Best way to reinstall OS X and user acts??

https://discussions.apple.com/message/21962798#21962798
Just in case the discussion forum blocks the above link (its happened before), that discussion is about the problem I've had with my new iMac. I can browse the web for minutes, hours, or days, and without warning the internet performance will lag to a crawl and finally halt. It doesn't matter what browser I use, or whether its a wired or WiFi connection. Download clients freeze just like browsers. My 7 year old MBP runs just fine next to it on the same connection.
The problems I've had with the new iMac have gotten beyond irritating and reached "return it for service". Before I send it in, I need to try one last thing - erasing the OS and reinstalling it. Reading the help files and KB articles I see two options: Internet Restore, and restore from Time Machine. I really don't know what to try. If the Time Machine backup contains the system flaw (if any), then the machine will still have problems and I will have wasted time. On the other hand, if I try Internet Restore and my Time Machine data contains the flaw, it'll return to the machine when I move my data back anyway.
So how do I install a fresh copy of the OS, restore my data, and move forward without bringing along whatever it is that might be causing this machine to creep to a halt during browsing? I need to figure out if this is a system flaw before I bring it to the Apple Store.

Uggh! What a PITA you're facing.
If you know what you are doing, before you go too far down this path, you could try further debugging on your own with the Console log and/or something from one of the host of third-party, software/hardware integrity checking apps. However, it seems you've already gone that far or more with Apple Support.
I must say, my own experience going from 10.6 -> 10.8 with a direct install was also painful. I had left over components that ran mysteriously in the background causing all sorts of issues. I never did a fresh install, rather I spent lots of time tracking down odd things (and nearly crashed my whole system entirely). Then, I did a re-install.
In any case, I suggest, absolutely and positively before you wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install, do a full RAM test and a test of the HD for bad blocks. You can find third party utilities for these tests ... TechTool or the like. Alternatively, have the Apple folks do the full set of hardware tests for you. You don't want to install good software on flakey hardware.
In addition, you might be best to avoid the Apple Migration tool. This later means you have to do app-by-app resets of registration and preferences, hopefully while looking at the equivalent on your MBP.
Perhaps since bad luck comes in three's, this will be the end of it for you.
Good luck ... let us know what happens.

  • What is the best way to configure my iPods and user accounts?

    I'm looking for a little guidance. Here is my situation:
    I am running the latest version of Tiger. It is currently configured with three accounts; mine is the admin. account and each of my two children have their own accounts.
    My account is the one that is used most of the time. All of our calendars in iCal are maintained here including one for each of the kids. Each of the kids has their own Contacts list in the Address Book as well. I currently have a 5G 30GB iPod Video that I sync with iTunes through this account. Shortly, I will be buying an iPod Touch. I want my 30 GB iPod to be the one that has everything on it; it will be the one we take in the car on trips for music. I want the Touch to have some, but not necessarily all, of my music and all of our calendars and contact information. I am looking to use it to replace my Palm as my PDA.
    My son has a 2G Nano which currently syncs through his account.
    My daughter will be getting a 3G Nano soon.
    I will also be upgrading to Leopard very soon.
    Ultimately, I would like each of the kids to have their own iTunes libraries for music and podcasts and to sync their iCal calendars. As I understand it, however, they cannot access their calendars from their own accounts under my current arrangement. I also understand that there are several ways to configure my Mac to work with multiple iPods.
    Given all of this, what is the best thing for me to do? Should I set up all of the kids' iPods to sync through the admin. account so they can get their calendars at the same time? Or is their some way for them to have access to their calendar information from their own accounts under Tiger (or Leopard)? And as far as my two iPods (the Video and the Touch), should they sync through separate libraries, or through one using playlists. I also want to minimize duplicate data wherever possible, be it music or records in iCal and the Address Book.
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice!

  • I've had it with Motion 5.  What's the best way to reinstall Motion 4?

    Not exactly sure why I paid £30 for Motion 5 when it's basically a downgrade from 4.  It crashes all the time especially when I open the font list and also when I go to export a movie.  Doesn't remember the right fonts for saved projects!  Won't let you create your own custom layout.  Vector images keep being cropped in a project I'm doing at the moment even though I've unchecked the fixed resolution box and they are all in 3D layers?
    So, what is the best way of reinstalling Motion 4?
    Thanks

    You should never have uninstalled Motion 4.  They'll both live on the same system.  In fact, Motion 5's install puts all of your Final Cut Studio apps into a folder called "Final Cut Studio", it doesn't delete or overwrite it.
    If you're having those problems, there's issues with your system, not Motion.  Run Disk Utility and Repair all disks.  May need to run Disk Warrior and rebuild the directories of all of your disks.
    Verify your graphics card supports Motion 5, you have plenty of RAM, and your drives are fast enough.

  • Best way to reinstall iTunes 10?

    Recent problems lead me to conclude that I need to reinstall iTunes on my iMac.
    I have looked at my Snow Leopard installer disk and I can't find a specific de-installer option; neither can I find an option to specifically instal iTunes on its own. It seems to be an all or nothing affair.
    I suppose I could use software like CleanApp to remove iTunes then download it from Apple. If so, I would have to purchase it. But is deinstallation really necessary?  What if I just download iTunes from Apple Store?
    I have three iPods now.  An iPod Color, an iPod Nano (2nd gen) and an iPod Touch (3rd gen - I think).
    iTunes and the iPods work okay except for the Nano which crashes iTunes every time in connect it to my iMac.  However the Nano works fine with iTunes on my daughter's MacBook Pro.  So my conclusion is that I need to reinstall iTunes on my iMac.  Both my iMac and the MBP are running Mac OS 10.6.8.
    Another thing.  When I run iTunes on my iMac the 'Graphic Equaliser' pane opens too and hides itself out of sight behind the iTunes main window.  So I have to minimise iTunes, close the graphic equaliser pane myself, then carry on.  It does this every time I open iTunes irrespective of whether or not I have any hardware connected.
    So what is the best way to reinstall iTunes?  Remove it first then reinstall; or just download and reinstall over the top?

    See http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp for tips on your split albums.
    Look at some of your missing files and get info, cancelling any request to locate the file. It should show where iTunes thinks the file ought to be. Compare this to where the file actually is. You might find there is something consistent in the difference in which case it may be possible to move files back to where iTunes would like them to be.

    Not going to happen the way you want it to.
    When you add a gift card balance to the Apple ID, it's available for the Apple ID.
    Probably best to create unique Apple ID's for each... this will also make things easier in the future as purchases are eternally tied to the Apple ID they were purchased with.

  • What is the best way to safeguard my files and pictures before I send off my MacBook Pro to get fixed?

    What is the best way to safeguard my files and pictures before I send off my MacBook Pro to get fixed? I am running Mavericks and use an AirPort Time Machine to back-up all my files.

    Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. You need at least two independent backups to be completely safe. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
    If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore to an empty drive.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
    Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
    Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
    *An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

    In the page I simply referenced the facescontext directly... no need for a custom servlet.
    public void createcookie() {
    FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    HttpServletResponse resp = (HttpServletResponse)fc.getExternalContext().getResponse();
    Cookie userCookie = new Cookie("cookiename", "cookievalue");
    userCookie.setMaxAge(-1);
    userCookie.setMaxAge(3600);
    resp.addCookie(userCookie);
    return null;
    public String readcookie() {
    FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    ExternalContext ec = fc.getExternalContext();
    Map cookiemap = ec.getRequestCookieMap();
    if (cookiemap != null) {
    Cookie cookie = (Cookie) cookiemap.get("cookievalue");
    return cookievalue;
    For reference I could not get getCookies() method of HttpServletRequest to work.. it would only return JSESSIONID.

    When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original.  Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.

  • Best way to handle all erros and get performance(OCI)?

    Hi there,
    Im using[b] Oracle Call Interface to execute batch file process. But I have got a problem.
    I set ExecuteBatch with the same number of commit time, i.e: 100, 1000 or just 10, for thats ok.
    ((OraclePreparedStatement)globalStmt).setExecuteBatch(commit);
    And I handle executeUpdate to catch all SQL Exceptions. I made some proposital files with invalid erros but when I handle "executeUpdate" its doesnt get the corrent error line, and puts out another line that is corret.
    ((OraclePreparedStatement)globalStmt).executeUpdate();
    Check in the code I concluded that its always get the same sequence of commit number like the error line. For example, I have between line 1 - 50 a line error, this line is 31, but I set the commit time for 50, its show me that line errror is 50 wherever 31. But if I put setExecuteBatch with '1' so it can handle corret lines erros, but the system performance bring down. What is the best way to handle all erros and keep the perfronace?
    Sorry for my english, I am not native. Thanks all.

    So by doing this, everything will transfer and look exactly the way I have it on the old machine?
    That is correct, if your old machine is Intel based after using MA the new machine will look just like the old machine. Here is information from Apple on MA, I'd recommend looking it over.
    My recommendation is to answer NO when setting up the new machine when it asks "Are you moving from another Mac?" The reason being let you new machine get set up and run for a couple of hours to ensure it's fine. Then launch MA and follow the prompts, it's very easy and if you use a fast connection like FW it should go smoothly.

  • What is the best way to captue current date and time?

    I got a field in table to capute current date and time...i am
    using SQL Server.
    field name datatype length
    enter_datetime datetime 8
    What is the best way to get current date and time and insert
    to table?.
    Is this way?.
    <cfset curtime = 'dateformat(#now()#,'mm/dd/yyyy')&"
    "&timeformat(#now()#,'hh:mm:ss')'>
    This way looks like time is not entered correctly.
    or any other better way?.

    > get current date and time and insert to table?
    You can use cfqueryparam
    <cfqueryparam value="#now()#"
    cfsqltype="cf_sql_timestamp">
    Or as was suggested, set the default for your table column to
    getdate(). Then you won't have to insert anything. Sql server will
    do it automatically when a new record is created.

  • Given ipod from someone best way to delete their music and add to my apple id

    Have been given ipod from someone what is best way to delete their music and then sync to my itumes and apple id

    Hi Caz0,
    You might want to try to factory reset the iPod to wipe it completely. Here's a link on how to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1339
    As far as I'm aware an iPod Classic isn't tied to an Apple ID, therefore all you need to do is factory reset the iPod, sync your music library and plug in headphones, and you're ready to go!
    Good Luck,
    Stefan

  • Best way to move the distribution and subscriber to another server

    What is the best way to move the distribution and subscriber role to a different server for transactional replication?
    Stop activity on the publisher then script out the drop and create and point to the new ones?
    The publisher will remain the same server.
    Thank you!
    Paula

    Hi Paula,
    According to your description, you want to move distribution database and subscription database to a different server.
    Firstly, to move distribution database without dropping and recreating the replication topology, you could follow the steps in the
    article . However, the best way I recommend is to remove the replication, create the distribution on the new server, and recreate publication and subscription.
    To make this process simple, you could use SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to generate scripts and run the scripts to recreate publications and subscriptions or drop publications and subscriptions as the screenshot below. Checking ‘To create or enable
    the components’ generates the script for creating the publications and subscriptions, and Checking ‘To drop or disable the components’ generates the script for dropping the publications and subscriptions.
    Firstly, please use SSMS to generate the script which is used to create publications and subscriptions.
    1.Connect to Publisher, or Subscriber in SSMS, and then expand the server node.
    2.Right-click the Replication folder, and then click Generate Scripts.
    3.In the Generate SQL Script dialog box, check ‘To create or enable the components’.
    4.Click Script to File.
    5.Enter a file name in the Script File Location dialog box, and then click Save. A status message is displayed.
    6.Click OK, and then click Close. For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152483.aspx.
    Secondly, follow the steps above, check ‘To drop or disable the components’ to generate the script used to drop publications and subscriptions. Then run the script to drop publications and subscriptions.
    Thirdly, please disable distribution using Transact-SQL or SSMS following the steps in the article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152757(v=sql.105).aspx.
    Fourthly, please create the distribution at the new server using Transact-SQL or SSMS following the steps in the article:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms151192.aspx#TsqlProcedure.
    Last, please run the script generated in the first step to recreate publications and subscriptions.
