Best way to restore old mac backup to new machine?

Purchased a new MacBook Pro to replace old MacBook. In the mean time the drive in the old machine has failed, so can't migrate from machine to machine. I do have old machine drive backed up via Time Machine on a firewire external drive.
What's the best way to get my files and setting to the new machine?
Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Your best bet is Migration Assistant, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Just attach your TM drive, start up MA, and it'll walk you through.
One suggestion: do not turn TM on yet. Be sure you've got everything you need off your TM drive, then erase it so TM can start over with the new Mac.

    Hi All,
Am creating a new test server by cloning the production server. Creating Dbs by restoring the production backup but wondering is there any best way to update the linked server names in open query of few SPs other than manual checking and updating.
    Thanks,

It will not update the stored procedure rather it generates the scripts. You can validate and execute the script later.

  • Moving from Late 2008 MB to Late 2008 MBP... best way to restore via TM?

    Hello,
My Late 2008 Macbook was involved in an accident (RIP). I had hopes the HDD would still work okay, but it just beeps at me and is unable to load anything.
So, I've already ordered my replacement Mac. I ended up ordering the 2.53 Late 2008 MBP refurbed from Apple.
I need to eventually restore my data on here. Fortunately I had Time Machine setup with my backup applications and files. What is the best way to restore my applications/settings on the New Macbook? Migration Assistant? Archive and Install?
The previous Macbook had a problem when opening Safari, sometimes it would take a few seconds longer than normal to load with the beachball. I'm trying to avoid migrating the issues I had previously onto the new system, so ideally I'd have a fresh OS X install, but with all of my applications and settings intact. Is there an ideal way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

I understand completely about wanting to have a fresh OS to start out from to minimize any performance issues and whatnot.
As far as I can imagine, the only way to do this with all your settings and files intact is to do the Time Machine restore, then Archive and Install after (aka Option 2). However, I would evaluate the performance of the system before doing the Archive and Install. I have a feeling that you'll think its more than satisfactory and not feel the need to do the A&I at all.
As to the Safari issue, it was probably a .plist file corruption or something like that which is very simple to fix. If the new machine presents the same issue with Safari as the old one, I'm pretty confident that we can fix that up quite easily.

Myth: iCloud restore more reliable than itunes restore. This is is simply wrong. States most reliable way to backup & restore an #ipad is via the cloud. More later. http://techglobex.blogspot.com/2012/04/transfer-and-exchange-old-ipad-data.html …

What is the best way to do a full backup of my Mid 2011 MBA running 10.8.4?

My apologies for not clearly specifying purpose of full backup.
I would like to make a full backup of my MBA from which to restore in case of a problem. I am planning to do some clean up of my machine and want to have the ability to restore in case I inadvertently do something that will cause a problem.
Regarding Time Machine, I have had problems with that application and I am baffled by some of its behavior and lack of clear documentation of its terminology.
    OK.
The disadvantage of a clone is that it only contains a copy of the drive at the time the clone was made, so if you need to restore the drive the clone must be up to date. Carbon Copy can be set to incrementally update on a schedule of your choice (I do it every day). The update tends to be quick however as only changed or new files need to be copied.
Time Machine if used as designed will always be up to date, so it has an advantage for long term backup.
As a backup system a clone is not adequate on its own, it lacks versioning (the ability to recover an earlier version of the file than the current, or last backed up version)
I prefer clones for disaster recovery, and Time Machine (or a similar alternative) for backup, I also keep long term archives for files that I do not want to lose regardless of age.

  • Best way to restore machine?

I had an iMac drive become un-repairable. I was able to mount it and make a bootable copy with super duper. My question is which is the best way to restore the iMac drive. Should I just have super duper make a bootable copy back on the iMac drive or should I do a clean install of 10.5 then use the migration assistant to restore applications and documents.... any information would be great, first time I have ever had to do this to any of my machines.
    Bob

I assume that you have tested the clone & it has inherited no problems from the un-repairable iMac drive. If this is not true, first boot from your Installer DVD & run its copy of Disk Utility (found under the Utilities menu). Select the clone drive (not the partition indented under it) in the list at the left of Disk Utility's First Aid tab & click "Repair disk." If that shows no problems, or is able to fix any it finds, then re-cloning the clone back to your iMac's drive should be fine; otherwise do a fresh install of the OS onto the iMac drive.
I am assuming here that you have only one visible partition currently on the iMac drive, that being the HFS+ volume containing the Leopard installation that you normally boot from. (IOW, you don't have a Boot Camp partition or other volumes on the drive used for data storage.) If this is not true, please say so because the following will render any data currently on any partition of the iMac drive unrecoverable by normal means!
Prior to restoring the clone to the iMac drive, it is a good idea to reformat it. This is because the drive may have problems in the partition scheme information that defines volumes & other partitions on it. Just erasing or overwriting a volume does not touch this information. Formatting the drive rewrites this information as well as erasing & recreating the directory structures that define each volume. (A normal erase of a volume just replaces its directory structures with new, empty ones. It does not actually erase the files listed in the old directory. In general, it is not necessary to do a secure erase of a volume, which does overwrite the files, unless you are selling the iMac.)
To reformat the drive, boot from another source, such as the working & tested clone or your installer DVD, & run Disk Utility. Select the iMac drive from the list (again being careful not to select a partition indented under it) & click the "Partition" tab. Select the number of partitions you want from the popup (most people need only one), then click the "Options..." button & make sure the partition scheme is GUID Partition Table (assuming your iMac is an Intel-based one) or the Apple Partition Map (if you have a PPC iMac). For an internal drive the correct scheme should already be selected -- this is just a check to make sure it is.
Once everything is set as you want, click the "Apply" button & confirm this in the 'Are you sure?' dialog. Formatting is quick, typically taking much less than a minute, & assures that the partition scheme, volume info, & file system(s) are fresh & free of any prior corruption.

  • Can I restore my mac from a Time Machine backup once I have used BootCamp to partition and set up Windows (without erasing all of the Windows content)?

A few months ago I partitioned my mac using BootCamp and successfully installed Windows and a few Windows-only programs (games).  I never restored my mac from the Time Machine backup and now I would really like all of my files back on my mac.  I am wondering if I insert the osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup, will that get rid of the partition I made for Windows?  Will the Windows side of my hard drive stay in tact or will everything on that side get erased when I restore the mac side from the Time Machine backup.  It was a HUUUUUUUGE pain to do the BootCamp partition and get everything Windows set up and I would really like to not have to do that all over again.  I just want to make sure that if I insert the mac osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup it will only affect the Mac partition, NOT the Windows partition.

    Hi,
Time Machine does not touch your BootCamp Windows.
It simply said ignores it completely.
Nonetheless, I am curious as to why you wanna restore a Time Machine backup.
Usually during partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant in OSX to make the Windows partition your OSX stays intact.
    Regards

  • What's the best way to update my Mac with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player?

I've been getting prompts whenever I look at certain websites to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.  I'm skeptical as to responding to those prompts.  What is the best way to update my Mac Pro with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player?

You might also want to consider uninstalling Adobe Flash... I currently don't have it installed and haven't needed to install it.  Most websites are now coded in HTML 5 so that the iOS devices can actually visit them.  I can still watch YouTube videos et al.  About the only thing I can't do is play Flash games... but they're a resource hog anyways.
Try going without for a day or two and see just how many sites you visit no longer require it.  A lot of people keep it installed out of habit, not out of necessity.  If you have Flash installed, visit a site and it's out of date, it will tell you to update your Flash.  What it won't do is tell you is that had Flash not been installed, it would have used the HTML 5 code instead.  Think about it... if an iOS device can't run Flash at all... it can't visit this site if it were written only to use Flash.  What site would eliminate such a huge portion of their market base?  You'd be surprised at how many sites use HTML 5.  Uninstall Flash and see for yourself.

  • Best way to connect my Mac Air to my TV ?

What's the best way to connect my Mac Air to my TV ideally wirelesly so I can have meetings in the room displayed on the TV?
The TV has an HD port.

You're only option at this point in time for a wireless connection to your TV for mirroring your display is a product called McTivia, which runs around $180.
If wireless isn't absolutely necessary and you don't feel like shelling out that much cash, a simply HDMI cable and a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter would do the trick and save you over $100.

  • Restoring two macs from one time machine backup

A little while ago my mid 2010 MBP's HDD died on me. Whilst I was waiting to sort out my MBP, I restored from time machine to my mac mini so that I had a machine to work from. Then I fixed my MBP by installing new drives (SSD and HDD where the optical drive used to be), and using migration assitant to copy everything over from time machine (as the SSD boot drive was not big enough to do a simple restore). So now I technically have two machines the same, except my MBP is running Lion 10.7.5.
Only problem is when I try to update the MBP with Mavericks it tells me it cannot install on this machine. Is this because I restored the same original mac to two new machines? I cannnot open mac mail either on the MBP. There is about 55 GB of space on my boot drive, and my mac meets all the requirements for Mavericks (it was running it prior to the HDD dying, but because I installed dual drives it has complicated the restore process).
    Cheers for any help offered!
    Rich

Well I never did find a solution to this specific problem. So I simply went and bought a bigger SSD (the 480GB SSD M500), and did a restore to that drive from time machine, which worked perfectly. Now I shall just remove some of the more data hungry folders to my 1TB HDD installed in the optical drive bay. I shall no doubt be setting myself up for a more complicated restore procedure in the future, but hey ho, right now my machine is blisteringly fast!

  • Best way to duplicate Tiger Drive on a new HD?

    Hi,
My MacPro is still running Tiger on its orginal 250Mb HD. I don't want to get rid of Tiger as it will run my CoolScan 9000's Nikon Scan software. Leopard won't. I have purchased a new 1 TB WD Black drive and was intending to partition it with 400GB going to Tiger and 600GB going to Snow Leopard when it arrives. What is the best way to clone the Tiger drive to dupe it on the new drive? Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper? Or another way?
