Best way to report on Computer Usage

Is there any magic report that will tell me if machines are NOT being utilized?
I know you can do Software metering for Apps, but I just need to know if a machine is being used or not. I read where you can do powermanagement reports, but I'm not sure how accurate that information would be.

I had this same discussion come up at a customer last week. It really comes down to your definition of "usage". This is a very ambiguous term so you really need to define in it technical terms and the goal(s)/purpose(s) of have this information.
At this customer, we certainly did start with the power management reports as suggested by Garth. We also looked at this

Best way to report on multiple libraries

SharePoint 2010.
We have 1,600 subsites all the same forms library, which has 10-15 content types in:
All the content types have these fields that are published to the library. All the fields are the same.   Each file has unique naming conversation, based on the site, etc.
Each document goes through a workflow lifecyle.   Pending , Approved, Rejected.
If I wanted some form of Reporting based on all the docs, in all the sub sites... What is the best way to approach this.
I've seen the posted on a single list....   but this requirement is 1,600 libraries...

You don't say what type of reporting that you want to do? I'm assuming that it is probably something like displaying the last 1000 most recently approved forms or similar?
If that's the case then you may be able to achieve what you need using the Search Core Results Web Part with some clever querying and is likely to be the most performant method.
Once you have a result set back, you can then look at styling this using XSLT in the SCRWP or alternatively look at using the Search Query Model from code in a farm solution/webpart.
Alternatively you could look at using SSIS to extract the data using the SharePoint List into a SQL table on a nightly basis. (This article covers how to get data out of SharePoint and into SSIS..

Best Way To Manage 1 Computer from Another

I got my mom a MacBook and I have a MacBook Pro. She's new to Mac and is very unfamiliar with it. Every now and then she runs across issues she can't resolve herself. I'd like to be able to access her computer from my computer while we are in different cities.
What's the best way to do this? VPN?

Best way to mount one computer's HD on another?

I'd like to keep some of the files between the two in sync, and I have a 3rd party software program that will synchronize the contents of two specified folders. The trouble is, I'm not sure how to mount the laptop's HD on the desktop. What is the best way to do this, given that enabling "file sharing" from the system preferences doesn't seem to accomplish the task, and OS X does not seem capable of mounting an SFTP-accessible volume. Any advice?

File Sharing is the most obvious way. Please see this page for the method:

When you establish the connection you will only have access to the Public Folder, but you can log in to the remote computer using the usual account and password name.
Another method is to use FireWire Target Mode: connect the two computers via a 6-pin FireWire cable (the 'target' one must be off) and boot the target machine while holding the T key down. Full instructions here:

In order to do actual syncing you will need a program capable of doing this over a network connection: FoldersSynchronizer can do this, though I don't know whether it can do it over FireWire Target mode - it should do, I would have thought.

If you have encountered a specific problem with a reproducible testcase (functionality not working, problems installing) then please work with support to log a TAR. This way a bug can be logged and tracked by the dev team.

If you are using Migration Assistant with a WiFi connection expect 12+ hours, 24 hours is possible.
If you are using hardwired network connections expect 4 to 8 hours.

Best way to Report on OS and Security Update Status?

Now that our OS X roll-out is nearly complete, we need to be able to get reports on all client mMacs , their OS versions and, more specifically, their security update status.
The "Software Difference" report seems to be falling short on showing the information we're looking for. And the "System Overview" report seems only to show straight OS and point-release level, not security update info.
Can someone recommend a better way to get this information?

I haven't come across a command that can show what updates have been installed, but to see a list of updates that a computer needs, try sending
softwareupdate -l
(that's the lower-case letter L as in "list") through the Send Unix Command (send as root). Here's the full details of the command:
usage: softwareupdate <mode> [<args> ...]
     -l | --list          List all appropriate updates
     -d | --download          Download Only
     -i | --install          Install
          <label> ...     specific updates
          -a | --all          all appropriate updates

Best way to work w/computer builder???

i am a relative newbie and am
about to get a new system for working w/cs5.
i want to be able to do hd..but nothing too fancy (weddings,sports,training...usual beginning videographer stuff).
i can go along w/harm's advice that the dells and hps etc. will overcharge for the upgrades etc....but i don't want to build it myself...how do i approach and deal with a computer builder...can anyone recommend one....what should i look out for and how can i know they know what they are talking about...

I have always done things a little bit differently from Harm's suggestion, but do see the value of that.
I provide a list of desired components, and then we work over each one. I try to be perfectly open to suggestions, so long as the builder can explain and justify his/her choices. Now, I have had some very good builders, and the most recent one has proved to be excellent. I usually end up with about 90% of what I spec'ed. and then allow myself to be talked into the other 10%, with proper justification. Though this gentleman builds mostly heavy-duty medical 3D imaging rigs, he understands NLE and still imaging very well. As he is constantly building, or upgrading the hospital's/research institute's machines, he is able to stay more atop the hardware improvements, better than I can - even with Harm's wonderful input.
Now, before this gentleman, I found myself between builders. One had moved far away, and the other had left the business completely. I did about what Harm recommends, and quickly eliminated four builders in a hurry. One said that XP-Pro could not use multiple CPU's (claimed that only Windows Server 2003 could do this), while another said that only SLI would work for Photoshop. Yet another did not understand why I wanted so many large HDD's. Gone from the list in a hurry. Same complaint when I wanted 4GB RAM - he would only build with 2GB, as XP-Pro could not use even that fully.
Good luck, and when you find the right builder for you, support them, so that they will be around, when you build that next machine.

What's the best way to report a fault?

How exactly do you report it? Is there a particular method or should I just send them an email or, something? I've found for instance on BT.com a link to "diagnostics.bt.com" that claims it'll solve my connectivity issues but when I try and use it, it just says I don't appear to be using a Home Hub (which is correct, I have a HH5 but I don't use it, I connect using an Openreach HG612 modem and my own 7800DXL router). I'm just wondering if I connect my HH5 up so this particular test will actually work, will it just faff around giving me troubleshooting tips or just say "there doesn't appear to be anything wrong so sod off" message or will it give me the choice of reporting a fault.
I've done a speed test on the wholesale website and that was inconclusive or didn't think anything was wrong (there clearly is, my connection was fine right up until mid March when it started to become unstable and it's dropping regularly ever since and has caused my speed to droped from 37mbit to below 27mbit). I did pos ton here about the issue actually but that didn't really confirm anything, think general consensus was I have a fault somewhere.

Best way to Report on data spread over 2 seperate BI instances

Scenario.
BI_Instance_1 has InfoCube_X (The Datawarehouse is attached to an r/3 system)
BI_Instance_2 has InfoCube_Y (This is a legacy datawarehouse, no r/3 connection)
Requirement to include information from InfoCube_X in with information from InfoCube_Y.
Is there an issue with the InfoCubes being on seperate instances?
Can a MuliProvider straddle the two instances?
Would it be better to extract the required data from the BI_Instance_1 to a flat file and then import it into BI_Instance_2.
Any comments appreciated.

You really should use different SSIDs for voice and data. That way you can configure QoS.
As far as moving the clients over you could either just configure the SSID to use only 802.11a or you could use bandselect. With bandselect it will push the clients to 'a' but if the client can't support 'a' is will still allow it to join on 'b/g'.

Best way to set up ram usage

I got a macbook with 8 gb. Is there a way to set up the use of this ram so I get most out of it.

Start up your macbook and OS X will use the RAM. That is about all you can do. If you attempt to do more you will in all likelihood make things worst.

Make a external drive clone of 10.5, then when you upgrade at your friends house and if later find out it's not working for you, you can option boot off the clone and restore 10.5 like you had before.
10.6 is a good upgrade, shouldn't be harsh on you and should be a bit more snappier.
As always check with MacTracker that your machine can handle it, your third party software may require updaing.

What's the best way of displaying output in other VI ?

For example, in a sub-vi I continuously acquire a motor position, and I want the position value to be displayed simultaneously in a numerical indicator or waveform in the main vi.
I know there are lots of ways to implement this easily, but I just want to know what's the best way which use lest computer resources, say memory....
Can control reference be used effectively for this?
