Best way to record / mix saxophone

I am about to record some tenor saxophone parts, for the first time! Anyone having some advice?
I will be using a MXL 2003 condensator mic and have a Tascam FW-1804 audiointerface. Maybe I can get my hands on a tube pre-amp (MindPrint Envoice MK II).
Any suggestions?

Saxes are generally pretty straight forward, but from my experiences...
Like the discussion going on about recording vocals, put a little space between the sax and the mic. It doesn't need to be much, but let the mic capture the whole instrument, not just what's coming out of the bell.
The mic you mentioned, although I'm not familiar with it, is a large diaphragm condenser, right? That should be fine. When it comes time to mix, put Logic's channel EQ on it, and activate the analyzer... make sure it's analyzing PRE-EQ. Chances are, there will be a bit of mid range "honk", that that mic will bring to the table. You can find that frequency range, and dial it back a couple of dB, just to smooth it out a bit.
Delay, and reverb, even a touch of chorus, can all work on a sax. Just be aware, that a little, and I mean a LITTLE, of each, can go a long way, otherwise, it'll get pretty cheezy pretty fast. Be tasteful, and respectful of the instrument.

Best Way to Record Mixer Audio?

Hello! Let me preface this by saying that I have VERY limited knowledge of audio hardware . I'm mainly a video/post-production guy, so thought this would be the best place to post my question.
I'm doing a shoot of a church play. I want to record audio straight from the sound board. I've been told that it has a stereo 1/4" output. I'm going to be borrowing an audio recording device from a friend (think it's called an H4?). He said it has an XLR input (going to have to buy an adapter), and it can record audio in a bunch of formats, all the way up to 96 KHZ / 24 bit.
In video land, most low-end camcorders record audio in 48 KHz/16 bit. I'm using FCP and it's able to handle 96 KHz/24 bit audio easily. So what audio mode should I record in: 48/16 or 96/24? Don't know what kind of mixer the church uses, I think it'd be something created mid/late 90's.
Also, can somebody fill me in on expected file sizes? Mono/stereo for both 48/16 and 96/24? Thanks!

line level is usually -10db (unbalanced) or +4db (balanced) while mic level is usually around -50db. As you can see, there's a huge difference of level betwen them. The output from a mixer is usually line level. What that means is if you connect a line level signal into a input dedicated to mic level, you'll be 40db too hot and you'll overdrive everything.
My thought on audio quality is that sample rate and bit rate are two important factors but there's many others factors. You should be fine at 48/16. Remember that a lot of people used and are still using 48/16 for their movies and that doesn't mean those don't sound right.
The combo jack has been developped by Neutrik and allows you to plug either a 1/4 cable or a XLR cable in the same jack. You can see them in a lot of audio interfaces like Presonus, Edirol, MOTU, etc.

Best way to record electric guitar

Hi all,
after months of playing with GarageBand, a fantastic tool, I decided to try to record something with my electric guitar, just to see if I could be able to compose a song
Well, I recently got a Dual G5 PowerMac, I saw it has a line in and a digital audio connector. I even got an iMic, a leftover from the "old" Dual G4 I had.
So far, which is the best way to record my electric guitar? I already have the 1/4" -> 1/8" adaptor, should I just plug it in the iMic or the line in port on the rear of the Mac?
Or , should I use a pre-processor before sending the signal to the Mac (I have an effect simulator from yamaha)?
And, in case neither of the 2 scenarios are really worth it, what do you suggest?
I already tried using the search feature, but I really couldn't find 1 clear topic that summed up my questions... sorry 'bout that.

You can certainly try the Line-In, you won't hurt anything. Most people find that it doesn't work very well because guitar is not "Line-Level".
Others question the quality of the A/D converts built in to the Mac. Personally, I doubt the iMic's are any better, but the level problem usually forces one away from the direct Line In without some form of pre-amp.
I've used the iMic (though with a mixing console) and found it acceptable. A higher quality interface (read much more money) yields much better results ... it's always a trade off.

you can use iMovie to record a video for free on a Mac with iSight.
1. Open iMovie HD
2. Choose “Create a new project”
3. Name the project for example “iSight Movie” (first field). In the second field, let the default location “Sequences”, in the third one, video format, choose “iSight”. Push “Create”
4. iMovie window opens, next to the scissors, choose the camera (Camera mode), then iSight. Now you appear on the screen, right?
5. Press “Record with iSight” in the main picture window.
6. Press the same button to stop. Your new clip appears now in the clip panel at the right.
7. You are done!

While theoretically possible, sometimes the camera people disable recording back to tape from the computer due to DRM (digital rights managment) issues. They will allow tape to tape transfers however.
Test your process first is all I can advise.

What's the best way to record different articulations in 1 phrase?

In my first violins I am using forte legato, pianissimo pizz, forte tremelo and forte marcato in 1 phrase within 4 bars. What now would be the best way to record this? I am using Peter Siedlaczek's Complete Classical Collection. Do I make a seperate track for every effect and record 1 bar on every track? Or do I use the Key Switch for every effect withing 1 track? What is the most easiet way of working and especiallyu, what used not all my processor power? I only have a PowerPc with w GB ram.

Seems like you've answered your own question as those are the two ways to do what you are trying to do. Using the key-switch will be less CPU intensive than using multiple instances of the plugin.

BEST WAY TO RECORD FROM TV

Whats the best way to record from TV and then be able to edit the footage, without losing quality?
Is it with a dvd recorder, how to you get the files off the recorder???

If you already have a digital video camera, you can probably do it without buying anything extra. I have done this by connecting the video output from my able box to an input on my video camera, then connected the camera to the computer using the FireWire cable. I opened iMovie and imported the video from there. Of course, it's a bit of a pain, so I haven't done it often, and the quality is only as good as your camera is capable of. You may need to buy the cable to connect the cable box to the camera, though mine came with such a cable.

If I were trying to record something very important, likely "get one chance only" type of thing, I would not use GB to do the recording. I would use a tape recorder and then later transfer the recording to GB.

Thanks for the response. My HTC can record my video, but it is my old phone so is no longer connected to network or even works as a phone. This is why I need to either beam/bluetooth the file, or use a cable if that's the way to do it.
Unless I'm missing some other obvious way. I suppose if I have to, I can record video, either on my HTC or digicam then convert and drop into itunes, synch and then its on my iphone to upload to YouTube (if this format works for YouTube)
Long story short - I'm looking for a quck way to record video and upload using the iphone, on the go (ie. not needing my home PC)

Best way to record high SPL audio?

I need a simple way to record higher SPL band rehearsals. I don't need studio quality or multi tracking. Just an audio recording that clear and as un distorted as possible. I know the built in mics on Idevises are not really made for higher volume stuff. My band has changed some of the structures of cover songs we are doing so practicing to the original artists studio recording does more harm then good. I just want to be able to record us rehearsing so I can practice to it at home. And get the changes and structure down before we play out live later this month.
I have quite a few idevices but the more modern choices at my disposal are: iPhone 5, iPhone 4, iPad (3rd gen) ipod (4th gen)
What device, app and hardware will healed best results. I've been told the mic on the earbuds have a better frequency response then the built in mic. So is it better to use that? And what app is good simple and effective at auto controlling the mic's sensitivity to reduce distortion.
Also I am the drummer and acoustically seated, in About the worst position for quality. So rather then have the idevice behind my kit where I can control it. I would need something I could place across the room and just record an hour or two.

I have a Shure PG58 with a XLR to 1/4" connection, to which I added a 3.5mm adaptor. The mic was about $60, the adapter was $4.
(Edit: I've just noticed that Griffin makes an XLR to 3.5mm cable, which would eliminate the adaptor.)
You can't connect a mic directly to the line input of your PowerMac, because the level will be too low, but you can either use a mic pre-amp or mixer (if you already have these), otherwise, you can use a Griffin iMic (which is what I use) to convert the audio to USB, which gives you a decent level.

Best way to record band practice audio

I have an old G4 Power Mac that I'm giving to a friend to record band practice.
We are using Audacity as the music program.
The G4 does not have an internal mic.
Do we need a sound card installed with a microphone jack in order to record to Audacity. (Yes, we will be using GarageBand soon).
We're also looking into something called a Firebox (?).
Basically, we're looking for the best way to set up this old computer to record and edit band practice. Nothing professional, but something that doesn't sound distorted!

Best way to record 50 kS/s data to file

I am trying to read data from a DAQ at a sampling rate of 50 kS/s and record it to a file. My application needs to run for at least a few hours. Initially, I tried a producer-consumer loop pattern with a Write to Measurement File Express VI, but it wrote the data too slowly, and my queue filled up. Now I am trying to use the Write to Spreadsheet File VI with or without a producer-consumer loop pattern (see attached VIs). Both seem to write data to file, but neither writes the number of datapoints I would expect (both have far fewer datapoints).
What is the best way to write this data to file? This seems like a basic question, so if it has already been discussed at length in another forum, or if there are examples of it which someone could direct me to, that would also be appreciated.

I agree that TDMS is probably the best way to go for fast data streaming.
I also want to point out that you can read TDMS files with some spreadsheet software. This makes it easier to manage and provides a method for human readability.
