyone have step by step process moving IIS 8.5 INETPUB directory to Another Drive? Running Windows Server 2012 R2.
    Thanks.

Moving that folder is very straight forward. Unlike some folders relating to windows services, the standard inetpub folder is simply the default location that sites run from, it doesn't define where new sites go when you set them up.
So, simply create your new inetpub folder on the required drive, and give it the same permissions as the standard one as a baseline. When you setup new sites you're asked to enter the path that the site will be found, at which point you simply point to the
site to the relevant folder on your chosen drive.
If you already have sites configured in IIS, simply copy the data over to the new destination, configure the permissions to the same as the source folder, and then in IIS select each site on by one, on the right hand pane click on Basic Settings... and then
edit the Physical path to where the new folder is. Once you've done that the site will be using the new folder. You can then removed the old folder, though personally I'd wait until you've had chance to fully test it and ensure everything is working as it
should be (eg you haven't missed any permissions).

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

  • Best way to move to a larger external hard drive

Hi everyone, I currently have my masters on an external hard drive and want to move them to a larger hard drive.  What is the best way to move them so that aperture will still be able to find them?  Just clone the drive using something like carbon copy?   Can I just start using the new larger hard drive and not have to take any other steps? Thanks.

To move Aperture library read this.
Scroll down until you reach Aperture because this one site tell you how to move a bunch of libraries.

  • What is the best way to move multiple formats of songs/photos/podcasts to a new computer?

For most of my life, I have used my family's home Windows desktop to establish my iTunes account with my iPod Classic (5th gen). On this computer I have:
    iTunes store purchases
    CD imports
    Other MP3 files
    Podcasts
    Photos downloaded from online
Now I am in college in another city, and I won't be able to come home much, so I'm setting up iTunes on my laptop as my new "home base", as it were. I've already authorized it under the same account that I use on my desktop. What is the best way to move all of this stuff from my old computer to my new one? I'm thinking an external hard drive is the best decision, but I want the input of the Apple community. You guys are much more knowledgable than I am! Thanks!

    Hey Alayna,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities, and thanks for the question! I'm not really in a position to recommend a "best" option, as there are several different ways to go. You can read over your options in the following document and decide which one works best for you:

  • What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage

What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage?

Check the formatting. It need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). This is also known as HFS+.
FAT32 and NTFS formatting will not work with iMovie.
If necessary, you can reformat using Disk Utility.
Make one large partition. No need for multiple partitions.
Do moves or copies to the external drive through iMovie as detailed in iMovie Help. If you move Events in the Finder, they may become unlinked from the projects that use them.
