Best way to set up a private cloud for family

I wish to set up my private cloud. Is there any Apple device that will help me do so? If not, which are the devices that will be most compatible with Mac, iPhone and an iPad?
I don't have a server as yet. I am looking for an Apple device that can act as a storage for all kinds of files for every member in my family.
Will I be able to access my files from anywhere once secure my files in Mac server? If yes, can someone please explain the detailed procedure to do so?

In isolation, the term "Cloud" is effectively meaningless; it's largely become a marketing term designed to try to open up wallets in an effort toward the proper vacuuming of available funds.  It started out as what used to be timesharing or hosted services, or client server.  The "private" version is now typically used for devices or servers you own.  Better than these terms, you'll need to decide what services you want now, and what services you might grow into — and whether you want to provide gear for the immediate needs, or gear that's more capable and that you can grow into.  Storage is obvious.  Probably VPN services.  Web (and possibly WebDAV) with a Wiki or a content management system, and potentially your own mail server and calendar (CalDAV) server.  Once you have sorted out what you want to do and what you want to grow into (and implicitly also the budget involved here), then we'll have a better idea of what sort of "cloud" you need.
If you want to share storage via CIFS/SMB or AFP, then OS X (client) can do that now.  No need for OS X Server, or some other server.  For AFP, Time Capsule can provide local storage.  Further along, OS X Server, which can deal with sharing storage, as well as DNS and distributed authentication.  (Recent versions of OS X Server have had some issues with the VPN server, but Apple has released some patches that have supposedly addressed that.)
Or you can use Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices from various vendors.   This would be similar to the Time Capsule, though many of the available devices are more capable and more capacious.  Synology makes some of the higher-end gear in the home range, and there are many other vendors of NAS devices.
When working with multiple users where privacy is a concern, the necessity for authentication and access controls can arise with traditional file shares, though these simple shares will work for smaller configurations.  In a larger system, you'll want to have the access tied into the identity of the accessor, rather than having everybody configured with passwords all over the place — those passwords don't tend to get changed or require the user to log in and change it across multiple devices, and security tends to go downhill from there.  You might or might not be small enough here to not have these requirements; where you can either have passwords on multiple devices, or can share passwords — but that's something to ponder.
Remote access requires a network connection and probably involving a VPN security — an encrypted network connection — into a gateway firewall device with an embedded VPN server, or using NAT VPN passthrough into some other local VPN server you've installed and configured, and it requires an ISP connection that allows that remote access.  For simple access and where your ISP allows in-bound VPNs, dynamic DNS (to get from name to IP address) and a VPN server in your gateway device or in some other box inside your network — with NAT VPN passthrough enabled on your gateway device — will work.  For a bigger group or when more advanced features or typical use of a small business or such, you'd typically want static IP, as you'd typically be looking to add mail services and some other features.  (This also means you'll want a reasonably fast and reliable remote network link from your ISP, obviously.)
iOS doesn't particularly do file sharing (not without add-on tools, and many apps are not set up for accessing file shares in any case), so you'll have to look at what the particular apps you're using do support.  Once you know what those support, that'll help determine what can be shared there, and how.
If you wanted to go gonzo, there are commercial and open-source cloud implementations, but that's going to involve managing a server, and the cloud software.
Dropbox and Spideroak and other such are common choices for sharing files using hosted services, and Mac Mini Colo offers OS X-based cloud capabilities if you'd prefer to use a hosted OS X system.  This if you don't want to acquire and configure and manage and maintain the gear and the network access.

    For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
    If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
    Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
    Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
    If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
    (You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
    In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
    However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

    Check the formatting. It need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). This is also known as HFS+.
    FAT32 and NTFS formatting will not work with iMovie.
    If necessary, you can reformat using Disk Utility.
    Make one large partition. No need for multiple partitions.
    Do moves or copies to the external drive through iMovie as detailed in iMovie Help. If you move Events in the Finder, they may become unlinked from the projects that use them.

    I have the same dliemma. Daughter 8, son 6 - 2 new itouches for xmas - one library , my iPad, wife's iPhone ??
    I was intending on just keeping one library (this does contain music with explicit lyric content etc) and manage their music via separate playlists.
    As far as accounts and restrictions go, I was going to set them up with their own itunes account (using mail addresses only I can use). Load the account up with a voucher each.
    The restrictions I was going to apply at the iPod (rather than the account) using a PIN I know - this way you can limit Safarii browsing (i.e. turn it off), youtube, and the age limit to the apps they can install and run - and the movie ratings allowed etc.
    Happy to hear other ideas though - I'm intending on setting this up BEFORE they get them.

    I am setting up a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 that will be used as a "loaner" notebook for meetings, etc. The computer will be used internally at our company, so users will be logged into our network. Active Directory is set up on this computer to allow all domain users to log in using their own user name and password; this approach helps meet our company's security standards (we want to avoid using one common login or account for all users).
    While this approach seems to fit our needs, it causes problems when it comes to running applications. For instance, each new user is prompted to enter first-time usage information when launching an application (forcing them to contemplate registration information, various settings, etc.). I've given "everyone" read-write privileges to the HD > Library and the Applications folder, but this does not solve anything and may not be a good approach anyway.
    I would welcome any advice on the best way to set up this computer for multiple users logging in via Active Directory. Thanks!

    Where are you installing the third party applications? It sounds like they are being installed in the 'User 1' account, rather than the /Applications folder (admin or not, one user normally can not see into another user's folders). Repairing permissions only works for applications that have a file in /Library/Receipts, not on folders in general, so you would need to check the permissions for the folders in question.

    Leopard wont be out befor the second half of this year, sofar i cannot tell you what options you are going to have with the new system. Seems like with time machine is going to be a perfect backup for your whole system.
    10.4.x:
    Software RAID you can do 0 -1:
    To setup a RAID of your system you have to format the drive and setup the RAID type you want from the disk utility.
    To have some security i suggest the "mirror" options but you are going to lose some perfomance, depending you want is your main job it mighn't be noticed.
    RAID 5:
    This would be the nicest option but you need to buy an additional RAID controller. This is mostly used on servers and not on client computers.

    If people wish to share songs, they can make copies.

    I am going to be traveling in the on a boat in Europe. Access to wifi could be limited and slow. I want to back up my photos and catalog to the cloud as there is potental to lose laptop and external drive. Since I have a 25 mp camera and will be shooting in Raw allot, there will be some big files as each photo could be around 27 gb.
    All of my files will be in the My pictures folder LR set up when I set up my new catalog. I planned to back up these folders to the cloud, then send just the new folders each time I add them to LR during import. Then I was going to have the catalog BK that is created each time you close LR  (just the data only is in this file) sent to the cloud as well.
    Then if my laptop is lost I can copy the back up catalog (just the data file) and the My Pictures file that has all my photos in folders to a new laptop and restore my catalog. I'm told by Adobe help that this won't work as the connection between the photos and the catalog back up will be lost.
    Is this correct? And if so, what's a better method.

    Thanks Jim, and yes I meant 27 mb.  Will be living on a sail boat so there is potential to lose both the laptop and external drive. The cloud was to be my 3rd copy

    You really have images that are 27 GB each? I suspect you meant 27 MB. But, even then, I think cloud backup might be cumbersome. I would suggest carrying a small external hard drive. I have a 1 TB USB 3 drive that is really fast and very small. No external power supply. Plug it in, and copy the files. That's what I would do.

    What is the best way to set up there account, should it be a unique account for each of them or should I put them under my account?
    They will be using my same iMac when they sync or update there iTouch, so will they need to log in under their name every time?

    Better just your account for multiple devices. The only drawback is that the music will have to managed manually.
    Connect one of the iPods to your computer then launch iTunes. You should see the iPod under Devices on the left side of the iTunes window. Double click then you can name each iPod to keep them separate but only syncs to your iTunes account.
    Without knowing your Apple ID user name and password they would not be able to make purchases ergo no downloads you aren't aware of.

    The kids are minors.. if they are under 13 years of age, according to Apple, they can't have their own accounts regardless.

    I just bought my son an iPad Mini and I am trying to decide on what is the best way of setting it up for him. The one thing I do know is that I do NOT want all the content that is my iPhone 6 to pop up on his iPad Mini. I want his iPad to be used for his games and educational stuff and his own music.     You can set them up as a software RAID using Disk Utility.
    It'll simply be one large disk for all intents and purposes.
