Best way to set up wireless for both pc and Mac printer sharing

I have multiple Mac's and PC's that access my network
with an Epson printer connected to the Airport
Extreme base station...all works well but I cannot
print from any PC or from my Windows XP on my Macpro
via PARRALLELS or Bootcamp.
any ideas as to the best setup here??

Best way to set up sync for iPhone, iCloud and iTunes

Though have used iPhone for a number of years and a big fan, am only now jumping into Apple-land - just bought a mac mini.
Currently, my iPhone and iPad sync with iCloud - all my contacts and mail are available.
I set up my Mac mini with the iClound userid/password - so I get my mail and contacts there too.
All nice and good.
Now I have this additional option - if I connect my iPhone to the mac mini, I can sync with iTunes. I can sync contacts, photos, etc. etc. What will this do that my iCloud sync already doesn't do? I am worried about turning any of these options on and trying because I might end up with duplicate contacts. [For example, I copied all my photos to the macmini using iPhoto. Now when I check the box for synching photos in iTunes, the required space on my iPhone doubles - suggesting that I might end up with duplicates....]
As you maybe can tell from above - I don't currently sync music, videos, podcasts, etc. I want to start doing that. Question again - what is the difference between syncing with iTunes on this mac mini vs. iCloud syncing?

That was a loong and perhaps too generic a question. Let me ask something very specific.
My iPhone, iPad, and Mac Mini all sync with iCloud and I have my contacts accessible on all three.
Now when I connect my iPhone/iPad to my Mac Mini, iTunes sync becomes another option.
If I now check the box that says "sync contacts", will I end up with duplicate contacts all over the place? I don't want to try it to see if I will or not because it can be a huge pain to get rid of the duplicates.

Best way to set up wireless for roaming RDP user to prevent disconnects

I am trying to resolve a wireless issue for a busy medical office I work at; it is an 11,000 sf building with many exam rooms and offices, and 20-30 wireless users. We tried placing three WAP4410N devices around the building on different channels with a shared SSID, so that users would have connectivity anywhere in the building. The medical assistants and doctors connect to their EMR software using laptops connected via RDP and we seem to have an issue with connections dropping briefly when they move throughout the building. The disruption is enough that their RDP connections often become unresponsive and they have to take time to disconnect and reconnect again. The other issue is that the laptops would jump to a stronger signal when, for instance, a nurse walked to the front of the building to get a patient and came close to a different WAP, but then when they came back to the exam area, the device would hang onto that signal as it grew very weak instead of jumping back to the closer WAP.
We've also had issues with the a couple of the devices becoming completely unresponsive but I am hoping the firmware update will fix that. Is there a way to make this work properly with this model of router? How many devices should we need for full coverage? If they just aren't up to this task, what should we be looking at to replace them? From what I have been able to research, what we are looking for is 'seamless roaming' and these devices don't support that. But I was told by a support tech that even the Aironet WAPs will have a few dropped packets going between APs so I would hate to upgrade yet again and still have the problem remain.

The issue your describing is normal for WAP4410N's.
Since there is not a wireless controller used with those WAPs, there is no way to control the roaming so that it is seamless. Without the controller, wireless signals actually have to drop before they can move from one signal to another.
The only solution to get seamless roaming is to include a wireless controller into your network. The small business APs in our current inventory do not support.
Aironets with a wireless controller is your best solution. Would just need to see what Cisco has that works within your budget.

However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Elements, I keep getting the message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8. The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma. In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6. (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13. Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter. Download and install it from here for FREE: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890 Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use. That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom. DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless. There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.

I just purchase my ipad2 2 days ago. yesterday, there was a sound. today there is no sound. there is a sound only in movies and you tube and music. but no sound on all apps and keyboards. I look it up and seems like ther are few that have this problem. I called walmart coz I bought it there and they told me that they have not heard that before but if I can't fix it, just return it and exchange it with anew one since I have 14 days to do that. I tried rebooting it and still won't work. Should I just restore it?

Best way to set-up U Verse, Time Capsule and Express to Extend Network

I'm trying to extend my WIFI signal with AP Express and TC using an AT&T U Verse router. Neither the Express nor the TC are directly connected to the U Verse router. Both the Express and the TC show they are connected to the network but when I try and edit the settings to extend the network rather than join the network they both show as not connected any longer. Before on DSL the Express and TC were connected as extending the network (slow but connected). The house is 3 levels U Verse in in the basement. Trying to get a connection on the 3rd floor. We have multiple iPads, iPhones, Mac Book Pro's, an i Mac and Direct TV receivers.
What's the best way to set this up to extend the range of what we have?

You cannot extend range from non-apple routers.
So both the TC and express will join the wireless of the uverse and then become dumb clients..
You need at least one of the two units plugged into the uverse by ethernet.. then the other device can extend that network.
Consider using EOP adapters if your distance is such that even with the correct setup you don't get the range you need. Or better still do it properly and wire it with ethernet.
It is possible to use the Express as a bridge..
So say setup on the first floor.. a wireless bridge from the express to the uverse.. then plug the ethernet into the TC.. and use the TC in bridge mode.. it will not be fast but it can work.
Reset everything to factory and start over.. as you will not be able to get this working without a full reset of the apple routers.
Note still not ideal but it might give you more range than extend wireless with say express plugged into the uverse.

Best way to set up or migrate to a new Mac?

Briefly, the best way to set up my new iMac (which arrives shortly) and transfer my accounts, files, etc. from my older iMac (intel OS X, 10.6.7).
I have a time machine back up external hard drive connected via fire wire.
I don't have a second firewire cable but would buy one if it helps.
I have an extra ethernet cable.
I use an ATT Uverse router as my network hub.
Ideally. I want to transfer all settings EXCEPT for a dozen downloaded applications that I no longer want. If I can't pick and choose applications to transfer, then I will re-download them onto the new machine.
What would you recommend?
1. Using Set-up assistant on the new machine? If so, do I physically connect the two machines before powering on the new one?
2. Using Migration assistant after getting the new machine powered up? If so, does it matter if I use mig/asst on the new machine and choose transfer files 'from another Mac' or use mig/asst on the old machine and choose transfer files 'to another Mac'?
In short, given these facts about my situation, what might be the better way to proceed?

Best way to set up homesharing via airport express and NAS

Hi,
I've just bought an Airport express and was wondering what the best way to set it up would be so that I can play music stored on my NAS, controlled by my iphone / ipad. I have itunes match as well, and don't want my phone to be streaming the music from wherever. The airport express will be wired via ethernet to the same router as the NAS on which everything is stored. I don't want the problem with network dropouts and hammering the bandwidth and battery on my iphone to deal with.
How can I set it up to be taking the music straight from the NAS rather than streaming it. I'd also rather not have to turn off itunes match everytime, because it takes an age to repopulate the library when I turn it back on.

You cannot use homesharing to play content from anywhere but iTunes on a computer. The content doesn't have to be on that computer but it has to be part of the iTunes library on your computer. In addition the computer has to be on with iTunes running.
It doesn't matter what sonos can do, sonos is a lame duck in comparison to iTunes because iTunes gives you many features sonos can't, all because it doesn't use iTunes and homesharing.

External hard drive for both windows and mac

hello, all - just bought a western digital 500gb my book premium edition external hard drive. will be using for both pc and macbook, not necessarily to share files (though i may on occasion), but rather as a backup. been researching the discussion boards and concluded that i should use it as pre-formatted fat32. few questions...
1) if i do use to share files, from what i understand i will be able to read windows files with my mac but i can't read mac files with windows (unless i have macdrive installed). is this correct?
2) since mac can read/write to fat 32, is it necessary to partition the drives and keep the files separated? i talked to a "computer guy" earlier today and he said i should consider having two completely separate external hard drives as having files from two different operating systems on the same drive could cause major problems for both... i didn't really believe him.
3) i have seen different posts stating using fat32 format for mac limits file size to 4gb. another post said 32gb. which is right? i have os is 10.4.7 if that makes a difference.

2 - i don't mind partitioning at all. but he strongly suggested not even partitioning but using two completely separate hard drives. yeah, the 500gb was a bit overkill, so if i can use it for both as opposed to one and buying an additional, i'd rather.
2/3 - if i partition, is it best to divide it into ntfs and hfs+? or should i keep the pc portion fat32? if the mac portion is hfs+, can i store any size file? i have videos that are anywhere from 10-20gb, and i'd like to get them off my computer and into the external drive.

I'm new to the video stuff, so i have a few questions. i am planning to post videos on my blog. I want to have them in a format that both windows and mac users can play. is this a possibility or will i have to export .wmv for windows and quicktime for mac? i realize that windows users can download quicktime, but i either want the video to be viewable in a format that can be read by all without having to download anything (might be too big a wish :o) ). if i can't do that, then i'd like to have 2 links - one for quicktime and one to the .wmv. in this case, how to i export a .wmv file? i don't see that option anywhere on the share menu? do i need to buy quicktime pro? that leads me to another questions - if i have imovie, do i need quicktime pro? so far i'm having a hard time figuring out what quicktime pro has that imovie doesn't....thanks in advance!

Posting to YouTube and providing a URL link might be the most universal method of playback although quality may be on the weak side.

WMV is a proprietary compression format. You will either have to purchase the authorized QT components from Flip4Mac or purchase a separate open source converter application like Visual Hub.

Any you won't even if you purchase and install the QT component -- iMovie '08 only exports to QT compression formats.
do i need to buy quicktime pro?
It wouldn't help. Getting QT Pro only unlocks editing and conversion features. It does not add any additional codecs which don't already have installed.

As indicated above, QT Pro allows you to convert to/from any compression formats for which you have working import/export QT components. This can already be be done using GarageBand and iMovie. GarageBand allows you to access any installed QT import/export component while iMovie '08 restricts you to Apple QT components. In addition, QT Pro allows you to create player displays with multiple audio/video tracks, gives you ability to layer graphic elements (e.g, create watermarks, create pictures-within-pictures, etc,), allow the viewer to switch between alternate audio and/or video tracks, and may other things.
ADDED: If you really want to see what QT Pro can do, check out QTKirk's examples on his DotMac account.

Best way to set up wireless Internet with my situation?

I am looking for a little help. I have a PBG4 and a new imac. I would like them both to have a wireless internet connection. Reason being is that there is no phone line/cable Internet connection in the room the imac is in. The cable internet comes into the living room where i often use my PBG4.
Is there a way to set up my internet connection, so that the internet cable enters a router and both computers can access the wireless connection with no cabled attached. A USB printer port would be nice also. On paper it looks like the Airport Express can do this. Is this correct? Or am I missing something. I like the fact that is has the music/audio jack is well. While shopping for routers it looks like a lot of them need a home computer to be hard wired into them.
What would my best option be?

Yes, an Airport Express would meet your needs.
Or am I missing something.
No you're not.
While shopping for routers it looks like a lot of them need a home computer to be hard wired into them.
They can have a computer hard wired in, but for all routers it is not essential.

Organising Mail - What's the best way of setting up rules for aliases?

Hello friendly helpful people.
I'm a recent switcher, and am enjoying all the new things to learn about the mac and OSX (Tiger 10.4.5), so please forgive any basic questions I may ask. I have searched the forums and not found the answers to my particular situation.
I have a mac account (shared with my wife) and its all setup in Mail fine and dandy. Lets call this email [email protected] I have then created two aliases for us to use, lets call these [email protected] and [email protected]
My wife has an iBook and I have a PowerMac G5 - both running Mail.
My goal is to get to a situation where we can both see emails sent to [email protected] - but we have individual rules to move out our respective aliases.
e.g. I would like to see emails addressed to [email protected], but not necessarily to [email protected] My wife would like to see the converse of [email protected], but not [email protected]
Q1) If an email is sent to both [email protected] and [email protected] - do I get two copies? If so, how do I setup a rule to move only one?
Q2) If I have read the other postings elsewhere, am I right to believe that moving an email to a folder "On My Mac" it will delete it from the server? So when my wife checks email on her iBook, it won't be there?
Currently, I have attempted to set up a folder in .mac mail called "Wife's email" and "Hubby's email" - which means at least it doesn't get removed from the server.
Is there a better way of organising your incoming email? How has other people organised their mac aliases?

There are several different ways to aid in what you ask. If you are not wanting to move emails, a simple approach would be to create Smart Mailboxes, which are not really mailboxes, but only lists created by some search rules, and the messages remain in the original Inbox, until actually moved.
Set up one to list those addressed to Shared and Hubby, and another to list those addressed to Shared and Wife. See:

Each of you would mostly ignore the Inbox, until taking some action, such as deleting or moving to On My Mac mailboxes (which are New Mailboxes, as opposed to New Smart Mailboxes).
This seems to suit what you desire, but if not, post further details.

What is best way to set up Ipods for my children? One lives with ex and I plan to use facetime and texting to communicate. Should he have his own itunes account?

I started out by setting up under my itunes account. When I tried the facetiming my iphone with my sons new ipod it said that I was calling even though I set it up in his name. Also, I don't know how to try to face time him. How do I add him as a contact to facetime him. Also, his step sister will be setting hers up also and she will want to be able to text and face time him. How should we go about setting all this up? First, you should have to Apple IDs
Second, you must have a Wi-Fi connection.
Facetime Calls
To add them go to address book and put in the Apple ID username under email.
Go to facetime, click the contacts button on the bottom. Click the name they gave them. Click the email you used for their Apple ID. It should start a call with the device hooked up with that Apple ID.
Set-Up Facetime
Go to settings. Click facetime. Sign-in with the Apple ID you are using. When someone calls that address it should give you a notification.
Texting
If you are getting a new iPod you will be getting with iOS 5 wich includes iMessage to other iOS 5 devices. Just click iMessage at the home screen and type in the name of the person with the Apple ID you want to text OR type in the Apple ID you want to text. You should start a convorsation with the iDevice hooked up to that Apple ID.
Set-Up iMessage (a.k.a. Texting)
Go to settings. Click iMessage. Sign-in with the Apple ID you are using. When someone texts that address it will notify you.

Good Wireless Router for Both Windows and Mac

Anyone know of an outstanding wireless router that's compatible with both Operating Systems (Windows/Mac)? Should I get an "n"? Will that work for both? Does the new Airport Extreme router fit that bill?

If you can still find one, I'd get the old Airport Extreme (round snow). Right now, the new 802.11n is in the process of suffering growing pains with third party equipment.
This is only my opinion. If you review this discussion topic area and read the posts you can make a decision.

I am going to partition a new Seagate external hard drive for both my pc and mac. What format do I choose for the PC partition? MS-DOS (FAT), ExFAT, or Free Space.

If I may suggest:
Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting has completed select the main entry for the new drive (mfgr.'s ID) then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Click on the large partition rectangle then click on the Add [+] button. The partition should divide into two equal volumes. Resize as you prefer. Select the second or bottom volume to use on the PC. Set the format type to ExFat, then click on the Apply button. Wait for the two volumes to finish mounting on the Desktop.
