Best way to redirct library

I have my photos on an external HDD that seems to be failing.  My Lighroom library is found on this failing HDD.  I want to move the photos to a new external HDD.  What's the best way to transfer the photos to the new HDD and have Photoshop use that as the new library?
I image this has been asked before and I apologize for asking again, but I can't seem to find best answer.
Thanks fo the patience.

I believe you that it works, I just couldn't figure it out.  When I went to Step 1: File->New Catalog like you suggested, a window opened that asked to put in a file name, not simply point to a different drive.  Ultimatley, I got it to work by just deleting the old catalog and adding a new catalog.  Now LR does open the photos on the new hard disc.  What I wanted to do, hoever, was to put the photos on the new HDD and then re-import them back into LR as if it was a fresh install so that I could add attributes to each photo like copywrite etc.  Not a big deal really, I'll do without that and just keep things as they are.
thanks for the help!!

The External Hard drive where I stored all my iTunes files has died and I am unable to retrieve any files. Every thing is on my iPod whats the best way of geting the library & playlists back into iTunes?

Install software such as Paragon NTFS. Regardless of the method you use, back the data up; that drive may fail at any time.

  • Best way to use library movieclips with classes?

    Hi,
I've created a carousel class which takes one parameter, an array of menu item names, these will then be displayed on the carousel. I've then created  two movieclips for the left and right controls, added them to the library and given them classes of their own.
Within the carousel class I instantiate instances of the two control classes which then enables me to add event listeners for rollover and rollout.
What I'd like to know is, is this the best way to do this short of creating the controls using pure actionscript?
I'd like to not have to add the class properties for the left and right controls and have a situation where I could just give them the right name and they would work or maybe pass them in as parameters and use them that way.
Any tips for how you would go about doing this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    eb_dev

Have you tried something that isn't working?  If I understand what your intentions are, I would think that the approach would be to create Class ID's for the clips and import the classes into the carousel class.

  • Best way to move Library?

Hi can someone tell me the best way to move my entire Library to a new external drive so that I can get it off my mac's HD and free up the 160GB its using?
It contains all of out business images so its extremely important that I loose nothing, keep all the project structures and make the transition as smooth as possible.
I will be able to use the external HD in the same every day way with Aperture as I did the internal one wont I? and is firewire 800 or SATA best connection?

Move all your masters to the new location. You will then, in Aperture, see the little yellow triangle telling you that the referenced image’s master has not been found.
Select all images, go to: 'File' > 'Manage Referenced Files...' and you will see that all images are listed in red. In the lower part of the dialog, navigate to the new location of the masters and select one of them. Then select the corresponding one in the top part of the dialog.
Click the "Reconnect All" button and Aperture will reconnect each master.
Also, take a look at the answers in this thread:

  • What's the best way to move library in Windows to a new computer?

I have iTunes running fine on my Vista machine at home. I've gotten Win7 in, and I'm going to be moving to a new computer I have which I'm upgrading from XP to 7 with (it's got more horsepower than my Vista machine).
Anyway, to that, I want to move all my stuff from my current Vista machine to the 7 machine, ioncluding iTunes. What's the easiest way to do this - and maintain all my stuff, like ratings, number of times played, playlists, etc...
I've read some helps, and none of them seem concerned about keeping number of times played, and all that. You can't just up and move the files, as the directory path will be different, so the itunes data file won't see them if you copy that, too.
    Suggestions?

The first thing to do is to ensure that your music is all together in the iTunes music folder. If you have tracks else where you need to consolidate your library.
Then install iTunes on the new PC but don't add any music.
With iTunes closed, drag the iTunes folder out of Music on the new PC to the desktop.
Then with iTunes closed on both PCs you need to copy The iTunes folder from the old PC to the Music fodler on the new PC so that it replaces the one you dragged out.
It doesn't really matter how you achieve the copying - network or via an external drive.
The last thing you need to do is to check the permissions on the iTunes folder you copied to the new PC, your account needs full control.

  • Best way to share library?

    Hey folks,
I have my library (60+ gb) on a windows 2003 file share. I have my library set in the advanced settings on each client. I can access it fine from windows and mac clients but I have some complications.
For instance, if I buy songs or rip CDs on any one computer, I have to add them to every other computer.
Other "metadata" doesnt seem to convey (play count, song rating, etc).
Is there a way to truly consolidate a library? IE is there a file that keeps all of this information about metadata and play lists and songs, etc? If so does it use some kind of relitive path based on the library setting in iTunes or does it use an absloute path? For example on the macs the library is (usually) \Volumes\Music and on PC I typically map M:\ to the music share.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello again,
Have the iTunes Library located in the Shared Folder for instance and then launch iTunes in both users while holding option (or alt) on your keyboard. Choose the iTunes library file wherever it may be located. You can keep it in the same spot if you want (i.e. your Music folder). Many people have their's on a local network hard drive and do this.
The benefit is that when one user updates the iTunes library file, the next user will open an updated version that has all songs that the other user added.
Since you have one computer shared, this should be fine. I am unsure what happens when multiple computers/users access the library file at the same time.

  • What is the best way to set up iTunes on our home network so all family members have access to all of our itunes library, even music we don't have on the cloud?

I have five different people using 10 different apple devices on one itunes account in our family.  We have had trouble sharing.  What is the best way to set up itunes on our home network?  We have purchased music that sits on icloud, but we also have music we have imported from our previous cd library.  Our itunes program keeps crashing and dumping everyone's playlists.  So far we have all been using just the one desktop computer to sync to because we can't figure out how to share the same librarly and playlists on multiple computers in our home so devices can be synced at any location as well as playlists and purchases be made.

What is the best way to set up itunes on our home network?
One iTunes library per person.  One iTunes account per person.
If people wish to share songs, they can make copies.
When the inevitable day comes when the kids get older, you will not have to come back here and post asking how all that stuff can get separated!

  • I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?

I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?
    Facts:
In moving to a new iMac, I copied the iPhoto library to an external HDD assuming that I would point the new iMac to the backed up iPhoto Library
All worked fine when I pointed the new library but noticed that some folders contained aliases and not the original file. So when I attempt to open that photo it can't find it because the alias is pointing to another drive.
I do have all original photos from a couple of external HDDs. In the folders titled, "Originals" (from older versions of iPhoto) and "Masters" (from current iPhoto)
I'm thinking I can create a new folder and drop the original files and make that my new iPhoto library. Is there a better way to rebuild my library? I do not want to create any future aliases.
Thanks in advance for any help!

do you have a strongly recommended default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library - you have unchecked that option?
It sounds like you have a referenced library and are now experiancing one of the very siginificant drawbacks of a referenced library and one of the many reasons they are strongly not recommended
Also note that iPhoto '11 may use alises in the originals folder as part of the upgrade
It is important that we understand exactly what you have and what is not sorking - what error messages you are getting
You must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure of content of the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it  --  and you can not rebuild yoru librtary - only iPhoto ir iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can rebuild a library unless you are a SQL programmer and understand the structure that iPhoto uses

They all say that the best way to accomplish the task is to follow the sap on-line help.
because i don`t know the struts of the library , so to find what i need in the library becomes impossible for me as the library includes a lot of files .
so please some one help me to direct the struts of the library and teach me the way how to find what i want ?

or http://help.sap.com/ -> SAP ERP -> Choose Release (for example SAP enhancement package 2 for SAP ERP 6.0) -> SAP ERP Central Compoennt (MM and SD under Logistics)
From Materials Management Link you can navigate further to Purchasing, Inventory Management etc. From Sales and Distribution you can naviate further: Sales, Billing etc.
For example to see help regarding Purchase Orders:
You would first expand Logistics and choose Materials Management in Help Link for ERP Central Component. Here, choose Purchasing Node which will take you Purchasing Help screen -> Click and Purchase Orders Node and Expand the same for more information regarding Purchase Orders.

  • What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?

What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?
Currently I have a common itunes library in a shared folder that each user is linked to.  The problem is that when one user adds music to the shared file, it does not automaticaly appear to other users when they open their iTunes.  They have to go to the shared library and select the new music in order to make it visable in their iTunes.
Would iTunes file shareing fix this problem?
    Thanks

Rick, are you saying that if you try to share a folder outside of home and use sharepoints, then the other mac wont prompt you to log in? Have you tried that? It is hard to believe that is the case
I am sort of saying that. Have you tried it? I know it's hard to believe, but you really need to help us out by trying some steps that you don't believe.
We can't see what your exact situation is. We sort of know what's worked for us out here. Just trying to help you get this going in less than 24 hours!
Sharepoints manages the samba configuration file. It's free software that puts a pretty face on an otherwise cumbersome config file.
    Give it a shot.
windows will not prompt for passwords, I have tried this with multiple computer at home for both vista and xp
As I stated. You will not get prompted on windows, if you have set up sharing in an insecure fashion. You are not using a secured sharing situation.
    No argument with your statement.

  • What is the best way to move an iPhoto library from one internal drive to another internal drive?

the drive where my iPhoto library is store is just about full.  I have a second internal SSD that I'd like to move (not copy) the library to.  What is the best way to do that and still ensure that iPhoto will access the library in its new location?

Just drag the iPhoto Library package from the one drive to the second disk.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the library in it's new location on the second disk.  Once you're satisfied that it is working satisfactorliy you can delete the copy on the first disk.

  • HT1751 What is the best way to move my iTunes library from an external PC drive to a Mac external drive?

I just make the move to Mac computers.  My iTunes library is currently on a PC formatted external drive.  I would like to move it to an external drive that i have formatted for Mac.  What is the best way to do this?

Is the entire library on the external drive or just the media folder? If it is the latter, and you still have access to the PC then see make a split library portable.
If the drive is in FAT32 format you can connect a portable library directly to the Mac, holding down Option as you start iTunes. Otherwise you either need to copy it to a local drive (Mac should be able to read NTFS) or install a full service NTFS driver so that the library can be read and updated.

  • Best way to move iTunes library & media from MacBook to mini server?

First, I searched the forums (parameter: "itunes") and didn't see this addressed.
Second, I searched the web (using multiple parameters), and didn't find an answer on point. I saw discussions about moving the iTunes library (well, media files) to another location (but same computer) and discussion about manually copying everything (with warnings about ensuring that the volume name and path are exactly the same, or else it's totally messed up).
That said, I currently use SL on a MacBook and I'm getting a mini with SLS. Among other things, I'd like the core of my iTunes media to be on the mini (for direct playback to my TV and for serving/sharing to my Apple TV). I'll still use iTunes on the MacBook for selected media (like books).
My media includes both iTunes purchases and non-DRM'd media.
Question: does SLS come with Migration Assistant and will this move my iTunes library from my MacBook (with SL) to the mini (with SLS)? I'm not interested in a migration assistant to move servers (web, email servers) or apps, or documents for that matter, as this is not a server move (some discussions online focused on this).
If it doesn't, what's the best way to move my iTunes library and media from my "clien" machine to the server so that playlists, ratings, purchases, etc. are all intact?

    MrHoffman wrote:
iTunes has its own private little world, and this question isn't really specific to Mac OS X Server, and the generic media-transfer discussion will likely receive better coverage over in the [iTunes forum|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=149].
Mac OS X Server doesn't do anything special with iTunes, and likely doesn't do anything specific with it at all; you're going to a "different" Mac, and server makes this more akin to a transfer to a new Mac, rather than the "replacement Mac" sequence seen with Mac OS X client.
I'd be surprised if this music transfer wasn't something that could be sorted out (within the limits of the copyrights) from some FAQ over in the iTunes forum, or from some of the following support articles:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1329
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38534
See if the folks over in the iTunes forum have something for this. (And again, server likely isn't relevant here; you're "just" going to transfer your music to a different Mac box here, and one that happens to run Mac OS X Server.
Thanks for the links - unfortunately, none of those are on point. The reason this is unique to server, I think, is that in the case of a regular mac to mac transfer, you would use Migration Assistant, and the move is easily done. But in seems like server doesn't come with Migration Assistant.
I suppose when I get it, I'll first try copying Migration Assistant to it, and try to run it. That will probably fail (but you never know), so my next attempt will be to have my MacBook move the media to the server (as if the server is simply network storage), and then copy over the library files. (I'm hoping that will enable the file paths to remain intact.)
The mini server is special in that it is the most appropriate home server, and home servers should be expected to do double duty - and outright server, and desktop. So, it would be handy for Apple to include Migration Assistant with the mini server.

  • Best way to share iTunes library with two user accounts?

I have a single iTunes library on my Macbook Pro.  I would like to share between to user accounts, each with Apple ID's.  What's the best way to do so?  Right now, I've given the second user rights to read/write to the first users "Music" folder.  But when one user adds song files, the other must "Add Folder" in order to see the new purchases.  It's kind of putsy.  Is there a better way?  Thanks!
