Best way to remove noise and artifact - CS3

Hello folks,
Currently I'm struggling with a stock agency on a few images where the rejection is for "Artifact" and "Noise". First, let me ask - are these the same? They sometimes list these problems independently. They state that "camera setting and RAW processing are the likely cause". I don't "think" my camera settings are the problem - 100 ISO, 16.7mp RAW's.
So the question is this; how do I tell if I have these issues in a file? They are inspected at 100%.
Next, if I have these issues, what is the best way to fix them? I know of the noise reduction filter, however, not sure of the best settings. Or, should I be considering 3rd party software?
Thanks for any help!

I see two particular things in your pic that could be considered "artifacts":
- You have several sensor dust spots that show up in the sky. These should be cloned or healed out.
- You have pretty high edge sharpening applied to this image. What sharpening setting are you using in DPP? You need to be careful with DPP sharpening because it can be deceiving. Even a low amount of sharpening in DPP is the equivalent of fairly high USM sharpening in Photoshop. The difference is that DPP uses a threshold that applies the sharpening only to edges.
Regarding noise, I don't see much if any. In fact, it looks to me that a fair amount of noise reduction, possibly in DPP, has been applied that is smearing the detail to some extent. Check the noise reduction settings you are using in DPP. For an ISO 100 image, you should be able to get away with almost zero noise reduction unless you are having to push the exposure.
Finally, and please take this as constructive criticism, the composition of the image leaves a little bit to be desired. My first reaction was "this would be a fantastic image if it wasn't for those trees and buildings". I mention this because that may be playing an indirect role in the rejection - they may feel that the minor defects are enough to disqualify a less-than-compelling image. If you have the pixels and it meets their submission guidelines, I would suggest cropping the image to include only the mountains and the tops of the trees (without the buildings). That might help you along also.
Hope that helps.

  • Best way to remove Noise and Artifact CS3 - Take 2

    Good Morning folks,
Sorry to bring this up again, I need to beat this and I know I can get the right help here-----------------
I've hit a high on the frustration level last night when the stock agency rejected 3 more images for these reasons again!  So now I'm douting my work, camera and processing and I want to conquer this!  They keep complaining of artifact!  First, how do I see if my images have this?  I check my work at 100% - scanning very closely.
Here's my routine - images taken with 16.7 MP with high end 2.8 lens, processed in ACR with these following normal adjustment: levels as needed (making sure not to over do them), add +8 ~ 10 Clarity Vibrance and Saturation.  Then, at 100% view, I check for lens correction, and last I add 50% sharpening.  Once done, save the file as JPEG, and a final check it in PS CS3 - which is one last Save (which they also say I do too much).  For the record, I make sure I only save one time in PS.  I know that JPEG's are losey files.
So here are some of my questions:
Is it better to save the file as a Tiff, do the last check in PS and then save as a JPEG?
How can I tell if I have artifact?  What does it look like?
What else can I do to improve my image quality for them?
Thanks for any help - suggestions------
    Very Frustrated,
    Jan

Bill, thanks for the response!  I will take a look at that program.
What I'm having problems with is just getting good images for a stock agency.  I'm using a 16.7 mp camera, I really believe my problem is the processing.  I photograph in RAW, however, the agency wants JPEGs so I was converting to that, cleaning them up, doing only one final save before I upload. I'm going to change it up now - RAW - Tiff - Jpeg last!
After reading the replys, I need to test to see what is working for the sharpening part.  I think I'm over doing it and that's where the artifact is coming in.  they say the stock agencies inspect at 100%, so do I, but now I think I know what to look for - I didn't before.
    Forging ahead,

  • Best way to remove applications and unneeded files

I have an Imac running slow. Duo Core processor. 4 mgs Ram. Disabled Java in Safari. Getting all my photos off the computer. Safari runs slow. Beachball forever. Have removed past Mac Keeper. Want to know the best way (Until I can add more RAM, if I can, to speed up my mac. I have had to purchase Adobe Cloud to replace Photoshop etc and want to remove all files on my computer not needed for Adobe and any other files slowing down my computer. Also, need Safari to be working. I wait for ever for pages to load and to access Gmail. Want to defragment my hard drive as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • What is the best way to remove noise spikes?

I interviewed my father in-law and he tends to clear his throat a lot. So I end up with these loud noise "spikes". What I have been doing is setting 4 points around it, then lowering the section. Seems to work, but it is noticable when playing back. Are there any better ways to do this?
    Before:
    After:

    Cutaways, cutaways and more cutaways!
Try to remember this when shooting.
If you'd shot some views of that lamp in the corner of the room, you could have cut one in and removed the unwanted audio.
Watch carefully during interviews etc on TV.
You might be able to mix in a little ambient sound to disguise your edit, but basically, you're doing about all you can under the circumstances - unless you have something you can use as cutaways. (Another angle, or a shot of the window, something relevant to what he's talking about - even the front of the house, or the garden if it's at all relevant).

  • Best way to remove osx.1,5

I never use osx on my G3 iMac and would love to remove it so as just to run on 9.2.2 .. Not sure of the best way to remove osx and all the associated applications.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Davit

If you can still boot to OS X, use the freeware AppDelete @ http://reggie.ashworth.googlepages.com/appdelete to delete your applications & associated files.
Once you have deleted the OS X applications & files, reboot into OS 9.2. Then drag the OS X system folder to the Trash & empty trash. Some of the OS X invisible files may still remain on the HD, but they won't hinder the OS 9 operation & shouldn't take up too much space on your HD.
What version of OS X do you have installed? Most users want to delete OS 9, not OS X. Most OS 9 browsers & mail programs are (almost?) obsolete for today's web. In the near future your OS 9 browser may not work on many websites & you'll want an operational browser which requires OS X. Unless you need more space on your hard drive, I would leave OS X installed.

  • Best way to remove last line-feed in text file

What is the best way to remove last line-feed in text file? (so that the last line of text is the last line, not a line-feed). The best I can come up with is: echo -n "$(cat file.txt)" > newfile.txt
(as echo -n will remove all trailing newline characters)

What is the best way to remove last line-feed in text file? (so that the last line of text is the last line, not a line-feed). The best I can come up with is: echo -n "$(cat file.txt)" > newfile.txt
(as echo -n will remove all trailing newline characters)
According to my experiments, you have removed all line terminators from the file, and replaced those between lines with a space.
That is to say, you have turned a multi-line file into one long line with no line terminator.
If that is what you want, and your files are not very big, then your echo statement might be all you need.
If you need to deal with larger files, you could try using the 'tr' command, and something like
    tr '
    ' ' ' <file.txt >newfile.txt
The only problem with this is, it will most likely give you a trailing space, as the last newline is going to be converted to a space. If that is not acceptable, then something else will have to be arranged.
However, if you really want to maintain a multi-line file, but remove just the very last line terminator, that gets a bit more complicated. This might work for you:
    perl -ne '
    chomp;
    print "
    " if $n++ != 0;
    print;
    ' file.txt >newfile.txt
You can use cat -e to see which lines have newlines, and you should see that the last line does not have a newline, but all the others still do.
I guess if you really did mean to remove all newline characters and replace them with a space, except for the last line, then a modification of the above perl script would do that:
    perl -ne '
    chomp;
    print " " if $n++ != 0;
    print;
    ' file.txt >newfile.txt
Am I even close to understanding what you are asking for?

  • Best way to remove duplicates based on multiple tables

    Hi,
I have a mechanism which loads flat files into multiple tables (can be up to 6 different tables) using external tables.
Whenever a new file arrives, I need to insert duplicate rows to a side table, but the duplicate rows are to be searched in all 6 tables according to a given set of columns which exist in all of them.
In the SQL Server Version of the same mechanism (which i'm migrating to Oracle) it uses an additional "UNIQUE" table with only 2 columns(Checksum1, Checksum2) which hold the checksum values of 2 different sets of columns per inserted record. when a new file arrives it computes these 2 checksums for every record and look it up in the unique table to avoid searching all the different tables.
We know that working with checksums is not bulletproof but with those sets of fields it seems to work.
    My questions are:
should I use the same checksums mechanism? if so, should I use the owa_opt_lock.checksum function to calculate the checksums?
Or should I look for duplicates in all tables one after the other (indexing some of the columns we check for duplicates with)?
    Note:
These tables are partitioned with day partitions and can be very large.
    Any advice would be welcome.
    Thanks.

    >
I need to keep duplicate rows in a side table and not load them into table1...table6
    >
Does that mean that you don't want ANY row if it has a duplicate on your 6 columns?
Let's say I have six records that have identical values for your 6 columns. One record meets the condition for table1, one for table2 and so on.
Do you want to keep one of these records and put the other 5 in the side table? If so, which one should be kept?
Or do you want all 6 records put in the side table?
You could delete the duplicates from the temp table as the first step. Or better
    1. add a new column WHICH_TABLE NUMBER to the temp table
    2. update the new column to -1 for records that are dups.
    3. update the new column (might be done with one query) to set the table number based on the conditions for each table
    4. INSERT INTO TABLE1 SELECT * FROM TEMP_TABLE WHERE WHICH_TABLE = 1
    INSERT INTO TABLE6 SELECT * FROM TEMP_TABLE WHERE WHICH_TABLE = 6
When you are done the WHICH_TABLE will be flagged with
    1. NULL if a record was not a DUP but was not inserted into any of your tables - possible error record to examine
    2. -1 if a record was a DUP
    3. 1 - if the record went to table 1 (2 for table 2 and so on)
This 'flag and then select' approach is more performant than deleting records after each select. Especially if the flagging can be done in one pass (full table scan).

  • What's the best way to remove inactive iChat users from jabberd2.db?

I'm about to run Autobuddy for users on my iChat server. However, there are several users that are no longer around and I don't want their records showing up in everyone's buddy list.
What's the safest/best way to remove them?
My plan is to use sqlite3 on the command line and use SQL to remove the entries from the "active" table, but I don't know what impact that may have on the rest of the database.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Never mind...

  • Best way to remove Stateful session beans

    Hi folks.
I'm running Weblogic 6.1. I'm trying to find the best way of removing
stateful session beans. I know to call EJBObject.remove() on the
client side, but this will not always happen if the client crashes or
times out. This is a java client application connection to weblogic,
    no servlets are involved.
Is there a way to signal the appserver to remove all stateful session
beans associated with a user when the User logs out? I would rather
not remove them using a time out mechanism.
    thanks.
    rob.

But in the documentation and also based on my experience I noticed that the

    How do you handle that?

not remove them using a time out mechanism.Had the same problem and solved it the following way :
    - The client has thread polling its sessionbean at the server (every 30
    Sec.)
    - The session bean has a short timeout (2 Minutes)
If the client fails, the timeout will catch it otherwise the client will
    gracefully call remove bevor exit.

  • What is the best way to remove footage from the middle of a clip?

What is the best way to remove unwanted footage from the middle of a clip? I have a clip that I've trimmed from the start and finsih, but I need to remove "boring" footage from inbetween.

Thank you for your replies. I tried the blade tool followed by select and delete but it did not seem very precise. I had better success with this aproach at the ends rather than in the middle. I watched a tutorial video on using the precision editor, but the video was small so I had a difficult time following where the person clicked, etc. Any info on using the precision editor would be greatly appreciated. I need to make precise cuts to avoid creating unatural motion for the subject. So far, close but no cigar.

  • Best way to remove glare from glasses

I ended up having a picture take with a point and shoot camera.  What would be the best way to remove or at least look presentable to remove the glare from the glasses from one side?  It is bad but I want this picture to be as good as I can get it.

First I did Juergen's method and merged down the two layers.
    Now to improve the lighting...
    1. Add a Level adjustment layer. These were the original Levels settings:
    2. I moved the sliders like this to lighten the whole picture.
    3. I went one step further to lighten the background. Added another Levels and moved the middle slider left. This however also lightened the men further which I did not want to do, so on the layer's mask I painted over the men with black to mask out that portion of the Levels adjustment and reveal the previous Levels adjustment.
Rather than painting black you can select the men and on the mask fill the selection with black. In either case if you revealed too much or too little of the first Levels layer you can fine-tune the mask by painting black or white as needed.
