Best way to network 3 MACs to DSL?

I'm looking at going from dialup to Embarq (prev Sprint) DSL. I have a 4 yr old G4 PowerPC with ext. wireless card, Power Book G4 with built-in wireless card and iMAC (my wife's) with no wireless capability. All are running OS X 10.4.8. Would be nice if could connect an HP LaserJet 3330 (now connected to my wife's Mac) to the network too. What is the best hardware configuration and the best equipment to get? Embarq sells routers. Is that the way to go? Also where can I find simplified instructions on doing the setup? What about security protection? I'm sure this info has been posted many times. Please point me the right direction. Thanks Terry

I'm wondering if it would work as a starter for
connecting a DSL modem from Embarq to it and get
started on DSL. I've been able to communicate
wireless among my 3 computers, but not consistently.
Never did get all computers set up correctly, I
guess. Looks like the new Apple airport extreme
would be a good long term solution with the latest
security, but kind of expensive. The 5 MHz option
would also avoid interference from my 3 portable
phones.
hanks again. Terry
Hey Terry, The Dl-524 is a great router and is what I use for connecting my arsenal of macs to the internet. Just connect the cable coming out of your DSL modem to the WAN port of the 524 and connect any other non wireless computers to the LAN ports. You may need to tell your isp the MAC address of your router so that they will authorize it to work on your account or you may not need to depending on your isp.
If you need to program and configure the 524 or find the MAC address you need connect an ethernet cable between the computer and one of the LAN ports and then type in 192.168.0.1 in Safari's address bar and hit return to access the 524's configure/setup pages. The user name is "admin" and the password is left blank.
As far as interference from you portable phones. I Just had to go in and selct another channel to have the 524 broadcast from. this is set from the Dlink's Home/Wireless (side menu option)
It should work great for you 'cause it does for me.

  • Best way to network 3 Macs with printer

I have three Macs (MacBook, MacBook Pro and iMac) and Airport Extreme. What is the best recommendation for sharing one printer amongst the three Macs? Thanks.

Depends on the type of printer you have. Generally speaking though you can either plug it into your iMac and turn on Printer Sharing (Print & Fax System Preference) else plug it into your AE base station and share it that way. The first option requires your iMac be running whereas the 2nd doesn't.

  • Best way to network mac mini + macbook

I currently have a macbook + pc laptop + airport express that I use for internet and airtunes with a stereo (only one audio-in).
I just bought a mac mini to hopefully plug directly into my stereo (and a tv).
any suggestions as to the best way to network everything so that I can:
    1) share all drives and files on any computer (prob not possible with the pc laptop)
    2) somehow still be able to play itunes off my laptop to my stereo (don't know if this is possible with one audio-in?)
    3) it would also be cool if I can plug my mac mini directly into the cable modem internet source (in my living room where I generally use my laptop) and instead plug the airport express in a far off bedroom to "extend" my wireless network to that area of my house for occasional use.
I feel like this is probably a common setup, just having problems figuring out the best way.
    Thanks

Hmm, think I have similar problem but the articles didn't quite do it for me.
We have Airport Extreme supporting a PowerBook and new MacMini. We only have one email account and shared folders.
We envisaged the MacMini acting as the main machine and being able to access the files and emails independently from each machine. However, we've realised that won't work as you have no control over which machine the emails go to for a start!
We thought of a couple of solutions but are there more obvious ones:
    1. turn off email on one machine
    2. take all the files off the PowerBook and just use it to access files on the MacMini

  • Best way to network Iphoto

W#hat is the best way to network iphoto so that multiple libaries stay uptodatde and runn off the one coppy of photos.
I have a macmini as a file server and need to keep multiple libaries working on diffrent 9mac.

There is no way you can "sync" multiple libraries with a backup/syncing program. IMO the optimal way would be to have all of your Macs run the same library located on an external HD connected to the Mac Mini. Or you could partition the Mini's HD and have one partition for the library with the ownership set to be ignorned on it. However as Terence pointed out iPhoto is not a multi user application so only one user could use the library at a time. However, that would not prevent the other users from perusing the photos with an application likeiMedia Browser.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • What's the best way to update my Mac with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player?

I've been getting prompts whenever I look at certain websites to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.  I'm skeptical as to responding to those prompts.  What is the best way to update my Mac Pro with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player?

You might also want to consider uninstalling Adobe Flash... I currently don't have it installed and haven't needed to install it.  Most websites are now coded in HTML 5 so that the iOS devices can actually visit them.  I can still watch YouTube videos et al.  About the only thing I can't do is play Flash games... but they're a resource hog anyways.
Try going without for a day or two and see just how many sites you visit no longer require it.  A lot of people keep it installed out of habit, not out of necessity.  If you have Flash installed, visit a site and it's out of date, it will tell you to update your Flash.  What it won't do is tell you is that had Flash not been installed, it would have used the HTML 5 code instead.  Think about it... if an iOS device can't run Flash at all... it can't visit this site if it were written only to use Flash.  What site would eliminate such a huge portion of their market base?  You'd be surprised at how many sites use HTML 5.  Uninstall Flash and see for yourself.

  • Best way to connect my Mac Air to my TV ?

What's the best way to connect my Mac Air to my TV ideally wirelesly so I can have meetings in the room displayed on the TV?
The TV has an HD port.

You're only option at this point in time for a wireless connection to your TV for mirroring your display is a product called McTivia, which runs around $180.
If wireless isn't absolutely necessary and you don't feel like shelling out that much cash, a simply HDMI cable and a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter would do the trick and save you over $100.

  • Best way to network an imac with an ibook

I was hoping someone could recommend the best way to network my G4 imac with my wife's ibook laptop. I want us to be able to share drives (internal and extrernal), internet, and a printer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!

I'm assuming you don't have the Airport Base Station yet? That's pretty much the most convenient way I know of, as mere file sharing makes it pretty tricky, if not impossible, to get access to external volumes mounted on, say, your G4. Caveat: only a USB-capable external HD can be hooked up to the base station.

  • Best way to access my mac G4 files when working on a windows pc laptop

Hi - I'm looking for ideas on the best way to access files stored on my G4 mac, when working on a pc laptop elsewhere in the house.
I'm not sure if this involves setting up a network, or whether I should be looking at ftp or even bluetooth.
Just to explain what I'm after: I'm writing a book, primarily on my g4 (running panther) in my study. But I spend a large proportion of my day running after my rampaging toddler. I'd like to make better use of my time by being able to grab my partner's laptop and write while my toddler is occupied for twenty minutes.
Messing around with a memory stick etc would just take too long as I'd have to remember to update the main file. It would get very messy!
    I hope someone can help!
    Thanks, Tina

Between the networking question(s) to connect the two different platform
computers, using Sharing and other settings in each, the next question is
about the software used in the documents you are to be creating in one
    and sending to the other.
    Do you have a similar word processing software for the PC as in the Mac;
or something compatible in creating and using .RTF documents, etc. Or,
if you have a Windows version of AppleWorks, that would work. And the
TextEdit in your OS X can handle rich text format word processing; and
probably open basic text from a PC fairly easy. (And Word, etc, can.)
Issues in sharing, are such that you have to be careful when changing the
settings in your computers, that you don't accidentally share your computer
contents with other persons and computers in the vicinity. By wire would be
the most secure, since Ethernet can be used locally to share.
Internet and wireless may be a possibility, too; or using a local shared external
drives, if visible to both computers, depending on the network setup.
Do you have a USB hard disk drive set up on your wireless network, and
formatted in Fat32 so the Mac and PC can both see and use it? If so, you
may be able to send documents to there from the PC and use them in the
Mac. This may work, and depending on how the files were organized, not
too hard to keep up with the draft copies generated from the PC for use in
the Mac at a later time, and so on. This way, both computers would not
need to be on, to send & receive a file...
    {For that matter, using a Google Account could be helpful;
    to just email the writing to yourself, at any computer.}
Anyway, there are several possibilities, including those in the link to another
discussion on that topic per the above post.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Best way to sync 2 macs

What is the best way to sync a MacBook Air with an iMac?

If you really want a no fuss solution I'll give you one that I've been using not for nearly a year.  There are additional benifit's at least check it out at Synology .com
    1.  Purachase a Synology Disk Station (DS) I recommend for home users the DS112 ($199 + $100 for 2TB HDD) or DS112J ($149 + $100 fo 2TB HDD).
The DS has a app called Cloud Station (CS) that works just like DropBox with one exception you have 1, 2 or 3TB's of storage (depending on the space you choose) and the SYNC is much more secure since it's on your own home network.  You can also set up CS to sync over the Internet which is more secure than DropBox IMO.  You don't have to be a network expert by any means to set the DS up.....very simple instructions (do some reading and reasearching while you wait on your order).  If you do need help Synology is very responsive to phone calls and emails.  And the best thing about Synology they are very MAC friendly.  And if you use Time Machine to do regular backup what's synced in CS will be backed up, because Cloud Station is just like another folder residing in your Home folder.
There are also YouTube videos on how to set up DS and CS.  If you do decide to get one I'd be glad to help you set it up!!!!!!!!!
    Cheers!
BTW, I used Chronosync but didn't really like it,  seemed like I was always having to perform a manual sync and there were issues with some of the files syncing properly, that was my experience.  Others may love it I didn't.

  • Best way to clean out Mac

I am getting a new MacBook Pro this week and I wanted to give my old one to my son. Once I transfer all of my data to the new computer, I would like to clean everything but the programs out of the old Mac before I give it to him. The old one has been a bit buggy of late. What is the best way to do this so that he can start over with a clean slate?

    Hi DKK,
John gives some great advice, however you'll lose the installed programs. There's a good chance, though that you'll resolve the sluggishness. You can always reinstall the programs afterwards.
If you do go the route of an Archive & Install (assuming you're reinstall Leopard and not Snow Leopard) while you won't lose the installed programs there's a good chance that they may not work properly and you'll need to reinstall them anyways.

  • Best way to sync two Macs?

I recently got a new iMac, which means I now run Mac OS X Lion on an iMac as well as on a MacBook Pro. This means I now need to keep the two machines in sync. I am finding that although iCloud takes care of my calendar, photos, and contacts, it is not useful when it comes to documents and other data. Could someone please suggest the best way of keeping the two Macs in sync?

    Sorry No.
I don't have a need for such syncing.
But the app is around for quite some time and they have a time-limited Trial version.

  • Best way to restore old mac backup to new machine?

Purchased a new MacBook Pro to replace old MacBook. In the mean time the drive in the old machine has failed, so can't migrate from machine to machine. I do have old machine drive backed up via Time Machine on a firewire external drive.
What's the best way to get my files and setting to the new machine?
    Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Your best bet is Migration Assistant, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Just attach your TM drive, start up MA, and it'll walk you through.
One suggestion: do not turn TM on yet. Be sure you've got everything you need off your TM drive, then erase it so TM can start over with the new Mac.

  • Best way to access a Mac remotely?

I have a G5 tower at work and a G5 iMac at home, both running Tiger. I would like to access my files at work from my home computer.
What is the best, most efficient, and most cost-effective way of doing that? I don't need to perform major computer maintenance remotely -- just access files and occasionally fonts.
Should I invest in the new Apple Remote Desktop 3 that I've read about, or is there a simpler option built in to Tiger? ARD3 seems a bit more robust than I think I need.
My work computer is on a network with mostly Windows PCs. Don't know if that presents any special challenges...
    Thanks!

In this forum area do a search on "remote access".

  • Best way to network

I'm about to get the New 2.4ghz imac, and I was wondering what the best method would be to data transfer (mp3's and pictures mainly) from my G4 800? Firewire (would need a cable) I have an ethernet cable that should work??

    From Mac Help in the Help menu of the Finder;
    Connecting two computers using Ethernet
You can use an Ethernet cable to connect two Macintosh computers and share files or play network games.
    1. Connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of one computer to the Ethernet port on the other.
    2. Open Sharing preferences on both computers and turn on Personal File Sharing. Note the Computer Name for the computers.
    3. On one of the computers, choose Go > Connect To Server and then click Browse.
    4. Double-click the other computer in the window and enter your password, if necessary.
If you manually configured the TCP/IP settings for the built-in Ethernet configuration on the computer you are connecting to, you may need to enter that computer's TCP/IP address in the Connect To Server dialog.
To see or set the TCP/IP address, open Network preferences and choose your Ethernet port configuration from the Show pop-up menu (named Built-in Ethernet unless you gave it another name).
