Best Way to Setup Document for Colored Paper Job

Hi, we're running a business card job that will print on a red-colored paper (well, white & red duplexed for a white front & red back).
Curious to know the best way to set this up for both soft-proofing here, and to send the most appropriate files to the printer. We'll separate out the backs of the cards that print on red into their own document (since the fronts will run on white).
On these backs, there will be a background image that is a colored grayscale image with the foreground being a darker PMS red than the paper color (for a bit of a tone-on-tone effect). And the type will be engraved with opaque white.
- Should I change the 'Paper' color to a CMYK simulation of the paper color?
- Or is it better to setup a 'background layer' set to not print and filled with the red paper color?
- How exactly should I setup the opaque white for the type? I think if I left Paper as white, applying the Paper or default white swatch would not set the type to print using a spot color, it would just knock it out, correct?
THANKS! Don't do this too often.

Ultimately for print production you will need the opaque white as a spot color, so create a spot swatch 0C, 0M, 0Y, 0K. As for the background image that you are printing on red stock, I would create a layer for the red stock, set the image on another layer that has a multiply effect, and this could be used for the proof. The print file, you would not need the layer for the red stock, and you wouldn't need the image to multiply either.
Why not just print a solid red with reverse type, instead of an opaque white on colored stock?

  • Advice on best way to setup Disaster Recovery for SOA Suite 10.1.3.4

    Hi Everyone,
I need some advice on the best way to setup Disaster Recovery for a SOA Suite 10.1.3.4 install deploying JSF/ADF OC4J applications.
The way we are trying to do it at the moment is manually copy the "applications" and "applications-deployments" folders for the OC4J application on the production server, then compress and ship the files across to the DR application server nightly. (We don't require high availability).
In the event of a disaster we then extract the files and copy to the OC4J instance (pre-created and configured) on the DR server. Unfortunately to date we haven't been able to reliably setup a DR application (seem to mostly get 404 errors etc), even though the OC4J application has its connection pool resolved to the DR database and is showing as "up" in the ASConsole.
My question is, is there a more "native" way to do what we are trying to do. We do not have Enterprise version of SOA Suite or 11g database so any advanced recovery features are not an option. The setup is also stand alone, i.e. we are not using clustering or RAC etc.
Any ideas would be really helpful.
    Thanks,
    Leigh.
PS we are also running the production apps server with Oracle Application server 10g 10.1.2.3.0 as the HTTP apache server (with Forms, Reports and Discoverer deployed) and the SOA Suite 10.1.3 applications use the 10.1.2 HTTP server via the HTTP to AJP bridge. So the 10.1.3 OC4J instance is configured to use AJP on port range 12501 - 12600.

For enterprise solutions, AS Guard would work.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25221_04/core.1013/b15977/disasrecov.htm#sthref303
However, since advanced recovery options are not available (as you said), then what you are doing should not be too bad.

  • Best Way to setup a disaster Recovery site for a logical standby database

I have a logical standby DB (L1DB) as a reporting db on the same machine as the primary (P1DB). We are planning on building a disaster recovery site with similar hardware and potentially have disk mirroring of atleast the redo log files.
The DR site can hold an additional physical standby (S1DB) for the primary (P1DB). I am trying to understand what would be the best way to setup the Disaster Recovery site for the L1DB logical stdby. Ideally, when the disaster happens, and I no longer have P1DB and L1DB, I should be able to switch to S1DB as the new primary. But how do I setup to have a L2DB that takes the place of L1DB and has its contents and can be setup as a logical standby of S1DB?

If you already setup one logical standby, then you know how it works, so not sure what question you are asking ?
Personally I would setup L2DB as a standby of the original primary P1DB. Having downstream standby databases complicates things, and adds additional lag between primary transaction time and L2DB apply.

What is the best way to setup a premiere sequence for export when mixing 24fps (CG) and 23.976fps (live action) for final output at 23.976 (vimeo and such).
Right now my sequence is at 24fps, and when I export to 23.976, my dialogues seem to shift.
Should I set my sequence at 23.976fps instead of 24fps?
Thanks in advance for the help, and sincere apologies if this is a noob question.
    David

That makes it easy.  Remove the CGs from the project.  Go to Edit>Preferences>Media... and set the Indeterminate Media Timebase to 23.976.  Then when you import the image sequence, PP will assign it the correct frame rate.
    Edit in a 23.976 sequence.

  • Best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book

    Hello,
I was wondering what would be the best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book on a Macbook Pro so to achieve the most realistic results to what's on the screen
ie. which software should I use to change photos from RGB to CMYK, photoshop or iPhoto itself. I'm guessing maybe the autofix feature in iPhoto? (I don't have Aperture)
Secondly, which monitor color setting should I set the screen at? I'm guessing it's either Apple RGB or Colour LCD, maybe even ColorMatch RGB?
Any any other tips that people can give in achieving the most realistic results to what you have on the screen when your printed iPhoto book gets sent back. I don't want the mid tones to disappear or become too bright because the gamma and color settings were different to what they use at the other end.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?
    Many thanks

  • What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch?

What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch? Used Quicktime Pro/ Export (iPhone setting). Videos aren't as crisp as downloaded Videos. Compressors /ipod video Setting also looks crapy (with bitrate med & High). What should I use?

Visualhub is a transcoder with multiple input and output formats with specific setting for iPod,iPod touch. Costs around $19-used to work great but recently everything I convert suffers audio crash than closes out the player. Hopefully they will fix it.
Elgato H.264 hardware transcoder is $99 dollars(USB stick that plugs in to Mac)-speeds up encoding of any file quicktime can handle, settings for apple tv, iphone/touch, ipod,Sony PSP. Worth the cost if you transcode a lot of video for the Touch or own an elgato HD tuner. Files work flawlessly and look great.
Mpeg streamclip-free. Works great, has presets or can customize the output.

  • What's the best way to setup a media server/central storage for all of my?

I was wondering what the best way to achieve a central media server for all my iTunes content + iPhoto's, calendar syncing and contact sharing is? This is what I currently have:
iMac 20" Aluminum + External HD Backup (kids)
    Macbook Black (wife)
    Macbook Pro 15" (me)
    Airport Extreme 802.11n (obvious)
TimeCapsule 1TB (wifi backup for wife/me)
I would like to replace my PC in my office with a brand new Mac Pro Nehalem 8-Core, 8GB Ram, and 4TB, and replace my PC laptop in my living room attached to my tv, with an Apple TV.
I want to centralize all our Photos from vacations, etc. Music, videos, movies, that are currently split up over wife's macbook, kids imac and my macbook pro onto my soon to be purchased Mac Pro.
I want to be able to stream everything from my living room via Apple TV for when guests come over, dinner parties, etc. (plus I love apple and it keeps things clean)
I'm currently using MobileMe to sync all of our Calendars and Contacts with my main account, which is great, but MobileMe doesn't sync to family members accounts =
What would I need to do to centralize all this onto my future Mac Pro so that everyone has access all the time when they are home and the key here is, modify/update/change from their machines and sync it back/update it on the Mac Pro.
Also, I'm hoping Snow Leopard has some changes to iTunes to make this a little more possible, since we're right around the corner from this release. I don't really want to spend an additional $900+ on Snow Leopard Server to have to achieve these results, but if it makes it easier, and does the job, then I guess I might. This is all speculation though, since it's not out yet. I'd like to get this all sorted and setup within the next month.
I was considering a Drobo, they say they can throw up iTunes Server but, I appreciate everyone for reading this, and taking the time to respond!
    Thanks!

I'm in the process of setting up a smaller (and cheaper) but somewhat similar setup to what you want to do, so maybe one example might help point you in the right direction. My needs consist of a centralized location for data storage, which will include iPhoto libraries (I keep two separate ones), iTunes (which I also want served to the home theater system), something other than my laptop to play internet videos and downloaded content on my TV, all with ideally the lowest cost and energy use possible.
My solution was the new Mini with a FW800 external drive as the server/media hub and Airport gigabit as the network hub (it also handles the backup drive).
FW800 is fast enough to saturate a gigabit ethernet link, so I don't consider that much of a bottleneck. The Mini then has iTunes running at all times with its centralized library on it; it is hooked to the home theater via HDMI-DVI video and optical audio, so it can play music and also handle videos when desired; Front Row with the Apple remote is close enough to an AppleTV that I think it handles that well, and it's more full-featured than an AppleTV. It can further be used to display photos/slideshows/whatever on the TV for guests or such, or to surf from the couch with a wireless mouse/keyboard. You can also toss in an EyeTV for $150 and use that as a DVR if you feel like it.
When I want to edit photos or such on my desktop, the gigabit link is fast enough that I can run iPhoto without noticing any significant slowdown. Its also usable over wireless, though I have a dangling extra network cable to plug into a laptop for full gigabit speed if need be. iTunes, of course, shares its library, which can be played from any of the computers in the house if so desired (iPhoto can do that too if you just want to display).
If I REALLY wanted top speed (though I've even done video editing in iMovie via ethernet without issue), I could use a third party synch app (I like Sync) to mirror any of the content from the mini server to a local drive; this works fine with anything but multi-way synching, such as address books being modified in different locations. I'd probably try to set up one of those Mobile Me clone systems or use a 3rd party app if I needed to do that.
Again, maybe this isn't powerful enough or "synched" enough in terms of local storage for your taste, but the advantage is that a Mini uses a minute fraction of the power of a Mac Pro, so you're saving a lot on electricity if the computer will be powered up at all times as a server, and it's also a lot more full-featured as a home theater media hub than an AppleTV. And, heck, the thing is about as well equipped as my old top-of-the-line G5 tower for a 5th the cost and 1/15th the power and noise.

  • Is there a way to check inDesign documents for color?

I need to send a file to print and I want to make sure all of the line art is the same color swatch. The printer will charge me if they have to convert a line. The color is dark blue so I can't visually differentiate it from black in some cases. Is there a script to check the document for me or a feature in inDesign to check?

You can do it in InDesign and in Acrobat Pro, you should check it in both programs.
InDesign: Window > Output > Separations Preview (Panel)
Acrobat Pro > Tools > Print Production > Output Preview, select separations
There you can turn off any ink plate.

  • Best way to do document covers -- Illustrator or Indesign?

I work on an academic journal that's relatively simple -- no bleeds on the inside, mostly black and white text and illustrations, with a perfect-binding (paper-back-book style spine). I also now design the covers, which are identical for each issue except for the issue number and date on the front and the spine, and a picture in a box on the front cover. There's a background color over the entire cover that bleeds off all edges. I've been doing the cover layout in Illustrator, since I need to do the front, back, and spine in one piece, and since the width of the spine changes based on the page count, and I wouldn't know how to do this easily in Indesign. But I also need to produce single-page PDFs of the front and back covers without the spine, and making these in Illustrator is awkward -- I can do it using the Print Tiling Tool and printing PDFs, but the Print Tiling tool doesn't snap to the page borders, so it's not as accurate as I'd like. I'd also like to see if I can set up the issue number and date as cross references so they'll automatically update each month, which is something I'd have to do in Indesign.
What's the best way to design the front and back cover in Indesign and import to Illustrator to unite them and add the spine? I'm a little worried about seeing borders between the background color of the covers (made in Indesign) and the spine (made in Illustrator). Any advice appreciated...
    Rodney

I do the reverse: front and back covers + spine (with bleed) in 1 spread, and then place that document (cropped to trim) into my single-page layout when generating a low-res PDF of whole book: placed once on front cover, and once on back.

  • Best way to light photos for printing

    Hi All,
I previously posted on the forum on what to do if my prints are too dark. After getting helpful feedback from other forum users and confirming with the pringint company, I made sure that my monitor is calibrated to 90 lumens. Now am wondering the best way to lighten the photos for export (as I can't see the impact of gamma like in the print dialog.)
    Backgound:
I setup my macbook pro to get the correct color calibration to print correctly. (I am exporting to sRGB colorspace to send to the online printing company). After calibrating my laptop lcd, it is apparent (by sending a few test photos) that the prints still come out a little too dark. As I am working on a laptop, I am limited to how much the screen vs exported photos can be adjusted. Therefore, I am looking on the best way to retouch the photos for exporting. Also note that I am using apple aperture.
Which is the best way to lighten up the photos (or a group of images that are taken under different lighting situations exposures, that would also keep my workflow streamlined?
    1. Adjust the images on export using a gamma adjustment. (easiest to implement but since aperture only shows gamma adjustments on printing and not exporting, setting this correctly will be a guess.)
    2. Use a curves adjustment to lighten the photo. (Might be the easiest to implement and see the results but need to create separate version for viewing on screen vs printing which isn't hard but adds a layer complexity).
    3. Use some of the exposure/brightness/showdow recovery sliders. (Unsure of the best sliders to use and each photo needs separate adjustments. In addition, like 2 above, separate versions would be need to display on screen vs printing).
    4. (Other ideas?).
    I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • Best way to  setup 2 iPods, 1 MacBook, 1 iTunes store account?

I just got a iPod Nano (2nd Gen) for Christmas. My wife has a MacBook and a 30GB iPod Video as well as the iTunes account. We've been sharing her iPod but now she says I've got to get my stuff off since I've got my own. We have alot of CDs loaded into iTunes that we both like and also some stuff that only one of us likes (CDs, podcast, etc.). I want to just use her MacBook and iTunes Store account to manage my iPod (until we can afford to me a mac) but I'm not sure how's the best way to do that. I have my own user setup on the Macbook but don't have any access to the music at this time.
    Suggestions?

There are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above which is a little out of date:
Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Mac
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Another option when using a single library is to set any or all of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. You can read more about playlists at these links:

  • Best way to store documents and images in a web application

    All,
Which is the best way to store the documents, is it Oracle DB or file system or Virtual Directory Mapping in weblogic.
We are working on a Internet based application into CRM domain, there is a requirement where user can upload and download the documents (.pdf, .xls, .doc etc). Right now we are storing images in the DB. Is it advisable to store all the docs in database and will it scale up in future.
PS: There is no scope for using content server because of business constraints.
Please let me know, thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Girish

Best way to store depends entirely on requirements.
Why store it in the database when it for example is purely static images (e.g. used as part of the web GUI)? Instead that can be served up directly by a web server - which is specifically designed for this.
If it is more than just an image, but include tags (non spatial data attributes), requires transaction control (e.g. updating an old passport/id photo with a newer one), auditing, filtering/searching and ordering, requires backup, needs security and access controls, and so on - than that is most definitely a database function.
So the issue is not what the binary file is or contains - an image or pdf or something else. It depends entirely on how it is to be used and what the business requirements are in this respect.

  • Best way to handle cover for saddle-stitched book

I have a small book (80 pages, including covers, 5.5 x 8.5 finished size) that will be saddle-stitched. I need to make a front and back cover that bleed together, so I figure the best way to do this is simply to create a new document with a single page for both back and front covers -- right?
If so, do I make the width of this single page 11 x 8.5 (twice the width of the finished pages) or do I need to add a tiny bit of width since its the cover and needs to wrap around all the pages inside?
Any advice on efficient ways to create covers like this is appreciated. I don't do a lot of print design.
    Thanks,
    Zoe

    Ken and Bob,
The issue is that I am not using an image that bleeds across the covers. I want to have text boxes in ID that bleed across the cover fold. So, it will not work to have the front cover and the back cover be in separate spreads. And since I don't think there's any way to start a document with a left page (ie, a full spread), I figured I would need to use an entirely different page size -- the width of the entire spread instead of half -- and just use a single page doc.
Please let me know if this is not a good idea.
