Best Way to Retain Battery?

I've done some research and gathered that most people think that it's better to let you macbook sleep than shut it down all the time, but now I have another question... Is it better to run the battery down all the way then recharge all the way or just charge whenever or leave it plugged into the wall whenever possible? I want to keep my battery at it's best. Thanks

+*I got the idea from the cell phones, some where I read or heard that it is better to let it drain all the way down and recharge it all the way up , because then it messes the charging cycles and I have seen it happen.*+
Actually, that's not quite correct either. Cell phones for pretty much their entire existence (maybe excepting those when they first came out nearly 20 years when they were carried around in little bags) have used lithium ion batteries... pretty much the same technology used in the batteries in your MacBook. While it was true for older battery technologies such as nickel metal hydride and nickel cadmium that you needed to fully discharge and fully charge the batteries each time... this is no longer the case with newer battery technologies. The older batteries would exhibit what was called a "memory effect". If you regularly only used half the capacity... it would eventually only hold half the capacity. This is just one of those things that has been handed down from the good old battery days and doesn't seem to want to go way.

  • Best way to maintain battery?

    Hi,
I've heard a lot of conflicting reports about the best way to maintain ipod batteries. Does anyone have advice? I just got my nano yesterday and I would like the battery to last as long as possible.
    Thanks!
    Rachel

The following was copied from this link which includes a repeat of the other good information provided here.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month. If you use your iPod infrequently (gasp), you might want to add a reminder to your calendar program.
A properly maintained iPod battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 400 full charge and discharge cycles.
With a Lithium-based Battery, I don't believe it matters if you charge the battery when at 50%, etc. The main thing is to go thru at least one complete charge cycle per month.
Check http://www.apple.com/batteries/ about charge cycles with Lithium-ion Batteries.

  • Satellite U405 - What is the best way to increases battery life

    Hi everyone!
I've been looking for this quite a bit and all I could find are conflicting answers and some confusing instructions... :)
Even the PDF file for my U405 has some conflicting tips (is it recommended to fully discharge it or not?)
Let's say that I don't want to remove it and store it with a 40% charge in a low temperature location (?) because I also want to trust it as a UPS (power failures are common where I stay).
So, in short, what is the best way to prolong my battery life to its maximum? Should I fully discharge it once a month or only half way through? Should it never be fully charged or that's actually a good thing?
Thanks in advance for any wisdom anyone can offer on this!
    David

The best way would be indeed to put it out of the notebook, but you already said, you won't do this.
So, I would say to fully unload the battery once in a while and load it to a maximum.
This is all I can tell you right now, but don't know how much this will increase the battery's life.

  • Best Way To Optimize Battery Life?

Just got my new iphone and I'm just wondering what the best way to optimize/charge the battery is. With other cell phones I've been warned about overcharging (keeping it plugged in once it reaches 100%), and I've heard that this is not the case with the iPhone's lithium battery. Is this true?
Also, I've been hearing that I should avoid letting the battery drain and to charge it whenever I get the chance rather than waiting until it's getting close to dying. Once again, with other cell phones I've heard the opposite of this. Is this the best strategy?
    Thanks!

    Yes to both.

  • What's the best way to preserve battery life?

I know obviously make sure your backlight isn't always on and keep Wifi off, I've read www.apple.com/batteries throughout.
I'm talking about preserving the battery itself.
Like is it better to let the battery run all the way down before you recharge it or charge it as soon as it gets around 40-50% or every couple of days?
I have my blackberry which I charged every night regardless for months and months and now about a year later, the battery is basically crap and I'm lucky if I don't have to charge it every night now.
    Same concept apply?

Yup, the backlight is the biggest battery drain.

Rechargeable batteries don't last forever. I supervise a cell phone repair department. We generally tell customers that, with average use, a battery will last about a year. Heavy users, it can be six months. Many Blackberrys have big screens, too. Over time, no matter what you do, a rechargeable battery will lose capacity and eventually, not hold a charge. At least your Blackberry has a user replaceable battery and you can pick one up for less than $40 dollars!
    Best of luck.

  • Best way to extend battery life?

I have been using my IPAD with it being plugged in when I can.  I feel this may help to prolong battery life than for the battery to charge/discharge so often.  Any thoughts?  Thank you!

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Best way to charge battery of macbook air

i have a macbook air 13 inch 256 GB SSD. it is early 2014 version . i bought it in dec 18 2014. i have had 11 charge cycles up until now. the issue is that my battery full charge capacity has dropped from 7280 mah (100%) to 6818 may (95%) in a span of just 9 days . i fail to understand how it can be normal? my battery usage is normal . i charge my battery and take precautions as not to overcharge it . so once my battery is 100 % charged then i disconnect the cable and let the MAC run on battery. i do so because i have heard from many people not to keep the machine always plugged on charge. i want to know whether the % drop in my battery flu capacity happened because of my faulty charging practice? . please some expert tell me as what is the correct way to charge and use the MAC battery as i want to use it in a proper way . there is no constraint in my case as i normally use my MAC at a place where i keep it plugged all the time.
    thanks

    Hello!
This sharp drop in F.C.C. isn't normal no matter how you use your battery. The degradation of the F.C.C. should occur slowly over the span of months, not days.

  • Best way to preserve battery?

I just got a new macbook and I was wondering which of the two scenarios will best preserve my battery for better quality, or if it makes a difference at all:
    1) Charge my battery to full, unplug, use up battery to empty, and plug in to charge to full again. Repeat cycle always.
    2) Keep my macbook plugged in at all times when possible.
    Thanks everyone.
    MacBoook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I will try and answer your first question as best I can, as I am not completely sure about this.
What I have heard, is that the computer runs completely on the power adapter when plugged in. But the charger is also charging the battery at the same time. I'm pretty sure that the MacBook's power adapter, has two circuits inside. One is for powering the computer, the other is for charging the battery.
Your second statement is also partly true. The battery that is used in all current Apple notebooks are designed to automatically be used on battery no matter what from time to time. This is to help prevent the battery from dying a premature death by being plugged in all the time. What happens is that when the battery reaches the fully charges state, the computer begins to run on battery power, while still plugged in, but only for a short time. (Something like 3-5% I think.) This is to make sure that 1. the battery does not overcharge, and 2. the battery's ions move around a bit. (That keeps a battery healthy, thus, using the computers battery is good for it...)
Your third statement is also partly true. Batteries are only perfect for up to 300 charges, or so Apple says. Once you get to 300 cycles, the battery is not dead though. Apple states that all of their batteries are designed to hold about an 80% charge at full capacity once they reach 300 cycles. This said, your battery is going to die weather or not you leave it plugged in all the time, or use it like it is intended to be used. I for one recharge my battery whenever the low battery warning comes up, I don't wait for the computer to go to sleep, or I recharge it when it is low if I know I will need it later.
I still stand behind my recommendation that not leaving a battery plugged in and using it normally, will allow it to9 last longer than leaving it plugged in all the time. Here is a real life example that I personally have seen: My dad purchased a Gateway notebook 5 years ago, he has it plugged in all the time. My aunt purchased a IBM ThinkPad about 6 years ago, and only plugged the battery in when it died. Guess what, my aunt's old notebook runs on battery for almost 3 hours after 6 years, my dads battery on the other hand last about ~30 minutes at the most.

  • Best way to exercise battery?

New 17" MBP, New User, sure this has been asked before.
What level should the battery be routinely discharged to before a recharge?
This unit is usually plugged into AC in my motor-home, but I was curious about this question. I'm at 67% right now, so at what percentage left should I go back to AC to recharge?
    Thanks for your input,

Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   EX Microsoft oem system builder

On a routing exercise I normally discharge my battery to anywhere between 40 and 60%. Discharging until it sleeps is not a good thing to do on a regular basis outside of a (no more than) monthly calibration.

I am not aware of an application that would extend your battery life. Have a great day!

  • What is the best way to import and edit a large amount of footage?

    Hello Apple world,
As a newbie to Final Cut 10 I have a question regarding best ways to import footage. I'll give you a quick run down.
I have a 150 gig of gopro footage that I just hit 'import' to recently (from my external HD), it took around 10 hours to process it all.
Its all under one event, but then somewhat organised into dates etc. But it is very slow. I imported it all at once because it was all footage from the last 6 months of my Whistler/states/fiji trip and want to make a movie out of it, using clips from all over the time, not just in chronological order.
I have the latest mac book pro, 4 gig ram,2.4 GHz i7, 750 hard drive, with nothing else on the computer.
Ive read about creating proxy media, after ive imported, but am still somewhat confused as to the benefit. Does it create duplicates? that will fill up my pretty large HD as it is!
Can you suggest any ways that might make my laptop run a bit faster? Should i delete and work directly from external HD etc etc?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

    My questions:
    1)  What is the best way to start a new project and import the footage without having to render whilst editing, so as to retain all resolution and originality of the source footage?
    2)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to export this same footage once editing is complete so as to retain that crisp 1080p for which the 5D is so recognized?
    3)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to import and export/ render between premiere and after effects?  I am speaking mostly of vfx and color correction.  I also have some 30fps footage that I intend to slow down in AE and then import into premiere.
I know this is pretty broad, but as a solo filmmaker I really need someone's guidance.  I rarely ever finish my films with the same, crisp look as the footage.  I need pipeline help, and really appreciate it!
    1. Follow the advice above. Also use the Media Browser to import the footage in case you have spanned media files. Import files with the Media Browser.
