Best way to record narration for 200+ slideshow?

Hi All,
I've got a long narrative to record to a complex slideshow of over 200 slides with transitions.
What are your suggestions?
If it's done in Screenflow- is there a loss of resolution/ quality? Another alternative I thought of was recording the narrative for each slide in Audacity and then attaching it to each slide.
I want to export the whole to Quicktime/ Flash when done.
System: Macbook 2.16GHz running 10.5.3 and iWork08.
Cheers

<<I guess I could time the narration for each bullet point (build) on the slide, and then manually set the build time accordingly.>>
That's about it. Setting an appropriate Delay for automatic Builds is what I had in mind. However, it is important to remember that this often will "slip" slightly during playback - especially if the presentation is designed on one computer and played on another because the playback speed (duration) of all Builds and Transitions is dependent on the processor speed of the playback computer.
It is not a perfect solution, but until Apple fixes all of the various audio deficiencies in Keynote, we will have to live with the various work-arounds that are proposed in this forum.
Good luck.

  • Best Way to Record Narration for Slides

    I'm new to Keynote.
    1. I have created a 20 slide presentation.
    2. I have recorded a 5-minute narration for the presentation in Garage Band.
What is my best option to put the two elements (slide show and audio) together so they sync perfectly? I'd like the end result to be a flash file that I can upload to YouTube and embed on my website.
Here are a couple possible work flows I thought may work. Am I on the right path? What would you suggest?
    A. Cut my audio into 20 files and add those files to the individual Keynote pages. Then somehow turn the Keynote with the 20 audio files into a flash file.
    B. Wait until Camtasia for Mac comes out next week. Then, add my audio track, import the Keynote slides (if possible), and tweak the timing in Camtasia so that the slide show and narration match up.
What do you think? Would either of these work? Am I forgetting some other obvious solution that would be easier? Thanks.

I have no experience with Flash or Camtasia, but I have used iMovie to create QuickTime slideshows that are suitable for most websites. This may be another option for you.
It's easy in iMovie to match up narration or music, or both, with individual slides, apply various effects and transitions, and export the results in formats for DVDs or websites. I have not tried importing an entire Keynote presentation into iMovie and do not know if that's possible. Keynote offers title and transition features that iMovie lacks; so the choices you make really depend on your end goals, which will determine which tools are best to get there.

  • Best Way to Add Narration for PPro Project on MacBook?

    Hi Everyone,
I am a newbie here with a question about the best strategy for recording narration in an Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 project.  I will be using a microphone to record an elderly relative who will be narrating silent family films which I had converted to DV format.
My constraint is that I will be using a MacBook (not a Pro) and so it is rather underpowered for running Adobe Premiere Pro.  But, such is life.  Anyway, I see two possible ways to do it:
    1. Render the entire 2 hour sequence so as to allow for the smoothest playback.  Then, with an enlarged preview window, watch the footage through Premiere Pro while using it to record the audio.  The problem I foresee is that my lowly 2gb RAM may not be able to handle it.
    OR,
    2. Export the entire 2 hour sequence as an mpeg file.  Use quicktime or some other reliable player to display the video while using Audition or Soundbooth to record the narration.  This route would be less processor intensive but I worry about syncing the audio up later, especially if we take in breaks in recording the narration.  Some of the old footage is fast moving so timing is semi-important.
What do the more experienced on here think?

Burn a DVD for the relative to watch.  Record with an audio recorder.  Sync later.

  • What is the best way to record a video(not big) for free on a mac w/isight?

What is the best way to record a video(not big) for free on a mac w/isight? I need to just make a short (less than 5 minute, no special effects) video, but I can't figure out any programs that will make this possible for me.
    Thanks.

    Hi Carolyn,
you can use iMovie to record a video for free on a Mac with iSight.
    1. Open iMovie HD
    2. Choose “Create a new project”
    3. Name the project for example “iSight Movie” (first field). In the second field, let the default location “Sequences”, in the third one, video format, choose “iSight”. Push “Create”
    4. iMovie window opens, next to the scissors, choose the camera (Camera mode), then iSight. Now you appear on the screen, right?
    5. Press “Record with iSight” in the main picture window.
    6. Press the same button to stop. Your new clip appears now in the clip panel at the right.
    7. You are done!

  • Recording Narration for Keynote?

According to the KN User Manual, each KN slide can be narrated with an audio file so that the audio plays for that one slide only and stops when that slide leaves the screen. But the user manual does not say how to record this narration. Is there a way to record narration, one slide at a time, using a UBS mic, directly into Keynote as I'm building the presentation?
Right now.... my procedure is to export the KN, no audio, presentation as a QT movie: DV NTSC Low Quality compression, at 8fps. (Any other frame rate and the QT movie is not the same length as the Keynote Presentation. I made a one minute test of this and only changed the frame rate settings. 8fps gave me a 1:00 QT movie, but 29.97fps gave me :58. Over time, this two second loss can really add up!)
I then imported that low video quality QT into Final Cut and used the voice over tool and a USB mic to record narration as each slide rolled by. I then exported just the audio track, since the video was just there as a low quality guide, and I then put that audio track in iTunes.
I then went back to the original high quality Keynote presentation and dropped the narration track into the first slide with the media option. For at least the one minute test, everything was in sync through ten different slides.
Is there an easier way for me to get narration into a Keynote presentation?
    Thanks, Steve

    Thanks Richard,
I did what you suggested, but instead of using QT pro, I used SoundStudio, which will also allow me to record through a USB mic. I then added an audio file to each individual slide. I did this for a ten slide test, but for my wife's 100 slide presentation I can see how that would take up a lot of time!
Still, your system of audio files (builds) added to each slide worked fine although I'm still testing out the refinements. It seems that once the audio is on the slide, the preference is towards the audio. By that I mean if you have a 12 second slide and you add 14 seconds of audio then the slide will stay on for at least 14 seconds before it makes a transition. Even though you may have set the slide to transition after 12 seconds. The audio won't get cut off. The other thing I see is that after the audio stops playing, there's too much of a delay before the transition kicks in.
I'll have to look into that.
The other route I took was making a Keynote presentation, exporting it as a low quality QT self playing movie, importing that movie into Final Cut Express, adding voiceover to the total running time of the presentation, and then exporting just the audio track as an aiff auido file. I then took that aiff audio file, went back to the high quality Keynote and dropped that track into the audio well to sync up with the first slide. All worked well with everything in sync, in Keynote. I then exported both audio and video as a QT movie and the audio fell out of sync. After 60 seconds the audio ended up 2 seconds longer than the video. Over time this could kill the project.
So..... if I have to do a lot of narration on slides I might buy QT Pro and drop the audio in as build objects for each slide. Hopefully I can work the other timing bugs out.
Any idea what went wrong with the sync when I exported a QT movie out of Keynote?

  • Can Keynote 3 record narration for slides (like PowerPoint)?

Does anyone know if it's possible to record narration for selected slides in Keynote 3? Unfortunately, this much-desired feature was lacking in Keynote 2 (it could only play one audio file through the entire presentation). FYI, PowerPoint has this feature already, but it is then limited by an inability to export to Flash or QuickTime... Thanks!

Thanks, nanotechmama! On your lead, I looked up the User's Guide and found this additional clarification:
    "Adding Narration and Other Audio
You can add music—a file or playlist from your iTunes music library, or any other sound file—to a Keynote document. You can add sound as a soundtrack for the entire slideshow, or you can add sound to a single slide.
If you add a soundtrack, the music starts playing when the slideshow starts. You can specify whether to play the audio once or repeatedly (or you can turn it off ).
If you add a sound file to an individual slide, the sound plays when the slide appears and stops when you move to the next slide. You could, for example, record narration for each slide as an MP3 file; this technique is especially useful if you plan to export the slideshow as a self-playing QuickTime movie. (For more information, see “PowerPoint” on page 167.)
Note: To make sure that the audio plays on other computers, “Copy audio and movies into document” must be selected in the expanded Save dialog. This option is on by default."
So it looks like it might be possible to add a different narration file to each slide. I've therefore ordered a copy of Keynote 3, and I'll confirm in a week or so (once I receive it) whether this is indeed so.

  • What's the best way to record different articulations in 1 phrase?

In my first violins I am using forte legato, pianissimo pizz, forte tremelo and forte marcato in 1 phrase within 4 bars. What now would be the best way to record this? I am using Peter Siedlaczek's Complete Classical Collection. Do I make a seperate track for every effect and record 1 bar on every track? Or do I use the Key Switch for every effect withing 1 track? What is the most easiet way of working and especiallyu, what used not all my processor power? I only have a PowerPc with w GB ram.

Seems like you've answered your own question as those are the two ways to do what you are trying to do. Using the key-switch will be less CPU intensive than using multiple instances of the plugin.

  • What's the best way to record a phone conversation to GB?

i am doing a small podcast with my best friend "the joseph podcast" and we have a few celebrities calling in to our show, we can't believe it either, Angela Kinsey from "the office" and Charlie Day from "it's always sunny in philadelphia" and we were wondering what the best way to record a phone conversation would be. we need help and we are pretty much poor so keep it cheap. thanks so much!

If I were trying to record something very important, likely "get one chance only" type of thing, I would not use GB to do the recording. I would use a tape recorder and then later transfer the recording to GB.
    I'd use something like this BELL-SONECOR TR-70 Tele-Recorder Adapter for $13.

I am looking for the best way to record pre-recorded music, (CDs, vinyl) to my iPad. I have an M-audio interface I used with my MacBook.  I am looking for the best app to use, hopefully with an analog style VU meter with a needle. thank you.

    Hi Paul
Thanks for the response. My HTC can record my video, but it is my old phone so is no longer connected to network or even works as a phone. This is why I need to either beam/bluetooth the file, or use a cable if that's the way to do it.
Unless I'm missing some other obvious way. I suppose if I have to, I can record video, either on my HTC or digicam then convert and drop into itunes, synch and then its on my iphone to upload to YouTube (if this format works for YouTube)
Long story short - I'm looking for a quck way to record video and upload using the iphone, on the go (ie. not needing my home PC)
    Thanks again!

  • What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch?

What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch? Used Quicktime Pro/ Export (iPhone setting). Videos aren't as crisp as downloaded Videos. Compressors /ipod video Setting also looks crapy (with bitrate med & High). What should I use?

Visualhub is a transcoder with multiple input and output formats with specific setting for iPod,iPod touch. Costs around $19-used to work great but recently everything I convert suffers audio crash than closes out the player. Hopefully they will fix it.
Elgato H.264 hardware transcoder is $99 dollars(USB stick that plugs in to Mac)-speeds up encoding of any file quicktime can handle, settings for apple tv, iphone/touch, ipod,Sony PSP. Worth the cost if you transcode a lot of video for the Touch or own an elgato HD tuner. Files work flawlessly and look great.
Mpeg streamclip-free. Works great, has presets or can customize the output.

What is the best way to record a project from the timeline to an external recorder via firewire? Also, who makes a recorder that works with a mac and recordes in realtime? This is possible right?

While theoretically possible, sometimes the camera people disable recording back to tape from the computer due to DRM (digital rights managment) issues. They will allow tape to tape transfers however.
Test your process first is all I can advise.

  • What is the best way to create space for a Yosemite download?

What are the best ways to create space for the download of Yosemite.  I can't install it as I don't have enough space.

Did you empty Trash?  Very important!
How much space do you have available?  Click in the HDD icon on the desktop, COMMAND+I.
    Also try a Safe Boot:

  • Best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book

    Hello,
I was wondering what would be the best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book on a Macbook Pro so to achieve the most realistic results to what's on the screen
ie. which software should I use to change photos from RGB to CMYK, photoshop or iPhoto itself. I'm guessing maybe the autofix feature in iPhoto? (I don't have Aperture)
Secondly, which monitor color setting should I set the screen at? I'm guessing it's either Apple RGB or Colour LCD, maybe even ColorMatch RGB?
Any any other tips that people can give in achieving the most realistic results to what you have on the screen when your printed iPhoto book gets sent back. I don't want the mid tones to disappear or become too bright because the gamma and color settings were different to what they use at the other end.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?
    Many thanks
