Best way to sell?

Hello,
Ive been back in forth between upgrading to a blackbook and staying put with what I have and as I weigh my options I cant seem to decide what the best route would be for selling my old macbook. Unfortunately, none of my friends are interested in buying it so my options are limited to ebay, and a trade-in on powermax.com. Has anybody done a trade-in with them before? They have offered me 790$ for my macbook, but there is a 4 to 6 week inspection wait before they actually give you that money. Any help, input, or ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance.
Joe

Actually, $800 for a used MacBook (provided it's a basic model) doesn't sound all that bad. I wouldn't be thrilled about having to give it to them today... and not getting the $$ for a month and a half though. I would imagine you would want that money to get your new MacBook. You could give them a perfectly good MacBook... and during that 6 week "inspection" period, who knows what they could do to it and claim there was a problem and offer you less. eBay isn't a bad option. To be honest... the other option, which may be best, is just keep what you have. Why are you looking to get a new MacBook?

  • Best way to sell digital photos?

Is there a way to sell digital photos through iWeb? Or is there a way to add SmugMug to an iWeb template? I have plenty of experience with Paypal and eBay and whatnot, but digital downloads is new to me, and am not quite sure of where to start.

OK, since I last posted, here's what I've done...
In iMovie 08 (which I never use because I really don't want to learn anything new - I like iMovie HD and will stick with it) I managed to put the photos into a "movie" that is about 2 hours long (each photo shows on the screen for 4 sec. with a 1 sec. transition before and after it). Then I decided to add music, so I bought songs from iTunes and added them. Now I'm trying to burn it all to a DVD that will play on a computer where I work, which uses Windows as their OS. I can't figure out how to burn to a DVD, though. I tried opening the movie with iDVD, but it wasn't even an option. The movie title was grayed out so I couldn't select it. Now I'm exporting it to my desktop, where I can hopefully do more with it. Any suggestions on how to get this onto a DVD?
    Thanks again.

  • Best Way To Sell My Air?

256gb, i7, 8gb ram. 11" June 2012 model. Only 3 1/2 months old. I dont want to get less than $1000. Will any trade in place pay this much? Gazelle, Amazon, and Apple Recycle offer about $675. Waaaaay to low considering mine is like new. Im trying eBay but im nervous about it. Already posted in craiglist with only spam coming. What do you guys suggest?

Take high quality pictures, describe your product accurately, and most importantly, require signature confirmation upon delivery.
I would add to this take pictures and screenshots of the Mac's serial number. Post them in the listing. eBay buyer fraud - in which a perfectly good MacBook is sold but a different, water-damaged MacBook is returned - has been a growing problem for sellers recently.
    Do not offer return policy.
This is not possible. A seller must accept returns for anything "significantly not as described" which is exactly how the above buyer fraud operates. If the seller refuses to refund a buyer's money, eBay summarily seizes the PayPal assets and suspends the seller's account. For many selllers, PayPal places a 45 day hold on all funds received so they can't take a buyer's money and disappear.
Failure to include a return procedure will accomplish nothing except to dissuade potential buyers and significantly reduce the selling price.
Buyers don't just hold the upper hand on eBay, they hold the whole deck.

  • Best way to sell iMac

I have a new imac that is about 2 months old. While I really like it, I am looking to get a portable computer. I put it on criags list   but it seems like everyone wants a mac book. I do not blame them, but any suggestions on how to sell this for a fair price. I am tired of people asking for 700 dollars when this is a 1200 computer only 2 months old.

Leave it on Craigs List and make it clear low ballers will be ignored. Promote it with photographs and a good description of anything extra that comes with it such as software and/or AppleCare.
At the same time create an Ebay auction and price it based on what similar machines are selling it for.

  • I want to sell my old macbook air, what is the best way to get my files and programs off of it?

I am going to sell my macbook air (2011) as I am replacing it with a macbook pro retina. I want to remove my files and programs from it before I sell it. What is the best way to go about this?

    1) Perform a Time Machine or Cloned image backup of your system.
    2) Test the Clone tomake sure it works, by booting to it (using the option key).
    3) Boot to the Recovery Partition, then perform an erasure, followed by a reinstallation of the OS.
    4) Shut off the Mac, after instllation and before the reboot. This will permit the next user to experience a "fresh out of the box" experience.
    5) Use the Time Machine or Cloned image to migrate your apps, users & files to your new system, using SETUP ASSISTANT. Do not use Migration Assistant.

  • Best Way to Upgrade or Sell?

You can see my computer components in my sig, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to unload my MB, RAM, Video card & CPU w/fan and not feel like I'm throwing it away for the sake of upgrading to a newer setup.
Any insight? I feel like I'd prolly get raked over the coals on Ebay...

I assume it's a 865G Neo2-LS. No telling what you would get for parts but I would guess not near as much as you would want. I got about $87 for the sale of MB, CPU, VGA & sound cards on eBay from my old K7N2G-ILSR, Athlon XP 2500+ sytem. Enough to pay for my new MB ($75) & HSF (HSF $9 after rebate & sale price) when I built system about 3 months ago.
I would think you can get a bit more for your stuff though. Only way to find out is start looking on eBay and see what prices are for things you have.

  • What is the best way to deploy an application ??

    Hi,
Please advise me how to automate in a best way to Deploy 10 different applications(.ear/.war)
to 10 different Clusters(containing 40 Managed servers) in wls6.1......and that
    too in a Production environment.
I know that we can use weblogic Console to deploy an application BUT if i have
2 unix boxes and each box contains 4-4 clusters(each containing 16-20 managed
servers) .....then i have to open up 2 Admin server consoles to deploy each of
the respective applications and that too deploying these application to 8 clusters.....OR
i can use deploy commad to do the same.
AND if i have like 100 clusters .....then i would have to "deploy" 100 times ......
is there any way that we can BEST AUTOMATE this process.
    Thanks a lot.

Thanks Tommy. but i would like to know a very important point here: this is using
the weblogic.utility that you just talkd about.
Suppose iam having an ADMIN server that has say 10 clusters and 50 managed servers
    underneath to take care.
    1 cluster each = 5 managed server
now iam deploying a simple .war file to say a single managed server, i have found
out that it takes a looot of time to get the application deployed.
what do you say about this situation ?
what is the best approach ??????

To deploy the application from the command prompt in WebLogic 6.1 you
    use the
    following command
    $JAVA_HOME/bin/java -cp $WL_HOME/weblogic.jar weblogic.deploy -port $WEBLOGIC_PORT
    -host $WL_HOST_IP $WEBLOGIC_CMD $WEBLOGIC_PWD -component $WL_Server_NAME:$WL_Server_NAME
    $WL_APPLICATION_NAME YourApplication.war
$WEBLOGIC_CMD sould be DEPLOY for the first time deployment and UPDATE
    for redeployment
For deploying in a cluster you better create a shell script which call
    the above
command with different cluster ip address as a parameter.

    wlserver to start/stop servers.
For 6.1, it's probably not a huge win to use ant. It's up to you.
    If
you're more comfortable using shell scripts, that's certainly a

can i use ANT to do something like CONFIGURING my wls6.1 managed

managed servers/db connection pools ......and all the other configurationthat
    i do from wls console(or manually) ....????
and if yes, do you know of any examples, suggestions, ideas ?????

Rob, do you still consider or suggest using ANT for deploying say
    20

    on a 10 clustered environment.Yes
do you see any advantages using [ANT + weblogic.deploy]..... over
    simply
    using

  • What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.

What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.
I guess the iPhoto is only for people with 5,000 of personal photos.
Or even 200,000, but they can't use this app everyday.
I'm not talk about working as a photographer. They use Aperture.
They may use iPhoto like a family album that you take a look sometimes.
And don't care about putting photos from the camera or from internet everyday.
I have tons of music and I love iTunes 8, works great. So I tried but I can't stand iPhoto anymore.
I have over 173,000 photos. My goal is organize, have total control, crop in Preview and delete them fast as I can.
The iPhoto is too slow. And is not only about performance, more RAM... but the whole concept.
Finder is much better/richer/flexible to organize than iPhoto.
I'm not talking about the photographer workflow.
And I'm not talking about editing and all these great photo features, the search, and all the iLife environment. They are amazing.
When I'm iPhoto, I feel like a prisioner.
I can't open an album/folder/event alone just to take a look, without do lanch the iPhoto app with the all thousand photos together. And it's slow.
I can't use Quick Look there.
So, I'll use Finder for manage/crop/etc. But what's the best way to use iPhoto in my case? Put the best/key ones there to use in iLife/MobileMe? To do a more serious editing? I like the features: keywords/ratings/hidden photos/events... It would be cool this features in Finder.
    For example:
iMovie: Manage movies? NO. It's editng only.
iTunes: Manage music/small video/podcast...? OK. Editing the song? OK for tags/convert/artwork/equalizer... For music there's a GarageBand of course.
iPhoto: Manage photos? Yes and No.
I think Finder would kill iPhoto incoporating all the editing features in Preview and the rich manage in Finder.
Jobs said that no one care about iDVD anymore. They care about the web.
Using iMovie to export to MobileMe.
Maybe iPhoto become less important in a near future. With a better Finder+Preview Right?
Sorry for this long text with a short question.
    Thanks.

Your post demonstrates exactly why I keep saying that iPhoto is not the application for you.
It would be better an iPhoto organizing photos by words like when iTunes browse his music.
Why on earth would anyone want to organise photos by words? A list mode is entirely pointless in a Photo application. That's like having an old photo album organised with the photos facing inwards so you can read the back of the picture.
Again, this is a characteristic of a File browser. You don't want a Photo organiser, you want a file organiser.
And, in iPhoto, you can search by tags, effortlessly in either the search box or by using a Smart Album.
iPhoto always loads all that events and all the thumbs library to scroll, and I think it's overkill.
So, how is iPhoto to know which ones you want to work with today? Open a library, get the Library.
Would be better a Cover Flow option to browsing in Events.
You've obviously never tried scrubbing along the Event icon.
Imagine iTunes using Cover Flow mode all the time. It won't be too useful.
Many, many people do, including myself on a library of 20k tracks totalling more that 100 gigs, and find it very useful. Same with the Finder.
And if when iTunes Store starts to sell photos?
Why on earth would the iTunes store start to sell photos?
    My photos are not junk,
I didn't say there were. Read my post again.
When I said Finder to crop photos I mean Preview. But I feel in Finder. Because what's in Preview? A photo opened with a Preview's menubar and some cocoa APIs like adjustments. Not?
Oh, so you don't count Preview as an application. Fine. It is an application but you don't feel it. As you wish.
My point to you is very simple: Because of the way you want to organise your pics - using lists views and so on - iPhoto is not the application for you. Don't use it. But you keep writing things about the application that are untrue, and I'm aware that other folks search these forums and I don't want them to have inaccurate information about iPhoto.

  • What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
    The physical plan is this:
For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.
For my hard drives, I'm installing a 160GB Intel X25-M into the first drive bay
    http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/mainstream/index.htm
using one of MaxUpgrades' 'MaxConnects' kits. I will use this drive for the operating system software and my applications and their libraries.
Next, into the remaining three drive bays, I am installing three 300GB WD Velociraptors. Mine are the pre-'backplane ready' versions:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=459
so I have bought these sleds for them...
    http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_i d=180
I own one of Sonnet's Tempo SATA E4P cards
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4p.html
which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?
thanks for the help. I want to do this right.
    JQ

oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!
Thanks for the help. Like I say, I knew there was useful guidance hanging on some limb within your personal kit, (otherwise referred to as your mind)!
Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.
thanks Hatter. I'll let you know how things go, including what happens with the SSD. I don't have speed test software so I won't be able to track it's performance like that guy in the post you gave me did...

ps- Gotta love that ILLogic fellow eh? Talk about not getting the essence!

  • What's the best way to erase content but not the applications?

I'm giving away my iMac to my niece. I want to erase all my  content files, libraries ,etc., but not the applications. What's the best way to do this, and to do it securely?

If you have Downloaded and Upgraded to Lion See...
Here is an excerpt of the SLA; the Lion license (purchased from MAS) is NOT transferable. The SLA is quite clear:
    B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or on Apple-branded physical media, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to athird party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware beforedoing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating systemsoftware that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original Apple OS”) andpermanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware, provided that:(i) the transfer must include all of the Original Apple OS, including all its component parts, printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS, fullor partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the partyreceiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of theOriginal Apple OS license.
    Now Proceed...
Boot from the original OS installer disk and do an Erase & Install.
When the Mac reboots into Mac Setup Assistant Quit and shut it down.
When the New Owner Boots it up it's a brand new Mac... just like when you got it.
( The Original Install Disc(s) should also be included with the sale )

  • Best way to re-install OSX for resale after hard drive wipe

Just got a new MacPro and having transferred everything from my early 2008, I have a buyer for that machine. I want to only give him OSX Mavericks and some legally transferrable applications. What is the best way to do this?

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
Erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by booting into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer with the machine.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

  • What is the best way to keep a MacBook Pro backed up?

I'm about to buy a MacBook Pro for my daughter who is about to start University.  She will need to back up her work of course, so I'm wondering what is the best way to back up a MacBook?
At home I have my iMac which is backed up to a WD Studio II 2TB external HDD configured as a 1TB RAID 1 device.  Time Machine handles the backing up for me.  I don't backup the Applications folder.
The MacBook Pro will, most likely, be carted between University and DIGs most days.  I wonder what the best options are for backing up.  I think that, at the very least, she will be wanting to recharge each evening back at the Halls.  So I imagine it would be in order for her to have an HDD there to back up to. I wonder though if it would be possible to get hold of some sort of 'docking station' for her to use. This would act partly as a reminder for her to plug her back up device in the first place rather than relying on her remembering to plug in the Firewire each time.
I've not seen any docks for sale and I don't recall seeing any in my local Apple Store. Can anyone recommend a device or suggest a better option?

I agree with the previous poster.... a dock may sound like a good idea, but then if she wants to backup anything up it will have to be back in the rooom with the dock. If you just got an external HDD with firewire support, she would plug the thing in and Time machine can be set for automatic backup and she could always bring the backup drive with her if she wanted to backup anything say at home.... A dock is more expensive and I think it's a waste.... Get a nice portable external drive or if you want to set her up with a network in her dorm room you could get a time machine capsule or use the same setup that you have.
There is a "dock" well actually it's more of a stand that they sell in the apple store. It's called the arc or something....

  • Best way to share a brush/symbol library

I've created a brush and symbol library for a team of people to use.  I'm wondering what the best way to share this library is.
I'm not sure if the Document Profile is good, because then I would have to update the document profile and then copy it to each person's machine in order for them to always have the latest library, which doesn't seem like it will be easy to keep everyone updated with the latest file.
I was also thinking of using a template, but I think that will have the same problem.  Additionally, I prefer not to have all the brushes and symbols embedded in every file so performance isn't impacted.
Preferably I would like to store the file on a server, and have it open by default when Illustrator is opened, so everyone always gets the latest version when they open Illustrator.  Is there a way do this?
    Thanks!

    Hi Russ--
I'll have to read through Vimeo's terms of service, but I have to think they're asserting some right to the content like YouTube does.
Plus, these are commercial videos, and I don't think they allow that.  Of course, if they're private, I'm obviously not trying to sell anything.  But I have to think that it somehow is against their TOS since me posting a bunch of private videos that nobody can see really doesn't do them any good at all.

  • Best way to create Math-Book for several devices

    Hello,
I have written some Books about Mathematics and past months I rewrote the first one directly in iBooks Author - My original files have been written in WinWord 15 years ago, so there was only plain text, I could copy/paste into iBooks Author. The rest I had to edit completely new in LaTex in iBooks Author. Now I see it was the wrong way because it is pain in the *** to come back from ibook-Format to ePub and other formats to also sell them at Amazon for example.
So I hope to get some Pro-Tips for the best base format for easiest export to all possible formats. Of course ibook has more possibilities, but it would be a way to have a base version as epub, pdf, etc and then import into iBooks Author to make an extended version with videos, etc.
Would pages be the best way to make a base version (as far as I have seen there seems to bee a pay to export to ibooks Author and also to make ePub-version)? Or maybe making an HTML-Version with calibre (I think this is possible in calibre).
Problem is simply that I have so much Mathematic expressions in my books and so I need LaTex for best presentation and design.
Has anyone experience with creating Science Books?
But second problem of course is still to find a way to get an ePub version of my ibooks-file. So far I did not find a way to export the book including LaTex source.
I so much would appreciate some good advices on this...
Thank you so much in advance!
    Bye

    Hello RoberRM,
I am sorry that I can not give you a convenient solution for our problem. I finally went the same path like with my first book: I mainly target at students with iPads, so I decided to get the best out of iBooks Author to get the full palette of features. I simply did not want to stumble into experiments with uncertain results.
Maybe later on I will go the hard way to copy and paste text and latex part of the books into pages. I will see if it will be worth the efforts...
Besides this the workflow in iBA is simply more effective and time saving. So, at the moment for me everything points into the iBooks Author direction.
Maybe in later versions we will have ways to export into other formats.
Bye and good luck with your work!!

  • Best way to share a video with someone in another city...

What is the best way to share a video with someone in another city?
I know that FCPX contains all sorts of share options which create different resolutions and file sizes appropriate for different sites like YouTube, Facebook, and others.  But how to create the videos really isn't the problem.
I want to know how to share them.  I'm creating videos that are ultimately to be viewed on the internet.  When I have a completed video, I want to show it to the person who it is for before I finalize it.  I know that if it very small, I could email it.  And if it's larger, I could use something like Dropbox.  But I don't necessarily want them to have a copy of it (though I could do that and put a watermark on it).
I'd like to upload it to a site like YouTube or Vimeo, but those sites seem to be about sharing videos with a wide audience.  I know you can make a video private on YouTube, but, from what I've read, they permanently have the right to use the content, which I definitely don't want.
So what's the best way to do this?  I'm going to have to do it regularly, so I'm willing to pay for a service if it assures privacy and does not try to assert some right to my content.
I know there is an issue to be considered with people screen capturing content, but I'll use a watermark to lessen the chances of that.
